Accessthedevice

1.OpenabrowserandentertheIPaddressorhostnameoftheAxisdevice.

IfyouhaveaMaccomputer(OSX),gotoSafari,clickonBonjourandselectthedevicefromthedrop-downlist.Toadd Bonjourasabrowserbookmark,gotoSafari>Preferences.

IfyoudonotknowtheIPaddress,useAXISIPUtilityorAXISDeviceManagertondthedeviceonthenetwork.

2.Entertheusernameandpassword.Ifyouaccessthedeviceforthersttime,youmustsettherootpassword.See Setasecurepasswordfortherootaccountonpage5.

Aboutsecurepasswords

Important

Axisdevicessendtheinitiallysetpasswordincleartextoverthenetwork.Toprotectyourdeviceaftertherstlogin,set upasecureandencryptedHTTPSconnectionandthenchangethepassword.

Thedevicepasswordistheprimaryprotectionforyourdataandservices.Axisdevicesdonotimposeapasswordpolicyasthey maybeusedinvarioustypesofinstallations.

Toprotectyourdatawestronglyrecommendthatyou:

•Useapasswordwithatleast8characters,preferablycreatedbyapasswordgenerator.

•Don’texposethepassword.

•Changethepasswordatarecurringinterval,atleastonceayear.

Setasecurepasswordfortherootaccount

Important

Thedefaultadministratorusernameisroot.Ifthepasswordforrootislost,resetthedevicetofactorydefaultsettings.

Imagequality

Selectexposuremode

Therearedifferentexposuremodeoptionsinthecamerathatadjustsaperture,shutterspeed,andgaintoimproveimagequalityfor specicsurveillancescenes.GotoSettings>Image>Exposureandselectbetweenthefollowingexposuremodes:

•Formostusecases,selectAutomaticexposure.

•Forenvironmentswithcertainarticiallighting,forexampleuorescentlighting,selectFlicker-free.

•Forenvironmentswithcertainarticiallightandbrightlight,forexampleoutdoorswithuorescentlightingatnightand sunduringdaytime,selectFlicker-reduced.

•Tolockthecurrentexposuresettings,selectHoldcurrent.

Viewarea

Aviewareaisacroppedpartofthefullview.Youcanstreamandstoreviewareasinsteadofthefullviewtominimizebandwidth andstorageneeds.IfyouenablePTZforaviewarea,youcanpan,tiltandzoomwithinit.Byusingviewareasyoucanremoveparts ofthefullview,forexample,thesky.

Whenyousetupaviewarea,werecommendyoutosetthevideostreamresolutiontothesamesizeasorsmallerthantheviewarea size.Ifyousetthevideostreamresolutionlargerthantheviewareasizeitimpliesdigitallyscaledupvideoaftersensorcapture, whichrequiresmorebandwidthwithoutaddingimageinformation.

Hidepartsoftheimagewithprivacymasks

Whatisaprivacymask?

Aprivacymaskisauser-denedareathatpreventsusersfromviewingapartofthemonitoredarea.Inthevideostream,privacy masksappearasblocksofsolidcolor.

You’llseetheprivacymaskonallsnapshots,recordedvideo,andlivestreams.

YoucanusetheVAPIX®applicationprogramminginterface(API)toturnofftheprivacymasks.

Usingmultipleprivacymasksmayaffecttheproduct’sperformance.

Createaprivacymask

Tocreateaprivacymask,gotoSettings>Privacymask.

Improvefacialrecognition

Tobetterrecognizethefaceofapersonpassingbythecamera,youcansettheoptimalpixelresolutionwiththecamera’spixel counter.

1.GotoSettings>System>Orientationandclick.

2.Adjustthesizeandplacementoftherectangleinthecamera’sliveviewaroundtheareaofinterest,forexamplewhere thefacesofpassingpersonsareexpectedtoappear.Youcanthenseethenumberofpixelsrepresentedbythesidesof therectangle.

