Getting Started
Before you begin to operate the navigation
system, read this manual thoroughly to become
familiar with it and to understand how the
system works.
Keeping your mind on the drive is important for
safe driving. See “Defensive Driving” in the Index
of your vehicle’s owner manual for more
information. Get familiar with your vehicle’s
navigation system so you can use it with less
effort and take full advantage of its features. Your
navigation system includes not only navigation,
but also audio functions. While your vehicle
is parked:
• Familiarize yourself with all of its controls:
hard keys on the faceplate and touch-sensitive
screen buttons.
• Familiarize yourself with its operation.
• Set up your audio by presetting your favorite
stations, setting the tone, and adjusting the
speakers. Then, when driving conditions
permit, you can tune to your favorite stations
using the presets and steering wheel
controls (if equipped).
• Set up the navigation features that can only
be done before you begin driving, such as
entering an address or a preset destination.
Entering a destination or alphanumeric text
requires many steps, so you can only perform
these operations when the vehicle is in PARK (P).
You will notice that touch-sensitive screen
buttons leading to the alphanumeric keyboard are
dimmed out while driving.
6
Other functions may also be locked out while
driving and they too will appear grayed out on the
screen — but all functions are available when
parked. Some functions can be performed while
driving, as long as you can do so without diverting
too much of your attention from your driving.
{CAUTION:
This system provides you with a far greater
access to audio stations and song listings.
Giving extended attention to entertainment
tasks while driving can cause a crash and
you or others can be injured or killed.
Always keep your eyes on the road and
your mind on the drive — avoid engaging
in extended searching while driving.
{CAUTION:
Looking at the moving map on the
navigation screen frequently or for too long
while driving can cause a crash and you or
others can be injured or killed. Keep your
eyes and mind on the road and avoid
looking too long or too often at the moving
map on the navigation screen. Use the
voice guidance directions whenever
possible.
The navigation system allows you to do the
following:
• Plan a route with provided turn-by-turn route
and map guidance with voice prompts.
• Select a destination using various methods
and choices.
• Receive RDS broadcast announcements.
7
The information in the system may not always be
complete. Road conditions such as prohibited
turns, detours, and construction zones, change
frequently. It is important to consider whether you
can follow the directions given by the system
for the current conditions.
Each time the vehicle is started and the navigation
system is turned on, the Caution screen or the
previous active screen will appear dependent on
system power off time. If the Caution screen
appears, touch OK to load the map DVD
information.
If OK is not selected, all hard keys except for NAV
(Navigation) and DEST (Destination) can be
accessed. Once the NAV or DEST hard keys are
pressed, this Caution screen will appear and
OK must be pressed to load the map DVD
information from the map disc.
When getting started you may set the navigation
system to your preference using various
options. To do so, reference the following topics:

Global Positioning System (GPS)
The navigation system determines the position of
your vehicle by using satellite signals, various
vehicle signals, and map data.
At times, other interferences such as the satellite
condition, road configuration, the condition of
the vehicle and/or other circumstances can
interfere with the Navigation’s ability to determine
the accurate position of the vehicle.
The GPS shows the current position of your
vehicle using signals sent by the GPS Satellites of
the United States Department of Defense.
When your vehicle is not receiving signals from
the satellites, a symbol will appear on the
map screen. Refer to Symbols on page 21.
This system may not be available or interferences
may occur if any of the following are true:
• Signals are obstructed by tall buildings, large
trucks, or a tunnel.
• Objects are located on the rear shelf.
• Satellites are being repaired or improved.
• After-market glass tinting has been applied to
the vehicle’s rear windshield.
Notice: Do not apply after-market glass tinting
to the vehicle’s windows. Glass tinting will
interfere with the system’s ability to receive
GPS signals and cause the system to
malfunction. You might have to replace the
window to correct the problem. This would not
be covered by your warranty.
For more information if you are experiencing a
problem, see If the System Needs Service
on page 55 and Problems with Route Guidance on
page 55.
53
Vehicle Positioning
At times, the position of the vehicle on the map
may be inaccurate due to one or more of the
following reasons:
• The road system has changed.
