Section I
Getting Started
The chapter in this section provides a brief overview of the AT-S47
Management Software and explains how to start a management session.
13
Chapter 1
Getting Started
The AT-S47 Management Software and the management interface
simplify the task of monitoring and managing your Allied Telesyn
AT-WD1008 Wavelength Division Multiplexer. The interface, which
comes pre-installed on the AT-WDM02 Management Module along with
the AT-S47 software, enables you to manage the multiplexer through
easy-to-use menus or with command line interface (CLI) commands.
To actively manage a multiplexer, such as to change or adjust the
operating parameters, you must access the AT-S47 Management
Software on the AT-WDM02 Management Module. There are three
different ways to access the management software on an AT-WD1008
multiplexer. This guide refers to the access methods as management
sessions. The three types of management sessions are:
❑ Local Management Session
❑ Telnet Management Session
❑ SNMP Management Session
The following sections in this chapter briefly describe each type of
management session and how to start a management session.
14
Local Management Session
You establish a local management session with an AT-WD1008
multiplexer using the RS-232 port on the AT-WDM02 Management
Module.
Once the session is started, you will see a menu from which you can
make selections to configure and monitor the multiplexer. You can
configure all of the multiplexer’s operating parameters from a local
management session.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide
Starting a Local
Management
Session
To start a local management session with the multiplexer, perform the
following procedure:
1. Connect a terminal or a personal computer with a terminal emulator
program to the RS-232 port on the AT-WDM02 Management Module,
using the management cable included with the AT-WDM02
Management Module.
2. Configure the terminal or terminal emulator program as follows:
❑ Terminal mode: VT100-compatible / ANSI
❑ Baud rate: 9600
❑ Data bits: 8
❑ Parity: None
❑ Stop bits: 1
❑ Flow control: None
Note
The default settings are for a DEC VT100 or ANSI terminal, or an
equivalent terminal emulation program. Once you have started a
management session, you can adjust the speed and duplex mode of
the RS-232 port. For instructions, refer to Configuring the RS-232 Port on page 35.

Section I: Getting Started
Telnet Management Session
Any management workstation on your network that has the Telnet
application protocol can be used to manage an AT-WD1008 multiplexer.
In this guide, a Telnet management session is referred to as a remote
management session because you can manage the multiplexer from any
workstation on your network that has the application protocol. You do
not have to be physically near the multiplexer.
A Telnet management session gives you complete access to all of a
multiplexer’s operating parameters. You can perform the same functions
in a Telnet management session as you can in a local management
session. The only exceptions are initially assigning the multiplexer’s IP
address and downloading new software using XModem.
Starting a Telnet
Management
Session
Starting a Telnet management session involves specifying the IP address
of the multiplexer with a Telnet utility. If you have just installed the
multiplexer, you must initially assign the unit an IP address from a local
management session.
After you have specified the multiplexer’s IP address, you are prompted
for a password, if one has been assigned to the AT-S47 management
software. The default is no password. The Main Menu in Figure 2 on page
16 is then displayed. For instructions on using the Telnet utility, refer to
the documentation included with the utility.
As an example, the following steps show you how to start a Telnet
session from Microsoft Windows:
1. From the Start Menu on your MS Windows, select Run as illustrated in
Figure 3.
20
Figure 3 Start Menu
The Run window is displayed in Figure 4.

4. Type open, then press the Enter key.
The following prompt is displayed:
< to > _
5. Enter the IP address of the multiplexer you wish to connect to and
press the Enter key.
Once the IP address information is validated and confirmed, the
connection to the multiplexer is activated.
6. If a password has been assigned to the management software, enter
the password. The default is no password.
The AT-S47 Main Menu is displayed in Figure 2 on page 16.

management module automatically disconnects a management
session after a period of inactivity. For instructions on how to
configure a timeout value, refer to Specifying a Timeout Value on
page 68.
22
SNMP Management Session
Another way to remotely manage an AT-WD1008 multiplexer is with an
SNMP application program, such as HP Openview. A familiarity with
Management Information Base (MIB) objects is necessary to manage a
multiplexer with an SNMP management program.
To manage a multiplexer with an SNMP application program, you must
download the Allied Telesyn multiplexer MIB file from the Allied Telesyn
web site and compile the file with your SNMP program. For instructions,
refer to your SNMP management documentation.

