FRITZ!Box Fon is a Private Branch Exchange (PBX) for making
telephone calls via the Internet and the fixed-line network.
FRITZ!Box Fon connects one or more computers directly with
your DSL line. Each connected computer can establish an Internet connection over FRITZ!Box Fon.
Possibilities for connecting FRITZ!Box Fon
PBX for Internet and Fixed-Line Telephony
FRITZ!Box Fon is a two-port PBX for the connection of analog
terminal devices. This means that you can connect two analog telephones to FRITZ!Box Fon and make phone calls via
the Internet, ISDN, or the analog fixed-line network.
Connecting One or More Computers
FRITZ!Box Fon offers one USB port and one LAN port for connecting computers. This means you can connect two computers directly to FRITZ!Box Fon. To connect even more computers, a network hub or network switch can be connected to
the LAN port.

All computers connected to FRITZ!Box Fon are networked together and can access shared files and printers.
Internet Connection for All Connected Computers
All of the computers connected to FRITZ!Box Fon can access
the Internet. There are two different ways of establishing an
Internet connection. Both cases require Internet account information from an Internet Service Provider:
zThe Internet connection is established by FRITZ!Box
zThe computers connected establish the Internet

In order to operate FRITZ!Box Fon, you must have the following:

All steps required for connecting and installing the system
are described here in the manual and in the Installation Help
on the FRITZ!Box Fon CD. Insert the FRITZ!Box Fon CD in your
CD-ROM drive so that you can follow the installation instructions on the screen. The Installation Help starts automatically. If the Installation Help is not displayed automatically,
open the INTRO.HTML file on the FRITZ!Box Fon CD. Follow
the instructions in the Installation Help to install FRITZ!Box
Fon at your computer’s USB port.
If you would like to connect and install FRITZ!Box Fon without
this Installation Help, see the instructions in the following
sections.
2.1Mounting FRITZ!Box Fon
Set or hang up FRITZ!Box Fon in a dry, dust-free location
shaded from any direct sunlight. If you would like to connect
the device using the USB or network cable supplied with the
package, remember to consider the length of the cable and
select a location close to your computer.

Power Supply
Perform the following steps to connect FRITZ!Box Fon to the
power supply:
1.Position your FRITZ!Box Fon so that the sockets on the
back panel are facing you.
2.Remove the power supply unit from the package.
3.Connect the mains adapter to the socket labeled “Pow-
er”, located at the far right of the back panel of
FRITZ!Box Fon.
4.Plug the other end into an AC power outlet.

5.The green “Power” LED will begin flashing after a few
seconds.

Perform the following steps to connect FRITZ!Box Fon to DSL:
1.Pick up the grey cable.
2.Connect one end of the cable to the socket labeled
“DSL”, located at the far left of the back panel of
FRITZ!Box Fon.
3.Then connect the other end of the cable to the socket
on the DSL splitter labeled “DSL”. If the end of the DSL
cable does not fit into the splitter socket, insert the end
of the DSL cable into the gray RJ45-RJ11 adapter supplied in the package. Then insert the adapter plug into
the DSL splitter socket.

4.The green “Power” LED stops flashing after a short time
and remains lit to signalize that FRITZ!Box Fon is ready
for Internet connections over DSL.

FRITZ!Box Fon can be connected to an ISDN or an analog telephone line. To establish a connection, perform the following
steps:
1.Pick up the black cable.
2.Connect one end of the cable to the socket on FRITZ!Box
Fon labeled “ISDN/analog”.
3.If you have an ISDN access, connect the other end of
the cable to the socket of your ISDN network terminator
(NT).

If you have only one analog telephone line along with a
DSL line, connect the other end of the cable to the black
adapter for your telephone jack included in the package. Then use the adapter to connect FRITZ!Box Fon to
the socket of your DSL splitter.

to FRITZ!Box Fon
FRITZ!Box Fon has been tested and CE-certified in accordance with European Union directives. All analog telecommunication devices with CE certification can be connected to
its extensions.
To connect analog terminal devices like a telephone, fax device or answering machine, insert the plugs of your analog
devices into the “FON1” or “FON2” socket on FRITZ!Box Fon.

FRITZ!Box Fon can be connected to a computer in two different ways:
zvia the network port (LAN port)
zvia the USB port
A computer can be connected to FRITZ!Box Fon by means of
only one of these ports.
If you would like to connect several computers to FRITZ!Box
Fon at the same time, you have the following possibilities:
zTwo computers can be connected to FRITZ!Box Fon at
the same time using the USB port and the network port.
zA network hub or network switch can be connected to
the FRITZ!Box Fon LAN port to make all FRITZ!Box Fon
features available to several computers or an entire network.

