CAUTION
!
Briskly stir or pour liquids before heating with
microwave energy to prevent spontaneous boiling or
eruption. Do not overheat. If air is not mixed into a
liquid, liquid can erupt in oven or after removal from
oven.
Superheating & Eruption
Occasionally, when using a microwave oven to heat liquid a
superheated condition occurs. This superheated liquid,
when disturbed, can rapidly or vigorously boil.
This is caused by the lack of air in the liquid, lack of
movement of the liquid, or lack of imperfections in the
cooking utensil. These conditions hinder boiling, resulting in
a seeming eruption when the liquid is disturbed or mixed
with air. The eruption is actually a rapid boil over condition.
This problem occurs most commonly with the addition of
instant coffee or a tea bag to a mug of hot water. However,
it can occur when the mug is removed from the microwave.
Superheating usually occurs under one of the following
conditions:
When using a very clean utensil, usually just taken
from the dishwasher.
When using warm or room temperature water before
heating in the microwave oven.
When using water that has been sitting still for a long
period of time.
To prevent superheating &
eruption:
Stir occasionally while heating.
Leave a microwavable spoon or wooden toothpick in
the utensil while heating.
Use a utensil with sloping walls, such as a measuring cup.
Add a pinch of instant coffee, etc. at the beginning or
halfway through heating.
