ABOUT THE A501
The Amiga 501 is a combination RAM expansion module and battery
backed-up real time clock.
THE RAM EXPANSION MODULE
The RAM expansion module increases the memory of your Amiga 500 by
512 Kilobytes, for a total of 1 Megabyte.
This additional memory allows running more programs simultaneously, creat
ing larger spreadsheets and documents, or keeping frequently accessed files
in RAM memory to avoid having to swap files to disk.
You may find that a very few programs do not run correctly with expansion
memory installed. In this case, either contact the program developer to
possibly obtain a corrected revision, or use the NOFASTMEM utility on
Workbench to prevent expansion memory from being used temporarily.
THE CLOCK
The clock maintains the date and time for up to 3 months even when the
Amiga is turned OFF.
The clock has an internal rechargeable battery that may not be fully charged
when it is first installed. To charge it for the first time, after installation, leave
your Amiga ON for approximately 12 hours. The battery will then be fully
charged.
See the Introduction to the Amiga 500, Chapter 7, Setting the Real Time
Clock for instructions on how to set the clock.
NOTE: This battery does not provide back-up power to the memory circuits;
you will still lose anything in memory when you turn your Amiga OFF.

HOW TO INSTALL THE AMIGA 501
1. Turn the Amiga OFF and disconnect the power supply.
WARNING: Installing the A501 with the Amiga ON may cause possible
damage to the A501 and/or computer. This will void the warranty on your
Amiga.
2. Place the Amiga on a flat surface with the keyboard facing down.
3. Insert a small screwdriver into the slot to open the A501 access door in
the center of the A500.

4. Remove the A501 access door.
5. Place the A501 into the opening so that the A501 ’s connector lines up

6. Slide the A501 to the right while pushing it towards the back ledge.
WARNING: Do not force A501 in place. It should fit in place with just a firm
push. If it does not, check that all the pins in the A500 are straight and that
each pin inside the Amiga is lined up with a hole in the A501. Then try again.

7. Put the plastic door back into place and turn the A500 right side up. If the
door does not fit properly or bulges upwards in the center, check that the
A501 is fully connected— you should not be able to see even the base of the
A500 pins.
