Intended use

Your Black & Decker sander has been designed for sanding
wood, metal, plastics and painted surfaces. This tool is
intended for consumer use only.

Safety instructions

General power tool safety warnings

Warning! Read all safety warnings and all

instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and

instructions listed below may result in electric

shock, fire and/or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.

The term "power tool" in all of the warnings listed below
refers to your mains operated (corded) power tool or battery
operated (cordless) power tool.

1. Work area safety

a. Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark

areas invite accidents.

b. Do not operate power tools in explosive

atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable

liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which
may ignite the dust or fumes.

c. Keep children and bystanders away while operating

a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

2. Electrical safety

a. Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never

modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter
plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools.

Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of

electric shock.

b. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded

surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and
refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric

shock if your body is earthed or grounded.

c. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.

Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of
electric shock.

d. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for

carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep
cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving
parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of

electric shock.

e. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an

extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord

suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.

f. If operating a power tool in a damp location is

unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD)
protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of

electric shock.

3. Personal safety

a. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use

common sense when operating a power tool. Do not
use a power tool while you are tired or under the

influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment
of inattention while operating power tools may result in

serious personal injury.

b. Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye

protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask,

non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection
used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal

injuries.

c. Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in

the off-position before connecting to power source
and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool.

Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or

energising power tools that have the switch on invites
accidents.

d. Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning

the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a

rotating part of the power tool may result in personal

injury.

e. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at

all times. This enables better control of the power tool in

unexpected situations.

f. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or

jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away
from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair

can be caught in moving parts.

g. If devices are provided for the connection of dust

extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are
connected and properly used. Use of dust collection

can reduce dust-related hazards.

4. Power tool use and care

a. Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power

tool for your application. The correct power tool will do

the job better and safer at the rate for which it was
designed.

b. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn

it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled

with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.

c. Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or

the battery pack from the power tool before making
any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing
power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce

the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.

d. Store idle power tools out of the reach of children

and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power
tool or these instructions to operate the power tool.

Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained
users.

e. Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or

binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any
other condition that may affect the power tools
operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired
before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly

maintained power tools.

f. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly

maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are
less likely to bind and are easier to control.

g. Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc., in

accordance with these instructions, taking into
account the working conditions and the work to be
performed. Use of the power tool for operations different

from those intended could result in a hazardous
situation.

5. Service

a. Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair

person using only identical replacement parts. This
will ensure that the safety of the power tool is
maintained.

Additional power tool safety warnings

Warning! Additional safety warnings for sanders

• Hold power tool by insulated gripping surfaces,

because the belt may contact its own cord. Cutting a
"live" wire may make exposed metal parts of the power
tool "live" and shock the operator.

• Use clamps or another practical way to secure and

support the workpiece to a stable platform. Holding
the work by hand or against your body leaves it unstable
and may lead to loss of control.

Warning! Contact with or inhalation of dusts arising from
sanding applications may endanger the health of the operator

and possible bystanders. Wear a dust mask specifically

designed for protection against dust and fumes and ensure
that persons within or entering the work area are also
protected.

• Thoroughly remove all dust after sanding.

• Take special care when sanding paint which is possibly

lead based or when sanding some woods and metal
which may produce toxic dust:

- Do not let children or pregnant women enter the work
area.

- Do not eat, drink or smoke in the work area.

- Dispose of dust particles and any other debris safely.

• This tool is not intended for use by persons (including

children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental
capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless
they have been given supervision or instruction
concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible
for their safety. Children should be supervised to ensure
that they do not play with the appliance.

• The intended use is described in this instruction manual.

The use of any accessory or attachment or performance
of any operation with this tool other than those
recommended in this instruction manual may present a
risk of personal injury and/or damage to property.

Electrical safety

This tool is double insulated; therefore no earth
wire is required. Always check that the power

supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate.

• If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the

manufacturer or an authorised Black & Decker Service
Centre in order to avoid a hazard.

Features

This tool includes some or all of the following features.

• To remove the dustbag, pull it off the dust extraction

outlet.

Connecting a vacuum cleaner (fig. C)

• Insert the adaptor (5) into the dust extraction outlet (2).

• Connect the hose (6) of the vacuum cleaner to the

adaptor.

Use

Warning! Let the tool work at its own pace. Do not overload.

Switching on and off

• To switch the tool on, set the on/off switch (1) to
position I.

• To switch the tool off, set the on/off switch to position O.

Emptying the dustbag

The dustbag should be emptied every 10 minutes.

• Shake the dustbag to empty the contents.

Assembly

Warning! Before assembly, make sure that the tool is

switched off and unplugged.

