2. Measuring Principle
This scale uses the B.I.A. principle (bioelectric impedance analysis), which measures physical relationships within seconds via an unnoticeable and harmless signal from the conductors in the scale. The scale determines body fat percentage and other bodily aspects by measuring electrical resistance (impedance) and adjusting the results based on age, height, gender, weight and degree of physical activity.
Muscle tissue and water have good electrical conductivity, and therefore lower resistance. Fatty tissue, on the other hand, has low conductivity since fat cells have a lower water content.

Battery Handling Safety Precautions:
•U
se only the size and type of batteries specified.
•B
e sure to follow the correct polarity when installing the batteries. Reversed batteries may cause damage to
the device.
•D
o not mix different types of batteries together (e.g. Alkaline and Carbon-zinc or rechargeable batteries) or
old batteries with fresh ones. Always replace batteries as a simultaneous set.
•I
f the batteries in the device are depleted or the device will not be used for a long period of time, remove the
batteries to prevent damage or injury from possible battery leakage.
•D
o not try to recharge batteries not intended to be recharged; they can overheat and rupture (follow battery
manufacturer’s directions.)
•D
o not dispose of batteries in fire, batteries may explode or leak.
•C
lean the battery contacts and also those of the device prior to battery installation.
•R
emove discharged batteries from the product and dispose/recycle in compliance with all applicable laws.
•Keep batteries away from children and pets. Batteries may be harmful if swallowed. Should a child or pet
swallow a battery, seek medical assistance immediately.
If present, remove the battery insulating strip or the batteries’ protective film and insert the batteries according to the polarity indicated inside the battery compartment. If the scale does not power on, remove the batteries and reinsert. Replace the battery compartment cover. The scale is equipped with a “replace battery” indicator that displays “Lo” when battery power is weak. The scale will then shut off. Replace all four batteries with new “AAA” size alkaline batteries.
New batteries will last for approximately two years when using the unit about three times per day. Trial batter ies supplied with the unit may have a shorter life. Remove the batteries if you do not intend to use the unit for three months or longer.

Tips:
•
Place the scale on a hard, level floor (no carpet); a firm floor covering is required for correct measurement.
•
If possible, always weigh yourself at the same time of day (preferably in the morning) under comparable condi tions such as after using the toilet, on an empty stomach and unclothed, in order to achieve comparable results.
•
Stand still and upright during the measurement.
•
Wait a few hours after physical activity.
•
Wait about 15 minutes after getting up in the morning to allow the water in the body to distribute.
•
Remember that only long-term trends are important. Short-term changes in weight within a few days are usually caused by a loss of fluid. Body water plays an important role towards our general well-being.
Important when measuring body fat/body water/muscle percentage/bone mass:
•T
he measurement may only be carried out while barefoot. Dry soles or callused skin can result in unsatis-
factory results, as they have insufficient conductivity.
•Your feet, legs, calves and thighs must not touch each other, as otherwise the measurement cannot be
performed correctly.

Body fat
The following body fat percentages are guide values (contact your physician for further information). A lower value is often found in athletes. Depending on the type of sports, training intensity and physical con
stitution, values may result which are below the recommended values stated. It should, however, be noted that there could be a danger to health in the case of extremely low values.

Body water
According to the World Health Organization (WHO 2001), the percentage of body water should normally lie within the following ranges: Women: 50 – 55 % Men: 60 – 65 % Children: 65 –75 %
7
Body fat contains relatively little water. Therefore people with a high body fat percentage have body water per centages below the recommended values. With endurance athletes, however, the recommended values could be exceeded due to low fat percentages and high muscle percentage. This scale is unsuitable for measuring body water in order to draw medical conclusions concerning age-related water retention, for example. If necessary ask your physician. Basically, a high body water percentage should be the aim.
-
Muscle percentage
As the percentage of muscle differs from individual to individual, there are no generally valid guidelines.
Bone mass
This feature indicates the amount of bone (bone mineral level, calcium or other minerals) in the body. Like the rest of our body, our bones are subject to the natural development, degeneration and aging processes. Bone mass increases rapidly in childhood and reaches its maximum between 30 and 40 years of age. Bone mass reduces slightly with increasing age. You can reduce this degeneration somewhat with healthy nutrition (particularly calcium and vitamin D) and regular exercise. With appropriate muscle building, you can also strengthen your bone structure. Do not confuse bone mass with bone density. Bone density can be determined only by means of a medical examination (e.g. computer tomography, ultrasound). It is therefore not possible to draw conclusions concerning changes to the bones and bone hardness (e.g. osteoporosis) using this scale. Only small changes to bone mass are possible by individuals, but it will vary slightly within the influencing factors (weight, height, age, gender).
Active metabolic rate
The Active Metabolic Rate (AMR) is the amount of energy required daily by the body in its active state. This AMR value is displayed automatically as soon as you select your user data symbol or and the activity mode under settings. To maintain your existing weight, the amount of energy used must be reintroduced into the body in the form of food and drink. If less energy is introduced than is used over a longer period of time, your body will obtain the difference largely from the amount of fat stored and your weight will reduce. If, on the other hand, over a longer period of time more energy is introduced than the total active metabolic rate (AMR) calculated, your body will be unable to burn off the excess energy, and the excess will be stored in the body as fat and your weight will increase.
8. Interpretation of results
Remember that only long-term trends are important. Short-term fluctuations in weight over a few days are usually the result of fluid change, due to fluid intake or loss. Interpretation of the results will depend on changes in your overall weight and body fat, body water and muscle percentages, as well as the period in which these changes take place. Sudden changes within days must be distinguished from medium-term changes (over weeks) and long-term changes (months).
A basic rule is that short-term changes in weight almost exclusively represent changes in water content, whereas medium and long-term changes may also involve the fat and muscle percentages.
•I
f your weight reduces over the short term, but your body fat percentage increases or remains the same, you
have merely lost water – e.g. after working out, a sauna session, or a diet focused solely on rapid weight loss.
•I
f your weight increases over the medium term and the body fat percentage falls or stays the same, then you
may have increased valuable muscle mass.
•I
f your weight and body fat percentage fall simultaneously, then your diet is working – you are losing fat mass.
•Ideally you should support your diet with physical activity, fitness or power training. This way you can increase
your muscle percentage over the medium term.
•Body fat, body water, or muscle percentages should not be added (certain elements of muscle tissue also
contain body water).
