Quick Start Guide
L351 ESU
Overview
This document provides instructions for installation and initial configuration of the Canoga
Perkins model L351 ESU (Ethernet Service Unit). The EdgeAccess L351 Ethernet Service Unit
is a managed Ethernet and Fast Ethernet Compliant device that supports native 10Mbps and
100Mbps Transparent LAN extension circuits. The L351 offers 10/100 auto sensing or software
configurable User Interface and a variety of optical network interfaces. The L351 is modular and
hot swappable with a common form factor to mount in Canoga Perkins’ Carrier Class Universal
Chassis System (UCS) as well as a variety of Customer Premise Enclosures (CPE).
Parts List
1 x L351-xxxx
1 x UCS 1000 or UCS 1002 chassis
1 x UCS 1001 chassis
1 x UCS 1230 BAM (Bus Access Module)
1 x Model 1020-2100 (management access CPE) or 1030-2200 (unmanaged CPE)
1 x EIA-232 serial cable (straight)
1 x EIA-232 to DB9 converter (Canoga Perkins p/n CRJ-D9F-10)
Step 1: Unpacking
Unpack the L351 and check the unit for damage. If the unit is damaged, contact Canoga Perkins’
Tech Support line, (800) 360-6642, and ask for an RMA.
Step 2: Module Set Up
Before installation into a chassis or enclosure, you must verify the application in which the L351
will be used, i.e. 10Mbps or 100Mbps Ethernet, managed or non-managed etc. The application
may require setting the dip switches located at the rear of the L351. If the unit is to be installed in
the UCS 1030 enclosure, set the L351 to the desired configuration using Table 1 as a reference.
Otherwise, the L351 can be configured through software to the desired configuration when
installed in the UCS 1000, 1001, 1002 or 1020.

Step 3: Module Installation
Several options for installation are available for the L351. For applications requiring multiple
modules in the same location, depending on the size and quantity requirements, the UCS 1000 or
1002 chassis may be used. The UCS 1000 chassis, in conjunction with model 1230 BAM, can
accommodate up to 30 L351s and the UCS 1002 can accommodate up to 14 L351s. The L351 is
also hot-swappable module and it can be inserted any time without interruption of service to other
modules.
Insert the L351 in an available slot in the 1230 or UCS 1002 making sure that the unit is lined-up
with the card guides. The module should slide into the slot with ease and make contact with the
rear connector without excessive force. Tighten the thumbscrew after insertion. The same steps
apply when installing in the UCS 1020 or 1030. See Figures 2 to 5.