Fitting sanding sheets (fig. A)

Warning! Never use the tool without a sanding sheet or
accessory in place.

• Press the sheet firmly and evenly onto the sanding disc

(3), making sure that the holes in the sheet line up with
the holes in the base.

Fitting and removing the dustbag (fig. B)

• Fit the dustbag (4) into the dust extraction outlet (2).

Hints for optimum use (fig. D - G)

• Do not exert too much pressure on the tool.

• Regularly check the condition of the sanding sheet.
Replace when necessary.

• Always sand with the grain of the wood.

• When sanding new layers of paint before applying
another layer, use extra fine grit.

• On very uneven surfaces, or when removing layers of

paint, start with a coarse grit. On other surfaces, start with

a medium grit. In both cases, gradually change to a fine
grit for a smooth finish.

The performance of your tool depends on the accessory

used. Black & Decker and Piranha accessories are

Maintenance

Your tool has been designed to operate over a long period of
time with a minimum of maintenance. Continuous

satisfactory operation depends upon proper tool care and

regular cleaning.

Warning! Before performing any maintenance, switch off
and unplug the tool.

• Regularly clean the ventilation slots in your tool using a

soft brush or dry cloth.

• Regularly clean the motor housing using a damp cloth.
Do not use any abrasive or solvent-based cleaner.

Mains plug replacement (U.K. & Ireland only)

If a new mains plug needs to be fitted:

• Safely dispose of the old plug.

• Connect the brown lead to the live terminal in the new
plug.

Protecting the environment

Separate collection. This product must not be
disposed of with normal household waste.

Should you find one day that your Black & Decker product

needs replacement, or if it is of no further use to you, do not

dispose of it with household waste. Make this product

available for separate collection.

Separate collection of used products and

packaging allows materials to be recycled and used
again. Reuse of recycled materials helps prevent

environmental pollution and reduces the demand for raw
materials.

Local regulations may provide for separate collection of

electrical products from the household, at municipal waste
sites or by the retailer when you purchase a new product.

recycling of Black & Decker products once they have

Instructions de sécurité

électriques

Attention ! Prenez connaissance de tous les

instructions. Le non-respect des

La notion d'« outil électroportatif » mentionnée par la suite

1. Sécurité de la zone de travail
a. Maintenez la zone de travail propre et bien éclairée.

Un lieu de travail en désordre ou mal éclairé augmente
le risque d'accidents.

b. N'utilisez pas les outils électroportatifs dans un

environnement présentant des risques d'explosion
ni en présence de liquides, gaz ou poussières

2. Sécurité électrique

3. Sécurité personnelle

cheveux longs peuvent être attrapés dans les pièces en

mouvement.

g. Si des dispositifs servant à aspirer ou à recueillir les

poussières doivent être utilisés, vérifiez qu'ils sont

correctement raccordés et utilisés. Le fait d'aspirer la

poussière permet de réduire les risques inhérents à la

poussière.

4. Utilisation des outils électroportatifs et précautions

a. Ne surchargez pas l'outil. Utilisez l'outil

électroportatif approprié pour le travail à effectuer.

Avec l'outil électroportatif approprié, vous travaillerez
mieux et avec plus de sécurité à la vitesse pour laquelle
il a été conçu.

b. N'utilisez pas un outil électroportatif dont

l'interrupteur est défectueux. Un outil électroportatif

qui ne peut plus être mis en ou hors fonctionnement est
dangereux et doit être réparé.

c. Déconnectez la prise de la source d'alimentation ou

le pack-batterie de l'outil électrique avant tout
réglage, changement d'accessoire voire rangement
des outils électriques. Cette mesure de précaution

empêche une mise en marche par mégarde.

d. Rangez les outils électroportatifs hors de portée des

enfants. Ne laissez pas les personnes n'étant pas
familiarisées avec l'outil ou n'ayant pas lu ces
instructions l'utiliser. Les outils électroportatifs sont

dangereux lorsqu'ils sont utilisés par des personnes non
initiées.

e. Prenez soin des outils électroportatifs. Vérifiez que

les parties en mouvement fonctionnent correctement

5. Réparations

personnes à proximité. Portez un masque contre la poussière
spécialement conçu pour vous protéger des sciures et des
fumées toxiques. Veillez également à ce que les personnes
se trouvant à l'intérieur de la zone de travail ou y pénétrant
soient également protégées.

• Enlevez soigneusement toute poussière après le

ponçage.

• Faites spécialement attention lorsque vous poncez de la

peinture pouvant être à base de plomb ou lorsque vous
poncez des bois et des métaux pouvant produire de la
poussière toxique.

