Missing important
messages?
One change that resulted from Business Objects’ purchase of Firstlogic in April
2006 is that email messages about ACE now come from a businessobjects.com
email address. Please ensure that your email system does not mistakenly filter
these messages to a spam, trash, or quarantine area where you may not have an
opportunity to read them. We don’t want you to miss any important news about
your ACE product.

changes. For details about these changes, see page 6 through page 9.
The USPS added placeholders to the CSL to accommodate future changes.
Certain fields that were previously flagged as optional (such as DPV) are
now present in CSLs for end users and service providers.
As a result of these changes, the CSL has grown to 3000 characters.
ACE handles converting CSLs from the old format (any version from 7.61c or
later) to the new format.
See details about the exact contents of the CSL in the NCOA
Link
User Technical
Reference, which is available on the USPS RIBBS site. Go to
http://ribbs.usps.gov
, click NCOA

on the left, and then scroll to the NCOA
Link
User Technical Reference document on the right.
Statistics fileThe Address Conversion Statistics file contains all the same information that’s in
the CSL, plus additional information (such as licensee name, input database
name, and Mover ID “00” matches). Unlike the CSL, the statistics file contains
information about only the last run. You can name the file whatever you like,
choose its format, and easily find information about your most recently processed
data.
With ACE 7.71c, the Address Conversion Statistics file includes the same
changes made to the CSL.

Cache for ZIP Order Processing option.
Flat file dataThe USPS offers NCOA
ACE could access only the hash files. Now ACE can access either format. By
using flat files, you may improve processing speed and use less memory when
you process your data in ZIP Code order.
ACE automatically detects which file format you’re using, so there is no need to
specify this in the software.
Which format is best? If you’ll cache all data, processing will be faster with
the hash file format. If you’ll use the new Cache for ZIP Order Processing
option (see “Caching improvements” on page 11) to cache just a segment or
two at a time, processing will be faster if you use the flat file format.

temporarily saved in the computer’s RAM until that segment of data has been
processed. Then the next segment is loaded into RAM and the previous segment

your data in ZIP Code order. Turning this option on when processing data
that is not in ZIP Code order will slow performance.
NCOALink processing improvements
11
Best resultsWhen you use the Cache for ZIP Order Processing option, you’ll see the greatest
speed improvements in the following situations:
Your data is concentrated geographically. For example, a 100,000-record file
that contains only Wisconsin addresses is processed much faster than a
100,000-record file that contains addresses for all 50 states.
Your data file is large. The speed improves in proportion to the size of the
data file.
The Cache for ZIP Order Processing option is not an automatic performance
enhancement in every situation. Take some time to analyze how it affects your
processing speeds.
Set up ACE Views or job

To load ZIP-sorted segments into RAM, turn on the Cache for ZIP Order
Processing option in the Memory Usage block or window.

Windows caching improvements
Correctly setting the new Windows caching options may improve processing
speed. This can help you surpass the previous 2 gigabyte (GB) application
memory limitation. This applies only to Windows operating systems.
If you have more than 2GB of memory available for processing, you may want to
consider using these options.
These new Windows caching improvements currently apply only to

system
In order to take advantage of processing improvements, you or your System
Administrator must perform two system-level tasks. Unless you perform these
two tasks first, the new ACE caching options (see “Windows caching options” on
page 14) will be unusable. The two tasks are:
1.Edit the boot.ini file. See “Edit boot.ini” on page 13 for details.
2.Edit permissions so that pages can be locked into memory. See “Edit
permissions” on page 13 for details.
Edit boot.iniThe boot.ini file specifies how to start (or boot) the computer. If you have over
4GB of memory, follow the steps below to use Physical Address Extensions
(PAE) to enable storing more data in memory.
If you have never made changes to boot.ini before, we recommend that you
!
give these instructions to your System Administrator. If you accidentally
delete something, it may seriously and adversely affect your computer.
1.At a command prompt, navigate to the root of the boot directory. For
example, c:\boot.ini (where c is the drive where the file is located).
2.Type attrib -s -h -r boot.ini to remove the system, hidden, and read-only
attributes of the boot.ini file.
3.Open the boot.ini file in a text editor and then type /pae at the end of the
operating system that will process your ACE jobs. For example,
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows
XP Professional" /fastdetect /pae
4.Save and close the boot.ini file.
5.At the command prompt, type attrib +s +h +r boot.ini to restore the system,
hidden, and read-only attributes that protect the boot.ini file.
Edit permissionsFollow these instructions to grant permissions for someone to lock pages in
memory.
1.On the Start menu, click Run. In the Open box, type gpedit.msc.

GeoCensus minor civil division and census county division
Now ACE can output GeoCensus minor civil division (MCD) and census county
division (CCD) data when you perform address-level GeoCensus processing.
DefinitionsThe U.S. Census Bureau defines minor civil divisions and census county
divisions as follows:
A minor civil division (MCD) is the primary governmental or administrative
division of a county or statistically equivalent entity in many states and
statistically equivalent entities. A minor civil division is created to govern or
administer an area rather than a specific population (ex. Town, Township,
District). The U.S. Census Bureau recognizes minor civil divisions in 28
states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas.
A census county division (CCD) is a statistical subdivision of a county,
delineated by the U.S. Census Bureau in cooperation with state and local
government officials for data presentation purposes. A census county
division usually represents one or more communities, trading centers or, in
some instances, major land uses. The Census Bureau has established census
county divisions in states that do not have minor civil divisions suitable for
data presentation.
Minor civil divisions and census county divisions together cover the entire
country and provide a standard level of geography below the county. Minor
civil divisions are more common in the East, while census county divisions
are more common in the West.