• The vehicle is driving on slippery road
surfaces such as in sand, gravel, and/or snow.
• The vehicle is traveling on winding roads.
• The vehicle is on a long straight road.
• The vehicle is approaching a tall building or a
large vehicle.
• The surface streets run parallel to a freeway.
• The vehicle has just been transferred by a
vehicle carrier or a ferry.
• The current position calibration is set
incorrectly.
• The vehicle is traveling at high speed.
• The vehicle changes directions more than
once, or when the vehicle is turning on a
turn table in a parking lot.
• The vehicle is entering and/or exiting a
parking lot, garage, or a lot with a roof.
• The GPS signal is not received.
• A roof carrier is installed on your vehicle.
• The vehicle is being driven with tire chains.
• The tires are replaced.
• The tire pressure for your tires is incorrect.
• The tires are worn.
• The first time the map DVD is inserted.
• The battery is disconnected for several days.
• The vehicle is driving in heavy traffic where
driving is at low speeds, and the vehicle is
stopped and started repeatedly.
If you experience problems with your system, see
your dealer.
54
Problems with Route Guidance
Inappropriate route guidance may occur under one
or more of the following conditions:
• You have not turned onto the road indicated.
• Route guidance may not be available
when using automatic rerouting for the next
right or left turn.
• The route may not be changed when using
automatic rerouting.
• There is no route guidance when turning at an
intersection.
• Plural names of places may be announced
occasionally.
• It may take a long time to operate automatic
rerouting during high-speed driving.
• Automatic rerouting may display a route
returning to the set waypoint if you are heading
for a destination without passing through a
set waypoint.
• The route prohibits the entry of a vehicle due
to a regulation by time or season or any
other regulation which may be given.
• Some routes may not be searched.
• The route to the destination may not be
shown if there are new roads, if roads
have recently changed, or if certain roads are
not listed on the map DVD. See OrderingMap DVDs on page 56.
To recalibrate the vehicle’s position on the map,
see your dealer.

Ordering Map DVDs
You will receive two free DVD map disc updates
with the purchase of your new vehicle. Updates
are necessary to make sure that your vehicle’s
navigation system has the most accurate
information available about streets/roads, points of
interest, and business locations.
The updates are provided by the GM Nav Disc
Center at the first and second anniversary dates
of your vehicle’s delivery date. About four to
six weeks before those anniversary dates, you will
receive a post card from the GM Nav Disc Center
reminding you that a free update is available. The
center will request confirmation of your mailing
address either by having you contact the toll-free
number, 1-877-NAV-DISC (1-877-628-3472), or the
center’s website, www.gmnavdisc.com. After
verifying your address you should receive the
updated disc in about two weeks. After receiving
the updated disc, replace the old disc in the
navigation system. See “Installing the DVD Map
Disc” and “Ejecting the DVD Map Disc” under Mapson page 18. Dispose of the old disc to avoid
confusion about which disc is the most current.
If you have any questions about the operation of
the navigation system or the update process,
call the GM Nav Disc Center or go to the center’s
website. If you need any future updates or a
replacement disc, because the current disc is lost,
damaged, or needs to be updated, call the GM
Nav Disc Center or order a new disc online.
To order a disc, have your Vehicle Identification
Number (VIN) available. This helps the center
make sure you receive the correct and most up to
date DVD map disc for your vehicle. See
“Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)” in the Index
of your vehicle’s owner manual for more
information.
Database Coverage Explanations
Coverage areas vary with respect to the level of
map detail available for any given area. Some
areas will feature greater levels of detail than
others. If this happens, it does not mean there is a
problem with the system. As the map DVD is
updated, more detail may become available for
areas which previously had limited detail. See
Ordering Map DVDs on page 56.

Radio Data System (RDS)
The audio system has a Radio Data System
(RDS). RDS features are available for use only on
FM stations that broadcast RDS information.
