Preface
Technical Assistance Center
The Cisco TAC is available to all customers who need technical assistance with a Cisco product,
technology, or solution. Two levels of support are available: the Cisco TAC website and the Cisco TAC
Escalation Center. The avenue of support that you choose depends on the priority of the problem and the
conditions stated in service contracts, when applicable.
We categorize Ci sco TAC inquiries according to urgency:
• Priority level 4 (P4)—You need information or assistance conc erni n g Cisc o pr odu ct c apa bil ities,
product installation, or basi c product configuration.
• Priority level 3 (P3)—Your network performance is degraded. Ne twork functio nality i s noticeab ly
impaired, but most business operations continue.
• Priority level 2 (P2)—Your production network i s severely degraded, affecting signi ficant aspect s
of business operations. No workar oun d is available.
• Priority level 1 (P1)—Y our production network is down, and a critical impact to business operations
will occur if se rv ice is n ot r esto re d qui ck ly. No workaround i s available.

CHAPTER
1
Command-Line Interfaces
This chapter describes the command-line interfaces (CLI) available on the Catalyst 6500 series switches
and contains the se sect ion s:
• Switch CLI, page 1-1
• ROM Monitor CLI, page 1-13
For information regarding the A TM CLI and commands, refer to the ATM Software Configuration Guide
and Command Reference—Catalyst 5000 Family and 6000 Family Switches publication.

Intrusion Detection System Module Installation and Configuration Note publication.
For definitions of terms and acronyms listed in this publication, see Appendix A, “Acronyms.”
Catalyst 6500 series switches are multimodule systems. Commands you enter from the CLI can apply to
the entire system or to a specific module, port, or VLAN.
Y ou can configure and maintain the Catalyst 6500 series switches by entering commands from the switch
CLI. The CLI is a basic command-line interpreter similar to the UNIX C shell. Using the CLI session
command, you can access th e router configuratio n software and perform tasks suc h as histor y
substitution and alias creation.
NoteThe Catalyst 6500 series consists of the Catalyst 6500 and 6000 series switches. The Catalyst 6500 series
consists of the Catalyst 600 6, 6009, 6506, 6509, 650 9-NEB, an d 6513 swit ches. Throug hout thi s
publication and all Catalyst 6500 series switch docum ents , the phrase Catalyst 65 00 series switches
refers to these s wit che s, unl ess o th erw ise note d.
Accessing the Switch CLI
You can access the switch CLI from a console terminal co nnected to an EIA /TIA-232 port or th rough a
Telnet session. The CLI allows fixed baud rates. Telnet sessions disconnect automatically after
remaining idle for a user-defined time period.

Designating Modules, Ports, and VLANs
The Catalyst 650 0 series modul es (modu le s lots ), port s, an d VLANs a re numbe red st art ing wit h 1. The
supervisor engine modul e is module 1, re siding in the top slot. On each module , port 1 is the lef tmost
port. To reference a specific port on a specific module, the command syntax is mod/port. For example,
3/1 denotes module 3, port 1. In some commands, such as set trunk, set cam, and set vlan, you can enter
lists of ports and VLANs.

Chapter 1 Command-L ine Interfaces
You can designate ports by entering the module and port number pairs, separated by commas. To specify
a range of po rts, use a d as h ( -) bet wee n the mo dul e n umb er a nd port n umb er pai rs . Da shes take
precedence over co mm as . Th e fol lowing exam ple s sh ow several way s o f designating p orts :