- Ne laissez pas les enfants ou les femmes enceintes
entrer dans la zone de travail.

- Ne mangez pas, ne buvez pas et ne fumez pas dans
la zone de travail.

- Nettoyez l'outil de toutes particules de poussière
etautre débris.

• Cet outil n'est pas destiné à être utilisé par des

personnes (notamment des enfants) présentant des
capacités physiques, sensorielles ou mentales limitées
voire dépourvues de connaissance et d'expérience, sauf
si elles sont supervisées ou ont reçu des instructions pour
l'usage de l'appareil par une personne responsable de
leur sécurité. Les enfants ne doivent pas jouer avec
l’appareil.

• Le domaine d'utilisation de l'outil est décrit dans le

présent manuel. L’utilisation d’accessoires ou la
réalisation d’opérations avec cet outil autres que ceux

recommandés dans le présent manuel peut entraîner un

risque de blessure ou de dégâts.

Sécurité électrique

L'outil est doublement isolé ; par conséquent, aucun

câble de masse n'est nécessaire. Vérifiez si le
voltage mentionné sur la plaque signalétique de la machine
correspond bien à la tension de secteur présente sur lieu.

• Si le câble d'alimentation est endommagé, il doit être

remplacé par le fabricant ou par un centre de réparation
agréé Black & Decker afin d'éviter tout accident.

Assemblage

Branchement de l’aspirateur (fig. C)

• Insérez l'adaptateur (5) dans l'orifice d'aspiration de la
poussière (2).

• Branchez le tuyau (6) de l'aspirateur à l'adaptateur.

Utilisation

Attention ! Laissez l'outil fonctionner à sa propre vitesse. Ne

le surchargez pas.

Démarrage et arrêt

• Pour démarrer l'outil, mettez l'interrupteur marche/arrêt
(1) sur la position I.

• Pour éteindre l'outil, mettez l'interrupteur marche/arrêt sur
la position O.

Comment vider le sac à poussière

Le sac à poussière doit être vidé toutes les 10 minutes.

• Secouez le sac à poussière pour le vider.

Attention ! Avant l'assemblage, assurez-vous que l'outil est
éteint et débranché.

Montage du papier abrasif (fig. A)

Attention ! N'utilisez jamais l'outil sans feuille de ponçage
ou accessoire en place.

• Appuyez fermement sur la feuille et de façon égale sur
le disque de ponçage (3), en veillant à ce que les trous
de la feuille coïncident avec les trous de la base.

Montage et démontage du sac à poussières (fig. B)

• Montez le sac à poussière (4) dans l'orifice d'aspiration
de la poussière (2).

• Pour retirer le sac à poussière, sortez-le de l’orifice
d’aspiration de poussière.

• N'exercez pas trop de pression sur l'outil.

• Vérifiez régulièrement l'état de la feuille de ponçage.
Remplacez-la lorsque cela est nécessaire.

• Poncez toujours avec le grain correspondant au bois.

• Lorsque vous poncez de nouvelles couches de peinture
avant d'en appliquer une autre, utilisez un abrasif extra
fin.

• Pour les surfaces irrégulières ou lorsque vous enlevez
des couches de peinture, commencez par un abrasif à
gros grains. Sur d'autres surfaces, commencez avec un
abrasif moyen. Dans les deux cas, changez
graduellement et passez à un abrasif fin pour une finition
douce.

Accessoires

Les performances de votre outil dépendent de
l'accessoireque vous utilisez. Les accessoires Black &
Decker et Piranha sont conçus selon les normes de haute
qualité pour améliorer les performances de votre outil. En
utilisant ces accessoires, vous obtiendrez les meilleurs
résultats de votre outil.

Entretien

Votre outil a été conçu pour fonctionner pendant longtemps
avec un minimum d'entretien. Un fonctionnement continu
satisfaisant dépend d'un nettoyage régulier et d'un entretien
approprié de l'outil.

Attention ! Avant d'effectuer tout entretien, éteignez et
débranchez l'outil.

• Nettoyez régulièrement les orifices de ventilation de
votre outil à l'aide d'une brosse douce ou d'un chiffon
sec.

• Nettoyez régulièrement le compartiment du moteur à
l'aide d'un chiffon humide. N'utilisez pas de produit
abrasif ou à base de solvant.

Remplacement des prises secteur

Si une nouvelle prise secteur doit être installée :

• Mettez au rebut la vieille prise.

• Branchez le fil brun dans la borne de la nouvelle prise.

• Branchez le fil bleu à la borne neutre.

Attention ! Aucune connexion ne doit être faite à la borne de
terre. Suivez les instructions de montage fournies avec les
prises de bonne qualité. Fusibles recommandés : 5 A.
