This manual is written accordingly to the normative UNI 10653 – UNI 10893 – CEI EN 61187.
1.1 WARRANTY
This instrument is covered by warranty for all manufacturing defects.
Please read the Warranty Certificate at the end of this manual.
1.2 CE MARKING
This instrument is in compliance with the European Union directives :
- 73/23/EEC (Low Voltage Directive) amended by 93/68/EEC.
- 89/336/EEC (Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive) amended by 92/31/EEC and 92/68/EEC.
The marking is placed both on the instrument packaging and on the serial number label attached
to the instrument.

Also, B&C Electronics offers to all Clients the possibility of sending instruments to the manufacturing
headquarter, in Italy, for repairs.

2 MEASURING SYSTEM
The measuring system is composed by the instrument AF511.2 and by an electric conductivity probe,
which characteristics are defined by the user in accordance with the specific applications.
The 2 electrodes sensor, for example, can be made with a metallic pole in the fermenter and a mass
connection in the liquid.
2.1 FUNCTIONS
This instrument, connected with a suitable sensor, performs the following:
- it detects foam in the fermenters. The instrument points out the presence of foam when the
probe’s metallic pole is in contact with it;
- it activates the anti-foam devices or it controls the level in continuous cultures by means of a
set-point;
- it shows the conductivity value measured by the probe.
2.2 ACCESSORIES AND OPTIONS
In order to operate, the instrument requires a conductivity probe, which is not included and it must be
ordered separately.
All available options for this instrument are described in Chapter 3.2 “Technical specifications”.

3 SPECIFICATIONS
3.1 FUNCTIONAL SPECIFICATIONS
Display
On the 11 segments display 1 (Fig.1), the instrument shows the value of conductivity given by the
contact between the probe and the liquid or foam.
The measuring scale is in %; the end of the scale corresponds to a conductivity value of 100 µS,
while the center of the scale corresponds to a conductivity value of 10 µS.
The beginning of the scale corresponds to the display turned off completely.
Zero adjustment
Zero adjustment is done with the trimmer 2 , placed on the front panel.
Sensitivity adjustment
Sensitivity adjustment is done by means of trimmer 3, placed on the front panel.
If necessary, it is possible to make a wider sensitivity adjustment by means of trimmer R74 marked
“K adj” and placed on the rear panel.
Set point adjustment
The instrument has a set-point that can be adjusted along the complete measuring scale, and that can
activate an output relay, pointed out by the red LED 7.

Relay delay
The relay of the regulator can be activated with an adjustable delay from 0 to 5 seconds by means of
trimmer R14 marked “DEL B “ and placed by the rear terminal block.

3.3 PHYSICAL SPECIFICATIONS
The instrument is designed for panel mounting.
It consists of a metallic case with an epoxy paint.
The front panel is in anodized aluminium covered by a polycarbonate label.
Fig. 3 shows the physical details, dimensions and drill plan of this case.
Connections to the power supply, loads, recorders and probes are made by means of a detachable
terminal block on the rear side.

4 ISTRUZIONI PER L’UTILIZZO
4.1 PACKAGE LIST
The instrument includes:
- N° 1 instrument with label reporting marking and serial number;
- N° 1 screwdriver;
- N° 1 fuse for power at 220 volt;
- N° 2 fuses for power at 110 volt;
- N° 1 operator’s manual with warranty certificate and repair service data sheet.
4.2 PACKING AND UNPACKING
Open the carton box and pull out the instrument in the clear plastic envelope. Keep the carton box, the
screwdriver and the fuses.
In order to pack the instrument correctly, please follow these directions backwards.
4.3 STOCKING AND SHIPPING
If you need to keep the instrument in a stock room for a long period of time, please make sure it stays
in a dry place.
For shipping, place it in the carton box as described in the previous chapter.
4.4 DISPOSAL
In case you will have to dispose of the instrument, please follow all rules and regulations describing
how to discard goods that contain circuits and electronic components.

4.5 PHYSICAL INSTALLATION
4.5.1 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The instrument can be installed near the sensor or at distance, in the switch board, away from potential
crashes and corrosive fumes.
Room temperature and humidity may not exceed the maximum values described in Charter 3.2
“Technical specifications”.
It is the operator’s duty to verify that the installation is in accordance with the local regulations.
4.5.2 MOUNTING
The instrument must be panel mounted on a rigid surface and in accordance with the measures
reported in Fig.3.
The instrument can also be mounted in a case with IP65 protection (for example the BC931.1,
available in the B&C Electronics catalogue).
The sensor must be installed in vertical position with the lower end corresponding to the level of foam
that the operator wishes to control.
4.5.3 ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION
Electrical installation consists of:
- connecting the power supply to the instrument;
- connecting the sensor to the instrument;
- connecting alarms, pumps and valves if necessary.
The connections to the controller are made on terminal blocks located on the rear side.
The power and output connections are made at the 14 pin terminal block.
The input signal connections are made at the 4 pin terminal block.
Do not power the instrument while doing the following:
- connecting sensors and others;
- maintenance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Before connecting the system to the power supply check the following:
- check that all connections to the instrument are made to the terminal blocks marked with the value
of power supplied (110 V or 220 V);
- check that terminal 1 is connected to the ground and that all connections are correct;
- check that all connections to the terminal blocks are well done;
- the instrument is supplied with the fuse for 220 volt.
Replace the fuse with the right one to power at 110 volt where necessary, as described in
Chapter 4.8 “Maintenance”
All damages caused by faulty connections during installation are not covered by warranty.

