Dear Customer,
g
Please read these operating instructions through carefully. Above all please follow the safety instructions on the first few pages of these operating instructions! Please keep the operating instructions for future reference. If applicable, pass these instructions on to the next owner of the appliance.
1 Safety Instructions
• Before using the kettle for the first time, please note that you should only connect it to a mains supply with the same voltage as that stated on the rating plate (Figure 1/K).
• The Express Kettle is only to be used under supervision. Never place or use it on a hot surface or near a naked flame.
Take particular care with children.
• Do not use the kettle if the mains lead is in any way defective. Check it from time to time to ensure that it is not damaged.
• If the lead or plug are damaged, they may only be repaired or replaced by the manufacturer, the manufacturer’s customer service, or an authorised electrician. Improper repairs put your
safety at risk.
• High temperatures are created when electric kettles are used, these may cause burns if the appliance is handled carelessly. For this reason, you should only ever take hold of the kettle by the handle provided (Figure 1/G).
• Never use the lead to pull the plug out of the socket.
• Never immerse the appliance in water.
• Make sure the lead and plug are dry before the kettle is plugged in or switched on.
• Never use the kettle with wet hands.
• Do not move the appliance whilst it is on.
Caution: Overfilling the kettle may lead to boiling water splashing out of the kettle. To avoid this hazard, never fill with more than 1.5 l water.
• Protect the appliance and the mains lead from heat and moisture.
• Only ever use the kettle for heating water. Never put any foods or food additives in the kettle. Never heat milk or soup in the kettle. Do not heat anything in the water in the kettle.
• Electrolux cannot accept any liability for the consequences of improper use or operation.
• Never use the kettle with another base.
• Never use the appliance out of doors.
This appliance complies with the fol-
;
lowing EC directives:

• 89/336/EWG dated 03.05.1989 „EMC Directive", including Directive Amendment 92/31/ EWG

Operating Instructions
Before using your new kettle for the first time, you should clean the outside with a damp cloth for reasons of hygiene. We recommend you to pour away the water from the first boiling.
Open the lid and fill the appliance with water (Figure 2).
Caution: Never fill with less than the minimum quantity of water of 0.25 l, or with more than the maximum quantity of water of 1.5 l (Figure 3). If the kettle is overfilled there is a risk that boiling water will splash out of the kettle.
To switch on the appliance, press the ON/OFF switch lever (Figure 4) downwards. The power indicator lights up and indicates to you that the appliance is switched on.
Important: Before you switch on the appliance, make sure that the lid is fitted properly as the automatic switch off device only works correctly if the lid is shut properly (Figure 5).
For technical reasons condensation may form under the handle. This condensation will not affect the function of the appliance.
Beeper (only SWK 780)
Depending on the model, the appliance is equipped with a beeper that works as follows:
When the water is boiling the kettle starts to beep, it switches off automatically and the power indicator goes out.
The beeper also sounds if the kettle has been put on to boil and is interrupted, either by removing the appliance from the base, or by switching it off using the ON/OFF switch.
Filter (only SWK 780)
Depending on the model, the appliance is equipped with a filter (Figure 1/L). The filter can be removed.
The filter retains particles of scale that may be present in the kettle. If your kettle is heavily scaled, you must descale it. Please carry out descaling as described in the "Descaling" section.
Safety Functions
Safety has the highest priority during the design of Electrolux appliances. Your kettle has the following safety functions:
Automatic Switch Off Device. The appliance switches itself off automatically and the power indicator goes out when the water is boiling.
Protection Against Boiling Dry. Pro- tects the appliance against overheating if switched on without water. Heating is stopped automatically. Leave the appliance to cool for approx. 510 minutes prior to using again.
Protection Against Overheating. Should you kettle overheat, it switches off automatically. Leave to cool for approx. 5-10 minutes prior to using again.
You Express Kettle has a fully thermally insulated housing (Figure 1/C). This – prevents the hot water in the appli-
ance cooling down too quickly,
– and protects you from burns when
the housing is touched
CAUTION: The lid and the upper part of the appliance will become hot and should not be touched.

Cleaning and Care
Always disconnect the kettle from the mains supply before cleaning.
Never wipe over the plug with a damp cloth.
Never clean the kettle and base unit under running water or immerse it in washing-up water.
Rinse the kettle occasionally with clear water. Clean the exterior of the appliance with a damp cloth. Never use caustic or abrasive cleaners.
Descaling
The appliance should be regularly descaled depending on the hardness of the water. Indications that the kettle should be descaled are:
the kettle takes longer to boil, the kettle makes more noise when
heating the water,
– visible scale deposits in the appli-
ance.
For descaling please use a commercially available and, as far as possible, environmentally acceptable descaler in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
First fill with water, then add a commercially available descaler, do not use too high a dose. Under no circumstances bring the solution to the boil, otherwise it may boil over.
Following descaling, thoroughly rinse the kettle with clear water. Never pour descaler into enamelled sinks and never reuse it.
2 For the Sake of the
Environment
Do not simply throw the packaging away. Cardboard packaging can be taken to your local waste paper collection point. Deposit plastic bags made of polyethylene (PE) at PE collection points. Please ask you local authority for the address of your nearest recycling depot.
Customer Service
The highest quality requirements are placed on our appliances. However, should a malfunction occur for which you cannot find any information in the operating instructions, please contact your dealer or Electrolux customer service.
