Safety instructions
The EWA 174. appliance has a power rating of 3000 Watt. It may only be connected to a mains socket protected with a 16 A fuse. It is possible, particularly when several appliances are operated simultaneously on the same circuit, that the corresponding fuse may trip. The safety features of AEG electrical appliances comply with accepted technical standards and the German Appliance Safety Law. Nevertheless, as a manufacturer we consider it our obligation to make you aware of the following safety information. The safety standards of AEG electric appliances are in keeping with the recognised rules of technology and the law governing the safety of appliances. Nevertheless as a manufacturer we are committed to familiarise you with the following safety instructions:
General safety
The appliance may only be connected to a power supply with the same voltage as that specified on the type plate (9)!
Never use the flex to pull the plug out of the socket but pull the actual plug.
If the mains cord of this appliance is damaged, it has to be replaced by the manufacturer or its customer service or a trained electrician to avoid risks.
Never use the kettle if it has been dropped or has evidently been damaged.
Repairs to the kettle may only be carried out by qualified personnel. As a result of incorrect repairs considerable dangers may result. Please contact the AEG customer service department or an authorised dealer in the event of repairs being necessary.
Always pull out the plug, before cleaning and attending to the
kettle,
– and after each time it is used.
ewa_A6._5.5.book Seite 6 Dienstag, 7. Dezember 1999 11:59 11
Safety of children
Only use the express kettle when supervised.
Supervise children particularly carefully!
Points to be remembered when operating the express kettle
Before starting the appliance ensure that the mains cord and plug are dry.
Never use the kettle with wet hands.
Never use the appliance outdoors.
Whilst using the express kettle, high
temperatures are reached which can cause scalding if the kettle is not handled carefully. Therefore only hold the appliance by the handle provided.
Do not use the kettle unsupervised. Do not place or use the kettle on hot surfaces or near naked flames.
Attention: If the kettle is overfilled there is a risk that the boiling water may spray out. Therefore never fill the kettle above the maximum marking.
Only use your kettle for heating water! Never put foodstuffs or foodstuff additives into the kettle. Never heat milk or stock on the kettle! Do not place any objects in the kettle!
Never use the appliance with the lid (1) open as otherwise the automatic boildry safety cut-out cannot work.
Do not move the appliance whilst it is on.
Never immerse the appliance in water!
Protect the appliance and cord from
heat and wetness.
If the appliance is used for any other purpose or is incorrectly used, the manufacturer adopts no liability for any damages which may result.
2 Disposal
Dispose of the packaging!
Do not simply throw away the packaging. Please observe the following instructions:
Packaging can be put to the old paper collection.
Polyethylene plastic bags (PE) can be given to the PE collection points for recycling. Padding of expanded polystyrene (PS) is CFC free and can be given to the relevant collection points (recycling depot). Please contact your recycling depot through your municipal authorities.
Dispose of you old appliance!
When you eventually stop using your appliance please bring it to the nearest recycling centre or to your dealer who will take it back for a small fee.
Using your kettle
Before using your new kettle you should wipe it inside and outside with a damp cloth due to hygienic reasons.
Initial use
0 Place the base unit (3) on a firm sur-
face.
0 Plug the mains plug into a wall socket.
3 If the mains cord is longer than neces-
sary it can be wound up at the bottom of the base unit (3).
0 Press button (2) and open the lid
(1).
0 Never fill the kettle below the mini-
mum filling level or above the maximum filling level (4).
0 Close the lid until it audibly engages
near the spout. The automatic boil-dry safety cut-out can only function reliably if this is done.
ewa_A6._5.5.book Seite 7 Dienstag, 7. Dezember 1999 11:59 11
0 Place the kettle onto the base in any
position you wish.
0 Press the ON/OFF switch (5) inwards,
the pilot lamp (6) lights up and the appliance starts heating.
3 The ON/OFF switch (5) only catches when the kettle is on the base unit (3).
3 Do not use the water from the first boiling cycle to prepare food.
The automatic switch off
The kettle will switch itself off automatically and the pilot light will go out when the water has boiled.
If you want to interrupt the boiling cycle before it switches off automatically, simply press the ON/OFF switch (5) or lift the kettle. If you want to reheat water which has already been heated, press the ON/OFF button again (5). When the water is boiling the kettle switches itself off automatically.
Instant function (only EWA
173.)
With the instant switch (7) you activate the instant function of the kettle (set to position 2).
When the appliance is operated on the instant function, a thermostat switches off the heating before the water boils. This temperature is ideally suitable for pouring over many instant drinks or stocks.
A water temperature just under boiling point is also recommended for some types of teas. Slight temperature differences can arise depending on how full the kettle is.
After the thermostat switches off, the pilot light stays on until the appliance is switched off at the ON/OFF switch (5), or the kettle is lifted from the base unit (3).
Limescale filter
The limescale filter (8) in the spout retains any limescale residues in the kettle.
0 To remove the limescale filter, push it
downwards on the top cover.
0 To fit the limescale filter, insert it into
the spout and pull upwards on the cover until it engages.
Safety system
All AEG kettles are equipped with a boil-dry safety cut-out. This feature protects the appliance from overheating when started without water or from boiling until it is empty if used with the lid open. If the appliance is accidently switched on without water, it is automatically protected against overheating. The heating process is automatically interrupted. Before using the kettle again let it cool down for 510 minutes.
Cleaning and care
1 Always disconnect the kettle from the mains supply before cleaning.
1 Never clean the kettle and base unit under running water or immerse it in washing-up water.
0 Occasionally rinse out the kettle with
clean water.
0 Clean the outside of the appliance
only using a damp cloth. Do not use any caustic or abrasive cleansing agents.
Descaling
When the bottom of the kettle has too much limescale, the heating process is interrupted by a thermostat and delays the instant function from being switched off in the case of model EWA 173.
ewa_A6._5.5.book Seite 8 Dienstag, 7. Dezember 1999 11:59 11
Therefore the appliance should be descaled regularly depending on the level of the water hardness. Use a standard descaler following the directions; preferably choose an environmentally friendly product.
0 First fill in water, then a standard des-
caling preparation which is not too strong.
1 Do not boil the solution as it could foam over.
0 After descaling, rinse the kettle out
thoroughly with clean water. Never pour descaling agents into an enamel sink and do not reuse them.