Figure 7 IP Parameters Menu
3. Enter or change the parameters in the window as desired. Changes to
the parameters take effect immediately on the multiplexer. The
parameters are defined below.
ParameterDescription
IP Address
Specifies an IP address for the multiplexer. The ATWD1008 Multiplexer does not need an IP address,
subnet mask, or default gateway address for normal
network operations. However, if you wish to use the
Telnet utility or an SNMP application program to
manage the multiplexer remotely, you must assign the
multiplexer an IP address and subnet mask. You cannot
manage the multiplexer remotely without assigning
values for these parameters.
Furthermore, if the management station is separated
from the multiplexer by a router, you must also provide
a gateway address, which is the IP address of a router
through which the multiplexer can communicate with
the remote management station. Once values have
been assigned, you can remotely manage the
multiplexer from any network management station that
has the Telnet utility.
Subnet Mask
Specifies the subnet mask for the multiplexer. This
value is required to manage the multiplexer remotely.

Location
Specifies the IP address of the default router. This
address is required to manage the multiplexer remotely
if the remote network management station is separated
from the multiplexer by a router.
Specifies up to four IP addresses of network
management stations that will receive SNMP traps from
the multiplexer. The addresses are optional.
The management software uses the loader password to
prevent you from downloading an inappropriate file
onto the AT-WDM02 Management Module. This
password is used only for TFTP downloads of the
AT-S47 Management Software. You must specify the
download password as the destination file in the TFTP
command. The default password is “ats47”. For
information on downloading software using TFTP, refer
to Using TFTP to Upgrade the Management Software on page 75
.
Specifies the Get, Set, and Trap community strings.
Specifies the physical location of the multiplexer (for
example, First Floor, Lab.)
Contact
Specifies the contact information such as name, phone
number, and other information to help identify the
person responsible for managing the multiplexer.
Disable BOOTP
Disables the BOOTP protocol on the multiplexer. This is
the default setting.
Enable BOOTP
Enables the BOOTP protocol on the multiplexer.
NOTE: If you activate BOOTP, you must reset the
management module in order for the module to start
issuing the BOOTP requests. The multiplexer does not
support Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
The multiplexer issues up to three requests for its IP
configuration from the BOOTP server. If the BOOTP
server does not respond, the management module uses
the manually assigned IP address, if one was manually
assigned.
4. After you have adjusted the parameters, return to the Main Menu.
28
Naming the Multiplexer
This procedure assigns a name to the multiplexer. The name is displayed
in all management software windows. Names can make it easier for you
to identify the different multiplexers in your network when you
configure and manage them. The default name is WDM1008.
To name the system, perform the following procedure:
1. From the Main Menu, select System configuration.
2. From the System Configuration Menu, select System name and press
the Enter key.
❑ To set a new name for the system, enter a unique name of up to
20 characters.
❑ To delete the system name without entering a new name, enter a
space character.
3. Return to the Main Menu.

Figure 8 Trap Parameters Menu
The numbers following each trap relate to the list of IP addresses
of the management stations in the IP Parameters Menu shown in
Figure 7 on page 27.
The number “1” following a trap represents “Manager Address 1”
in the IP Parameters Menu; number “2” represents “Manager
Address 2,” and so forth. You use this numbering to control which
management workstations receive which traps. For example, if
you wanted only the management workstation with the IP
address specified in “Manager Address 2” to receive the Link Test
trap, you would change the Link Test item in the Trap Parameters
Menu so that it had only the number “2”. The default is for all
management workstations to receive all traps.
If you do not want a particular trap sent to any management
workstations, enter a 0 (zero) for the trap.
3. Enter or change the parameters in the window as desired.
30
Changes to the parameters take effect immediately on the
multiplexer.
