Battery Pack Handling Precautions
zKeep the battery pack and camera terminals
() clean at all times. Dirty terminalsmay cause a poor contact between the battery pack and camera. Polish the terminals with a tissue or a dry cloth before charging or using the battery pack.
zDo not cover the battery chargerwith anything,
such as a tablecloth, cushion or blanket, when itischarging. Heat will build up internally and possibly lead to fire.
zDo not charge Battery otherthan Battery Pack NB-
2LH/NB-2L (sold separately) with the supplied battery charger.
zThe battery packcontinues to discharge a small
amount when leftin the camera (even with the power turned off) or battery charger. This shortens the battery life. Remove the battery pack when the camera is not in use.
zDo notallow any metal objects such askeyrings to
touch the "+" and "-" terminals(Fig. A), as this can damage the battery pack. To carrythe batterypack, or store itduring periods ofdisuse, always replace the terminal cover (Fig. B).When usingBattery Pack NB-2LH,you can distinguish between a discharged battery pack andfully charged battery pack by changing the direction of the batterycover
(Fig. C and D).Recharge the battery fully before using itagain.

Used Battery
Attach in theopposite way of Fig.C.
zEven charged battery packs continue todischarge
naturally. You are advised to charge the batteryon the day of use, orone day before, to ensurea full charge.
zSince storing a fully charged battery pack for long
periods of time(about 1 year) can shorten its lifecycle or affect performance, store the battery in an indoor location with low relative humidity and between the temperatures of 0 to 30°C (32 to86°F). If you do notuse the battery pack forlong periods of time, charge itfully and discharge it fully

in the camera atleast once a year before returning it to storage.
zThe camera consumes the battery charge when
the power is on even when a function is not being used. To conserve the battery charge, be particularly attentive in turning the camera off.
zAlthough the battery pack's maximum operating
range is 0 to 40 range is 10 to 30
°C (32 to 104 °F), the optimal
°C(50 to 86 °F). Atcold
temperatures, such as those experienced when skiing, performance will temporarily decline, reducing the usable timebefore recharging.
zIfthe usable time of a battery packdiminishes
substantiallyeven when fully charged, it should be replaced.

See Battery Performance (p.156).
CF Card Handling Precautions
zCFcards are high-precision electronic devices.Do
notbend, force, or subject them to shocks or vibration.
zDo not attempt to disassemble or alter a CFcard.zMoving a CF card rapidly between temperature
extremesmay cause condensation to formin the card, leading to potential malfunctions. To avoid condensation formation, place the CF card ina sealed plastic bag before moving itinto a differenttemperature zone and allow it to adjust slowly to the new temperature. If condensation forms on the CF card, put it aside until the water dropletshave evaporated completely.
Page 21
zPlace the CFcard in the supplied case for storage.zDo not use or store CF cardsin the following types
of locations.
-Locations subject to dustor sand
-Locations subject to high humidity and high temperatures
Microdrives are a recording medium with a hard disk. Their merits are a large capacity and a low priceper megabyte ofcapacity. However, theycan be moresusceptible to vibrations and shocksthan CF cards, which use durable flash memories. Please be careful, therefore, not to subject the camera to vibrations or shockswhen using a microdrive, especially while recording or playing back.
Formatting a CF Card
You should always format a new CF card or one from which youwish to erase allimages and other data.
Please note that formatting (initializing) a CFcard erases all data, including protectedimages and otherfile types. Please check the contents of the CFcard before formatting it.
If the camera does not work properly, the
inserted CF card maybe malfunctioning.Reformatting the CFcard may solve the problem.
When a non-Canon brand CF card is
malfunctioning, reformatting itmay solve the problem.
CFcards formatted in another camera,
computer or peripheral device may not operate correctly. When that happens, reformat the CFcard with thiscamera. If formatting in the camera does not work properly, turn the camera off and reinsertthe CF card. Then turn thecamera back on and format again.
The capacity of the CFcard displayed after
formatting will be less than the rated capacity ofthe CF card. This is not a malfunction of the CF card or camera.

Setting the Shutter Speed
When you set the shutter speed in the shutter speed-priority AEmode, the camera automatically selects an aperture value to match the brightness.Faster shutter speedsallow you to catch aninstantaneous image of a moving subjectwhile slower speeds create a flowing effect and allow you to shoot withouta flash in darkareas.
6. Shooting-Advanced Functions73
Page 76
zAdjust the shutter speed using the W or X arrow
when the image is underexposed (insufficient light) or overexposed (too much light) and the correctexposure cannotbe obtained.
zThe nature of CCD imagesensors is such that
noise in the recorded image increases at slow shutter speeds. This camera, however, applies special processingto images shotat shutter speedsslower than 1.3 seconds to eliminate the noise, thereby producing high-quality images.Nevertheless, a certain amount of processing timemay be required before the next image can be shot.
zThe aperture value and shutter speed change
according to the zoom state as follows.

Shutter Speed Display
The numbers in thetable below indicate the shutterspeed in seconds.1/160 indicates 1/160 second. Also, quote marks indicate the decimal place, so that0"3 indicates 0.3 second and 2" indicates 2 seconds.
When you set the aperture in the aperture-priority AEmode, the camera automatically selects a shutterspeed to match the brightness.Selectinga lower aperture value (opening the aperture) allows you to blur the background and create a beautiful portrait. A higheraperture value (closing it) brings the entire range from foreground tobackground into focus. The larger the aperture value, the greater the range of the image broughtinto clear focus.
Page 77
zAdjust the aperture value using the W orX arrow
when the image is underexposed (insufficient light)or overexposed (too much light) and the correctexposure cannotbe obtained.
zSome aperture values cannot be selected
depending on the zoomposition.
zIn this mode, the maximum shutter speed with
synchronized flash is 1/250 second. The aperture value setting maytherefore be changed automatically to match the synchronized flash speed even ifits value was set previously.
Aperture Setting Display
The larger the aperture value, the smaller the lens aperture.
Youcan manually set the shutter speed and aperture to achieve a particular effect. This is convenient for shooting fireworks and other images where it isdifficult to setthe correct exposure automatically.
zThe brightness of the LCD monitor matches the
selected shutter speed and aperture value. If theflash is set to (Flash on, with red-eye reduction) or (Flash on), the LCD Monitor will always appear bright.
zWhen you press the shutterbutton halfway, the
difference between the standard exposure* and the selected exposure appears on the LCD monitor. Ifthe difference is more than 2 stops, "-2" or "+2" appears in redon the LCD monitor.
*
The standard exposure is calculated by the AEfunction according to the selected metering method.
