What is Bluetooth?
34
Bluetooth technology was introduced in 1999.
Engineer's used the code
name "Bluetooth" in honour of
the tenth-century Viking king
Bluetooth, who is credited with
unifying Denmark, and bringing
order into chaos.
Unity is what Bluetooth promises, interconnecting different
devices in wireless communications.
Bluetooth is an open standard
for local radio communications,
enabling Bluetooth-compati-
The advantage of Bluetooth is
that it dispenses with the need
for a direct line of sight.
Typically, the range for Bluetooth communication is about
10 metres.
Bluetooth therefore provides
voice and data communication
over the unlicensed 2.4 GHz
frequency band
(2.4 GHz — 2.483 GHz), which
is available worldwide.
ble devices to interconnect
without cabling over short
distances.

bling two Bluetooth devices
to communicate for the first
time.
Any two Bluetooth devices
have to be "introduced" to each
other before they can communicate.
This applies to communication
between two helmets equipped
with the BMW WCS-1 communication system, and between
a helmet with the BMW WCS-1
communication system and
some other Bluetooth device.
In the case of the BMW WCS-1

communication system, pairing
takes place in setup mode, in
other words after the device is
switched on.
