1. INTRODUCTION BASIC INFORMATION
Biomag® Lumina
It is a system with an integrated adapter and up to four independently
attachable applicators. This top quality device is a portable magneto
therapeutic system, the features of which are based on the older system

Purpose and specifi cations for use
The Biomag® Lumina system (magneto therapeutic device Biomag® Lumina
and connectable applicators) is designed for application on all parts of the
body for all age groups (from 3 years of age) to improve regeneration of the
body, soothe pain, stimulate metabolism, enhance the immune system and
maintain good health. It is designed for use in many medical areas (see
the application section – on page 14) and very often it is an essential
part of a complex rehabilitation process. Operation of the Biomag
mina device is described on pages 10–11. Frequency of applications of

familiar with the user manual, method of operation and handling with the
device, and are aware of contraindications. The Biomag
may only be used by trained persons. The system may not be handled by
children or other unauthorised or untrained persons!

Lumina system has two modes: the CLINIC mode which is
designed for healthcare providers and experienced users, and the EASY
mode which allows the system’s use not only by healthcare providers,
but also in home care.

The Biomag® brand is the oldest and most frequently used brand of the
pulse magnetic therapy systems produced currently in our country. Due
to its versatility, easy operation, portability and complete accessories,

Lumina system is capable of satisfying virtually all requirements for applications using a pulse magnetic fi eld.
The effectiveness of the applications is individual; on average, independent sources report up to seventy-fi ve percent effi ciency if the system is
used properly. In comparison with other types of physical therapy, this is

When setting parameters for program No. 32 (INDIVIDUAL) follow the
table listing the effects of pulse magnetic therapy.

During application, special attention should be paid to
patients with hypotension (or with a tendency towards
it) and hypertension.
During the fi rst application steps, blood pressure may
decrease and lead to potential negative reactions.
If discomfort is experienced, it is recommended, as a
precaution, to discontinue the application.

Cellulite
Cellulite starts at an early age, especially in overweight people, in certain
vulnerable areas of the body, in connection with malfunction of the vascular and lymph skin circulation and insuffi cient removal of metabolites and
toxic substances from these areas. This results in changes in the ligament
and subcutaneous adipose tissue which are enlarged, hypertrophic and
stiff, which leads to unsightly, “orange peel” skin.
The healing method is derived from the cause of the disease. The aim is to
improve the vascular and lymph circulation, improve the supply of oxygenated blood, enhance metabolite and toxic substance removal, and reduce
excessive subcutaneous adipose tissue.
Purpose of the applications >

This quick start is intended for easy orientation. Use it only after you have been provided with professional training and have
studied the complete User Manual. Always follow the safe operation rules (page 4) and the contraindications (page 5).
For the magnetic therapy application, at least one applicator must be connected to the device. You are recommended to
use two applicators at a time (the fi rst to the causative area of the problems and the latter to the affected part of the body).
The system can run in the EASY or CLINIC modes. Before starting the program, double click the round