Connecting FRITZ!Box Fon to the LAN Port
Please note:
zIf you would like to connect FRITZ!Box Fon to your com-
puter by means of the LAN port, first make sure that
your computer is equipped with a LAN port. A LAN port
is usually designated by the icon at left or labeled
“LAN”.
zIf your computer is not equipped with a LAN port, con-
nect FRITZ!Box Fon using the USB port. If you would like
to connect FRITZ!Box Fon to your computer with a Windows operating system using a USB cable, you must install the driver software from the FRITZ!Box Fon CD on
the computer.
An operating system version of 10.3.3 or higher is
required to connect FRITZ!Box Fon to the USB port of an
Apple Macintosh computer. If your Apple Macintosh
computer works with an older version, connect
FRITZ!Box Fon via the LAN port of your computer.
2.7Connecting FRITZ!Box Fon to the LAN
Port
Using a LAN cable, FRITZ!Box Fon can be connected to the
computer in just a few steps. If you would like to connect a
network to FRITZ!Box Fon in order to connect several computers with DSL, then connect FRITZ!Box Fon to a network hub or
switch using the LAN cable.
Connection via the LAN port is identical for all operating systems. All computers connected via the LAN port must be
equipped with a network adapter (Ethernet card).

1.Once the FRITZ!Box Fon has been connected to the power mains and DSL as described on page 16, switch on
your computer.
If you work with a Linux operating system, use YaST to
configure your network card with the setting “DHCP”, if
this setting is not already configured.
2.Insert one end of the red LAN cable to the computer’s
network adapter.
3.Connect the other end of the LAN cable to the socket on
FRITZ!Box Fon labeled “LAN”.
4.Please see the instructions in the section “Opening the
User Interface” on page 30.
No additional driver installation is necessary on the computer.

FRITZ!Box Fon can be connected to a computer with the USB
cable in a few easy steps. First read the instructions in the
next section, “Connecting the USB Cable”, and then see the
section describing installation in your operating system.
An operating system version of 10.3.3 or higher is required
to connect FRITZ!Box Fon to the USB port of an Apple Macintosh computer! If your Apple Macintosh computer works
with an older version, connect FRITZ!Box Fon via the LAN port
of your computer.
Connecting the USB Cable
You will need the white USB cable for this step. In the
Windows operating systems, the FRITZ!Box Fon CD is also required for driver installation. No driver installation is necessary in the operating systems Mac OS X and Linux.
1.Once the FRITZ!Box Fon has been connected to the pow-
er mains and DSL as described on page 16, switch on
your computer.
2.If a Windows operating system is installed on the com-
puter, insert the FRITZ!Box Fon CD now.
No CD is required for the Mac OS X and Linux operating
systems.
3.Connect FRITZ!Box Fon to the USB port. The USB cable
has two different connectors: one is flat and rectangular
and the other is square.

4.Pick up the USB cable and plug the flat connector into a
free USB port on your computer.
5.Then plug the square connector into the socket labeled
“” on FRITZ!Box Fon.
FRITZ!Box Fon and your computer are now connected
over the USB cable.
6.Continue with installation as described in the following
sections. Select the section that describes the next
steps for the operating system installed on your computer.
In some Windows operating systems the display of menus
and folders can be changed. The following instructions are
based on the standard installation of each operating system.

Administrator rights are required to install the driver software in Windows XP.
1.The Windows XP “Found New Hardware Wizard” starts.
Follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
2.A message appears: “The wizard has finished installing
the software for ‘AVM FRITZ!Box Fon’”. Confirm by clicking “Finish”.
3.Please see the instructions in the section “Opening the
User Interface” on page 30.
Installing FRITZ!Box Fon in Windows Me
1.Windows Me detects a new plug-and-play device to be
installed. Follow the instructions displayed on the
screen.
Keep your Windows CD ready.
2.When asked: “What would you like to do?”, select the
option “Automatic search for a better driver (Recommended).”.
The drivers for FRITZ!Box Fon are installed.
3.Conclude the installation by clicking “Finish”.
4.Please see the instructions in the section “Opening the
User Interface” on page 30.
Installing FRITZ!Box Fon in Windows 2000
Administrator rights are required to install the driver software in Windows 2000.
1.The Windows 2000 “Found New Hardware Wizard”
starts automatically. Follow the instructions displayed
on the screen.
2.When asked “What do you want Windows to do?”, select the option “Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended).”. Confirm with “Next”.

3.In the next window, select “CD-ROM drives” as the
source for the driver files. Confirm with “Next”.
4.The program reports that a driver was found. Click

5.Once the files have been copied onto your computer,
conclude this step of installation by clicking “Finish”.
6.Please see the instructions in the section “Opening the
User Interface” on page 30.
Installing FRITZ!Box Fon in Windows 98
Insert the FRITZ!Box Fon CD in your CD-ROM drive to start the
Installation Help automatically. If the Installation Help does
not start automatically, open the INTRO.HTM file on the
FRITZ!Box Fon CD. Follow the instructions in the Installation
Help to install FRITZ!Box Fon at your computer’s USB port.
If you would like to install FRITZ!Box Fon without this Installation Help, first follow the instructions in the section “Connecting the USB Cable” and then perform the following
steps:
1.Windows 98 detects a new plug-and-play device to be
installed. Follow the instructions displayed on the
screen.
Keep your Windows CD ready.
2.When asked: “What do you want Windows to do?”, select the option “Search for the best driver for your device. (Recommended).”
