Taking ca re of yo ur came ra
• The camera operating temperature is between 0 and 40 degrees Celsius. It is normal for the operating time to be shortened when the temperature is low.
• Do not use or store your camera in the environments listed below:
• Direct sunlight
• High and dusty places
• Next to an air conditioner, electric heater or other heat sources
• In a closed car that is in direct sunlight
• Unstable locations
• If your camera becomes wet, wipe it with a dry cloth as soon as possible.
• Salt or seawater may cause severe camera damage.
• Do not use solvents, such as alcohol, to clean your camera.
• If the lens is dirty, use a lens brush or soft cloth to clean the lens. Do not touch the lens with your fingers.
• To prevent electric shock, do not attempt to disassemble or repair your camera by yourself.
• Water may cause a fire or electric shock. Therefore, store your camera in a dry place.
• Do not use your camera outdoors when it is raining or snowing.
• Do not use your camera in or near water.
• If a foreign substance or water gets in your camera, please turn the power off immediately and disconnect the batteries and the power adapter. Remove the foreign substance or water, and send it to the maintenance center.
• Transfer the data to the computer as soon as possible to avoid losing your images and/or video clips.

• It is normal for the camera to become warm during operation, because metal camera casing can conduct heat.
• The LCD display on this camera is manufactured with sophisticated technology, and more than 99.99% of the pixels on the LCD display meet standard specifications. Yet, it is possible that less than 0.01% of the pixels on the LCD display may have some light spots or show unusual colors. This is normal and does not indicate display malfunction, nor will this affect the pictures you take with the camera.

Preparing the camera for use

Use only the specified battery for the camera, and always turn off the camera before inserting or removing the battery.

To install the battery:
1. Open the battery/SD card cover (A).
2. Insert the battery in the correct direction (B).
3. Push the battery all the way down, until the battery lock lever clicks into place (C).
4. Close the battery/SD card cover (D).

To remove the battery:
1. Open the battery/SD card cover.
2. Release the battery lock lever.
3. When the battery has come out a little, gently pull it out the rest of the way.
4. Close the battery/SD card cover.

Charging the battery

The battery charge status affects the camera performance. To maximize the performance and the battery life, fully charge the battery using the specified charger and AC power adapter, and then fully discharge it through normal use at least once.
To charge the battery:
1. Insert the battery into the charger.
2. Connect one end of the AC power adapter to the charger.
3. Connect the other end of the AC power adapter to a wall outlet.
4. When the battery is being charged, the charger LED indicator lights up in red. When the battery is fully charged, it turns into green.
• Damage caused by the use of an incorrect charger set is not covered under the warranty.
• The battery may be warm after being charged or used. This is normal and not a malfunction.
• When using the camera in a cold environment, keep the camera and its battery warm by holding it inside your jacket or another warm protective environment.

Using touch screen and buttons

You can use the stylus or your finger (may cause fingerprints on the screen though) to select options available from the touch screen. Yet, some operations must work with buttons
(such as DISPLAY and Play ). So, this user manual uses “tap”, “circle”, or “swipe” when referring to touch screen actions and “press” when referring to button actions.

Using an SD card

The camera comes with internal memory for storing captured images, video clips, or audio

files. You can also add an SD (Secure Digital) card to store more files.
To install an SD card:
1. Make sure the camera is turned off.
2. Open the battery/SD card cover.
3. Insert an SD card in the correct direction.
4. Close the battery/SD card cover.
To remove an SD card:
1. Make sure the camera is turned off.
2. Open the battery/SD card cover.
3. Press lightly the edge of the SD card to eject.
4. Close the battery/SD card cover.
• Before initial use of an SD card, tap > > > Manage Memory > Format to format the card first. Remember to slide the write-protect tab (on the side of the SD
card) to the unlock position. Otherwise, all data (if any) on the SD card is protected and the card cannot be formatted.
• SD memory card in the following sizes are supported: 64 MB, 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 2GB, 4GB, and up to 8GB SDHC. The camera is compatible with SD memory cards manufactured by Panasonic, Toshiba, and Sandisk. Please contact your local dealer for purchase information.

Setting language

This is to select the language version to show on the screen.
To select a language:
Tap > > > Language, and tap a language (tap / to find more
languages as needed).