3. APPLICATION
The following text describes the basic effects of the low-frequency pulse
magnetic fi eld (LPMF).
Based on the application purposes specifi ed on page 3, the Biomag
Lumina system is used to apply pulse magnetic fi elds.
®
Biomag
and an excellent aid in treating health problems providing that the instructions for use are observed and contraindications respected. It is also very
suitable as part of preventive care.
The application is recommended especially for the musculoskeletal system diseases, vascular system disorders and a wide range of degenerative diseases.
Professional literature provides more detailed information on possibilities
and methods of applications. Recommended Czech literature is listed on
page 30.
Lumina is a very benefi cial part of treatment and rehabilitation
Scope of use and concept of biological effects
Magnetic therapy is based on the infl uence of an artifi cial magnetic fi eld
of certain parameters on the human body. It is a physical therapy which
generates large-area pulse magnetic fi eld of low frequency. Pulse magnetic fi eld acts on the cell membrane permeability, i.e. it improves and accelerates metabolism. Blood circulation and oxygen supply is signifi cantly
better in the part of the body to which the pulse magnetic fi eld is applied.
Increased metabolic turnover and improved supply of exposed tissues with
oxygenated blood and nutrients provide optimal conditions for healing and
regeneration. It is important that the magnetic fi eld passes through the entire body and therefore affects each cell.
Areas of possible use
sensations moving from the pain source via the spinal cord to the brain
centres, and as a result of this and some other mechanisms (enhanced
endorphin production, suppression of infl ammation and swelling, myo-
®
relaxation), it leads to pain relief. Increased production of endorphins
and control of calcium ion transfer across the cell membrane also helps
achieve vasodilation, and analgesic and calming effects. After application of LPMF, increased activity of lactate dehydrogenase (required for
removal of lactic acid which stimulates nerve receptors and causes pain)
has been demonstrated in exposed muscles. Especially good pain-relieving results with the Biomag
and pseudoradicular syndromes (sciatica, compression of nerves for various reasons). The analgesic effect is the basic effect, for which magnetic
therapy is used in most people. It can be widely used in a whole range of
degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system, post-traumatic and
postoperative conditions.
Myo-relaxing effect (relief from spasms) – relaxing skeletal muscles.
Low-frequency pulse therapy is used to remove acid metabolites faster
(due to enhanced perfusion and improved activity of lactate-dehydrogenase), which results in relief from painful irritation in muscles and in
the sites of chronic infl ammation. This reduces pain and relieves painful
muscle spasms (contractions). Magnetic therapy has also demonstrated
signifi cant deceleration of nerve conduction in the lower extremities of
athletes – this effect also contributes to myo-relaxation (muscle relaxation). The myo-relaxing effect of the Biomag
(para-vertebral striated musculature around the spinal column) brings
relief from many problems, e.g. stiff cervical spine, headache, dizziness,
impaired hearing, limited mobility, pain that spreads from the spine to the
extremities, etc.
The myo-relaxing effect on the muscles brings relief during colic and relaxation of the skeletal muscles is necessary in the treatment of any painful
conditions of the musculoskeletal system.

Therapeutic effects of LPMF
Biological changes in the tissues resulting from the effects of low-frequency pulse magnetic fi eld can be benefi cially used in a number of
health problems. The effects can be summarised in six treatment groups
and effects:

• Anti-swelling (anti-oedema)
• Vasodilating (widening the bloodstream)
• Detoxifi cation (eliminating harmful substances) and accelerating
metabolism
• Healing and regenerative, anti-infl ammatory, anti-rheumatic
Frequencies inducing preferably the therapeutic effects are described
and provided graphically in the table on page 16.
Pain-relieving (analgesic) effect – due to magnetic induction, the LPMF
stimulates generation of current in nerve fi bres, which blocks painful
Anti-oedema (anti-swelling) effect – of accelerated metabolism after
the LPMF application enables faster re-absorption of swelling and provides signifi cant anti-infl ammatory and analgesic effects in the affected
area. Position the Biomag
(e.g. in the case of an ankle sprain) and repeatedly perform 30-minute to
45-minute stimulations three times daily to achieve signifi cant relief from
swelling and pain. Anti-swelling and anti-infl ammatory effects can also be
used successfully for upper respiratory tract infections, sinusitis, infl ammation of the gums, in allergic rhinitis, etc.
Vasodilating effect (improved blood circulation) – LPMF affects the
polarization of red blood cells by positive charge. It acts against the stacking (coin-roll formation) of red blood cells as it causes their re-dispersion, thereby increasing the surface area capable of binding and carrying
oxygen. Blood which has passed through a magnetic fi eld has a higher
ability to bind oxygen (it is easier to oxidise). Polarisation of red blood
cells improves the muscle tone of blood vessels, arteries and capillaries – causing their dilation (vasodilation) and enhancing the supply of
oxygenated blood and nutrients to the tissues and faster removal of toxic
substances out of the cells. The partial oxygen pressure is signifi cantly increased. The LPMF acts positively on erythrocyte plasticity. More fl exible
blood cells can better adapt to "obstacles" in the vasculature. LPMF also
reduces the risk of blood clots (thrombi). Low-frequency pulse magnetic
therapy activates the parasympathetic nervous system and promotes the