Note

Youcanuseanobjectofaknownsizeintheviewasareferencetodecidehowmuchresolutionisneededforrecognition.

Reducenoiseinlow-lightconditions

Toreducenoiseinlow-lightconditions,youcanadjustoneormoreofthefollowingsettings:

•Settheexposuremodetoautomatic.

Note

Ahighmaxshuttervaluecanresultinmotionblur.

•Toslowdowntheshutterspeed,setmaxshuttertothehighestpossiblevalue.

•Reducesharpnessintheimage.

Handlesceneswithstrongbacklight

Dynamicrangeisthedifferenceinlightlevelsinanimage.Insomecasesthedifferencebetweenthedarkestandthebrightest areascanbesignicant.Theresultisoftenanimagewhereeitherthedarkorthebrightareasarevisible.Widedynamicrange (WDR)makesbothdarkandbrightareasoftheimagevisible.

Streamingandstorage

Choosevideocompressionformat

Decidewhichcompressionmethodtousebasedonyourviewingrequirements,andonthepropertiesofyournetwork.The availableoptionsare:

MotionJPEG

MotionJPEGorMJPEGisadigitalvideosequencethatismadeupofaseriesofindividualJPEGimages.Theseimagesarethen displayedandupdatedataratesufcienttocreateastreamthatshowsconstantlyupdatedmotion.Fortheviewertoperceivemotion videotheratemustbeatleast16imageframespersecond.Fullmotionvideoisperceivedat30(NTSC)or25(PAL)framespersecond.

TheMotionJPEGstreamusesconsiderableamountsofbandwidth,butprovidesexcellentimagequalityandaccesstoeveryimage containedinthestream.

H.264orMPEG-4Part10/AVC

Note

H.264isalicensedtechnology.TheAxisproductincludesoneH.264viewingclientlicense.Installingadditionalunlicensed copiesoftheclientisprohibited.Topurchaseadditionallicenses,contactyourAxisreseller.

H.264can,withoutcompromisingimagequality,reducethesizeofadigitalvideolebymorethan80%comparedtotheMotion JPEGformatandbyasmuchas50%comparedtotheMPEG-4standard.Thismeansthatlessnetworkbandwidthandstoragespace arerequiredforavideole.Orseenanotherway,highervideoqualitycanbeachievedforagivenbitrate.

4.Enterthenameofthesharedlocationonthehostserver .

5.Movetheswitchifthesharerequiresalogin,andenterusernameandpassword.

6.ClickConnect.

Events

Rulesandalerts

Youcancreaterulestomakeyourdeviceperformanactionwhencertaineventsoccur.Aruleconsistsofconditionsandactions. Theconditionscanbeusedtotriggertheactions.Forexample,thedevicecanstartarecordingorsendanemailwhenitdetects motion,orshowanoverlaytextwhenitrecords.

Triggeranaction

1.GotoSettings>System>Eventstosetuparule.Theruledeneswhenthecamerawillperformcertainactions.Rules canbesetupasscheduled,recurring,orforexample,triggeredbymotiondetection.

2.SelecttheConditionthatmustbemettotriggertheaction.Ifyouspecifymorethanoneconditionfortherule,allofthe conditionsmustbemettotriggertheaction.

3.SelectwhichActionthecamerashouldperformwhentheconditionsaremet.

Ifyoumakechangestoanactiverule,thentheruleneedstoberestartedforthechangestotakeeffect.

Recordvideowhenthecameradetectsmotion

ThisexampleexplainshowtosetupthecameratostartrecordingtotheSDcardvesecondsbeforeitdetectsmotionandto stoponeminuteafter.

MakesuretheAXISVideoMotionDetectionapplicationisrunning:

1.GotoSettings>Apps>AXISVideoMotionDetection.

2.Starttheapplicationifitisnotalreadyrunning.

EventhoughyourAxisnetworkvideoproducthasnobuilt-inaudiocapability,itisstillpossibletoaddthisfunctionality,byusinga productfromtheAXIST61SeriesAudioandI/OInterface(suppliedseparately),whicheffectivelyprovidesmicrophonecapability whereitdoesnotexist.