Example 1: 2/1, 2/3
Example 2: 2/1- 12
Example 3: 2/1- 2/12
denotes module 2, port 1 and mod ule 2, port 3.
denotes modul e 2 , port s 1 thro ugh 12 .
also denotes mod ule 2, ports 1 throu gh 12.
Each VLAN is designated by a single number. You can specify lists of VLANs the same way you do for
ports. Individual VL ANs are se para ted by co mm as (, ); ran ge s are s epar ate d by d ashes (- ). In t he
following example, VLA Ns 1 t hrough 1 0 a nd VL AN 100 0 are speci fied:
1-10,1000
Designating MAC Addresses, IP and IPX Addresses, and IP Aliases
Some commands require a MAC address that you must designate in a standard format. The MAC address
format must be six hexadeci mal nu mb ers se para ted by hyp hen s, as shown in thi s exampl e:
00-00-0c-24-d2-fe
Some commands require an IP address. Th e IP a ddress forma t is 32 bits, written a s four octets sepa rated
by periods (dotted de ci mal fo rmat ). I P a dd resses a re m ade up of a ne twor k sec tion, a n o ptiona l su bne t
section, and a host section, as shown in this example:
126.2.54.1
If DNS is configured pr operl y on t he sw it ch, you can us e IP host na me s inste ad o f I P a dd resses . For
information on conf iguring DNS, refer to the Catalyst 6500 Series Switch Software Configuration Guide.
If the IP alias table is configured, you can use IP aliases in place of the dotted decimal IP address. This
is true for most commands that use an IP address, except commands that define the IP address or IP alias.
When entering th e IPX addres s synta x, use th e following format :
• IPX net address—1..FFFFFFFE
• IPX node address—x.x.x where x is 0..FFFF
• IPX address—ipx_net.ipx_ node (f or example 3.003 4.1245 .AB45 , A43.000 0.0000 .0001)
Using Command Completion Features
The command com ple tion f eatur es cons ist of th ese functi ons:
• Using Command Self-Repeat
• Using Keyword Lookup
• Using Partial Keyword Lookup
• Using Command Completion

1-11
Switch CLI
Using Command Self-Repeat
Use the command self-r epeat function to display mat ches to all possible keywords if a string represents
a unique match. If a unique match is not found, the longest matching string is provided. To display the
matches, enter a space after the last parameter and enter ?. Once the matches a re di spla yed, the system
comes back to the prompt and displays the last command without the ?. In the following example, notice
how the system repeats the command en tered w ithout the ?:
Console> (enable) set mls nde
disable Disable multilayer switching data export filter
enable Enable multilayer switching data export filter
engineer Engineer setting of the export filter
flow Setting multilayer switching export filter
<collector_ip> IP address
Console> (enable) set mls nde
Using Keyword Lookup
Use the keyword-lookup funct ion to disp lay a lis t of valid keywords an d argument s fo r a com ma nd. To
display the matches, enter a space after the last parameter and enter ?. For example, five parameters are
used by the set mls command. To see these parameters, enter set mls ? at the privileged prompt. In the
following example, notice how the system re peats t he comma nd entere d without the ?:
Console> (enable) set mls ?
agingtime Set agingtime for MLS cache entry
exclude Set MLS excluded protocol ports
flow Set minimum flow mask
nde Configure Netflow Data Export
statistics Add protocols to protocol statistics list
Console> (enable)
Chapter1 Command-Line Interfaces
set mls
Using Partial Keyword Lookup
Use the partial keyword-look up f unct ion to di spla y a l ist of c omm an ds tha t begin wit h a sp ec ific set of
characters. To display the matches, en ter ? immediatel y after th e last p aram eter. For example, enter co?
at the privileged prompt to display a list of commands that start with co. The system displays all
commands that begin wit h co and repe ats the comm and en tered w ithout th e ?:
Console> (enable) co?
commit Commit ACL to hardware and NVRAM
configure Configure system from network
copy Copy files between TFTP/RCP/module/flash devices
Console> (enable)
Using Command Completion
Use the command comple tion fun ction to complet e a comma nd or keyword. When you ente r a uniq ue
partial character string and press Tab, the syste m completes the command or keyword on the command
line. For example, if you enter co at the privileged prompt and press Tab, the system completes the
command as configure because it is the only command that matches the criteria.
If no completion ca n be done, no a ction i s carr ied o ut an d the syst em re tu rns to the p rom pt and t he last
command. The c urso r ap pear s imm ed iat el y a fte r t he keyword, al lowing y ou to e nt er ad dit iona l
information.

