WiMAX: Turning Technology into Revenues
Today, consumers demand ubiquitous, always-on broadband connectivity at low cost, anywhere they are. Leveraging a wealth of experience in broadband and wireless communication, and based on the latest IEEE
802.16e-2005 standards, Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMAX
offerings are the answer. No other offer in the industry so effectively addresses high-end users needing seamless broadband mobility with a single subscription and device, while at the same time serving users in remote villages in emerging economies that are eager to connect to the telephone and the Internet for the first time.
From an operator standpoint, Universal WiMAX (802.16e-2005 or Rev-e) is a flexible broadband access technology that opens new market opportunities in:
High growth economies, where WiMAX can deliver High-Speed Internet (HSI) access and telephony services — via voice over IP (VoIP) — in rural and urban environments where copper is not available, and also can meet the needs of high-end users in urban settings.
Mature Economies marked by high penetration of telecom services, where WiMAX allows operators to offer their customers advanced broadband services (video, gaming, office access) “on the go” and help address holes in broadband coverage.

Business Benefits: Advanced Antenna Technology Makes the Difference
WiMAX base stations and antennas
Fewer Radio Sites and Better Capacity thanks to Advanced Antenna Technology
The acquisition and operation of radio sites represents the huge portion of an operator’s investment. It is also a major source of deployment constraints. With Advanced Antenna Technology, WiMAX performance can be significantly improved thereby helping you offer better service with fewer base stations. Beam forming and MIMO are standardized features of AlcatelLucent’s Advanced Antenna Technology.
Beam forming ensures that radio power is concentrated where
the terminal devices are located and the beam is automatically adjusted as the terminal moves. This means, as compared to a single antenna system, equipment and site acquisition costs are substantially reduced.
Beam forming also provides significant coverage and capacity gains in macro cellular environments. By helping achieve coverage similar to GSM/UMTS networks, mobile operators can reuse existing radio sites.

In addition, beam forming strongly reduces interference and improves indoor penetration,
hence optimizing spectrum usage ultimately
re-using one single frequency and improving
quality of service.
MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output)
allows for additional increases in capacity and/or coverage for a given cell versus single antenna systems. For example, MIMO offers additional capacity from 25 percent in macrocell environments, up to 80 percent in microcellular (i.e., indoor or hotspot) environments.
Combined, these capabilities not only
increase coverage, but also help ensure highly efficient data throughput. As a result, AlcatelLucent’s WiMAX solution offers:
• Coverage enhancements: up to 40 percent fewer sites required to cover a given area
Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMAX Advanced Antenna Technology implements both MIMO and beam forming thus enabling you to benefit from the best combination for your network roll-out.

A Scalable and Powerful Solution
The innovative Alcatel-Lucent WiMAX solution is highly cost-effective making for substantial CAPEX and OPEX savings.
Scalable in Multiple Dimensions
The Alcatel-Lucent WiMAX solution is designed to be highly scalable in terms of:
• Number of cells (sectors)
• Number of users per cell
• Capacity per cell
The same base station equipment easily migrates from omni-directional to sectorized coverage and easily accommodates capacity increases thanks to Advanced Antenna Technology. This modularity allows efficient growth of capacity per area, both in terms of bandwidth and number of supported users.
The Alcatel-Lucent 9740 WiMAX Access Controller relies on a powerful modular architecture which efficiently facilitates network growth while minimizing OPEX.
Fully Scalable Carrier-Grade Management Solution
The Alcatel-Lucent 9753 WiMAX Operation and Maintenance Center (OMC) is a cost effective, fully scalable, carrier grade management solution for small to very large access networks counting thousands of cells per region. It offers, in a single product, a broad range of services and optimization tools. Coverage extension or densification is becoming fast and easy thanks to the advanced radio provisioning system and base station plug and play facility. All these different features and tools contribute to a significant OPEX reduction and a faster deployment.
