Subject: Automatic Slack Adjusters w/Quick Connect Yoke
Assembly
We would like to call your attention to the correct procedure for removal and installation
of the quick connect yoke assemblies incorporated on some Bendix automatic slack
adjusters. These assemblies are primarily used on Ford trucks.
REMOVAL (Ref. Figure 1)
1. Loosen the brake chamber push rod lock nut.
2. Remove retainer.
3. Turn the manual adjustment by means of the 3/8 in. square hole, in the direction
opposite to the arrow on the adjusting crank, until the yoke is clear of the push rod
adapter.
4. Remove the slack adjuster from the foundation brake camshaft.
INSTALLATION (Ref. Figure 1)
1. Install the replacement slack adjuster on the camshaft.
2. Run the push rod locknut on the push rod approximately 1-1/2 in., place the flat
washer in position and thread the push rod adapter onto the push rod so that
approximately 1/8 in. of the push rod is showing.
3. Turn the external manual adjustment until the push rod adapter slides into the yoke
body so that the retainer holes in the yoke body are aligned with the groove in the
adapter.
4. Install the hair pin retainer in the holes and bend the ends over.
5. Tighten the push rod locknut against the flat washer. Torque locknut as follows:
1/2 - 20 push rod – 300-400 in. lbs.
5/8 - 18 push rod – 400-600 in. lbs.
6. MANUALLY ADJUST BRAKES.
NOTE: For further information, refer to Service Data Sheet SD-05-2.