effl ux of Ca2+ ions, which leads to relaxation of the blood vessel muscles
(particularly pre-capillary sphincters) and to subsequent vasodilation. All
this contributes to harmonisation of the heartbeat, circulation and blood
pressure. LPMF has proven successful, mainly in mild forms of ischaemic
heart disease, but also in lower and upper limb ischaemia, non-healing
lower leg ulcers, and in all perfusion disorders. No recanalisation of already obstructed vessels occurs, but the collateral circulation in the skin
and muscle tissues is greatly dilated.
Vasodilation is desired in any vascular system disorders where the oxygenated blood fl ow is impaired, i.e. in ischaemic disorders of the extremities, heart or brain, all cases where a better supply of oxygen helps healing
and improving the function of the tissues and organs and also provides
anti-infl ammatory effects.
Detoxifying effects (purifying) – stimulation of metabolism. LPMF (lowfrequency pulse magnetic fi eld) passes evenly through the exposed tissues, i.e. through every cell, inducing weak electrical currents there. This
leads to changes in the surface potentials of the cells, changes in cellular
membrane permeability, increased blood circulation, improved oxygenation, nutrient supply and better removal of metabolic waste from the exposed tissues, which are the basic requirements for any healing process.
Enhanced metabolism, removal of waste products and detoxifi cation initiate any healing and regenerative process. For example, exposition of the
liver using the Biomag
and enhances detoxifi cation processes in the whole body. Local effects
are achieved by placing the applicator on the affected area – e.g. muscle,
joint, spine, etc. By using a small applicator, we can achieve stronger local
effects due to a higher induction, while the use of the applicator with a
larger application area results in a greater positive whole-body metabolic
effect despite the lower induction.
This effect leads to improvement in many diseases and conditions, e.g.
diabetes, gout, regeneration of tissues after infections (hepatitis, mononucleosis, toxic destruction of tissues, etc.), and also in eczema and allergies.

Pulse of one polarity generated by the Biomag® systems allows the applicators to always have the same polarity at a certain area (applicator
polarity and its identifi cation are described on page 21).
Low frequency – 1 to 10 Hz
Analgesic and myo-relaxing effects prevail.
Medium frequency – 10 to 15 Hz
Anti-infl ammatory, suitable for chronic and degenerative diseases. It has
vasodilating and anti-oedematous effects, and enhances blood and lymph
circulation.
Higher frequency up to 25 Hz
Stimulating effects prevail which support bone healing, improve posttraumatic conditions and burns, stimulate healing process during acute
disease and provide detoxifi cation.
Frequencies above 25 Hz (26 to 162 Hz)
Used when we need to increase the intensity of the LPMF effects, or for
certain types of health problems such as burns, diffi cult fracture healing, and pseudoarthrosis. Intended for more intensive stimulation of the
healing process, regeneration, and detoxifi cation. Applications of higher
frequencies should be consulted with a specialist doctor providing consultancy for pulse magnetic therapy.

Selection and use of the
applicators
Healing and regenerative effect – has been demonstrated for bones
and soft tissues, and it is explained by a nonspecifi c irritation of the cytoplasmic membrane, which leads to the activation of the metabolic chain,
where the key point is the alteration of the cAMP/cGMP ratio and increased activation of osteoclasts during bone healing. LPMF signifi cantly
accelerates the healing process, activates the formation of new tissue
(rapid building of bone tissue and calcifi cation) and leads to increased
sensitivity to the parathyroid hormone. Therefore, low-frequency pulse
magnetic fi eld is used to accelerate the healing of fractures, pseudo-arthrosis (false joint), and for the reinforcement of loose and painful endoprostheses. The LPMF application increases the level of proteoglycans in
cartilage by up to 22% (according to Chvojka), which allows healing and
regeneration of cartilage that is otherwise diffi cult and infl uenced only to
a limited extent. Accelerated wound healing has been demonstrated not
only in blood, but also in soft tissue. The Biomag
a positive effect on both sterile (rheumatoid diseases) and microbial infl ammations and their healing. They induce increased phagocytic activity,
including production of superoxide, which inhibits microbial fl ora, but can
also be a source of temporary impairment, such as in patients with rheumatism during the fi rst applications. Subsequent activation of superoxide

