GENERAL POWER TOOL SAFETY RULES
WARNING: Read all safety
warnings and all instructions. Failure to
follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.
SAVE ALL WARNINGS AND
INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE
REFERENCE
The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.
1) WORK AREA SAFETY a) Keep work area clean and well lit.
Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
b) Do not operate power tools in
explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which
may ignite the dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders
away while operating a power tool.
Distractions can cause you to lose control.
2) ELECTRICAL SAFETY a) Power tool plugs must match the
outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and
matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
b) Avoid body contact with earthed or
grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators.
There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain
or wet conditions. Water entering
a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use
the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or
entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a
cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
f) If operating a power tool in a damp
location is unavoidable, use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protected supply. Use of a
GFCI reduces the risk of electric shock.
3) PERSONAL SAFETY a) Stay alert, watch what you are
doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A
moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
b) Use personal protective equipment.
Always wear eye protection. Protective
equipment such as dust mask, nonskid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c) Prevent unintentional starting.
Ensure the switch is in the off position before connecting to power source and/ or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying
power tools with your finger on the switch or energizing power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench
before turning the power tool on. A
wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
e) Do not overreach. Keep proper
footing and balance at all times. This
enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose
clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry or
long hair can be caught in moving parts.
2
g) If devices are provided for the
connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used.
Use of dust collection can reduce dustrelated hazards.
4) POWER TOOL USE AND CARE Do not force the power tool. Use
a)
the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will
do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the
switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot
be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power
source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive
safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
d) Store idle power tools out of
the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power
tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools. Check for
misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the
power tool’s operation. If damaged,
have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by
poorly maintained power tools.
f) Use the power tool, accessories
and tool bits, etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed.
Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
5) SERVICE
a)
Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will
ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

use appliances in damp or wet locations.
• Don’t Use In Rain.
• Keep Children Away – All visitors should
be kept at a distance from work area.
• Dress Properly – Do not wear loose
clothing or jewelry. They can be caught in
moving parts. Use of rubber gloves and substantial footwear is recommended when working outdoors. Wear protective hair covering to contain long hair.
• Use Safety Glasses – Always use face
or dust mask if operation is dusty.
• Use Right Appliance – Do not use
appliance for any job except that for which it is intended.
• Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)
protection should be provided on the circuit(s) or outlet(s) to be used for the gardening appliance. Receptacles are available having built-in GFCI protection and may be used for this measure of safety.
WARNING:
electric shock, use only with an extension cord intended for outdoor use, such as an extension cord of cord type SW-A, SOW-A, STW-A, STOW-A, SJW-A, SJOW-A, SJTW-A. or SJTOW-A.
• Extension Cord – Make sure your
extension cord is in good condition. When using an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current your product will draw. An undersized extension cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating. Table 59.1, shows the correct size to use depending on cord length and nameplate ampere rating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gage. The smaller the gage number, the heavier the cord. To reduce the risk of disconnection of appliance cord from the extension cord during operating:
i) Make a knot as shown in Figure A; or ii) Use one of the plug-receptacle
retaining straps or connectors described in this manual.
To reduce the risk of
A
• Avoid Unintentional Starting – Don’t
carry plugged-in appliance with finger on switch. Be sure switch is off when plugging in.
• Don’t Abuse Cord – Never carry appliance by cord or yank it to disconnect from receptacle. Keep cord from heat, oil, and sharp edges.
• Don’t Force Appliance – It will do the job better and with less likelihood of a risk of injury at the rate for which it was designed.
• Don’t Overreach – Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
• Stay Alert – Watch what you are doing.
3
Use common sense. Do not operate appliance when you are tired.
• Disconnect Appliance – Disconnect
the appliance from the power supply when not in use, before servicing, when changing accessories such as blades, and the like.
• Store Idle Appliances Indoors – When
not in use, appliances should be stored indoors in dry, and high or locked-up place – out of reach of children.
• Maintain Appliance With Care
Keep cutting edge sharp and clean for best performance and to reduce the risk of injury. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories. Inspect appliance cord periodically, and if damaged, have it repaired by an authorized service facility. Inspect extension cords periodically and replace if damaged. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease.
• Check Damaged Parts – Before further
use of the appliance, a guard or other part that is damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function. Check for alignment of moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting, and any other condition that may affect its operation. A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced by an authorized service center unless indicated elsewhere in this manual.
• Replacement Parts – When servicing
use only identical replacement parts.
• Polarized Appliance Connections
To reduce the risk of electric shock, this appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other) and will require the use of a polarized extension cord. The appliance plug will fit into a polarized extension cord only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the extension cord, reverse the plug. If the plug still does not fit, obtain a correct polarized extension cord. A polarized extension cord will require the use of a polarized wall outlet. This plug will fit into the polarized wall outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the wall outlet, reverse the plug. If the plug still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper wall outlet. Do not change the equipment plug, extension cord receptacle, or extension cord plug in any way.
• Keep hands away from blades.
