This guide provides the basic information required to install the Comtest Model 2870 Multi-Dwelling POTS
Splitter Shelf in a Multi-Dwelling location.
Installation
The 2870 requires 10¾” x 8” of mounting space. Four wood screws (not supplied) are typically required for
mounting on a wall. Comtest recommends the use of #8 wood screws, the length of which is determined by the
thickness of the wood surface on which the 2870 is installed.

Cabling Overview
The 2870 cabling configurations will vary depending on the installation. However, the physical interface to the
Front Panel connectors are standard 50-pin RJ-21 type receptacle connectors. Each 2870 provides 25 POTS
splitters terminated on each 50-pin connector.
Connector Pin Outs
As view from the rear of the shelf:
• Signals to and from the outside plant enter the
2870 splitter shelf using the RJ-21 connector
designated ‘LINE Connector’.
• Cables to and from the subscribe premises
enter the 2870 splitter shelf via the PHONE RJ21 connector, designated ‘PHONE Connector’
If the optional Punch Down Blocks are provided, the
PHONE connections are extended from the PHONE
Connector to the ‘PHONE 25 Pair to Subscribers’
punch down block. Also, the LINE/ADSL connections
are extended from the LINE Connector to both the
‘ADSL 25 Pair to Subscribers’ and ‘LINE 25 Pair from
Central Office’ punch down blocks. To connect this
arrangement up correctly, proceed as follows:
• Terminate 25-pair outside plant on the ‘LINE 25
Pair from Central Office punch down strip.
• Terminate 25-pair wiring POTS service to
subscribers on ‘PHONE 25 Pair to Subscribers’
punch down strip.
• Terminate 25-pair wiring to ADSL service to
subscribers on ‘ADSL 25 Pair to Subscribers’
punch down strip.
