Dear Clearaudio customer,
The Clearaudio Absolute Phono is the world's first active headshell moving coil phonostage.

A tiny circuit board installed in the headshell of the tonearm amplifies the highly sensitive moving coil
cartridge signal at its source: the output of the cartridge. As a result, the signal to noise ratio is
improved by approximately ten decibels across the entire audio bandwidth.

The Absolute Phono is designed and constructed without compromise. The sophisticated power supply
is located in a separate chassis to keep mains-borne interference to a minimum. Power to the
headshell-mounted amplification stage is routed from the power supply via the main chassis.
No relays or coupling capacitors are used in the signal path a s they would otherwise degrade the
sound. In addition, hand-selected state-of-the-art non-magnetic silver Clearaudio Glimmer capacitors
are used at key areas throughout the circuit where they further contribute to the exceptional sound
quality.

The Absolute Phono features two pairs of outputs: both balanced feeding XLR connectors and
unbalanced feeding RCA phono sockets. To avoid interfering with each other each of these outputs
has its own dedicated output driver stage.

The Absolute Phono’s standby power consumption follows the latest EU directive
and is below 0.5 Watts.

For ease of use the Absol ute Phono is equipped with a bright blue single multi-fun ction switch for
‘On’, ‘Off’, ‘Mute’ and ‘Standby’ modes.
The Absolute Phono is suitable for all Clearaudio tonearms and will be installed by Clearaudio in our
factory in Erlangen, Germany.

The circuitry of the Absolute Phono is designed to work perfectly with any moving coil cartridge from
any manufacturer . This is ensured due to the selected current amplification co ntrol which eliminates
the need to set the correct load resistance and load capacitance. The optimum operating condition is
always set automatically.

1. Installation and set-up

Before you start, make sure that the tonearm is correctly installed on your turntable and is equipped
with the Clearaudio Absolute Phono headshell and Clearaudio Direct Silver Wire with the special 9–pin

connector.

To proceed with insta llation and set-up, please see the rear panel of your Clearaudio Absolute Phono.

Rear view:

Please proceed as follows:

1. Connect the special 9-pin connector from the tonearm to the input marked “input amplifier”
and gently secure with the two locking screws. Please make sure that the screws are properly
tightened and thus the plug is securely connected

2. Plug the RCA or XLR cable into the output sockets and connect them to your linestage preamplifier.

3. Connect the power supply provided to the socket marked “DC in”, “6V”, then connect this power
supply to your mains power supply.

Important: Please note that you may only use power supplies with a voltage of 6V DC!

4. Lightly press the push button on the front of the Absolute Phono. The blue LED ring will flash
approximately seven times and then glow steadily.

Your Clearaudio Absolute Phono is now ready to use and enjoy.

1.1. Mute and standby modes

To select mute, lightly press the multi-function butto n on the front of the Absolute Phono.
The LED ring will flash quickly to indicate that mute is selected.

To return to normal operation, lightly press t he button again. The LED ring will glow steadily.
To put the Absolute Phono into standby mode (power consumption 0.5 Watt), press and hold the

multi-function button until the LED ring first flashes slowly and then extinguishes.

Attention:

If the Absolute Phono is not in use, disconnect the unit completely from the power supply
by removing the main plug from the socket.

Please note:

Phonostages are devices designed to provide a very high level of amplification. This is necessary
because the electrical signal generated by a phono cartridge is extremely low (usually less than one­thousandth of a volt). The job of the phonostage is therefore to accurately equalise the phono signal
and boost it to line level (measured in volts).

However, phonostages are by nature extremely sensitive, which leads to the potential problem that
high-frequency interference may also be amplified to a point at which it becomes noticeable.

Unfortunately it is not possible to completely protect th e sensitive phonostage circuitry from this
interference without degrading its high fidelity performance. Therefore care must be take n to

position the phonostage away from sources of high frequency interference such as mobile
phones, modems and powerline communication systems (PLC) in which data is sent over
the mains po wer network.

Sehr geehrte clearaudio-Kundin, sehr geehrter clearaudio-Kunde,
Mit "Absolute Phono" präsentiert clearaudio die weltweit erste Aktivlösung für alle Moving-Coil-

Tonabnehmer (MC).
Durch die Verstärkung des Schallplattensignals direkt an der Quelle, also am Tonabnehmer, mit Hilfe
einer Platine, verbessert sich das Rauschverhältnis (Signal-to-Noise-Ratio) im gesamten Audiobereich
um rund zehn Dezibel.

Die speziell für "Absolute Phono" entwickelte RIAA - Hauptverstärkerstufe ist mit zwei Paar­Ausgängen bewusst puristisch konstruiert. Um sich gegenseitig nicht zu beeinflussen, nutzen sowohl
der balancierte XLR-Ausgang als auch der unbalancierte RCA (Cinch)-Ausgang separate Hochpegel­Ausgangstreiber. Im Signalweg gibt es keine den Klang sonst verschlechternde Relais und
Koppelkondensatoren. Mit der Auslagerung des Netzteils werden Netzeinstreuungen auf ein Minimum
begrenzt. Nicht zuletzt folgt der Stand-by-Stromverbrauch der neuesten EU-Richtlinie und liegt unter
0,5 Watt.
Ebenfalls aus eigener Produktion stammen die selektierten clearaudio Silberglimmer-Kondensatoren.
Diese weisen den geringsten Verlustfaktor aus, sind nicht-magnetisch und befi nden sich genau dort,
wo sie für die Klangqualität entscheidend sind.