Setting date and time

When first time using the camera or the camera battery has been removed for a long time, you need to set the date and time.
To set date and time:
1. Tap > > > Date Format, and tap the screen to choose preferred formats.
2. Tap Date/Time, and then tap / to choose correct date and time.
3. Tap OK.
4. Tap to exit.

Operating the camera

The procedure below is a general guideline for basic operation. It is particularly useful if you are new to the camera.
1. Press .
2. Tap for desired options; tap for more options.
3. Follow the on-screen display (and instructions wherever available) and tap the corresponding icon to access and set more options. At any time, you can cancel the current
operation by tapping to return to your previous step.
4. Press T to zoom-in or W to zoom-out.
5. Press the shutter halfway to set automatic focus and exposure.
6. Press the shutter down fully to capture.
7. Release the shutter.
8. In the Movie Record mode, press the shutter to stop video recording.
• If you press the shutter halfway to set automatic focus, the camera is ready to capture when the auto focus frame is yellow. If there is no auto focus frame or the frame is red and you press the shutter down, it will result in blurred photos.
• During zoom-in/out, there is a separator in the zoom bar between W and T. For best image quality, it is recommended to use optical zoom only by keeping the magnification within W and the separator.
• Flash is automatically turned off in the Movie Record mode.
• The Movie Record mode records both sound and video. Yet, sound is not recorded during zoom-in/out.
• At any time, you can press to turn off the camera.
• In the capture or playback mode, press repeatedly to decide what information to show on the screen.

Viewing captured images and videos

To enter the playback mode, press to view the image or video just captured.

• To view the previous image/video, swipe and slide the screen (at least 1/3 of the width; see the illustrations below from A to C) to the right, or tap on the Control Panel.
• To view the next image/video, swipe and slide the screen (at least 1/3 of the width) to the left, or tap on the Control Panel.
• Press W and you can still use the Swipe-to-Slide feature to view captured images and recorded videos in a loop.
• Press W again to view 12 thumbnails on the screen.

• You can toggle between the above two playback modes by pressing T and W.
• To zoom-in/out an image, press T or W, or you can use the stylus or your fingertip to circle the area you want to zoom in directly on the screen. You can also tap the screen
directly to maximize the image, and drag the image to see certain area, or tap to
crop the image.
• If a photo was captured in the portrait orientation and then you saved it into the landscape orientation, the photo will still rotate back into the portrait orientation temporarily when you enlarge it on your camera.
• For a video file, tap to start playback.
• Tap to start the slideshow playback.
• Tap for more options.
• Anytime in the playback mode, you can press or the shutter to switch to the capture mode.
• For image/audio/video files captured by other devices, your camera may not be able to show the detailed file information (e.g. resolution) or to edit them (e.g. using My Drawings or Add Memo).

Scene mode

Select one of the following scene modes to fit your shooting condition.

10 Capture mode
When the icon shows in a thumbnail or on the screen, this means that the file is in the
unknown file format or a corrupted file.

Using Smile Catch:
Smile Catch automatically captures the moment of a smile of your subject.
1. Tap and select from the scene mode icons.
2. The camera is tracking the face of your subject (a white frame shows).
3. Press the shutter halfway to set automatic focus. Wait until the auto focus frame turns into yellow, then press the shutter down to activate smile tracking, and then release the shutter immediately. The camera now is tracking the smile of your subject.
4. Once a smile is detected, the camera instantly takes a picture.
5. The camera continues to detect smiles and takes more pictures (Step 4 is repeated). To stop the smile tracking at anytime, press the shutter.
• In order to detect the smile easily and obtain better image quality, it is recommended to have your subject facing toward the lens in the Smile Catch mode.
• The camera will also automatically stop smile tracking if your subject leaves your composition area.
• Face tracking is always on in the Smile Catch mode.
• It is recommended to turn off the flash in the Smile Catch mode, so the camera can save time in recharging and continue to catch more smiles.

Flash mode

The flash offers an additional light source (usually used in a low-light environment). You can capture an image using one of the following flash modes.

White balance compensates for color temperatures in different lighting conditions, so white and other colors can display properly when you capture images.

Effect

You can add special effects to your images in capture mode.