With RDS, the radio can do the following:
• Seek to stations broadcasting the selected
type of programming
• Receive announcements concerning local and
national emergencies
• Display messages from radio stations
This system relies on receiving specific information
from these stations and will only work when the
information is available. In rare cases, a radio
station may broadcast incorrect information that will
cause the radio features to work improperly. If this
happens, contact the radio station.
The RDS system is always on. When information is
broadcast from the FM station you are listening to,
the station name or call letters will be displayed on
the audio screen. RDS may provide a program type
(PTY) for current programming and the name of the
program being broadcasted.

CD Player
The player can be used for CD and MP3. If your
vehicle has RSE, the player can be used for
CD, MP3, DVD audio, and as a DVD video player.
See DVD Player on page 75 for more information
about DVD audio and video.
With the ignition on, insert a CD partway into the
slot, label side up. The player will pull it in and
the CD should begin playing. While playing a CD,
the navigation system is available. If you insert
a CD with the system off and the ignition on, it will
start to play.
When you insert a CD, the CD tab will display.
If you turn off the ignition or radio with a CD in the
player, it will stay in the player. When you turn
on the ignition or radio, the CD will start playing
where it stopped, if it was the last selected
audio source.
As each new track starts to play, the track number
will appear on the display.
The CD player can play the smaller 3 inch (8cm)
single CDs with an adapter ring. Full-size CDs
and the smaller CDs are loaded in the same
manner.
67
If playing a CD-R the sound quality may be reduced
due to CD-R quality, the method of recording, the
quality of the music that has been recorded, and the
way the CD-R has been handled. There may be an
increase in skipping, difficulty in finding tracks,
and/or difficulty in loading and ejecting. If these
problems occur, check the bottom surface of the
CD. If the surface of the CD is damaged, such as
cracked, broken, or scratched, the CD will not play
properly. If the surface of the CD is soiled, see
“Care of Your CDs” in the Index of your vehicle’s
owner manual.
If there is no apparent damage, try a known
good CD.
Notice: If a label is added to a CD, or more
than one CD is inserted into the slot at a time,
or an attempt is made to play scratched or
damaged CDs, the CD player could be
damaged. While using the CD player, use only
CDs in good condition without any label,
load one CD at a time, and keep the CD player
and the loading slot free of foreign materials,
liquids, and debris.
Do not add any label to a CD, it could get caught
in the CD player. If a CD is recorded on a
personal computer and a description label is
needed, try labeling the top of the recorded CD
with a soft marker instead.
If an error appears on the display, see “CD
Messages” later in this section.

69
Using an MP3 CD
MP3 Format
There are guidelines that must be met, when
creating an MP3 disc. If the guidelines are not met
when recording a CD-R(W), the CD may not
play. The guidelines are:
• ID3 tag information is displayed by the radio if
it is available. The radio supports ID3 tag
information v1.0 or v1.1. The radio will display
a filename, song name, artist name, album
name, and directory name.
• Maximum 32 characters, including spaces, in
a file or folder name.
• Maximum number of folders is 253 with a
maximum hierarchy of eight folders.
• Create a folder structure that makes it easy to
find songs while driving. Organize songs by
albums using one folder for each album.
Each folder or album should contain 18 songs
or less.
• It is recommended that there is a maximum of
192 files on a disc.
• The files can be recorded on a CD-R or CD-RW
with a maximum capacity of 700MB.
• DVD with MP3 are not playable on this system.
Root Directory
The root directory will be treated as a folder. If the
root directory has compressed audio files, the
directory will be displayed as ROOT. All files
contained directly under the root directory will be
accessed prior to any root directory folders.
However, playlists (Px) will always be accessed
before root folders or files.
Empty Directory or Folder
If a root directory or a folder exists somewhere
in the file structure that contains only folders/
subfolders and no compressed files directly
beneath them, the player will advance to the
next folder in the file structure that contains
compressed audio files and the empty folder
will not be displayed or numbered.
70
No Folder
When the CD contains only compressed files, the
files will be located under the root folder. The
next and previous folder functions will have
no function on a CD that was recorded without
folders or playlists. When displaying the name of
the folder the radio will display ROOT.
