Figure 2. Overview of SE-1 system expander connections
In determining which jacks to use on the SE-1 system expander , use the following guidelines:
Input connections
• Connect the A/V sources – DVD, DSS, etc. – to the five set s of input jacks on the right side of
the SE-1 system expander connection panel.
• Components that use optical cable must connect to Input 1 or 2. If a component has both
optical and coaxial outputs, connect either of them.
• For digital components that do not require an optical digital jack, use the COAXIAL DIGIT AL
AUDIO jack.
• Be sure to connect the left and right analog channels of the component to the proper left or
right jacks.
Note: Even if using digital audio, we recommend that you also connect the L/R analog audio.
• For components that have S-Video, use the S-VIDEO jack.•For components that do not have
S-Video, use the COMPOSITE VIDEO jack.

Output connections
Note: OUTPUT 1 and OUTPUT 2 jacks are linked internally. They are individually buffered, but
always contain the same signal, both COMPOSITE VIDEO and S-VIDEO.
• Connect the COMPOSITE VIDEO and S-VIDEO outputs to the respective inputs on the TV.
Note: The SE-1 system expander does not convert composite input signals to S-Video. There-
fore, you must connect the composite and the S-Video outputs to the TV if you have composite
and S-Video sources. Or, use a composite video to S-Video converter.
Connecting to the MRI or CD20 music center
Using the music center serial cable:
1. Insert the mini-DIN connector into the jack marked MUSIC CENTER on the SE-1 system
expander .
2. Insert the 3.5 mm connector into the SERIAL DATA jack on the back of the CD20 music center
or MRI. This connection delivers the remote command signals for audio source control.
Connecting to the TA-1 amplifier
®
1. Using the Bose
source cable:
• Insert one connector into the AMP output jack on the SE-1 system expander.
• Insert the other connector into the Bose source plate. This cable carries the audio/video source
signals from the SE-1 system expander to the source plate. Use Bose system cable to
connect the back of the Bose source plate to the TA-1 amplifier.
2. Using the digital audio patch cable:
• Insert one connector into the COAX DIGIT AL AUDIO output jack on the SE-1 system expander.
• Insert the other end into RCA jack #1 on the Bose digital source plate. Use Cat-5 cable from the
back of the digital source plate to send the digital audio signal to the TA-1 amplifier.
Connecting the IR sensor
• Insert the connector end into the IR SENSE jack of the SE-1 system expander .
• Decide where to place the IR sensor on or near the TV. Remove the protective strip from its
adhesive surface and affix the sensor to a flat, dry surface. The sensor carries IR signals
issued by the remote control to the SE-1 system expander, which conveys them to the TA-1
amplifier and the CD20 music center or MRI.
Connecting the power supply
1. Insert the small connector end of the power pack cable into the 12VDC power jack on the
SE-1 system expander.
2. Plug the power pack into a nearby wall outlet. The LED on the lower right corner of the SE-1
system expander should light when the power pack is connected to power.

Connecting the SE-1 system expander (continued)
AUX mode
In this recommended mode of operation, for use only with the CD50, the SE-1 system expander
updates the Personal® music center (PMC) display of output levels, including volume, to stay in
sync with the TA-1 amplifier levels. So any system control adjustment, made at either the PMC
or the IR remote control, affects both the PMC and the amplifier.
When the system is not in AUX mode, eventually the PMC and TA-1 settings no longer match.
For example, using the PMC to select and control the CD player causes the volume and other
levels to automatically resume previous settings that are likely to conflict with the TA-1 ampli-fier
settings. Using the AUX mode prevent s this out-of-sync situation.
There is one limitation to this mode, however. It does not allow the AUX source on the multi-room
interface (MRI) to serve as audio source for the home theater room. Instead, you must use the
AUX source on the PMC for home theater.
Whenever the AUX source is selected, both the SE-1 system exp ander and the TA-1 amplifier
recognize it as a T A-1 video input, while the audio (routed through the MRI to the TA-1 amplifier)
is ignored. So when you press AUX on the PMC or AUX on the IR remote, the TA-1 amplifier will
switch, as needed, to its VIDEO AUDIO input (and the last digital input selected).
In fact, with any source change (setting the SE-1 to video input 2, for example), the SE-1 system
expander automatically changes the CD50 source to AUX, even if the CD50 had been off.
Setting the SE-1 to AUX mode
To set the SE-1 system expander to AUX mode, move the AUX DIP switch to the up position
(towards the volume button).
Note: Also set the TA-1 to AUX mode. To do that, move the EXT DIP switch to the down position (towards the wall).
Operation notes:
• The first time you use the system in AUX mode, you must adjust the PMC’ s volume level to put
it in sync with the TA-1 volume level. T o do this, use the PMC to:
1.Select any source.
2.Lower its volume to 0.
3.Raise the volume to the preferred level. This will synchronize the PMC volume to the TA-1
volume.
• Each time the SE-1 system expander source changes (Video 1 – 5) it causes the CD50 to
select the AUX source. While the audio plugged into the AUX input on the MRI will not play (effectively eliminating an analog input to the home theater room), you have three other inputs. Instead
of receiving audio from the MRI, the T A-1 amplifier automatically select s VIDEO AUDIO and the
last digital input.
• The AUX input is available for use in other rooms in the home. The AUX source becomes the
Home Theater mode only in the home theater room.
• When you switch from any audio source (CD, FM, Video 1, etc.) to AUX on the PMC, the TA-1
amplifier switches from MUSIC AUDIO input to VIDEO AUDIO input. Switching back to an audio
source switches the input back.
