Taking care of your camera
• The camera operating temperature is between 0 and 40 degrees Celsius. It is normal for the operating time to be shortened when the temperature is low.
• Do not use or store your camera in the environments listed below:
• Direct sunlight
• High and dusty places
• Next to an air conditioner, electric heater or other heat sources
• In a closed car that is in direct sunlight
• Unstable locations
• If your camera becomes wet, wipe it with a dry cloth as soon as possible.
• Salt or seawater may cause severe camera damage.
• Do not use solvents, such as alcohol, to clean your camera.
• If the lens is dirty, use a lens brush or soft cloth to clean the lens. Do not touch the lens with your fingers.
• To prevent electric shock, do not attempt to disassemble or repair your camera by yourself.
• Water may cause a fire or electric shock. Therefore, store your camera in a dry place.
• Do not use your camera outdoors when it is raining or snowing.
• Do not use your camera in or near water.
• If a foreign substance or water gets in your camera, please turn the power off immediately and disconnect the batteries and the power adapter. Remove the foreign substance or water, and send it to the maintenance center.
• Transfer the data to the computer as soon as possible to avoid losing your images and/or video clips.

• It is normal for the camera to become warm during operation, because metal camera casing can conduct heat.
• The LCD display on this camera is manufactured with sophisticated technology, and more than 99.99% of the pixels on the LCD display meet standard specifications. Yet, it is possible that less than 0.01% of the pixels on the LCD display may have some light spots or show unusual colors. This is normal and does not indicate display malfunction, nor will this affect the pictures you take with the camera.

Preparing the camera for use

Use only the specified battery for the camera, and always turn off the camera before inserting or removing the battery.

To install the battery:
1. Open the battery/SD card cover (A).
2. Insert the battery in the correct direction (B).
3. Push the battery all the way down, until the battery lock lever clicks into place (C).
4. Close the battery/SD card cover (D).

To remove the battery:
1. Open the battery/SD card cover.
2. Release the battery lock lever.
3. When the battery has come out a little, gently pull it out the rest of the way.
4. Close the battery/SD card cover.

Charging the battery

The battery charge status affects the camera performance. To maximize the performance and the battery life, fully charge the battery using the specified charger and AC power adapter, and then fully discharge it through normal use at least once.
To charge the battery:
1. Insert the battery into the charger.
2. Connect one end of the AC power adapter to the charger.
3. Connect the other end of the AC power adapter to a wall outlet.
4. When the battery is being charged, the charger LED indicator lights up in red. When the battery is fully charged, it turns into green.
• Damage caused by the use of an incorrect charger set is not covered under the warranty.
• The battery may be warm after being charged or used. This is normal and not a malfunction.
• When using the camera in a cold environment, keep the camera and its battery warm by holding it inside your jacket or another warm protective environment.

Using touch screen and buttons

You can use the attached stylus or your finger (may cause fingerprints on the screen tough) to select options available from the touch screen. Yet, some operations must work with
buttons (such as MENU and Play ). So, this user manual uses “tap” when referring to touch screen actions and “press” when referring to button actions.

Using an SD card

The camera comes with internal memory for storing captured images, video clips, or audio

files. You can also add an SD (Secure Digital) card to store more files.
To install an SD card:
1. Make sure the camera is turned off.
2. Open the battery/SD card cover.
3. Insert an SD card in the correct direction.
4. Close the battery/SD card cover.
To remove an SD card:
1. Make sure the camera is turned off.
2. Open the battery/SD card cover.
3. Press lightly the edge of the SD card to eject.
4. Close the battery/SD card cover.
Before initial use of an SD card, press and tap > to format the card first. Remember to slide the write-protect tab (on the side of the SD card) to the unlock position. Otherwise, all data (if any) on the SD card is protected and the card cannot be formatted.

Setting language

This is to select the language version to show on the screen.
To select a language:
1. Press ,
2. Tap > , and tap a language (tap / to find more languages as needed).

