Double Taper Cone Adapter Sets
For Brake Lathes
Operating and Service Instructions
No. 909232GP
No. 909233GP
The double taper cone adapters are made of
premium grade alloy steel. They have been
turned, hardened, and ground to extremely
close tolerances in concentricity and end
squareness to assure the accurate location of
hubbed drums and rotors for precision resurfacing.
The two tapers on each adapter are radiused,
not just coned. This results in a greater circular
bearing surface than is possible with a straight
taper cone and less chance of distortion to the
hub bearing race.
The diameter range of the two tapers on each
adapter also overlap in the sets to provide an
overall diameter range of 1.319" to 3.560". The
adapter sets thus match the hubbed bearing
surface of passenger cars, trucks, and RVs.
Instructions
After selecting the correct adapters to fit the
hubbed bearing seats, make sure the adapters
and the arbor are clean of all chips and dirt. The
proper mounting sequence is illustrated: Inner
adapter, hubbed drum or rotor, outer adapter,
any spacers necessary to fill out the arbor shaft,
the self-aligning spacer and the arbor nut.

Care of Adapters
The adapters are so precisely manufactured that a lathe
arbor in poor condition will affect their accuracy. Replace
an arbor that is warped or badly nicked and dented on the
spindle mating surfaces.
Handle each adapter as if it were fragile, even though it
is made of premium grade alloy steel and hardened.
Wipe clean after each use. A tiny chip or smear of dirt can
affect the mounting accuracy. Check all adapters for
dents, scratches or nicks that may have been caused by
one hardened adapter striking another accidently.
Correct these imperfections with a fine stone.
Store adapters carefully, don’t dump them in a carton to
collect nicks and dirt. Remove and clean all adapters each
time you machine a drum or rotor, especially the inboard
adapter. As you remove the drum or rotor, the inboard
adapter can move away from the face of the arbor letting
chips fall between the two surfaces.
Finally, don’t use the adapters for anything but mounting rotors and drums. They are NOT tail pipe expanders
or arbor press adapters.
