Inside and Out.
What does that really mean? Let’s start with the inside. First off, we use original Gibson pickups. These pickups
have Alnico magnets, feature vintage wiring schemes, and full wax potting to eliminate microphonic feedback.
Next we use CTS potentiometers (pots) in all of our historic Les Pauls. CTS started making pots for us in the early
‘60s. The pots feature a solid carbon glide that gives you a more accurate taper for better signal response and
smoother performance. Add to that the “Bumble Bee” capacitors that we’ve commissioned for the historic line
and you have the most accurate reproduction parts available anywhere.
And the outside? The headstock is correctly shaped. We use Holly head veneers as
opposed to fiber. Vintage-style push-in bushings accent the machine heads, which are
now in a straight line like they used to be. We even changed the truss rod routing to
be more historically accurate too.
We offer three distinct neck shapes that are typical of what was available on Les Pauls
from 1952-1960. We roll the fingerboard binding like we used to, which makes for a
more comfortable feel, and the inlays feature sharp points on the corners and an
authentic “swirl” pattern.
The body features historically accurate thin binding, switchwasher, and jackplate.
Using the thinner material allows the pieces to form to the contour of the body much
better. We also silkscreen “Rhythm” and “Treble” on the switchwasher, just like we
used to. And don’t forget the body carve. Despite first impressions, not all carves are
alike. The top carve on Historic Les Pauls is flat on top with a shallow dish to reflect
the subtle contours.
All in all, these are the most historically accurate Les Pauls ever offered. Now you can
own a piece of the magic that has turned early Les Pauls into museum pieces for a
fraction of the cost - only from the Gibson Custom Shop.