Connecting the power supply
- connect ground to terminal 1
- connect the 110 Vac power to 2 - 3 terminals
- connect the 220 Vac power to 2 - 4 terminals
- use 32 mA T fuse for 220 Vac power
- use 80 mA T fuse for 110 Vac power
- power the device by means of an isolation transformer
- avoid main voltage from an auto-transformer
- avoid main voltage from a point with heavy inductive loads
- separate power supply wires from signal wires
- control that the main voltage value id correct
Connecting the sensor
The sensor cabling is a critical part for the better functioning of the whole system.
- use cables without interruptions between sensor and instrument. In case of cable interruption,
use high insulation terminals;
- keep the cable away from power wires on the overall length.
Connect the sensor between terminals 29 and 31.
Connecting alarms, pumps, valves
The output connection is made at the rear terminal block and it consists of relay contacts
corresponding to the regulator “B”.

The relay output consists of voltage free contacts.
We suggest to protect the contacts by an external fuse in case of short circuit on the load.
The action of the relay may be delayed from 0 to 5 seconds by means of the rear trimmer marked
“DEL B”.

4.6 OPERATING THE SYSTEM
System controls
The system controls are described in Fig.1.
- the general switch 5 is to torn ON and OFF the instrument;
- the knob 8 is to define the correspondent set-point.
Pre-operation check
On the front panel of the instrument are located all the indications necessary to all functioning
preliminary checks.
The green LED 4 indicates that the unit is turned ON and that all circuits are properly functioning.
The controllers' cards are pre-adjusted at the factory; if the sensor is connected correctly, as described
earlier, the system should then function correctly.
If necessary, the zero and sensitivity calibration shall be done by means of trimmer 2 and 3.
The trimmer R74 marked “K adj” placed in the instrument rear-end can be used for the coarse
sensitivity adjustment.
The regulator features the set-point check by red Leds 7 which is a part of the circuitry powering the
relay.
When the monitored value is above the set-point, the Led of the regulator is alight and the
corresponding relay is activated.
When the sensor is submersed in the liquid, the display will not have any LED lit.
If one or more display’s LED is lit, it will be necessary to regulate the trimmer of zero until
they turn off, as indicated in Chapter 4.7 “Calibration”.

With the laboratory setting, the regulator has MAXIMUM function.
In this configuration the relay is activated when the value of conductivity exceeds the set value value.
In this case the LED 7 is lit.
Operation
In order to start the installed system according to the above indications, operators must move the
general switch 5 in position I , and wait for the display’s LED 1, indicating the conductivity value of
the liquid or of the testing foam, to be turned on.

4.7 CALIBRATION
The instrument is supplied with a laboratory calibration done by electric resistances that simulate the
sensor response when in contact with the foam.
The values of this calibration are the following:
1 µS switching on 2° LED of the bar graph
10 µS switching on from 2° to 6° LED of the bar graph
100 µS switching on from 2° to 11° LED of the bar graph
When the cell is not in touch with foam, all LED are turned off.
Zero calibration
When the cell is connected to the instrument a "zero" calibration may be required in order to
compensate the residual conductivity of the connecting cable.
The correction becomes necessary when some indicator’s LED remain turned on even if there is not
any contact between the sensor and the foam.
Keep the cell dry and not in contact with foam, rotate counterclockwise trimmer 2 marked "zero". Stop
the rotation as soon as the second segment of the bar graph turns off.
Sensitivity calibration
Sensitivity calibration becomes necessary when the signal given by the sensor in contact with the foam
is not able to turn on a sufficient number of LED.
Sensitivity is adjusted with trimmer 3 marked "sens", and if necessary, with the coarse sensitivity
trimmer of on the rear, marked “adj K”.

4.8 MAINTENANCE
Thanks to the quality components used, the controller AF511.2 is highly reliable.
If properly installed, the instrument does not need any particular maintenance.
If the green LED 4 does not lit, check for the presence of the power supply and the fuse placed in the
rear of the instrument on the left side of the terminal blocks.
Disconnect the power supply to the monitor before performing the following
procedures:
- removing dust from terminal blocks and printed circuit board;
- operating on terminal blocks connection cables;
- mounting the instrument on the panel;
- replacing the fuse
The state of the cell's surface is critical for the normal operation of the system.
In order to assure a good contact with the liquid, please make sure to follow all maintenance
operations suggested by the sensor’s manufacturer.

WARRANTY
CERTIFICATE
1) This instrument is guaranteed for 5 years from the day you purchased, for any damage
caused by manufacturing defects.
2) The warranty is not valid in case of tampering, wear and tear caused by a faulty installation
or maintenance.
3) The warranty includes only the repair of the instrument at no charge at the Laboratories of
the manufacturer.
4) B&C Electronics is not responsible of damages caused by the usage of its instruments.
REPAIRS
1) Instruments that need to be repaired must be shipped pre-paid to B&C Electronics.
2) In order to efficiently help you solve your problem, we suggest you ship the instrument
along with the Technical Support’s data sheet (here below) and an order for repair.
3) In order to quickly ship the repaired instrument back to the Client, unless differently
required by the Client itself, shipment will be freight collect and through the Customer’s
usual forwarder.
4) All extra expenses that have not been previously discussed will be charged to the Client.
5) In case the Client will ask for an estimate quotation and later decide not to repair the
instrument, B&C will ask for a lump-sum payment to cover labour expenses.
