Alcatel-Lucent WiMAX
Making Universal Broadband a Reality
Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMAX offering: A complete, integrated, portfolio of products and services with end-to-end quality of service.
There are five main reasons for choosing Alcatel-Lucent WiMAX:
• The IEEE 802.16e standard offers full mobility and sophisticated features (i.e., SOFDMA, AAT) for optimal usage of radio resources.
• A compact and easy to deploy solution, Alcatel-Lucent WiMAX offers significant CAPEX and OPEX savings.
• Alcatel-Lucent has a broad solutions portfolio paired with vast expertise in end-to-end integration and project management.
• Alcatel-Lucent is strongly committed to ecosystem openness (i.e., applications and Customer Premises Equipment (CPE)) and this is demonstrated via our open CPE program.

WiMAX: Turning Technology into Revenues
Today, consumers demand ubiquitous, always-on broadband connectivity at low cost, anywhere they are. Leveraging a wealth of experience in broadband and wireless communication, and based on the latest IEEE
802.16e-2005 standards, Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMAX
offerings are the answer. No other offer in the industry so effectively addresses high-end users needing seamless broadband mobility with a single subscription and device, while at the same time serving users in remote villages in emerging economies that are eager to connect to the telephone and the Internet for the first time.
From an operator standpoint, Universal WiMAX (802.16e-2005 or Rev-e) is a flexible broadband access technology that opens new market opportunities in:
High growth economies, where WiMAX can deliver High-Speed Internet (HSI) access and telephony services — via voice over IP (VoIP) — in rural and urban environments where copper is not available, and also can meet the needs of high-end users in urban settings.
Mature Economies marked by high penetration of telecom services, where WiMAX allows operators to offer their customers advanced broadband services (video, gaming, office access) “on the go” and help address holes in broadband coverage.
Mobile Services
• High-Speed Internet browsing on the move
• Mobile VoIP
• Mobile office, push mail, mobile e-mail
• Mobile Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)
• Mobile video gaming
• Video services (unicast streams, video on demand, and broadcast TV)
• Push to talk, push to view
• Instant messaging
• On-board automobile entertainment, geo-location and security services.
Fixed Services
• High-Speed Internet (wireless DSL)
• Fixed VoIP
• Enterprise leased lines
• Fixed multimedia services
• Machine-to-machine connectivity and communication
Vertical markets can also benefit from WiMAX technology with applications in various environments such as airports, seaports, railway stations, large enterprises, power utilities, oil platforms and more.
WiMAX also offers new entrants an efficient way to penetrate the telecom market and challenge incumbent operators.
A wide variety of applications — fixed, nomadic or mobile — can be run over WiMAX, addressing the requirements of both fixed and mobile operators as well as ISPs or new entrants.
For example, transportation facilities can use WiMAX to track luggage and goods, law enforcement and security companies for rapid and flexible deployment of surveillance equipment, utility companies for telemetry and data communications.

Deploying WiMAX at the Lowest Cost
According to business cases developed with operators, Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMAX solution allows typical breakevens of 36 to 60 months.
IEEE 802.16e-2005 is the Right Technology
The Alcatel-Lucent WiMAX solution is a complete, end-to-end system that is fully compliant with the IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard. This standard affords superior performance for all types of usage: fixed, nomadic and fully mobile. Alcatel-Lucent’s natively IP solution can be seamlessly integrated with any IP network and efficiently complements any fixed or mobile infrastructure.
The complete WiMAX portfolio consists of carrier-grade radio-access equipment that allows operators to deliver voice and broadband services with or without mobility to a large number of users.
The WiMAX Base Stations: Alcatel-Lucent 9710 Compact WiMAX Base Station (C-WBS) and Alcatel-Lucent 9715 Light WiMAX Base Station (L-WBS) facilitate site acquisition and installation in a wide variety of environments, while offering cost-effective operation and flexibility for future evolution.
The Alcatel-Lucent 9740 WiMAX Access Controller (WAC) is designed to be positioned at the aggregation level and handles subscriber access control and authentication. It is compact and highly scalable.
The Alcatel-Lucent 9753 WiMAX Operation and Maintenance Center (OMC) provides easy and cost-effective network management, operation and maintenance as well as powerful network optimization capabilities.
Moreover, the standardized Alcatel-Lucent solution is fully interoperable with any terminal compliant with the IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard. Operators can therefore choose from among a wide selection of terminals to find the devices that best fit their subscribers’ needs.
