• USE RIGHT APPLIANCE - Do not use appliance for any job except that for which it is intended.
AWARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock use only with an extension cord intended for outdoor
• EXTENSION CORD. Make sure your extension cord is in good condition. When using an extension cord be
sure it is heavy enough to carry the current your product will draw. An undersized e^dension cord will cause
a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating. The following table shows the correct size
to use depending on cord len^ and nameplate ampere rating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gage. The
smaller the gage number, the heavier the cord. Black & Decker has extension cords available for use with
outdoor appliances.

or replaced by an authorized service center unless otherwise indicated elsewhere in this manual.
SAFETY WARNINGS: DOUBLE INSULATION
Double insulated tools are constructed throughout with two separate layers of electrical insulation or one
double thickness of insulation between you and the tool's electrical system. Tools built with this insulation
system are not intended to be grounded. As a result, your tool is equipped with a two prong plug which
permits you to use extension cords without concern for maintoining a ground connection.
NOTE; Double insulation does not take the place of normal safety precautions when operating this tool. The
insulation system is for added protection against injury resulting from a possible electrical insulation failure
within the tool.
REPLACEMENT PARTS: When servicing all tools, USE IDENTICAL REPLACEMENT PARTS. Repair or replace
damaged cords.
SAFETY WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS: POLARIZED PLUGS
To reduce the risk of electric shock, this equipment has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other).
This equipment must be used with a suitable polarized 2 wire or 3 wire extension cord. Polarized connections
will fit together only one way. Make sure that the receptacle end of the extension cord has large and small
blade slot widths. If the plug does not fit fully into the extension cord, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit,
obtain a suitable extension cord. If the extension cord does not fit fully into the outlet, contact a qualified
electrician to install the proper outlet. Do not change the tool plug or extension cord in any way.

INSTAlilNG THE BAIL HANDLE (HT400 AND HT500 ONLY)
Ж WARNING: Do not use hedge trimmer without boil handle.
NOTE: The HT200 and HT300 trimmers hove built-in auxiliary handles and the HS1000 has a pre-installed
bail handle.
Before using your trimmer, you must install the bail handle as follows:
1. TURN OFF POWER AND UNPLUG TRIMMER.
2. Install the bail handle to the trimmer housing from the bottom, as shown in Figure 1.
3. With the arrow pointing forward, as shown in Figure 1, install the two phillips head screws from the
plastic bag through the bail handle and into the trimmer housing. Tighten securely.
Ж WARNING: Always hold the bail or auxiliary handle with one hand when trimming.
ATTACHING EXTENSION CORD TO TRIMMER
An extension cord retainer is built into the switch handle that prevents the extension cord from pulling out of
the handle. To use the retainer, simply double the extension cord as shown in Figure 4, about a foot from the
female end, and insert the cord as for as it will go. The automatic mechanism inside the handle ensures that
the cord will be securely held. Plug the female end of the extension cord onto the plug in the end of the switch
handle. To remove the cord, simply depress the retainer latch and pull the cord out.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
SWITCH
To turn the tool "ON", squeeze the trigger while sliding the actuator, shown in Figures 2 & 3, to the rear.
When the actuator reaches position 2, shown in Figure 3, the trigger will depress fully and the tool will start to
run. The actuator can be released at this time, but in order to keep the tool running, you must continue to
squeeze the trigger. To turn the tool "OFF", simply release the trigger. The actuator will lock the tool "OFF"
automatically.
The tool can be locked in the "ON" position by squeezing the trigger and sliding the actuator back as
described above, but when the tool starts, continue squeezing the trigger and sliding the actuator bock until it
reaches position 3 shown in Figure 3. At this point the tool is locked "ON" and both the actuator and trigger
may be released while the tool continues to run. To turn the tool off from a locked "ON" position, squeeze and
release the trigger. The actuotor locks the tool "OFF" automatically.
TRIMMING INSTRUCDONS
1. EXTENSION CORD. (Figure 5) Always keep extension cord behind trimmer and away from the trimming
operation. Never drape it over a hedge being trimmed. If you cut or damage the cord, unplug it at the
electrical outlet immediately, before inspecting or repoiring cord.
2. WORKING POSITION. Maintain proper footing and balance and do not overreach. Wear safely goggles,
non-skid footwear and rubber gloves when trimming. Hold the tool firmly in both hands and turn the tool
ON. Always hold the trimmer, as shown in the illustrations above, with one hand on the switch handle and
one hand on the auxiliary or bail handle. Never hold the tool by the blade guard.
3. TRIMAAING NEW GROWTH. (Figure 6) A wide, sweeping motion, feeding the blade teeth through the
twigs is most effective. A slight downward tilt of the blade, in the direction of motion gives the best cutting.
Ж CAUTION: (HT200, HT300, HT400, HT500TRIAAMERS). Do not cut stems greater than 3/8" (10mm). Use
these trimmers only for cutting normal shrubbery around houses and buildings.
Ж CAUTION: (HS1000 & HS1022 TRIMMERS). Do not use trimmer for cutting stems 3/4" (19mm) or
greater. Use this trimmer only for cutting normal shrubbery around houses and buildings.
4. LEVEL HEDGES. (Figure 7) To obtain exceptionally level hedges
a piece of string con be stretched along the length of the hedge as a guide.
5. SIDE-TRIAAMING HEDGES. (Figure 8) Hold the trimmer as shown and begin at the bottom and sweep up.
