About WARNINGS and CAUTIONS
Throughout this Operator’s Manual, you will find WARNINGS and
CAUTIONS in bold print. All WARNINGS and CAUTIONS must be read
carefully and followed completely. WARNINGS discuss issues that could
result in damage to your firearm, or serious injury or death to you or a
bystander. CAUTIONS discuss issues that could result in damage or
malfunction of your firearm or cause injury. Read and understand all the
WARNINGS and CAUTIONS before removing the firearm from its package.
WARNING: IF THIS FIREARM IS CARELESSLY OR IMPROPERLY HANDLED,
UNINTENTIONAL DISCHARGE COULD RESULT AND COULD CAUSE INJURY,
DEATH, OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY.
WARNING: IF THE BARREL IS VERY HOT FROM FIRING THERE IS A RISK
THAT A CARTRIDGE IN THE CHAMBER COULD DISCHARGE BY ABSORBING
HEAT FROM THE BARREL (“COOK-OFF”). THIS CAN OCCUR AT ANY TIME.
WHEN COOK-OFF IS SUSPECTED, THE CHAMBER MUST BE CLEARED
IMMEDIATELY AFTER FIRING. (See pages 54 & 55 for more information).
WARNING: ALWAYS BE AWARE OF POSSIBLE RISK FROM DROPPING
YOUR FIREARM. SOME PARTS OF THE MECHANISM COULD BE DAMAGED
ALTHOUGH YOU MAY NOT SEE THE DAMAGE. A DAMAGED FIREARM COULD
DISCHARGE AND CAUSE INJURY, DEATH OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. If your
firearm has been dropped, have your firearm examined by a competent
gunsmith or return it to Colt for Service.
WARNING: DO NOT ALTER PARTS AS THIS MAY RESULT IN THE
PREMATURE WEARING OF PARTS OR REDUCE THE LEVEL OF SAFETY,
CAUSING THE FIREARM TO MALFUNCTION. A MALFUNCTION CAN RESULT
IN AN ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE, WHICH COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY,
DEATH OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. If any parts do not function properly, have
your firearm examined by a competent gunsmith or return it to Colt for Service.
WARNING: WHEN YOU SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER, YOU MUST EXPECT THE
FIREARM TO FIRE, AND YOU MUST TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR FIRING
IT. YOUR CARE CAN AVOID ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE, AND YOU WILL
THEREBY AVOID ACCIDENTAL INJURY AND DEATH.
WARNING: THIS FIREARM MAY DISCHARGE ACCIDENTALLY WHEN A
ROUND IS FED INTO THE CHAMBER, IF IT IS DROPPED OR RECEIVES A BLOW
TO THE MUZZLE OR FRONT OF THE FIREARM. This can occur regardless of
the position of the hammer or any of the various safety devices. Therefore,
extra care and strict adherence to these instructions by the firearm user is
mandatory for minimizing the risk of accidents.

SAFETY DEPENDS ON YOU
WARNING: KEEP CLEAR AND KEEP OTHERS CLEAR OF THE EJECTION
PORT. Spent cartridges are ejected with enough force to cause injury, and the
ejection port must be unobstructed by your hand to insure safe ejection. Never
place fingers in ejection port; they could be burned by hot metal or injured by
the bolt moving forward.
WARNING: NEVER DRY FIRE YOUR FIREARM WHEN THE RECEIVERS ARE
OPEN as the level of safety could be reduced.
WARNING: ALWAYS HANDLE YOUR FIREARM AS IF IT WERE LOADED so
that you never fire it accidentally when you think it is unloaded.
WARNING: NEVER POINT YOUR FIREARM AT ANYTHING YOU DO NOT
INTEND TO SHOOT to prevent injury or death in the event of an accidental
discharge.
WARNING: NEVER LEAVE A LOADED FIREARM UNATTENDED. Someone,
especially a child, may fire it and cause injury, death, or damage to property.
WARNING: NEVER LEAVE A FIREARM COCKED READY TO FIRE as this
condition is extremely dangerous, and the firearm could easily be accidentally
discharged, causing injury, death, or damage to property.
WARNING: NEVER TAKE ANYONE’S WORD THAT A FIREARM IS
UNLOADED; check for yourself with your finger off the trigger and firearm
pointed in a safe direction, so that you never fire the firearm accidentally when
you think it is unloaded.
WARNING: ALWAYS BE SURE YOUR BACKSTOP IS ADEQUATE to stop
and contain bullets before firing so that you do not hit anything outside your
shooting area. A bullet can travel through or past your target up to 3 miles… if
in doubt, don’t shoot
WARNING: NEVER DRINK ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES OR TAKE DRUGS
BEFORE OR DURING SHOOTING, as your judgment, vision, and motor skills
could be seriously impaired making your firearm handling unsafe.
WARNING: NEVER SHOOT AT A HARD SURFACE SUCH AS ROCK, OR A
LIQUID SURFACE SUCH AS WATER. A bullet may ricochet and travel in any
direction to strike you, or an object you cannot see, causing injury, death, or
damage to property.
WARNING: NEVER DISCHARGE A FIREARM NEAR FLAMMABLE
MATERIAL. Flame and sparks erupt from the firearm when it is discharged.
Which could ignite flammable materials or cause gasses to explode.
WARNING: ALWAYS WEAR AND ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO WEAR EYE
AND EAR PROTECTION.