When the CD contains only playlists and
compressed audio files, but no folders, all files will
be located under the root folder. The left and
right arrow buttons will search playlists (Px) first
and then go to the root folder. When the radio
displays the name of the folder the radio will
display ROOT.
Order of Play
Tracks will be played in the following order:
• Play will begin from the first track in the first
playlist and will continue sequentially through
all tracks in each playlist. When the last
track of the last playlist has been played, play
will continue from the first track of the first
playlist.
• If the CD does not contain any playlists, then
play will begin from the first track under the
root directory. When all tracks from the
root directory have been played, play will
continue from files according to their numerical
listing. After playing the last track from the
last folder, play will begin again at the
first track of the first folder or root directory.
When play enters a new folder, the display will not
automatically show the new folder name. The
new track name will appear on the display.
File System and Naming
The song name that will display will be the song
name that is contained in the ID3 tag. If the
song name is not present in the ID3 tag, then the
radio will display the file name without the
extension (such as .mp3) as the track name.
Track names longer than 32 characters or four
pages will be shortened. The display will not show
parts of words on the last page of text and the
extension of the filename will not display.
71
Preprogrammed Playlists
You can access preprogrammed playlists which
were created by WinAmp™, MusicMatch™,
or Real Jukebox™ software, however, you will not
have editing capability. These playlists will be
treated as special folders containing compressed
audio song files.
Playing an MP3
With the ignition on, insert a CD partway into the
slot, label side up. The player will pull it in and
the CD should begin playing. While playing a CD,
the navigation system is available. If you insert

DVD Messages
If Disc Read Error appears on the display and/or
the DVD comes out, it could be for one of the
following reasons:
• If a disc was inserted with an invalid or
unknown format.
• If the disc is not from a correct region.
• If the map DVD disc was installed into the
DVD audio/video slot. See “Installing the
Map DVD” under Maps on page 18 for more
information.
• It is very hot. When the temperature returns to
normal, the DVD should play.
• You are driving on a very rough road. When
the road becomes smoother, the DVD
should play.
• The DVD is dirty, scratched, wet, or
upside down.
• The air is very humid. If so, wait about an
hour and try again.
• There may have been a problem while
burning the DVD.
• The label may be caught in the DVD player.
If the DVD is not playing correctly, for any other
reason, try a known good DVD.
If any error occurs repeatedly or if an error cannot
be corrected, contact your dealer.
Rear Seat Entertainment System
Your vehicle may have the Digital Versatile Disc
(DVD) Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) system.
The RSE system includes a video display screen,
two sets of wireless headphones, and a remote
control.
See DVD Player on page 75 for all information on
inserting a DVD and using the navigation
system screens for DVD play.
Parental Control
See “DVD Menu Options” under DVD Player on
page 75 for parental control information.
Before You Drive
The RSE system is for rear seat passengers only.
The driver cannot safely view the video screen
while driving and should not try to do so.
82
Headphones
The RSE includes two 2-channel wireless
headphones that are dedicated to this system.
These headphones are used to listen to media
such as CDs, DVDs, MP3s, DVDAs, radio, or any
auxiliary source connected to the auxiliary input
jack, if your vehicle has this feature or A/V
jacks. The wireless headphones have a power
On/Off button, channel selector switch (1 or 2), and
a volume control.
If your vehicle has a third row video screen
display, it will have two additional headphones.
Push the power button to turn on the headphones.
An indicator light located on the headphones
will come on. If the light does not come on, the
batteries may need to be replaced. See “Battery
Replacement” later in this section for more
information. Switch the headphones to Off when
not in use. Channel 1 is dedicated to the video
screen, while Channel 2 is dedicated to RSA
selections.
The infrared transmitters are located at the rear of
the RSE center console. The headphones will shut
off automatically to save the battery power if the
RSE system and the RSA are shut off or if the
headphones are out of range of the transmitters for
more than 3 minutes. If you move too far forward or
step out of the vehicle, the headphones will lose the
audio signal.
The headphones will automatically turn off after
four hours of continuous use.
83
To adjust the volume on the headphones, use the
volume control located on the right side.