16 Capture mode

AF Area

Center Focuses on the center of the touch screen.

To select an automatic focus option:
1. Tap .

4. The currently selected icon of auto focus option shows. Tap another icon of your choice.
5. Tap to exit.
Using Face Tracking:
1. Follow the steps above to select Face Tracking in AF Area.
2. Aim the lens at the subject(s). One or several white frames show on the screen focusing on the subjects, depending on the number of subjects detected by the camera.
3. Press the shutter halfway to set automatic focus.
4. Wait until the frames turn to yellow, and then press the shutter down.
In order to detect the face(s) easily and obtain better image quality, it is recommended to have your subjects facing toward the lens when you use Face Tracking.

Setting EV

EV (exposure value) lightens or darkens the entire image. Adjust EV when the brightness between the subject and the background is not balanced, or when the subject occupies only a small part of the picture.
To select an EV:
1. Tap .
2. Tap and then .
3. Tap and then EV.
4. The current EV setting shows. Tap any position of the EV bar or tap +/- of your choice.
5. Tap OK.
6. Tap to exit.

Setting sharpness, saturation, contrast & instant review

You can adjust how colors appear in the pictures by setting sharpness, saturation, and contrast.
1. Tap .
2. Tap and then .
3. Tap for Sharpne ss, Saturation, and Contrast.
4. The currently selected icons of these three options show. Select one to tap it, and then tap an icon of your choice. You can select Low, Normal, or High for sharpness, saturation, and contrast.
Also, you can decide the time you want the image to display after shooting.
1. Tap .
2. Tap and then .
3. Tap Instant Review.
4. For instant review, you can decide the duration (in seconds) of showing the image right after you just captured it or turn the feature off.
5. Tap twice to exit.

More options are available for image settings in > > .

Flash Intensity Sets the intensity of the flash.

• If the original image size is larger than 3M, the image size will be automatically changed to 3M.
• If the original image size is 3M or smaller, the original image size will be retained.

Movie Record mode settings

If you select (Movie Record) as the scene mode, different options are offered in the

Quick Bar. You can change the settings but you cannot customize the options shown in the Quick Bar.

Using My Drawings and Add Memo

Add preset or customized drawings (including handwriting), stamps, and callouts to an

• Drawings/stamps/callouts (described as “scribbles” below) cannot be added an audio/ video file, or to an image of 16:9, 3:2, or lower than 3M.
• After scribbles are added to an image and saved, this image will be automatically resized to a 3M image.
1. Tap and select an image.
2. Tap > (My Drawings) or (Add Memo). The toolbar is automatically
displayed. Select a tool, and customize its type and color. (For details on the icons of the tools, see below.)
3. Tap . You are ready to add your drawings or texts to the image.
4. To change tools/types/colors, you need to tap again to access the toolbar.
5. To undo your last move, tap [UNDO]; to erase all drawings on the selected image
(before you save the settings), tap [RESET].
6. To save the modified image, tap [SAVE]. Or you can tap > [YES] to discard the
modified image and exit.

1. Tap , and then tap for a type and for a color.

Eraser Removes part or all of the scribbles.
Selects a preset frame for a callout.
To select a preset frame:
1. Tap , and then tap for a preset frame and

3. On the touch screen, tap the location where you want to add a frame. You can add as many frames as you want, or repeat step 1 to add other types of frames.
To use the eraser:
1. Tap , and then tap to select an eraser type (from thin to thick).
2. Tap .
3. On the touch screen, tap the location where you want to remove the scribbles, and then drag your finger or stylus to start removing.
Undo / Redo Used to undo or redo your last move.
Reset Removes all scribbles.
Save Saves the modified file.
Discard Discards the modified file.
Tap Save As to save as a new file; tap No to exit; tap Overwrite to replace the current file.

Rotating an image

Changes the orientation of an image.
To rotate an image:
1. Tap and select an image.
1. Tap > , and then tap a thumbnail in the orientation you want. The newly rotated
image overwrites the original one and shows on the screen.

Adding Z-Lighting effect

1. Tap and select an image.
2. Tap > . Tap the lighting bar. The Z-Lighting effect (mainly enhancing the
brightness and contrast in the darker area of a picture) improves overall exposure quality.
3. Tap OK to save the setting and exit.

