so effectively addresses high-end users needing seamless
broadband mobility with a single subscription and device,
while at the same time serving users in remote villages
in emerging economies that are eager to connect to
the telephone and the Internet for the first time.
From an operator standpoint, Universal WiMAX
(802.16e-2005 or Rev-e) is a flexible broadband access
technology that opens new market opportunities in:
High growth economies, where WiMAX can deliver
High-Speed Internet (HSI) access and telephony services
— via voice over IP (VoIP) — in rural and urban environments where copper is not available, and also can meet
the needs of high-end users in urban settings.
Mature Economies marked by high penetration of
telecom services, where WiMAX allows operators
to offer their customers advanced broadband services
(video, gaming, office access) “on the go” and help
address holes in broadband coverage.

Business Benefits: Advanced Antenna Technology
Makes the Difference
WiMAX base stations
and antennas
Fewer Radio Sites and Better Capacity thanks to Advanced Antenna Technology
The acquisition and operation of radio sites represents the huge portion of
an operator’s investment. It is also a major source of deployment constraints.
With Advanced Antenna Technology, WiMAX performance can be significantly improved thereby helping you offer better service with fewer base
stations. Beam forming and MIMO are standardized features of AlcatelLucent’s Advanced Antenna Technology.
Beam forming ensures that radio power is concentrated where
the terminal devices are located and the beam is automatically adjusted as
the terminal moves. This means, as compared to a single antenna system,
equipment and site acquisition costs are substantially reduced.
Beam forming also provides significant coverage and capacity gains in macro
cellular environments. By helping achieve coverage similar to GSM/UMTS
networks, mobile operators can reuse existing radio sites.

6Alca tel- Luce nt WiMA X • Making Univer sal Broadband a R eali ty
In addition, beam forming strongly reduces
interference and improves indoor penetration,
hence optimizing spectrum usage ―ultimately
re-using one single frequency ―and improving
quality of service.
MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output)
allows for additional increases in capacity
and/or coverage for a given cell versus single
antenna systems. For example, MIMO offers
additional capacity from 25 percent in macrocell environments, up to 80 percent in microcellular (i.e., indoor or hotspot) environments.
Combined, these capabilities not only
increase coverage, but also help ensure highly
efficient data throughput. As a result, AlcatelLucent’s WiMAX solution offers:
• Coverage enhancements: up to 40 percent
fewer sites required to cover a given area
Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMAX Advanced Antenna Technology implements
both MIMO and beam forming thus enabling you to benefit from the best
combination for your network roll-out.

A Scalable and Powerful Solution
The innovative Alcatel-Lucent WiMAX
solution is highly cost-effective making
for substantial CAPEX and OPEX savings.
Scalable in Multiple Dimensions
The Alcatel-Lucent WiMAX solution is designed to be
highly scalable in terms of:
• Number of cells (sectors)
• Number of users per cell
• Capacity per cell
The same base station equipment easily migrates from
omni-directional to sectorized coverage and easily
accommodates capacity increases thanks to Advanced
Antenna Technology. This modularity allows efficient
growth of capacity per area, both in terms of bandwidth
and number of supported users.
The Alcatel-Lucent 9740 WiMAX Access Controller
relies on a powerful modular architecture which
efficiently facilitates network growth while minimizing
OPEX.
Fully Scalable Carrier-Grade Management Solution
The Alcatel-Lucent 9753 WiMAX Operation and
Maintenance Center (OMC) is a cost effective, fully
scalable, carrier grade management solution for small
to very large access networks counting thousands of cells
per region. It offers, in a single product, a broad range
of services and optimization tools. Coverage extension
or densification is becoming fast and easy thanks to the
advanced radio provisioning system and base station plug
and play facility. All these different features and tools
contribute to a significant OPEX reduction and a faster
deployment.

Radio (SDR) Technology
To allow you to reuse existing sites, even when no space
is available, Alcatel-Lucent plans to integrate multiple
technologies into multi-standard cabinets: WiMAX plus
GSM or WiMAX plus 3G in the same rack.
In addition, a new generation of innovative transceiver
modules based on Software Defined Radio (SDR)
technology are being developed. The Radio Access Point
can then be remotely configured by software from O&M
to activate one or several radio technologies (i.e., GSM,
CDMA, UMTS, WiMAX).
Figure 3. Multiple technologies in the multi-standard cabinets
The benefit of this unique generation of modules will be
reduced investment and operating expenses when reusing
existing radio sites for WiMAX. In particular, you will be
able to:
• Have WiMAX and GSM or WiMAX and UMTS
or WiMAX and CDMA in a single cabinet
• Minimize maintenance spares
• Benefit from a better flexibility in terms of frequency
resources
• Minimize power consumption

Manageable Quality of Service
In order to meet each customer’s Service Level
Agreement (SLA), the Alcatel-Lucent
WiMAX solution allows operators to create
permanent connections with different QoS
levels (SLAs) on terminal entry for High-Speed
Internet and VPN services.
In addition, Alcatel-Lucent WiMAX dynamically manages the QoS over the air, call
per call, for services such as video and VoIP.
Because of the low latency, WiMAX enables
real-time applications like online gaming.
It also enables the optimal use of radio resources.
Alcatel-Lucent’s Open CPE Program
for a fully interoperable solution
One of the main objectives of service providers
is to offer a wide range of CPE with different
features and form factors, all of which
interoperate predictably with their network
infrastructure.
Alcatel-Lucent has implemented an Open CPE
Program to meet our three main objectives:
• To drive new feature availability through
partnerships and joint development
agreements with leading chipset vendors,
• To facilitate the emergence of a broader
variety of devices to stimulate the CPE
eco-system
• To enlarge commercial CPE offerings
by turning technical collaborations into
commercial agreements
In order to achieve these objectives,
Alcatel-Lucent established WiMAX
interoperability (IOT) centers in several
regions and opened a global network of
Executive Briefing Centers (EBC) where
the end-to-end solution, including terminals,
is demonstrated alongside Alcatel-Lucent’s
broad solutions portfolio.