For optimal audio performance, the headphones
must be worn correctly. The symbol L (Left)
will appear on the upper left side, above the ear
pad and should be positioned on the left ear.
The symbol R (Right) will appear on the upper
right side, above the ear pad and should be
positioned on the right ear.
Notice: Do not store the headphones in heat
or direct sunlight. This could damage the
headphones and repairs will not be covered by
your warranty. Keep the headphones stored
in a cool, dry place.
The foam ear pads attached to the headphones
may become worn or damaged if they are
not handled or stored properly. If the foam ear
pads do become damaged or worn out, the pads
can be replaced separately from the headphone
set. It is not necessary to replace the complete
headphone set. The headphone replacement foam
ear pads can be ordered in pairs. See your
dealer for more information.
Battery Replacement
To change the batteries, do the following:
1. Turn the screw with a coin or screw driver to
loosen, then slide open the battery door
located on the left side of the headphones.
2. Replace the two AAA batteries in the
compartment. Make sure that they are
installed correctly, using the diagram on the
inside of the battery compartment.
3. Replace the battery door and tighten the door
screw.
If the headphones are to be stored for a long
period of time, remove the batteries and keep them
in a cool, dry place.
84
Audio/Video (A/V) Jacks
The A/V jacks are located on the rear of the floor
console. The A/V jacks allow audio or video
signals to be connected from an auxiliary device
such as a camcorder or a video game unit to
the RSE system. Adapter connectors or cables
may be required to connect the auxiliary device to
the A/V jacks. Refer to the manufacturer’s
instructions for proper usage.
The A/V jacks are color coded to match typical
home entertainment system equipment. The yellow
jack (A) is for the video input. The white jack (B)
is for the left audio input. The red jack (C) is for the
right audio input.
Power for auxiliary devices is not supplied by the
radio system.
To use the auxiliary inputs of the RSE system,
connect an external auxiliary device to the
color-coded A/V jacks and turn both the auxiliary
device and the video screen power on. If the
video screen is in the DVD player mode, pressing
the AUX button on the remote control will
switch the video screen from the DVD player
mode to the auxiliary device. The radio will play
the audio of the connected auxiliary device
by sourcing to auxiliary.
How to Change the RSE Video Screen
Settings
The screen display mode (normal, full, and zoom),
screen brightness, and setup menu language
can be changed from the on screen setup menu.
To change any feature, perform the following:
1. Press the display menu button on the remote
control.
2. Use the remote control menu navigation
arrows and the enter button to use the
setup menu.
3. Press the display menu button again to

Audio Output
Video Screen
Audio from the DVD player or auxiliary inputs may
be heard through the following possible sources:
• Wireless Headphones
• Vehicle Speakers
• Vehicle wired headphone jacks, if your vehicle
has this feature.
The RSE system will always transmit the audio
signal by infrared to the wireless headphones,
if there is audio available. See “Headphones”
previously for more information.
The RSE system is capable of outputting audio to
the vehicle speakers by using the navigation
system. The RSE system may be selected as an
audio source on the navigation system if the RSE
system power is on. Once the RSE system is
selected as an audio source on the navigation
system, adjust the speaker volume, if necessary. If
the RSE system power is not on, the RSE system
will not be an available source on the radio.
The RSE system is capable of outputting audio to
the wired headphone jacks (if equipped).
The video screen is located in the center console.
Notice: Avoid directly touching the video
screen, as damage may occur. See “Cleaning
the Video Screen” later in this section for
more information.
To use the video screen, rotate the screen to the
desired viewing position.
When the video screen is not in use, rotate it to its
closed position.
If a DVD is playing and the screen is rotated to its
closed position, the screen will remain on, this
is normal, and the DVD will continue to play
through the previous audio source. Use the remote
control power button or eject the disc to turn off
the screen.
The RSE console contains the IR transmitters for
the wireless headphones and the IR receivers
for the remote control. They are located above the
display. If the screen is in the closed position,
the signals will not be available for the operation
of the headphones or the remote control.
86
Remote Control
Notice: Storing the remote control in a hot
area or in direct sunlight can damage it,
and the repairs will not be covered by your
warranty. Keep the remote control stored in a
cool, dry place.
