General Information
The Model 1172BK Multi-Zone Audio Router is a companion product to the
AVAtrix™ HD Cat 5 Routing System. It provides six analog or digital audio source
outputs to a whole-house audio system to enable coordination of a room’s audio
program with the video program being received on a Cat 5 wallplate/receiver
(9878, 9879, or 9880). The Model 1172BK’s audio outputs, taken from audio/video
sources resident on the AVAtrix, thus complement other audio-only sources directly connected to the audio distribution system.
Source Mode and Tracking Mode
• Source Mode: The audio output from each source connected to the AVAtrix is
looped out to the corresponding audio output on the 1172BK. (Example: Source
1 audio is replicated on 1172BK’s Output 1). This allows audio to remain live at
each in-room Cat 5 receiver, while also interfacing to a third party whole house
audio control system for further processing, amplification, and room selection.
• Tracking Mode: The audio output from the source currently selected on the
AVAtrix in a zone is routed to the corresponding audio output on the 1172BK.
(Example: Zone 2 is viewing Source 4 - the 1172BK would output Source 4
audio from its Output 2). The output from the 1172BK can then be connected to
a separate dedicated amplifier, used to drive speakers in that zone. This allows
audio to be switched in sync with the video source being viewed in each zone.

Installation Instructions
These instructions address the Model 1172BK, which is always used with an AVAtrix™ system. The system must include
either a Model AVM-562 or Model AVX-562 with Model 9878, 9879 or 9880 Cat 5 zone receivers, and can also include
Model 1176BK matrix expander(s). Refer to the AVAtrix instruction manual for complete installation and setup directions.
The 1172BK provides an audio breakout point to connect an independent audio distribution system of any brand that
accepts stereo analog audio or digital audio. It can be used in two different ways; Source Mode, with an advanced audio
system having its own integrated switching, and Tracking Mode, with an audio system employing dedicated amplifiers for
each room or zone.
• In Source Mode, each 1172BK output always provides the audio signal from its corresponding source input on the
AVAtrix (e.g. source 1 audio is always available on 1172BK output 1).
• In Tracking Mode, each 1172BK output switches its content along with the AVAtrix so that the audio distribution
system’s output automatically matches what is playing on the video display in each room.
• Both modes allow for infrared communication from the AVAtrix Cat 5 receivers in each room back to a whole house
audio system.
Source Mode
In this mode the unswitched audio channels of the six AVAtrix system A/V sources are provided as inputs to the audio distribution system. The Model 1172BK is therefore not associated with any Model 1176BK, so only one 1172BK is necessary
even when there are multiple 1176BKs in the system as shown in the table below.

1. Install the Model 1172BK anywhere in the AVAtrix stack and set its address dial to the “M” position.
2. Connect the desired audio outputs, which represent the six AVAtrix A/V sources, to audio input channels on the wholehouse audio system.
3. Audio system infrared outputs, if present, are intended to control its input sources. Plug a stick-on IR emitter into
each of the audio system’s IR output jacks and apply the emitter to the corresponding AVAtrix A/V source. In this way,
source control commands originating in each room are routed by the audio system via infrared to the relevant source.
In Source Mode installations, AVAtrix IR commands must be routed through the Cat 5 receiver, necessitating two IR
receivers in rooms with both A/V Cat 5 receivers and room audio service. See the Source Mode Hookup Diagram on the
facing page.
Source Mode User Instructions
Depending on the installation, you will use a wall-mounted controller or an infrared or wireless controller to select which
music from various audio-only or audio/video sources you wish to enjoy. Your installer will have connected the AVAtrix
System and your whole-house or room audio system to work together, enabling you to bring the pictures and sound you
desire to each location in your home.
Source mode is used with a whole-house audio system such as Russound CAA66 that includes its own switching. The
1172BK audio output #1 always provides the audio from Source 1.
Note: In addition to the whole house audio
distribution, a digital home theater receiver
and speaker system may be connected to
the Cat 5 receiver if desired.

Tracking Mode
To obtain up to six channels of analog or digital audio that track Cat 5 zone audio/video outputs, place a Model 1172BK in
the AVAtrix equipment stack immediately beneath the related Cat 5 output row. The diagram on the facing page shows a
basic system (for six zones), but an expanded system (for 18 zones) would be configured as shown in the table below.

1. Set the 1172BK rotary address switches to match the corresponding matrix outputs (AVM-562 or Model 1176BK).
2. Connect the #1 Cat 5 output of the AVAtrix to the Cat 5 receiver of the room you want to serve.
3. Connect the #1 output of the Model 1172BK to either the analog or digital audio inputs of an audio receiver used as
the music source for that room.
4. Plug a stick-on infrared emitter into the #1 IR Output port of the Model 1172BK and place the emitter on the IR window
of the audio amplifier or receiver. See the Tracking Mode Hookup Diagram.
Models 9878 and 9879 Cat 5 receivers or Model 9880 receivers may be used in any combination. An IR receiver plugged
into the Cat 5 receiver permits infrared commands to be sent to the 1176BK for A/V source selection, to the AVAtrix A/V
sources for source control, or to the room audio receiver for audio source selection, volume control, radio tuning, etc. The
IR receiver can be wall or ceiling mounted as best suits the job requirements. The AVAtrix takes care of routing the IR
signals generated in each room to where they must go.
Tracking Mode is used with audio distribution systems having dedicated amplifiers for each room’s speakers. The 1172BK
audio output #1 below tracks with the AVAtrix Cat 5 output #1 so that the audio matches the video at the zone. Address
each 1172BK to match the AVAtrix outputs.

Note: In addition to the whole house audio
distribution, a digital home theater receiver
and speaker system may be connected to
the Cat 5 receiver.