Setting date, time, and region

When first time using the camera or the camera battery has been removed for a long time, you need to set the date, time, and where you are located.
To set date, time, and region:
1. Press .
2. Tap > > Date Style, and then tap / to choose preferred formats.
3. Tap OK.
4. Tap Date or Time, and then tap / to choose correct date or time.
5. Tap OK.
6. Tap OK, and then tap World Time.
7. Tap , and then tap / or directly press a point on the map to choose a city
closest to where you are.
8. Tap DST to set daylight saving time as needed.
9. Press to exit.
• If you also set the destination city, you can tap Select Time to display and record using the date and time at hometown or destination.
• When you select to use the date and time at destination (useful when you travel there), an aircraft icon will show beside the date and time on the screen.

Operating the camera

The procedure below is a general guideline for basic operation. It is particularly useful if you are new to the camera.
1. Press .
2. Tap the touch screen or press for desired options.
3. Follow the on-screen display (and instructions wherever available) and tap the corresponding icon to access and set more options. At any time, you can cancel the current
operation by pressing to return to your previous step.
4. Press T to zoom-in or W to zoom-out.
5. Press the shutter halfway to set automatic focus and exposure.
6. Press the shutter down fully to capture.
7. Release the shutter.
8. In the Movie Record mode, press the shutter to stop video recording.
9. Press different images/videos. You can also press T or W to zoom-in/out a captured images, or press W to view 9 images on the screen. For other options, follow the on-screen display or tap the touch screen.

• During zoom-in/out, there is a separator in the zoom bar between W and T. For best image quality, it is recommended to use optical zoom only by keeping the magnification within W and the separator.
• Flash is automatically turned off in the Movie Record mode.
• The Movie Record mode records both sound and video. The recording time is continuous, but recording will stop once the SD card space is full.
• Anytime in the playback mode, you can press or the shutter to switch to the capture mode.
• At any time, you can press to turn off the camera.
• In capture or playback mode, tap the touch screen and tap to decide what information to show on the screen.

The flash offers an additional light source (usually used in a low-light environment). You can capture an image using one of the following flash modes.

Capture mode 9
Soft flash Opens the shutter for a longer period and fires the flash
just before it closes. Select this mode for illuminating a foreground subject while retaining a darker background. It is useful when capturing a night scene with people in the foreground.
To select a flash mode:
1. Tap the touch screen.
2. The currently selected flash mode shows. Tap it, and then tap another icon of your choice.
If you change the flash mode, the camera will retain that setting even if the camera is
turned off.

Drive mode

Icon Mode Description
- Standard Self-timer and Continuous Shooting are disabled.
Self-timer Automatically takes a picture after 2 or 10 second delay.
Continuous Shooting Continuously takes pictures as long as you keep

Best image quality with the lowest compression rate. File size is the largest.
Better image quality with medium compression rate. File size is medium.
Good image quality with the highest compression rate. File size is the smallest.
To select an image quality level:
1. Press .
2. Tap .
3. The currently selected icon of image quality level shows. Tap it, and then tap another icon of your choice.
4. Press twice to exit.
Capture mode 11

White balance

White balance compensates for color temperatures in different lighting conditions, so white and other colors can display properly when you capture images.
Icon Mode Description
Auto Adjusts white balance automatically.
Daylight Used in bright daylight conditions.
Shade Used in cloudy, twilight, or shady conditions.
Tungsten Light Used when subjects lit by tungsten (incandescent) lighting.
Fluorescent Light Used when subjects lit by fluorescent lighting.

Manual Used when you want to manually adjust white balance in a
particular lighting condition.
To select white balance:
1. Press .
2. Tap .
3. The currently selected icon of white balance shows. Tap it, and then tap another icon of your choice.
4. Tap OK. (If you select the manual mode, you must first point the adjustment frame shown on the touch screen at a blank sheet of white paper (or something similar), and then tap Adj. to let the camera detect proper colors.)
5. Press twice to exit.

Focusing area: Multiple Focuses on a wide range of objects.

The higher the ISO value, the more noise you may see in the image.

Equivalent to color ISO 80/160/320 film. Used for outdoor photography in bright sunlight.
Equivalent to color ISO 400/800 film. Used it in a low-light environment or where the flash light is not allowed.
To select an ISO value:
1. Press .