To use the remote control, aim it at the transmitter
window above the video screen and press the
desired button. Direct sunlight or very bright light
may affect the ability of the RSE transmitter to
receive signals from the remote control. If
the remote control does not seem to be working,
the batteries may need to be replaced. See
“Battery Replacement” later in this section. Objects
blocking the line of sight may also affect the

Rear Seat Audio (RSA)
This feature allows rear seat passengers to listen
to and control any of the music sources: radio,
CDs, DVDs, or other auxiliary sources. However,
the rear seat passengers can only control the
music sources the front seat passengers are not
listening to (except on some radios where
dual control is allowed). For example, rear seat
passengers can listen to and control a CD through
the headphones, while the driver listens to the
radio through the front speakers. The rear
seat passengers have control of the volume for
each set of headphones.
You can operate the RSA functions even when
the main radio is off.
Audio can be heard through wired headphones
(not included) plugged into the jacks on the RSA.

Auxiliary Devices
The navigation system has an auxiliary input jack
located in the lower right corner of the faceplate.
This is not an audio output; do not plug the
headphone set into the front auxiliary input jack.
You can however, connect an external audio
device such as an iPod, laptop computer, MP3
player, CD changer, or cassette tape player, etc. to
the auxiliary input jack for use as another source
for audio listening.
Drivers are encouraged to set up any auxiliary
device while the vehicle is in PARK (P). See
“Defensive Driving” in the Index of your vehicles
owner manual for more information on driver
distraction.
If your vehicle has rear audio/video input jacks,
located in the rear of the center console, they can
be used as another source for audio/video
listening.
To use a portable audio player, connect a 3.5 mm
(1/8 inch) cable to the auxiliary input jack. When
a device is connected, the system will detect
and automatically begin playing audio from the
device over the vehicle’s speakers.
If a device is connected and you are listening to
another source (FM, CD, MP3, etc.), press
the AUDIO key then press the AUDIO key
repeatedly until AUX is selected or touch the AUX
screen button. An auxiliary device must be
connected for the AUX screen button to appear as

Helpful Hints for Stating Commands
•
When a multiple command is available, choose
the command that best works for you.
• Words that are in brackets are optional. For
example, for the command Radio [band]
[select] FM, stating Radio FM or Radio select
FM are both valid commands.
• When the system recognizes the command
the system will:
− either perform the function
− ask you to confirm your choice by clearly
stating “yes or no”
− issue an error message such as “System
does not recognize this command” or
direct you to “Please start speaking after
the beep”
• If the system is not yet ready, the system
may state “System is checking the disc.
Please wait.”.
• To cancel a command or if the system
response does not match your verbal
command, press and hold the talk symbol
button. The system will reply, “System will
cancel the voice recognition”.
98
• If you experience difficulty with the system
recognizing a command, try saying it more
softly, and wait for a few seconds after the
beep, or you may just try saying it again.
• Background noise may cause voice commands
to be misunderstood, including airflow noise
from wind.
• To use the voice recognition system, the map
DVD must be loaded.
This system is able to recognize commands in
three different languages. The system will
only recognize commands based on the language
selected from the Driver Information Center
(DIC). See “Driver Information Center, DIC Vehicle
Personalization” in the Index of your vehicles
owner manual.
Voice Recognition Commands
The following list shows all of the voice commands
available for the navigation system with a brief
description of each. The commands are listed with
the optional words in brackets. To use the voice
commands, refer to the instructions listed
previously.
Voice Tag Commands
The following are voice tag commands you can
access by clearly stating the commands exactly as
they are written. You may have up to 40 voice
tag entries for destinations.
Navigation go to [destination] (voice tag),
navigation select [destination] (voice tag):
These commands instruct the system to select a
destination saved under the voice tag you have
stored.
If you are not currently driving on a route, the
system will automatically create the voice tag
destination as the final destination. If you are
currently driving on a route, the system will
automatically create the voice tag destination as a
waypoint. Up to three waypoints can be created.
