TLS Series Rev. A2, 8/09
• Introduction
TLS quick float level switches use reed switches as the detection contact and are designed for liquid level detection. These level switches are designed for level detection of drainage water and dirty water, such as factory exhaust. They are also suitable for slurries and high viscosity liquids.
Only one float is needed for ON/OFF control at both upper and lower limits, and control hysteresis width is easily adjustable on the spot.
Features
• Designed for dirty water containing floating objects and for high viscosity.
• ON/OFF control at both upper and lower limits is achieved with only one float.
• The simultaneous quick reverse action of the float does not cause switch chattering.
• Control width (hysteresis between upper and lower limit set points) is adjustable on the spot.
• Operates even in flowing liquid.
• Long lifetime due to the employment of a reed switch as the contact.
• Easy installation—just hang it down into the liquid.

• Principles of Operation
The reference figure below shows the fixing weight at the middle of the cable hanging down from the tank top. Just past the fixing weight is a cable with a flexible, moving tip which moves up and down with the float movement. Approximately twice the cable flexible length is the ON/OFF control width.
The inside construction of the float is comprised of a stem fixed at the middle part of float, with the reed switch set inside the stem. Two pieces of ring form magnet are fixed externally around the stem. Between the two magnets is a seal weight that moves up and down.

• Installation
Unpacking
When unpacking, do not damage the sensor with mechanical shock. After unpacking, make sure that the products you ordered are complete. If any part number is missing, wrong or damaged, please contact APG.
Installation
The TLS should be installed in an area that meets the following conditions:
1. T emperature range: TLS-8 +14 to 122°F (-10 to 50°C) TLS-8AK +14 to 160°F (-10 to 70°C)
2. Located away from any strong magnetic field
• Located away from drop, splash, or vapor around the lead wire egress
• Liquid should be free from any metallic substances
• Placed in a non-hazardous area
• Maximum liquid depth of 20 meters
• Ample space for maintenance and inspection
Location
Locate the TLS in an area where it is free to operate without interference. The swing distance allowance is measured from the tip of the float to the cable holder.
NOTE: Minimum distance from float to weight is 150 mm.

Assembly of TLS-8
Fixing points are as follows:
TLS-8 differential is from 330 mm to 4000 mm. Set the cable holder in the center of the differential. The distance from the cable holder to the float should be half of the differential.
For example: If differential = 300 mm, then the cable length should = 150 mm.
NOTE: Hysteresis of differential is ±30 mm
Assembly of TLS-6
Fixing points are as follows:
TLS-6 differential is from 270 mm to 1000 mm. Insert the cable into the cable holder and tighten the nuts to the wall of container as shown below; or tie the weight to the cable holder and submerge the weight to the bottom of the tank.
NOTE: Minimum distance from float to weight is 150 mm.

Installation
There are many methods that can be used to suspend and fasten the cable. Typical methods are shown below.
NOTE: Please use caution during installation. Extreme impact may damage the float. Maximum allowable impact is 10 G.

CAUTION! DO NOT EXCEED THE CONT ACT RA TINGS!
1. Overvoltage Reed switches are not designed for the direct starting of inductive loads such
as motors, contractors, solenoid valves, etc.
2. Overcurrent Momentary surge current may be produced by switching lamps or stray
capacity from long cable length.

• Chemical Resistance
The ABS covered float and mild PVC jacketed cable are compatible with a wide range of liquids. However, there are some liquids that will damage the floats. ABS may be immediately damaged by the following liquids:
Aromatics (benzene, toluene, xylene)
Esters and Ketones may cause swelling.
PVC should be used with caution in the following:
Oils, especially vegetable oils and fats, tends to absorb by the plasticizer of mild PVC jacketed cable. Consequently the cable stiffens. The flexibility decreases as the duration of immersion increases. If necessary, an alternative hypalon cable is available. The TLS can also be damaged by some chemicals such as hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, sulfuric acid, etc.
In general, the resistance to damage depends on concentration, duration of immersion, presence of the suspended solids, temperature, and/or corrosive gases. Although the TLS is designed for long life, we recommend that they be replaced at adequate intervals.