3. The currently selected icon of ISO value shows. Tap it, and then tap another icon of your choice.
4. Press twice to exit.
Capture mode 13

Setting EV

EV (exposure value) lightens or darkens the entire image. Adjust EV when the brightness between the subject and the background is not balanced, or when the subject occupies only a small part of the picture.
To select an EV:
1. Press .
2. Tap .
3. The currently selected icon of EV shows. Tap it, and then tap any position of the EV bar or tap +/- of your choice.
4. Tap OK.
5. Press twice to exit.

Setting sharpness, saturation, contrast & instant review

You can adjust how colors appear in the pictures by setting sharpness, saturation, and contrast. Also, you can decide how long you want to review the image you just captured.
1. Press .
2. Tap .
3. The currently selected icons of these four options show. Select one to tap it, and then tap an icon of your choice. You can select Low, Normal, or High for sharpness, saturation, and contrast. For instant review, you can decide the duration (in seconds) of showing the image right after you just captured it or turn the feature off.
4. Press twice to exit.

Movie Record mode settings

Common settings

Here you can decide whether to enable digital zoom, choose the stored settings for the

camera to remember (useful when you turn it on next time), or select the hot keys to be displayed when you tap the touch screen (by default, there are 4 icons).

5. Press a few times (depending on the previous option you selected) to exit.

Sound settings

Here you can adjust the volume for operation and playback.
To select a sound option:
1. Press .
2. Tap .
3. The currently selected icons of volume show. Select one to tap it, and then tap an icon of your choice.
4. Tap OK.
5. Press twice to exit.

Playback palette

Slideshow

Sets the time interval plus screen and sound effects for presenting a series of captured image and video files.
To play a slideshow:
1. Press , and then tap the touch screen.
2. Tap > > OK.

Resize

Changes an image to a smaller size.
To resize an image:
1. Press and select an image. Then tap the touch screen.
2. Tap > > OK.
3. Select the new image size and the quality level, and then tap OK.
4. Tap Overwrite to replace the current image file, or Save as to save to another file.

Cropping

Selects part of an image file and save it as another new file.
To crop an image:
1. Press and select an image. Then tap the touch screen.
2. Tap > > OK.
3. A cropping frame shows. Tap and drag it to select the area you want to keep as a new image. Tap Change Size to adjust the size of the cropping frame as needed.
4. Tap OK.

Image/Sound copy

Copies files between the SD card and the internal memory.
To copy files:
1. Press , and then tap the touch screen.
2. Tap > > OK.
3. Select the direction of copying. When copying from the SD card to the internal memory, you must select a file to copy first.

Special effect

Adds a photo frame, preset stamps, or your own drawing and handwriting to an image.
To add a special effect:
1. Press and select an image. Then tap the touch screen.
2. Tap > > OK.
3. Select whether to add a photo frame, stamps, or drawing and handwriting as needed. (See "Adding drawings and stamps to an image" on page 21 and "Adding a photo frame" on page 22 for details.)
4. Tap to exit and select a method to save the modified image.
Playback mode 19

Voice memo

Inserts a voice annotation to an image file.
To add a voice memo:
1. Press and select an image. Then tap the touch screen.
2. Tap > > OK.
3. Start recording your voice. Tap to stop. When viewing the image later, you can see the
icon indicating that a voice memo is attached.

Protect

Prevents selected files from accidental removal.
To protect files:
1. Press and select an image. Then tap the touch screen.
2. Tap > > OK.
3. Select whether to protect this selected file or all files.
4. Select Protect to enable protection or Unprotect to disable protection. Each protected file
has the icon when viewed.

DPOF

Enters the Digital Print Order Format (DPOF) data to selected images or all images. So, a DPOF-compatible printer can read this data while printing.
To e n ter D POF d ata :
1. Press and select an image. Then tap the touch screen.
2. Tap > > OK.
3. Select the current image or all images to add DPOF.
4. Select whether to print date and number of copies to print.
5. Tap OK.

Start-up screen

Sets the welcome image when the camera is powering on.
To select a start-up image:
1. Press , and then tap the touch screen.
2. Tap > > OK.
3. Tap / to select an image, and then tap OK.

Enlarging an image

Magnifies an image, so more details can be seen.
To enlarge an image:
1. Press .
2. Tap / to move to the image you want to enlarge.