ThissetuprequirestheAXIST61Seriesproduct(2)tobeconnectedbetweenyourAxisnetworkvideodevice(1)andthePoE switch(3)providingpower.

Oncethevariousdevicesarecorrectlyconnected,therewillbeanaudiotabinthesettingsforyourAxisnetworkvideoproduct.

TheAXIST61Seriesproductcanbeusedtogoodeffectinsituationssuchasinterviewrooms.TheAxisnetworkvideoproductis mountedonthewallorceilingtogivegoodvisualcoverage,whiletheAXIST61Seriesproductcanbemounted,forexample,onor abovetheinterviewtable.

Resettofactorydefaultsettings

Important

Resettofactorydefaultshouldbeusedwithcaution.Aresettofactorydefaultresetsallsettings,includingtheIPaddress,to thefactorydefaultvalues.

Toresettheproducttothefactorydefaultsettings:

1.Disconnectpowerfromtheproduct.

2.Pressandholdthecontrolbuttonwhilereconnectingpower.SeeProductoverviewonpage4.

3.Keepthecontrolbuttonpressedfor15–30secondsuntilthestatusLEDindicatorashesamber.

4.Releasethecontrolbutton.TheprocessiscompletewhenthestatusLEDindicatorturnsgreen.Theproducthasbeenreset tothefactorydefaultsettings.IfnoDHCPserverisavailableonthenetwork,thedefaultIPaddressis192.168.0.90

5.UsetheinstallationandmanagementsoftwaretoolstoassignanIPaddress,setthepassword,andaccessthevideostream.

Firmwareisthesoftwarethatdeterminesthefunctionalityofnetworkdevices.Oneofyourrstactionswhentroubleshootinga problemshouldbetocheckthecurrentrmwareversion.Thelatestversionmaycontainacorrectionthatxesyourparticular problem.

Upgradethermware

Important

Problemsupgradingthermware

FirmwareupgradefailureIfthermwareupgradefails,thedevicereloadsthepreviousrmware.Themostcommonreason

ProblemssettingtheIPaddress

Thedeviceislocatedona differentsubnet

TheIPaddressisbeingused byanotherdevice

isthatthewrongrmwarelehasbeenuploaded.Checkthatthenameofthermwarele correspondstoyourdeviceandtryagain.

IftheIPaddressintendedforthedeviceandtheIPaddressofthecomputerusedtoaccessthe devicearelocatedondifferentsubnets,youcannotsettheIPaddress.Contactyournetwork administratortoobtainanIPaddress.

DisconnecttheAxisdevicefromthenetwork.Runthepingcommand(inaCommand/DOSwindow, typepingandtheIPaddressofthedevice):

•Ifyoureceive:Replyfrom<IPaddress>:bytes=32;time=10... thismeansthattheIPaddressmayalreadybeinusebyanotherdeviceonthenetwork. ObtainanewIPaddressfromthenetworkadministratorandreinstallthedevice.

•Ifyoureceive:Requesttimedout,thismeansthattheIPaddressisavailable forusewiththeAxisdevice.Checkallcablingandreinstallthedevice.

ThestaticIPaddressintheAxisdeviceisusedbeforetheDHCPserversetsadynamicaddress. ThismeansthatifthesamedefaultstaticIPaddressisalsousedbyanotherdevice,theremay beproblemsaccessingthedevice.

WhenHTTPSisenabled,ensurethatthecorrectprotocol(HTTPorHTTPS)isusedwhenattempting tologin.Youmayneedtomanuallytypehttporhttpsinthebrowser’saddresseld.

Ifthepasswordfortheuserrootislost,thedevicemustberesettothefactorydefaultsettings. SeeResettofactorydefaultsettingsonpage13.