Für die leichte Bedienbarkeit ist die RIAA - Hauptverstärkerstufe gezielt mit nur einem blau
beleuchteten Multifunktionstaster ausgestattet. Mit ihm lassen sich "On" und "Off" anwählen sowie die
Stummschaltung / Mute aktivieren.

Die „Absolute Phono" ka nn in alle gängigen clearaudio-Tonarme werksseitig eingebaut werden.
Die Schaltung von „Absolute Phono“ ist so ausgelegt, dass sie in Verbindung mit einem

MC– Tonabnehmer eines beliebigen Herstellers optimal funktioniert.
Dies wird durch die gewählte „Stromverstärkung – Schaltung“ gewährleistet. Dadurch entfällt die
Notwendigkeit einen optimalen Abschlusswiderstand bzw. eine Abschlusskapazität für ein
MC – System einzustellen bzw. zu suchen.
Der optimale Betriebszustand wird immer automatisch eingestellt.

1. Inbetriebnahme

Bitte vergewissern Sie sich, dass der Tonarm - der auf Ihrem Laufwerk montiert ist – mit dem
werksseitig von clearaudio vorinstallierten „Absolute Phono – Headshell“ und dem Anschlusskabel
(clearaudio Direct Silverwire mit 8 hochflexiblen Silberleitungen) mit dem speziellen
clearaudio 9 – Pin – Stecker ausgestattet ist.
Zu weiteren Inbetriebnahme betrachten Sie zuerst die Rückseite der clearaudio „Absolute Phono:

Rückansicht:

Bitte gehen Sie nun wie folgt beschrieben vor:

1. Verbinden Sie den speziellen clearaudio 9 – Pol Stecker vom Tonarm an die Buchse mit der
Beschriftung „input amp lifier“ und schrauben Sie diesen mit beiden Befestigungsschreiben fest. Bitte
achten Sie darauf, dass die Schrauben korrekt festgezogen sind und der Stecker somit fest
angeschlossen ist.

2. Schließen Sie Ihr Chinch bzw. XLR – Kabel an die jeweili gen Ausga ngs buc hse n und ver binde n Sie
diese mit Ihrem Vor – Verstärker.

3. Verbinden Sie das mitgelieferte Netzteil mit der DC – Buchse (DC in 6V) und verbinden diesen erst
danach mit dem Netzanschluss.

Wichtig: Bitte beachten Sie, dass Sie nur Netzteile mit einer Spannung von 6V DC
verwenden dürfen!

4. Betätigen Sie nun den an der Vorderseite befindlichen Taster mit einem leichten Druck.
Der blaue LED – Ring fängt hierbei das Blinken an (ca. 7 – mal) und leuchtet anschließend dauerhaft
blau.

Die clearaudio „Absolute Phono“ ist nun spielbereit.

1.1. Mute – und Stand By – Modus

Um in den Mute – Modus zu gelangen, berühren Sie mit einem leichten Druck einmal kurz den
Fronttaster. Hierbei blinkt der blaue LED-Ring ununterbrochen und schnell.

Um wieder in den Spielbetrieb zurück zu gelangen, betätigen Sie den Taster mit einem leichten,
kurzen Druck noch einmal. Der LED – Ring blinkt wieder dauerhaft.

Um die „Absolute Phono“ abzuschalten (Stand - by mit 0, 5 Watt), halten Sie den Taster etwas länger
gedrückt, bis der LED-Ring langsam blinkt und das blaue Licht erlischt.

Bitte beachten:

Falls das Gerät eine längere Zeit nicht in Benutzung ist, trennen Sie das Gerät komplett
vom Stromnetz, in dem Sie das Steckernetzteil aus der Steckdose entfernen.

Bitte beachten:

Phonovorverstärker sind Geräte mit einer hohen Signalverstärkung, da die Spannung die der
Tonabnehmer des Plattenspielers liefert sehr niedrig ist (im Bereich von einigen µV). Aus diesem
Grund werden auch hochfrequente Störsignale wahrn ehmbar verstärkt. Eine vollständige Abblockung
dieser Störsignale im Gerät würde die Audioeigenschaften verschlechtern.
Das hätte zur Folge, dass hochfrequente Störungen, zum Beispiel aus dem 230 V Netz bzw. 115 V
Netz, die Klangqualität beeinträchti gen könnte.

Das Gerät sollte daher nicht in der Nähe von Hochfrequenzerzeugenden Geräten wie z.B.
Mobiltelefonen oder Modems bzw. an Stromnetzen die für Datenverkehr genutzt werden (PLC),
betrieben werden.
