GENERAL OPERATmON

Readthis operator'smanualcarefullyinits entiretybeforeattempting
toassemblethismachine.Read,understand,and followall instructions

onthe machineand inthe manual(s)beforeoperation.Becompletely
familiarwiththe controlsandthe properuseofthis machinebefore
operatingit. Keepthismanualin a safeplaceforfutureand regular
referenceandfororderingreplacementparts.

o Thismachineisaprecisionpieceof powerequipment,not aplaything.

Therefore,exerciseextremecautionatalltimes.Yourunithasbeen
designedto performonejob:to mowgrass.Do notuseit for anyother
purpose.

causecancerandbirthdefectsorotherreproductiveharm,

Tohelpavoidbladecontactor athrownobjectinjury,stayinoperator
zonebehindhandlesandkeepchildren,bystanders,helpers,and petsat
least75feetfrom mowerwhile itis in operation.Stopmachineif anyone

entersarea.

o Alwayswearsafetyglassesor safetygogglesduringoperationandwhile

performingan adjustmentor repairto protectyoureyes.Thrown objects
whichricochetcancauseserious injurytothe eyes.

o Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesandclose-fittingslacksandshirts.

Shirtsandpantsthatcoverthe armsand legs andsteel-toedshoes
arerecommended.Neveroperatethismachinein barefeet,sandals,

slipperyorlightweight(e.g.canvas)shoes.

Contactwith bladecanamputatehandsandfeet.

o Amissingor damageddischargecovercan causebladecontact or

thrownobjectinjuries.

o Manyinjuriesoccurasa result ofthe mowerbeingpulledoverthe foot

duringafall causedbyslippingortripping. Donot holdontothe mowerif
youarefalling;releasethe handleimmediately.

o Neverpullthe mowerbacktowardyou whileyouare walking.If youmust

backthe mowerawayfromawallor obstructionfirstlookdownand
behindtoavoidtrippingandthenfollowthesesteps:

a.Step backfrommowertofullyextendyourarms.
b.Besureyouarewell balancedwithsure footing.
c. Pull backslowly,nomorethan halfwaytowardsyou.
d.Repeatthesestepsasneeded.

o Donotoperatethemowerwhile undertheinfluenceof alcoholordrugs.
o Donotengagethe self-propelledmechanismonunits soequippedwhile

startingengine.

o Thebladecontrolhandleisa safetydevice.Neverattemptto bypassits

operation.Doingso makesthe safetydeviceinoperativeandmayresult
in personalinjurythroughcontactwiththe rotatingblade.Theblade
controlhandlemustoperateeasilyin bothdirectionsandautomatically

returntothe disengagedpositionwhenreleased.

o Neveroperatethemowerinwetgrass.Alwaysbesureof yourfooting. A

slip andfall cancauseseriouspersonalinjury. Ifyoufeelyouare losing
yourfooting,releasethe bladecontrolhandleimmediatelyandthe blade

will stoprotatingwithinthree seconds.

Mowonlyin daylightorgoodartificiallight.Walk,neverrun.

o Stopthe bladewhencrossinggraveldrives,walksor roads.

Iftheequipmentshouldstarttovibrateabnormally,stoptheengineand
checkimmediatelyforthecause.Vibrationisgenerallyawarningof

trouble.

o Shuttheengineoffandwaituntilthebladecomestoacompletestop

beforeremovingthegrasscatcheroruncloggingthechute.
Thecuttingbladecontinuestorotateforafewsecondsaftertheengine

isshutoff.Neverplaceanypartofthebodyinthebladeareauntilyou
aresurethebladehasstoppedrotating.

o Neveroperatemowerwithoutpropertrailshield,dischargecover,grass

catcher,bladecontrolhandle,orothersafetyprotectivedevicesinplace
andworking.Neveroperatemowerwithdamagedsafetydevices.Failure
todosocanresultinpersonalinjury.

o Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcancauseaburn.Donottouch.
o Onlyusepartsandaccessoriesmadeforthismachinebymanufacturer.

SLOPE OPERATION

Slopesarea majorfactorrelatedto slipandfallaccidentswhichcan resultin
severeinjury'.Operationon slopesrequiresextracaution.Ifyoufeeluneasyon
aslope,donotmowit.Foryoursafety,usethe slopegaugeincludedas part
ofthis manualtomeasureslopesbeforeoperatingthis uniton aslopedor hilly

area.Ifthe slopeisgreaterthan15degrees,do notmowit.
Do:

o Mowacrossthefaceof slopes;neverupanddown.Exerciseextreme

cautionwhenchangingdirectionon slopes.

o Watchfor holes,ruts,rocks,hiddenobjects,or bumpswhichcancause

youto slipor trip.Tallgrasscan hideobstacles.

o Alwaysbe sureof yourfooting.A slipandfall cancauseseriouspersonal

injury.If youfeelyouarelosingyourbalance,releasethe bladecontrol
handleimmediately,and thebladewill stop rotatingwithin3 seconds.

Do Not:
o Donotmowneardrop-offs,ditchesor embankments,whereyoucould

loseyour footingor balance.

o Donotmowslopesgreaterthan15degreesas shownonthe

slopegauge.

o Donotmowonwet grass.Unstablefootingcouldcauseslipping.