Especially good results are achieved in the radicular and pseudo-radicular
syndromes (sciatica, nerve oppression of various origin). This effect is a
complex of other partial effects and it supports the natural ability of the
human body to heal and regenerate.

best suits the particular therapeutic purpose, and place it as close to the
surface of the treated part of the body as possible. Some applicators can
be fi xed to the affected part of the body with an elastic strap. Most of the
other applicators can be fi xed on the body using the relevant orthopaedic
FIX DUO fi xtures. It is good to use it if necessary because precise positioning of the applicator increases the application process effi ciency (for
solenoids generating the spatial pulse magnetic fi eld, it is suffi cient just
to insert the treated part of the body into the inner space of the solenoid).
When selecting a suitable applicator, focus on positioning the applicator
comfortably on the body, as close to the affected part of the body as possible; you should also consider whether the deep treatment (SOLENOID)
is required or whether just a fl at applicator will be suffi cient.
In both modes (EASY and CLINIC) in programs marked with the
symbol, it is convenient to use the applicator with a triple-connector (page
10), which turns on the individual components of the applicator gradually
and guarantees that when the applicator components are assembled, or
get close to each other, the magnetic fi eld intensity is not reduced. It also
provides better penetration of magnetic fi eld into the treated part of the
body, which improves the effi ciency of the application.

Knowledge of the cause of the problems is a critical requirement
for the applic
desired effect. To provide benefi ts in a number of medical conditions
and disorders, it is suitable to use more effects, in a successive or
alternate manner.
For example, problems with severe pain will be addressed fi rst by using
frequencies inducing analgesic effect, and after remission of the acute
pain frequencies inducing healing or other desired fi nal effects should
be used.
Pulse profi le, intensity of LPMF and frequency modulation (wobbling)
The program INDIVIDUAL indicates pulse profi le for each frequency and
intensity. A sharp pulse profi
while other profi les (ROUNDED, RECTANGULAR) have pain-soothing
effects and relax spasms. Modulation of frequencies in three-minute sequences provides the desired effect in a smooth manner. Modulation of
frequency after a pulse provokes more pronounced response of the body.
These facts should therefore be taken into consideration when choosing
the right application.
In this manual, we mainly describe and recommend the program frequency range of 1-81 Hz. Frequencies above 81 Hz (designed for special applications) are used for certain types of disabilities, such as burns, poorly
healing fractures and pseudo-arthrosis. In cases where the cause of local
pain is somewhere else, we recommend applying pulse magnetic fi eld
using two applic
ation. It determines the frequency that is to deliver the

The following description is focused on the choice of frequency and
other LPMF parameters by therapeutic effects. It is used for the Program INDIVIDUAL. Therapeutic effects are provided on page 14–15.
For easier setup you can also select the option of preset parameters
for each program (description of simple setup procedure is provided
on page 10; for a list of preset programs, see pages 5–8 and 18–20).
Each effect and the use of magnetic therapy should be judged by the
c condition and response of each patient. In the event of an

unexpected reaction, stop the application immediately! The application should not be resumed unless checked by the specialist doctor
based on the procedure specifi ed by them.
When using magnetic therapy as part of treatment for orthopedic and
similar diffi culties, in some people a slight temporary increase in sensitivity may be expected. This is a so-called spa syndrome and is frequently
followed by a signifi cant improvement. You are advised not to stop the

Number of applications
In general, the application time of magnetic therapy should be different
for different cases, sometimes also repeatedly in long cycles. Applications are usually performed twice a day; in more severe cases they can
be performed 3 times times a day on average or more often, at the recommended time interval of 6 hours. Where it is possible, do not stop
magnetic therapy suddenly, but at the end lengthen the intervals between
applications.
We recommend that patients with low blood pressure should rest for
about 20 minutes after the application. The recommended number of applications for short-term diffi culties is 20 to 30, but at least 10 applications. Long-term repeated applications are recommended particularly for
chronic conditions and aftercare.

