1. Introduction
Overview
TalkMate™ is an optional module of the PagePac® 20 voice paging
system and is designed to fit under the PowerMate™ module. The
physical characteristics of PowerMate and TalkMate are listed in Table
1-A.
PagePac 20 is a 20-watt telephone-integrated voice paging system
designed for use with most PBX and key telephone systems. PagePac
20 provides voice paging from host system telephones over speakers
connected to the PagePac 20.
The basic PagePac 20 paging system consists of a PowerMate
module and speakers (Figure 1-1). This system provides one-way paging
into a single paging zone. PowerMate provides both voice coil and
70-volt outputs to the system speakers. Both outputs may be used at
the same time when connected to the appropriate type of speakers.
TalkMate provides talk-back when added to the system. Talk-back
allows individuals in the paging area to respond by using the speakers
as microphones. TalkMate contains a voice activated switch that is
controlled by the voice of the person making the page. When he/she is
silent for approximately one-third of a second, the switch goes into the
talk-back mode and the speakers become microphones. The voice of the
person making the page will switch the system back to the page mode.

PagePac 20 TalkMate
Adding the optional TalkMate module to PowerMate in a single-zone
paging system (Figure 1-2), or to ZoneMate 3 in a 3-zone paging system
provides talk-back to all voice coil speakers connected to TalkMate or
ZoneMate 3 (talk-back cannot be used with 70-volt speakers). Adding
TalkMate to ZoneMate 3 is covered in the ZoneMate 3 Service Manual.

the paragraphs that follow.

The cords, cable, and jacks used to make connections from TalkMate
Modular Cord P1 - Plugs into PAGE INPUT jack J1 on rear of
PowerMate.
PAGE INPUT Jack J101 - One end of the 6-foot modular cord
supplied with the PowerMate plugs into jack J101. The other
end of the cord connects to the host communications
system using either a modular plug or four spade-tip lugs.
When the cord is equipped with spade-tip lugs, connection to
the host system may also be through a connecting block.
For your host communications system, refer to the
PowerMate manual and the specific connection document
that is supplied with the PowerMate.

Cable P3 - Plugs into connector J3 on rear of PowerMate.
Carries power and audio circuits.

TALKBACK VOICE COIL OUT Jack -
Provides voice coil audio
output for use with speakers that feature talk-back.
Connectorized speaker cable or a Y-connector (supplied with
speakers) may be plugged directly into this jack.
Note:
The OUTPUTS jacks J4 and J5 on PowerMate may be
used in combination with the TALKBACK VOICE COIL
OUT jack on TalkMate (all three jacks may be used at
the same time). But only the speakers powered from
TalkMate will have talk-back.
TalkMate Controls
The TalkMate controls (Figure 1-3) are described in the paragraphs that
follow.

TALK/LISTEN SWITCH SENSITIVITY Control -
sensitivity of Page/Talk-Back switch. The Page/Talk-Back
switch controls the page and talk-back modes and is
controlled by the voice of the person making the page. Turn
control clockwise to increase sound level required to switch
back to page mode, or counterclockwise to decrease sound
level required to switch back to page mode.
Adjusts
●
LISTEN VOLUME Control - Adjusts talk-back volume received
at telephone. For example, this control will either increase or
decrease the sound volume when someone is responding to
a page by using the speakers as a microphone. Turn control
clockwise to increase talk-back volume and counterclockwise
to decrease volume.

2. Installation
Overview
This section provides installation and connection instructions for the
TalkMate.
TalkMate Installation and Connections
If you are connecting TalkMate to an operating PowerMate, it will be
necessary to turn off PowerMate and disconnect power, speaker cables, and
the page input cord that connects to host communications system. Start
at step 1 below.
If you are installing PowerMate and TalkMate at the same time, refer
to the PowerMate Service Manual for information on selecting equipment
locations and speaker installation procedures. Complete steps 1 thru 9 in
the Installation section of the PowerMate service manual, then go to step
5 below.