Viewing multiple files at a time

Shows up to 9 files at a time on the screen.
To view multiple files:
1. Press > W.
2. Maximum 9 files (shown in thumbnails) are displayed on the screen. Tap a thumbnail to
view the corresponding file in its normal view, or tap / to move to different pages to view other files.

Rotating an image

Changes the orientation of an image.
To rotate an image:
1. Press and select an image. Then tap the touch screen.
2. Tap , and then tap a thumbnail in the orientation you want. The newly rotated image overwrites the original one and shows on the screen.

Deleting files

Removes selected or all files.
To delete one file:
1. Press and select an image. Then tap the touch screen.
2. Tap > > Delete.
To delete all files:
1. Press .
2. Tap the touch screen.
3. Tap > > Delete All.
To delete selected files:
1. Press > W.
2. Tap , and then tap the files (in thumbnails) you want to delete. Each selected thumbnail
has the icon .

Adding drawings and stamps to an image

Adds preset or customized drawings (including handwriting) and stamps to an image.
• Drawings and stamps cannot be added to an image of 640 x 480 or an audio/video file.
• After drawings or stamps are added to an image, this image will be automatically resized to a 2M image.
To add drawings and stamps:
1. Press and select an image. Then tap the touch screen.
2. Tap , and then tap one or more of the following tools to add stamps or drawings.
Icon Tool Description
Line Creates lines such as handwriting.
To create lines:
1. Tap , and then select a color and a type for the line.
2. Tap OK.
3. Start tapping on the touch screen, and then drag your finger or stylus to create lines.
Stamp Selects a preset stamp.
To select a preset stamp:
1. Tap , and then tap a preset stamp. If you want to
rotate a stamp, tap and select an orientation.
2. Tap OK.
3. On the touch screen, tap the location where you want to add a stamp. You can add as many stamps as you want, or repeat steps 1 and 3 to add other types of stamps.
Custom-made stamp
Creates a custom-shape stamp.
To create a custom-shape stamp:
1. Tap , and then drag your finger or stylus to select a closed area.
2. Tap OK > Save. The stamp is automatically saved to the My Stamps folder.

Eraser Removes part or all of the drawings and stamps.
To select a custom-made stamp:

To use the eraser:
1. Tap , and then select an eraser type (from thin to thick).

3. On the touch screen, tap the location where you want to remove drawings and stamps, and then drag your finger or stylus to start removing.
• In Step 1, tap CLS if you want to remove all drawings and
stamps.
• The eraser tool cannot remove stamps stored in the My
Stamps folder.
4. Tap OK.
5. Tap to add a photo frame, or tap to continue drawing as needed. If you have
completed drawing, tap , and then choose to overwrite or save the image as a new file.

Adding a photo frame

Adds a preset decorative frame to an image.
To add a photo frame:
1. Press and select an image. Then tap the touch screen.
2. Tap , and then tap / to select a photo frame of your choice.
3. Tap OK > , and then choose to overwrite or save the image as a new file.
• A photo frame cannot be added to an image of 640 x 480 or an audio/video file.
• After a photo frame is added to an image in the size of 4M or above, this image will be automatically resized to a 3M image.

2. Connect the yellow video plug and the white audio plug of the AV cable to a video-input jack and an audio-input jack (left channel) on your AV system.
3. Turn on the AV system, and then switch to the AV source connecting to the camera.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions to operate the camera via the TV or projector screen.

Printing with PictBridge

You can directly print images by connecting your camera to a PictBridge-compatible printer without using a computer.
To print images from a PictBridge-compatible printer:
1. Make sure the USB connection is set to PictBridge. (Press , and then tap >

3. Connect the end of the smaller plug of the USB cable to the camera.
4. Connect the other end of the USB cable to an available USB port on your printer.
5. Turn on the printer. Wait for a while until the printer is ready to print.

If your camera cannot operate normally, see the frequently encountered problems and solutions listed below. If the problem persists, contact your nearest service center or technical support.

I cannot play back video clips by using Windows Media Player.

The MPEG-4 video compression method is in the XviD format. If the XviD codec is not installed, it might not be able to play back the video clips on your computer.