General information:
• Physiological mechanisms of the magnetic therapy act on the systemic,
organ, tissue, cellular and molecular levels.
• Magnetic therapy may accelerate the remission of problems in painful conditions of vertebrogenic or muscle origin, during infl ammatory
conditions of nerves, muscles, tendons and bones, in the treatment of
joint swellings, arthrosis, while also accelerating the healing of bone
fractures, improving blood circulation in the affected areas, etc. In most
cases, the patient does not perceive any sensation during the application.
• The Biomag® tester is used to check the presence of pulsed magnetic
fi eld.
• Magnetic fi eld lines penetrate all parts of the body, bones and tissues
equally, the patient does not need to undress and even plaster casts are
not a problem.
• Metal implants are not contraindicated for the low-frequency pulse magnetic therapy.
• Before starting the treatment, have the patient assume a comfortable
position (sitting or lying).
• Attach the applicator close to the surface of the body portion to be treated, or the painful area.
• If possible, the fi rst fi ve applications should be performed on successive
days.
• If there is a slight impairment in the course of day 1 – 5 of the treatment, it
is a well-known process in the initial reactive phase and it is not a reason
for discontinuing the treatment. The pain usually disappears during the
following applications and is followed by signifi cant improvement.
• If there is no reaction to treatment within 5 – 6 applications, there is a
resistance to therapy. In such cases the effects may appear with 15–20
applications.
• Minimum application time is 20 minutes; the minimum number of applications is 10 while the optimum number is 15-20, in severe cases even
more.
• Apply magnetic therapy as soon as possible. Pulsed magnetic fi eld may
affect functional disorders, not fi xed pathological changes. An important
fact is that low-frequency magnetic therapy is not addictive and has no
known harmful side effects. Contraindications are also negligible (page 5).
Water treatment by magnetisation
Magnetisation gives water unique and biologically signifi cant properties.
Water becomes softer (surface and internal tension is reduced) and its
taste changes as well. Recommended exposure time is from 15 minutes
up to 4 hours. Magnetisation of fl uids is accelerated and effects extended
if the liquid is brought to the boil and allowed to cool in the magnetic fi eld.
This procedure is most suitable when making tea, particularly from herbs.
Food can also be magnetised, especially fruits with high water content.
For medical purposes, mostly magnetisation of water by bio-north pole
is used. Experiments have shown greater resistance of the body against
infection, regulatory effects on the digestive tract, anti-atherosclerotic effects and calming effects on the nervous system.

4. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
a) Technical description and specifi cations of the system
The Biomag® Lumina electronic system is a modern system for the application of pulse magnetic fi elds of low frequency which have a positive
regenerative effect on human health boosting the immune system. Operation of the system is very easy. There is indication of states, including
failures. Some states are indicated by audio signals.
In the EASY mode (for home care), the system offers 32 programs with
the frequency range of 1 to 81 Hz, and in the CLINIC mode (for healthcare providers), there are 108 programs with the frequency range of 1
to 162 Hz. The system generates pulses of one polarity and has 10 time
ranges, fi ve levels of output power, four outputs and it is relatively powerful
despite its very small size. The components of the device and the applicator are tested at a test voltage of 4000 V which guarantees absolutely
safe operation.

Disconnection of the system from power supply is done either by pulling
the power cord from the device connector (the power cord connector is
shown on page 10 in the description of the system and its controls), or by
