Versatile
“Mix and match” the individual components of our system to components you already have... you don't have to buy an entire system to get the components you need.
Choose a plate mounting system with attached bearing modules or a universal spider system for a range of diameters. Support fixtures feature roller bearings rather than bronze bushings.
Put the rotational drive unit anywhere on the 6 or 8 inch diameter boring bar.
Compact
The Climax Model BB8000 rotational drive unit is compact, only 19 by 22 inches (482.6 x 558.8 mm) and weighs only 420 lbs (191 kg) with the hydraulic motor attached. The standard mechani­cal feed is not much larger than the bar diameter itself and weighs less than 20 lbs. (10 kg).
Mechanical feed units mount on either end of the bar. Axial feed units feature a quick-change mounting system.
The feedscrew is mounted in the boring bar with roller bearings and has replaceable end sections so the entire leadscrew doesn’t have to be replaced if only the ends are dam­aged.
Boring heads and boring­facing head combos give you a wide choice of ma­chining options. Tool carrier and counterbalance are attached to the bar in a modular stacking system so you can bore a wide range of diameters with just one tool head.
Powerful
Hydraulic boring power offers a high power­to-weight ratio and smooth, trouble-free power transmission to the boring head. Your choice of single or dual hydraulic motors combine with the gear reduction of the rotational drive to produce over 2500 ft.lbs (3,400 N•m) of boring torque.

Setup & Operation
Easy setup and operation maximize your uptime.
There are many ways to set up the Model BB8000 Boring Machine, depending on the application and clearances around the work area. To bore the surface you are mounting on, standoffs welded on the workpiece give you clearance for making tool head adjustments.
Insert the boring bar, supported on wooden V­blocks, in the bore and slip the mounting spider/ bearing plates on each end. Lift the bar to bore center and attach the mounting spiders to the workpiece, either internally or externally. Final centering adjustments are made with the jacking screws on the bearing plates.
Vertical mounting of the Model BB8000 Portable Boring Machine is used to bore a large metropolitan water system pump.
Horizontal setup of the boring bar with ID mounting spiders in a large turbine. Surface mounts or ID mounts are available.
Individually adjustable clamping feet allow precise alignment of the ID spider mounting system.
Once the bar is accurately positioned, move the rotational drive unit into place and lock it to the bar with two locking collars. Tie-down arms keep the rotational drive from turning during boring operations.
Next, place the axial feed unit on either end of the bar, install the split tool carrier, spacer blocks and tool head on the bar and you are ready to make your first boring pass. Actual boring operations are simply a matter of adjusting the boring depth at the cutter, setting the feed rate and direction and starting the machine rotation.

The Model BB8000 Portable Boring Machine is designed to meet as wide a range of applications as possible. Select only the com­ponents you need. A complete machine consists of the following:

Rotational drive unit Compact unit weighs 420 lbs. (191 kg) with a 20:1 double enveloping worm gear reduc­tion. Mounts anyplace on 6" (152.4 mm) or 8" (203.2 mm) diameter bars. Collets are needed with the 6" bars. Integral cooling fans require 115 v power.
Boring bars 6" (152.4 mm) and 8" (203.2 mm) dia. bars feature a full length, in-bar leadscrew with re­placeable ends. Collets are needed with the six-inch diameter bars. End caps allow attachment of axial feed units. Bar lengths are 8 ft (2.44 m) to 20 ft. (6.1 m). Longer bars available on special order.
Mechanical axial feed unit A revers-
ible automatic feed with manual control for setting feed rate and feed direction. Feed rates are variable from .003 to .040" (.08 to 1.01 mm) per revolution.
Tool carrier The tool carrier is a split design that may be attached anyplace on the bar. Boring heads may be attached on one side for single tool boring or both sides for boring with twin tools.
Mounting system Various com­binations of ID or end mounted support systems and roller bearing assemblies are available.
Manual facing head Attaches
to tool carrier/ spacer blocks in place of manual boring head. Has a 5" (127 mm) mechanical radial feed stroke for facing operations.
Hydraulic power units Variable displacement piston pump hydraulic power units are available in 15 or 25 hp (11.2 to 18.6 kW) models. These compact units are designed specifi­cally for portable applications.
Special accessories
Taper-cutting attachments, extra long bars, flame-cutting attachments, electric and CNC axial/radial feed units, remote boring/facing head, and other adaptations have been designed for special customer appli­cations. Ask your Climax sales representative for more information.
Drive motors
various displacements are available for the smoothest power transmis­sion in most boring operations. Use single or dual motors depending on the amount of torque needed. Electric drive motors are also available.

boring head sets are available in various diameter ranges from a minimum 16" (406 mm) diameter up the 80" (2032 mm) maximum diam­eter. Spacers are included to allow positioning of the tool head at the proper diameter. Each set includes two boring heads with carbide-insert tool holders.

End-mount self-aligning bearing

of the work piece through a slotted spider. Bar is held in place by a self-aligning bearing. Center the bar with the four adjusting screws. Two bearing assemblies are required to adequately support the bar. Support assemblies may be different styles.

Hydraulic drive motors

Split-design tool carrier mounts

Manual boring head assembly
Boring head mounts to either a 6"
or 8" tool carrier. Can bore 16" to 80" (406.4 to 2032.0 mm) diameters. Assembly includes 1" (25.4 mm), 2" (50.8 mm), 5" (127.0 mm), and 10" (254.0 mm) spacers.