Turn PowerMate MUSIC VOLUME control
counterclockwise to OFF. The POWER indicator
will go off.
Unplug PowerMate power cord from its AC outlet.
Disconnect page input modular cord (Figure 1-1)
from PAGE INPUT jack J1 on PowerMate, but do
not disconnect far end of the cord from host
communications system or connecting block.
Disconnect speaker cable(s) or Y-connector(s) from
PowerMate OUTPUTS 70.7V LINE jack J4 and/or
VOICE COIL jack J5.
Note:
If you have completed steps 1 thru 9 in the
PowerMate manual, turn PowerMate MUSIC
VOLUME control to OFF and unplug module
before starting step 5.
Set PowerMate within recessed area on top of
TalkMate (Figure 1-3).
Plug TalkMate modular cord P1 (6-inch modular
cord with telephone plug) into PowerMate PAGE
INPUT jack J1 (Figure 1-3).
Plug TalkMate cable P3 (6-inch cable with box-like
modular connector) into PowerMate connector J3
(Figure 1-3).
Plug page input cord (6-foot modular cord supplied
with PowerMate that connects to host
communications system) into TalkMate PAGE
INPUT jack J101.

Plug PowerMate power cord into a 120V AC, 60 Hz
outlet.

Turn PowerMate MUSIC VOLUME control clockwise
to 1. The POWER indicator will light.

Set music volume to the desired level with the
PowerMate MUSIC VOLUME control. If music is not
provided, set control to 1.
The Y-connectors provided with the system
may be used as necessary to provide
additional speaker outputs. Refer to the
PowerMate manual for more information on
speaker installation and hookup.

3. Operation
Overview
This section contains instructions for operating and adjusting the
paging system after installation. If the system fails to operate properly, refer
to Section 4, Maintenance and Troubleshooting.
General Operation
Operating procedures for your host communications system are
shipped in the same package as the page input cord for your particular
system (these items are supplied with PowerMate).
When a page is in progress, individuals should be able to communicate
with the person making the page via the loudspeakers connected to
TalkMate.
The voice of the person making the page controls the talk-back switch.
The paging party may cut someone off in mid-sentence if he or she speaks
while the other person is responding to the page.
Adjusting Talk/Listen Sensitivity and Talk-Back Volume
If required, adjust the sensitivity of the Page/Talk-Back switch with the
TalkMate TALK/LISTEN SWITCH SENSITIVITY control (Figure 1-3).
(Page/Talk-Back switch is factory set for normal usage.)
Example:
If a telephone used for paging is located in a noisy area
(noise caused by machinery, office equipment, etc.), the
background noise may keep the Page/Talk-Back switch from
switching to talk-back. In this situation, the TALK/LISTEN
SWITCH SENSITIVITY control can be used to decrease the
sensitivity of the switch and therefore overcome the
background noise problem.
On the other hand, if you have to speak very loudly to get the switch
to go back into the page mode, its sensitivity can be increased.
Should the talk-back volume be unsatisfactory, either too high or too
low, adjust the volume with the TalkMate LISTEN VOLUME control (Figure
1-3).

4. Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Overview
This section contains instructions on how to isolate a problem in the
PagePac 20 PowerMate/TalkMate paging system to an individual module or
the host communications system.
Troubleshooting
Should trouble develop in the PagePac 20 system, verify that:
●
System power cord is plugged in and power is available at
outlet being used.
All cables and speaker wires are properly connected.
●
Note:
If the PowerMate internal fuse has blown, the module
must be returned to an authorized service center for repair
(POWER indicator fails to light).
Trouble conditions originating outside of the PagePac 20 system should
be located and cleared using normal telephone repair procedures and
maintenance procedures listed in the Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Section of the PowerMate Service Manual. The following equipment is
required:

Standard 2500-type telephone (touch tone) with full modular cord.
Dracon Six-Wire In-Line Modular Adapter (Part Number
10220-000).
Two 6-inch long jumper wires with clips.
