Clip-on Silencer
Operating Instructions
No. 901175
For use with Models 700 and 710 “On-the-Car”
Lathes and the No. 906900 & 906950 Twin Cutters
Silencers are used to suppress vibrations induced when
machining rotors and drums. In turn, the surface finish
quality of the resurfaced part is improved.
The No. 901175 Clip-on Silencer is especially useful for
machining rotors on the vehicle when there is insufficient
clearance for a rubber band type silencer. It can also be
used along with band type silencers to aid in further
dampening vibration on bench type lathes.
To prevent bodily injury, never install the
No. 901175 Clip-on Silencer while the rotor
is turning.
Instructions for Use
1. Loosen the square head set screws (A) and slide the
tool holders from position (B) to position (C) so that the
edges of the carbide inserts are 3/4-inch from the end of
the cutting arms, Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
2. Mount the “On-the-Car” lathe or the twin cutter as
described in the lathe operations manual.
3. Spread the two (2) friction pads apart, by pulling out
on both sides of the silencer frame spring, and slide the
silencer over the rotor.

WARNING
To prevent bodily injury, never install the
No. 901175 Clip-on Silencer while the rotor
is turning.
4. Position the silencer and the cutting mechanism so
that the silencer friction pads are squeezing the rotor and
resting upon the carbide inserts (F). The silencer frame
spring should rest on the ledge (E) of the cutting mechanism, fig. 4.
5. The direction of the rotor rotation (D) should always
tend to force the silencer into the face of the tool bits and
away from the center of the rotor, fig. 4.
When using the “On-the-Car” lathe, the carriage casting
(G) should prevent the silencer friction pads from sliding
off of the tool bits, fig. 4.
When using a Twin Cutter on a bench type lathe, the
safety shield can be adjusted to prevent the silencer friction pads from sliding off of the tool bits.
6. Begin to machine the rotor as described in the lathe
operations manual. When the cut is finished, the silencer
will snap off of the rotor.
Note: When using the “On-the-Car” lathe, one side of
the vehicle will require the silencer to be installed from
the underside of the lathe, fig. 5.