ROM Monitor CLI
The ROM monitor is a ROM-based program that executes upon platf orm start up, reset , or when a fatal
exception occurs.
Accessing the ROM Monitor CLI
The system enters R OM-m onitor mod e if the switch doe s not find a valid system image, if the NVRAM
configuration is corrupted, or if the configuration register is set to enter ROM-monitor mode. From the
ROM-mo nitor mod e, you ca n load a s yst em image ma nua lly from Flash memory, from a network server
file, or from bootflash. You can also enter R OM-monitor mode by restarting the switch and pressing the
Break key during the first 60 seconds of startup.
NoteBreak is always enabled for 60 seconds af ter rebooti ng the system , regardless of wheth er Break is
configured to be off by configuration register settin gs.
To connect through a terminal server, escape to the Telnet prompt, and enter the send break command
to break back to the ROM-monitor mode.
ROM Monitor CLI
Operating the ROM Monitor CLI
The ROM monitor commands are used to load and copy system images, micr ocode im ages, and
configuration files. System images contain the system software. Microcode images contain microcode
to be downloaded to various hardware devices. Configurati on files contain c omman ds to customi ze
Catalyst 6500 series software.
The manual boot comm and has the following syntax:
NoteEnter the copy file-id {tftp | flash | file-id} co mma nd to obt ai n an i ma ge f ro m t h e ne twork .
• boot—Boot from ROM
• boot [-xv] [device:][imagename]—Boot from the local device. If you do not specify an image name,
the system defaults to the first valid file in the device. The image name is case sensitive.
Once you are in ROM-monitor mode, the prompt changes to rommon 1>. While you are in ROM-monitor
mode, each time you enter a command, the number in the prompt increments by one.

clear mls entry
Chapter 2Catalyst 6500 Series Switch and ROM Monitor Commands
Up to 16 routers can be included explicitly as MLS-RPs.
To use a router as an MLS, you must meet these conditions:
• The router must be included (either explicitly or automatically) in the MLS-SE.
• The MLS feature must be enabled in the Catalyst 6500 series switches.
• The Catalyst 6500 series switches m ust know the rout er’s MAC-VLAN pairs.
Use the following syntax to specify an IP subnet address:
• ip_subnet_addr—This i s the sho rt su bnet addr e ss form at. T he t rail ing de cim al n umbe r 0 0 in an IP
address YY.YY.YY.00 specifies the boun dary for an IP subnet add ress. For example, 172. 22.36.00
indicates a 24-bit sub ne t a ddress (su bnet m ask 1 72.22. 36. 00/2 55.255 .25 5. 0), a nd 17 3.2 4. 00.00
indicates a 16-bit subnet address (subnet mask 173.24.00.00/255.255.0.0). However, this format can
identify only a sub ne t a ddress of 8 , 1 6, or 2 4 b its.
• ip_addr/subnet_mask—Thi s is the long subn et addre ss forma t. For example,
172.22.252.00/2 55.255.25 2.00 in dicate s a 22-bit subn et addre ss. This for mat can spec ify a subnet
address of any bit number. To provide more flexibility, the ip_addr is a full host addr ess, such as
172.22.253.1/255.2 55. 252.00 .
• ip_addr/maskbits—This is the simplified long subnet address format. The mask bits specify the
number of bits of the network mask s. For example, 172. 22.252.00 /22 indic ates a 22-b it subnet
address. The ip_addr is a full host addre ss, such as 193.2 2.253.1/ 22, whi ch has the same subnet
address as the ip_ subn et_a ddr.
If you do not use the al l argument in the clear mls entry command, you must specify at le as t o ne of th e
other three keywords (source, destination, or protocol) and its ar gumen ts.
If no value or 0 is en te red fo r src_port and dest_port, all entries are cleared.
When you remove a Multilayer Switch Module (MSM) from the C atalyst 6500 series switch, it is
removed immediately from the inclusion list and all the MLS entries for the MSM are removed.
ExamplesThis example shows how to clear the MLS entries with destination IP address 172.20.26.22:
ip_addr(Optional) IP address of the entry.
mask_len(Optional) Mask length associated with the IP or IPX address of
the entry; valid values are from 0 to 32.
ipx_addr(Optional) IPX address of the entry.