Protect

Prevents selected files from accidental removal.

To protect files:
1. Tap and select an image.
2. Tap > .
3. Select whether to protect this selected file or all files.
4. Select Yes to enable protection. To select multiple files, tap Select and tap more files. Each
protected file has the icon when viewed. Then select OK and Yes.
5. To disable protection, follow preceding step 1 to 3, and tap Yes to unprotect the file.

Adding a photo frame

Adds a preset decorative frame to an image.
To add a photo frame:
1. Tap and select an image.
1. Tap > , and then tap / to select a photo frame of your choice.
2. Tap OK and then choose to overwrite or save the image as a new file.
• A photo frame cannot be added to an audio/video file.
• After a photo frame is added to an image in the size of 3M or above, this image will be automatically resized to a 3M image.

DPOF

Enters the Digital Print Order Format (DPOF) data to selected images or all images. So, a DPOF-compatible printer can read this data while printing.
To e nt er DPOF dat a:
1. Tap and select an image.
2. Tap > .
3. Select the current image or all images to add DPOF. To select multiple files, tap Select and tap more files. Then tap OK.
4. Select whether to print date and number of copies to print.
5. Tap OK.

Deleting files

Removes selected or all files.
1. Tap and select an image.
2. Tap > .
3. Select Yes to delete the selected file; select All to delete all files. To select multiple files, tap Select and tap more files. Then tap OK.

Resize

Changes an image to a smaller size.
To resize an image:
1. Tap and select an image.
2. Tap > > > Resize.
3. Select the new image size and the quality level.
4. Tap Overwrite to replace the current image file, or Save as to save to another file.

Inserts a voice annotation to an image file.
To add a voice memo:
1. Tap and select an image.
2. Tap > > > Voice memo.
3. Tap to start recording your voice. Tap again to stop. When viewing the image
later, you can see the icon indicating that a voice memo is attached.

Connecting the camera to a computer

You can connect the camera to a PC or notebook to transfer, view, print, or edit files.
To connect the camera to a computer:

Connecting the camera to an AV system

You can play files in your camera from an AV system such as TV or projector.
To connect the camera to an AV system:
1. Connect the end of the smaller plug of the AV cable to the camera.
2. Connect the yellow video plug and the white audio plug of the AV cable to a video-input jack and an audio-input jack (left channel) on your AV system.
3. Turn on the AV system, and then switch to the AV source connecting to the camera.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions to operate the camera via the TV or projector screen.
Audio or video files captured by the camera cannot be played back when the camera is connected to a TV.

Printing images

In addition to printing images by connecting the camera to a printer via a computer or bringing the SD card (if available) to a photo-processing center, you can choose to print using PictBridge or DPOF.

Printing with Printer mode

You can directly print images by connecting your camera to a PictBridge-compatible printer without using a computer.
To print images from a PictBridge-compatible printer:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Connect the end of the smaller plug of the USB cable to the camera.
3. Connect the other end of the USB cable to an available USB port on your printer.
4. Turn on the printer. Wait for a while until the printer is ready to print.
5. Turn on the camera.
6. Follow the remaining on-screen instructions in your camera and/or printer to complete printing.
The above procedure may vary depending on the printer type you are using.

Troubleshooting and service information

If your camera cannot operate normally, see the frequently encountered problems and solutions listed below. If the problem persists, contact your nearest service center or technical support.
Problem Cause Solution
I cannot play back video clips by using Windows Media Player.
The camera cannot power up.
The battery power is draining quickly.
The battery or camera is warm.
The flash does not fire or recharge.
Even though the flash fired, the image is dark.
The image is too bright or too dark.
I cannot format a memory card.
The MPEG-4 video compression method is in the XviD format. If the XviD codec is not installed, it might not be able to play back the video clips on your computer.
There is no battery or the battery is not inserted correctly.
The battery has no power. Recharge the battery.
The external temperature is extremely low.
Many shots are being captured in dark places, requiring a flash.
The battery was not fully charged, or it has not been used for an extended period of time after being charged.
The camera or flash was used continuously over a long period of time.
The camera flash is turned off. Set the flash to Auto Flash.

The distance to the subject is greater than the flash's effective range.