SERVICE

Safe Handling Of Gasoline:
o Toavoidpersonalinjuryorpropertydamageuseextremecarein

handlinggasoline.Gasolineis extremelyflammableandthevaporsare
explosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycanoccurwhengasolineisspilledon
yourselfor yourclotheswhichcan ignite.

o Washyourskin andchangeclothesimmediately.
o Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer.

o Neverfill containersinsideavehicleor ona truck ortrailerbedwitha

plasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainerson the groundawayfromyour
vehiclebeforefilling.

o Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruck ortrailerandrefuelit on

theground.Ifthis isnot possible,thenrefuelsuch equipmentonatrailer
witha portablecontainer,ratherthanfroma gasolinedispensernozzle.

o Keepthe nozzleincontactwith the rimofthe fueltankor container

openingat alltimesuntilfueling iscomplete.Donot useanozzle
lock-opendevice.

o Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersources

ofignition.

o Neverfuel machineindoorsbecauseflammablevaporswillaccumulate

inthearea.

o Neverremovegascapor addfuelwhile engineishotor running.

Allowenginetocoolat leasttwo minutesbeforerefueling.

o Neveroverfill fueltank. Filltank to nomorethan_ inchbelowbottom

offiller neckto provideforfuel expansion.

o Replacegasolinecapand tightensecurely.
o Ifgasolineisspilled,wipeit offthe engineandequipment.Moveunit

to anotherarea.Wait5 minutesbeforestarting engine.

o Neverstorethe machineorfuelcontainernearanopenflame, spark

or pilotlight as ona waterheater,spaceheater,furnace,clothesdryer,
or othergasappliances.

o Toreducefirehazard,keepmowerfreeof grass,leaves,orother

debrisbuild-up.Cleanupoilor fuelspillageand removeanyfuel
soakeddebris.

o Allowa mowertocoolat least5 minutesbeforestoring.
General Service:

o Neverrunanengineindoorsor ina poorlyventilatedarea.Engine

exhaustcontainscarbon monoxide,an odorlessand deadlygas.

o Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspecting,makecertainthebladeand

all movingparts havestopped.Disconnectthesparkplugwireand
groundagainsttheenginetopreventunintendedstarting.

o Checkthe blade andenginemountingboltsat frequentintervals

forpropertightness.Also,visuallyinspectbladefor damage(e.g.,
bent,cracked,worn)Replacebladewith theoriginalequipment

manufacture's(O.E.M.)bladeonly,listedin this manual.Use ofparts
whichdonot meetthe originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto
improperperformanceandcompromisesafetyE"

o Mowerbladesare sharpandcancut.Wrapthe bladeorweargloves,

anduseextracautionwhenservicingthem.

o Keepall nuts,bolts,andscrewstightto besure the equipmentisin

safeworkingcondition.

o Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Checktheirproper

operationregularly.

o Afterstrikingaforeignobject,stopthe engine,disconnectthe spark

plug wireand groundagainstthe engine.Thoroughlyinspectthe
mowerforanydamage.Repairthedamagebeforestartingand
operatingthe mower.

o Neverattemptto makea wheelor cuttingheightadjustmentwhilethe

engineis running.

coulddamagelawnmowerorengine.Suchobiectscouldbeaccidently
thrownbythe mowerinanydirectionandcauseseriouspersonaliniury
tothe operatorandothers.Forbestresults,donotcutwetgrassand
nevercutoff morethanone=thirdofthetotalbngth of the grass.

1. Oncetheengineis running,slowlysqueezethedrivecontrol
againsttheupperhandleto propelthe unit.Toactivatethe cutting
blades,squeezethe bladecontrolagainsttheupperhandle.

2. Tochangegears,releasethedrivecontrolbverand movethe
gearshiftlevertothe desiredsetting.Whenfirstpracticingwith
themower,put theleverinNo.1 position.Sebctforwardspeeds
accordingto mowingconditionsandterrain.Useslowerspeeds
on roughterrainorwhengrassis heavyor thick.Theforward
speedcanbe increasedonsmoothterrainorifthegrasscoveris
light.Mow thewheelsto stopcompbtelybeforeshiftingfromone
speedintoanother.

iMPORTANT:Beawarethatwhenengagingthe drivecontrolleverwith
thegearshift bver in 3rdor4thgear,thepowerandtorquegenerated
maycausetheunitto lurchforward.To avoidthis,slowlysqueezethe
drivecontrolleveragainsttheupperhandb.

3. Tostoptheblades,rebasethe bladecontrol.Tostopthedrive
controltothe wheels,releasethedrive control.

MULCHING OR SmDE-DISCHARGE MOWmNG

Youcan usethe mowereitheras a mulchingmowerorasa side=
dischargemower.Tousethemulchingfeature,insertthe mulchplug
asdescribedbelow.Removethe mulchplugtoside=dischargegrass
clippings.

Themulchplugis designedto keepthedischargechuteraisedup
whilemowing.Whentheplugis removed,thedischargechutewill

loweritselfforside=dischargemowing.