IPaddressesobtainedfromaDHCPserveraredynamicandmaychange.IftheIPaddresshasbeen changed,useAXISIPUtilityorAXISDeviceManagertolocatethedeviceonthenetwork.Identify thedeviceusingitsmodelorserialnumber,orbytheDNSname(ifthenamehasbeencongured).

Lowerframeratethan expected

Checkifyourroutersupportsmulticasting,oriftheroutersettingsbetweentheclientandthe deviceneedtobecongured.TheTTL(TimeToLive)valuemayneedtobeincreased.

CheckwithyournetworkadministratorthatthemulticastaddressesusedbytheAxisdevice arevalidforyournetwork.

Checkwithyournetworkadministratortoseeifthereisarewallpreventingviewing.

Ensurethatyourgraphicscardisusingthelatestdriver .Thelatestdriverscanusuallybe downloadedfromthemanufacturer’swebsite.

Modifythesettingsforyourgraphicsadapter.Gototheadapter’sdocumentationformore information.

•SeePerformanceconsiderationsonpage15.

•Reducethenumberofapplicationsrunningontheclientcomputer.

•Limitthenumberofsimultaneousviewers.

Problemsretrievingadditionalvideostreams

‘VideoError’displayedin AXISCompanion,or

‘Stream:Error.Something wentwrong.Maybethere aretoomanyviewers.’in Chrome/Firefox,or

‘503serviceunavailable’ errorinQuickTime,or

‘Cameranot available’displayedin AXISCameraStation,or

‘Errorreadingvideostream’ messageinbrowserwhen usingtheJavaapplet

Thiscameraisdesignedtodeliveruptofourdifferentstreams.Ifafthuniquestreamisrequested, thecamerawillnotbeabletoprovideit,andanerrormessageisdisplayed.Theerrormessage dependsonthewaythestreamisrequested.Thestreamsareusedonarstcome,rstserved basis.Examplesofinstancesusingastreamare:

•Liveviewinginawebbrowserorotherapplication

•Whilerecording-continuousormotiontriggeredrecording

•Aneventusingimagesonthecamera,forexampleaneventsendingane-mailwithan imageeveryhour

•Aninstalledandrunningapplication,suchasAXISVideoMotionDetection,willalways consumeavideostream,whetheritisusedornot.Astoppedapplicationdoesnot consumeavideostream.

Thecameracandelivermorethanfoursimultaneousstreamsprovidedthecongurationofany additionalstreamisidenticaltoanyoftherstfourstreams.Identicalcongurationimpliesexactly thesameresolution,framerate,compression,videoformat,rotationetc.Formoreinformationsee thewhitepaper“Maxnumberofuniquevideostreamcongurations”,availableataxis.com

Performanceconsiderations

Whensettingupyoursystem,itisimportanttoconsiderhowvarioussettingsandsituationsaffecttheperformance.Somefactors affecttheamountofbandwidth(thebitrate)required,otherscanaffecttheframerate,andsomeaffectboth.Iftheloadonthe CPUreachesitsmaximum,thisalsoaffectstheframerate.

Thefollowingfactorsarethemostimportanttoconsider:

•Highimageresolutionorlowercompressionlevelsresultinimagescontainingmoredatawhichinturnaffectsthe bandwidth.

•RotatingthelensmanuallywillresultinbetterperformancecomparedtorotatingtheimagefromtheGUI.

•AccessbylargenumbersofMotionJPEGorunicastH.264clientsaffectsthebandwidth.

•Simultaneousviewingofdifferentstreams(resolution,compression)bydifferentclientsaffectsbothframerateand bandwidth.

Useidenticalstreamswhereverpossibletomaintainahighframerate.Streamprolescanbeusedtoensurethat streamsareidentical.

•AccessingMotionJPEGandH.264videostreamssimultaneouslyaffectsbothframerateandbandwidth.

•Heavyusageofeventsettingsaffectstheproduct’sCPUloadwhichinturnaffectstheframerate.

•UsingHTTPSmayreduceframerate,inparticularifstreamingMotionJPEG.