DESCRIPTION:
This operator’s manual describes the Colt Advanced Law Enforcement
Carbines and includes information on their features.
The Colt Advanced Law Enforcement Carbines are lightweight, gas operated,
magazine fed, 5.56 x 45mm caliber carbines. They are based on the M16/M4
series of rifles and incorporate the same safety features as those firearms. The
unique design of the Colt Advanced Law Enforcement Carbines feature a
monolithic upper receiver with MIL-STD-1913 rails at the 12, 3, and 9 o’clock
positions as well as a lower rail system with a MIL-STD-1913 rail at the 6
o’clock position.
CHARACTERISTICS OF FIREARM:
TYPE OF FIREARM:
Gas operated, 5.56x45mm caliber, using a gas operated bolt and
carrier system.
Air-cooled, magazine fed, and semi-automatic action.
Adjustable back-up iron sight (BUIS) and front sight are provided
along with MIL-STD-1913 rails for mounting optical sights and other
accessories.
The Colt Advanced Law Enforcement Carbines are chambered with a longer
throat to accommodate the 5.56x45mm NATO military M193, M855, SS109,
and MK262 ammunitions. As a result, these Carbines also can safely use .223
Remington sporting cartridges having a lower chamber pressure.
WARNING: NEVER USE AMMUNITION NOT SPECIFICALLY
DESIGNATED FOR USE IN YOUR FIREARM. FAILURE TO USE CORRECT
TYPE OR CALIBER OF AMMUNITION MAY CAUSE THE FIREARM TO JAM,
FAIL TO FIRE OR MAY GENERATE EXCESSIVE PRESSURE WHICH CAN
DAMAGE OR EVEN RUPTURE YOUR FIREARM, CAUSING PERSONAL
INJURY, DEATH, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE. To protect you from danger
and your rifle from damage, Colt does not recommend the use of
handloads or remanufactured ammunition.

FIRING CHARACTERISTICS:
Cyclic Rate of Fire:
700-900 rounds per minute (this is the theoretical number of cartridges
which could be fired automatically in one minute).
Maximum Effective Rate Of Fire:
Semi-Automatic 45-65 Rounds Per Minute
Fully-Automatic 150-200 Rounds Per Minute
Sustained Rate Of Fire 12-15 Rounds Per Minute
(Sustained Rate Of Fire- The actual rate of fire that the firearm can fire for an
indefinite length of time without serious overheating of the barrel.)
With a 1 turn in 7-inch twist for rifling, M193, M855, MK262, and .223
Remington ammunition may be fired. Muzzle velocity, muzzle energy, and
maximum effective range will vary depending on barrel length and ammunition
used.
NAME OF COMPONENT AND DESCRIPTION OF ITS FUNCTION (numbers in
parentheses correspond with diagrams on pages 13 & 14):
Charging Handle (1): Retracts bolt carrier.
Sights (2,4): Used to align firearm with target. Rear sight (2)is fully
adjustable. The front sight is adjusted only on zeroing. Both sights may
be folded down when not in use. The front sight (4) is Colt’s proprietary
folding design containing an adjustable front sight post. There is a MILSTD-1913 rail (2a) built into the monolithic upper receiver to which
various optical sights or other accessories can be secured. There are
markings on these rails to show locations for mounting accessories. The
markings allow the user to safely place the accessory back in the same
location where it was mounted before being removed. Additional rails are
located on both sides and the bottom.
Magazine Release Button (8): Releases the magazine for removal.

OPERATING FEATURES (Cont.)
Forward Assist Assembly (9): Provides a means of pushing bolt carrier
forward if the bolt fails to close and lock. Note: When you need to use
the forward assist, it is usually time to clean your firearm or a sign of a
defective cartridge. Always check the ammunition for damage before
using the forward assist.
WARNING: FORCING DAMAGED AMMUNITION INTO THE CHAMBER
COULD DAMAGE YOUR FIREARM AND COULD RESULT IN INJURY,
DEATH, OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY.
Bolt Catch (10): Holds bolt carrier in open position.
Note that the selector lever on the “semi-auto” models is reversible and
may be changed from one side to the other. See assembly instruction on
pages 31 & 32.
Buttstock Assembly (12): Sliding buttstock has four positions and may be
positioned to suit the operator
Quick Detach Sling Swivel (52): Allows the user to place the sling mount on
either the 9 or 3 o’clock rails of the upper receiver/handguard.
Lower Rail (62): Provides protection from the barrel heat and provides Mil-Std-
1913 rails at the 6 o’clock position.

MAINTENANCE:
Maintenance instructions tell the operator how to field strip, clean, lubricate,
assemble and do a functional check on the firearm. Like any other precision
mechanism, your firearm will perform better, last longer, and remain safer when
it is properly maintained. Follow the instruction in this section to keep your
firearm in good condition. A table at the end of this section deals with
malfunctions and troubleshooting.
Note: If firearm has been used in salt air, water, mud, or sand, it must be
completely disassembled, cleaned and inspected.
WARNING: ALWAYS ENSURE THAT THE FIREARM IS UNLOADED
BEFORE FIELD STRIPPING, CLEANING, LUBRICATING, AND/OR
ASSEMBLING. ALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE
DIRECTION. IF THIS FIREARM IS CARELESSLY OR IMPROPERLY
HANDLED, AN ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE COULD RESULT AND COULD
CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY, DEATH, OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY.