Beforeinstallingorremovingmulchplug,stopengine,waitfor parts

to stopmoving,anddisconnectsparkplugwire.

Toinstallor removemulchplug:

1. Stopthe engineandwaitfor all partstostopmoving.

2. Disconnectthespark plugwirefromthe sparkplug.

3. Toinstallthemulchplug,insertthe right=sidetab(A) ofthe plug
intothe bracketonthedeck,Figure8.

4. Insertthecoverintothe dischargeopening(B), Figure8.

5. Afterthemulchplughasbeenplacedintothedeckopening,push
theplugtowardstherearof themower(C)tofit theplugproperly
intothe opening,Figure8.

6. Toremovetheplug,slidethe coverto theright(frontof mower)to
disengagetheslotfromthemowerdeckandthen prythe left=side

ofthe coveroutandoff.

1. Releasebladeanddrivecontroltostopwheelsanddeck blades.

Engines that are certified to meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Tier 2 Emission Standards must
display information regarding the Emissions Durability Period and the Air index. Sears, Roebuck and Co., U.S.A.

makes this information available to the consumer on our emission labels.
The Emissions Durability Period describes the number of hours of actual running time for which the engine is

certified to be emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenance in accordance with the Operating & Mainte-
nance Instructions. The following categories are used:

Moderate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 125 hours of actual engine running time.
Intermediate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 250 hours of actual engine running time.
Extended: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 500 hours of actual engine running time.
For example, a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to 25 hours per year. Therefore, the Emissions

Durability Period of an engine with an intermediate rating would equate to 10 to 12 years.
The Air Index is a calculated number describing the relative level of emissions for a specific engine family. The

lower the Air Index, the cleaner the engine. This information is displayed in graphical form on the emissions label.

After July 1, 2000 certain Sears, Roebuck and Co., U.SoA. engines will be certified to meet the United States
Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Phase 2 emission standards. For Phase 2 certified engines, the Emis-
sions Compliance Period referred to on the Emissions Compliance label indicates the number of operating hours
for which the engine has been shown to meet Federal emission requirements.

For engines less than 225 cc displacement, Category C = 125 hours, B = 250 hours and A = 500 hours.
For engines of 225 cc or more, Category C = 250 hours, B = 500 hours and A = 1000 hours.

Los motores cuyo cumplimiento con los est&ndares de emisi6n Tier 2de la Comisi6n de Recursos Ambientales de California (CARB)
est6 certificado deben exhibir la informaci6n relacionada con el periodo de duraci6n de las emisiones y la clasificaci6n de aire. Sears,
Roebuck and Co., de los Estados Unidos ponen esta informaci6n a disposbi6n del consumidor en nuestras etiquetas de emisiones.

El Periodo de Duraci6n de las Emisiones describe el n[imero de horas de tiempo real de funcionamiento para el cual se certifica que
el motor cumple con las reglas de emisi6n, descontando el mantenimbnto adecuado del mismo segQn las instrucciones de oper-
aci6n y mantenimiento. Se utilizan las siguientes categorias:

Moderado:Se certifica que el motor cumple con las reglas de emisi6n durante 125 horas de tiempo real de funcionamiento del motor.
lnmediato:Se certifica que el motor cumpJe con las reglas de emisi6n durante 250 horas de tiempo real de funcionamiento del motor.
Extendido:Se certifica que el motor cump{e con las reglas de emisi6n durante 500 horas de tiempo real de funcionamiento del motor.
Por ejemplo, una cortadora de c_sped tipica que se empuja desde atr&s se usa entre 20 y 25 horas por aSo. Pot Io tanto, el Pedodo
de Duraci_Snde Emisiones de un motor con una clasificac{6n intermedia seria equivalente a entre 10 y 12a_os.
Lacmasificaci6n de aire es un nQmero calculado para describir el nivel relativo de emisiones para un grupo de motores en particular.

Cuanto menor sea lac{asificaci6n de aire, mayor es la limpieza del motor. La informaci6n se presenta de forma gr&fica en la etiqueta
de emisiones.

Despues dem1 de juHo de 2000, busque el periodo de cumpHmiento de masregmas de

emisiones en la etiqueta de cumpiimiento de las regmas de emisiones demmotor

Despu6s del 1 de juiio de 2000 se certificar& que determinados motores Sears, Roebuck and Co., de los Estados Unidos
cumplen con los estb.ndares de emisiones de la fase 2 de la Agencia de Proteccidn Ambiental de los Estados Unidos (USED
PA). Para los motores certificados para la etapa 2, el periodo de cumplimiento con las reglas de emisiones al cual se hace
referencia en la etiqueta de cumplimiento con las reglas de emisiones indica el nQmero de horas de funcionamiento para el
cual se ha demostrado que el motor cumpJe con los requerimientos federales de emisi6n.

Para los motores con desplazamiento inferior a 225 cc, Categoria C = 125 horas, B = 250 horas y A = 500 horas.
Para los motores con desplazamiento de 225 cc o m&s, Categoria C = 250 horas, B = 500 horas y A = 1000 horas.
El desplazamiento de los motores de la serie modelo 150112 es 249 cc.
