1 Safety information
The appliance must only be operated with the voltage and type of power specified on the rating plate (fig. 1/G).
Connection must only be made to a properly installed socket. For your own safety use only earthed sockets.
Use only a 10 A cable as extension for the power cable. Ensure that the cable is laid on the floor, so that it cannot trip anyone or be pulled out inadvertently. The extension cable must be provided with a protective conductor.
If other appliances with high current consumption are connected to the power supply at the same time, overload can occur and the fuse blows.
The appliance must only be operated under supervision. Even if the room is only left for a short time, the power plug should be with- drawn. Keep children away.
The appliance must only be used for ironing and not for any other purpose.
Never place the iron on the base without a rest plate.
The hood can become discolored in the course of time depending on user habits. This has no effect on the function of the appliance.
Caution! Danger of burns!
1
During operation the sole-plate and hood of the iron get very hot!
With steam-ironing steam escapes from the openings in the sole-plate.
The spray function (DBS 200 only) is provided with hot water, some steam may also escape in certain circumstances.
The connecting cable with hose from the base to the iron (fig. 1/N) becomes hot during operation.
If the cable holder (DBS 200 only, fig. 1/Q) is used, ensure that it is properly locked in the station. Also ensure that the appliance is standing securely on a firm base.
Never dip the appliance in water!
12
g
Always place the hot iron horizontally on the iron rest-plate (fig. 1/E). The iron must not be placed in the vertical position.
While ironing stand the base on a stable surface to ensure a sufficient circulation of air under the appliance.
Iron bases with a wooden surface should be protected from moisture with an oilcloth or similar material.
The connecting cable must not be bent nor wound around the hot iron.Only store the appliance when cool.
For longer periods of storage empty the water from the station.
The appliance must only be used when in satisfactory condition. If it is damaged, contact the AEG customer service.
Please check the power cable for damage from time to time! A special tool is required to eliminate damage to the connecting cable. Therefore contact your specialist dealer directly or the relevant AEG customer service department in this case and for all other faults.
Repairs to electrical appliances must only be performed by specialists! Considerable danger can arise for the user if repairs are not done properly.
Technical data
Power consumption: 2200 W Mains voltage: 220–240V/50Hz
This appliance conforms with the fol-
;
lowing EU directives: – 73/23/EEC of 19.02.1973 Low volt-
age directive, including modified directive 93/68/EEC.
– 89/336/EEC of 03.05.1989 EMC-
directive, including modified directive 92/31/EEC.
Commissioning
0 Withdraw water tank from base (fig. 4). 0 Unpack the descaling cartridge and
place it in the water tank (fig. 5). It must lie on the floor of the tank.
Ironing
0 Fill the water tank (fig. 6). Refer to
Water quality for choice of water.
Never fill the water tank with hot
1
water. Never add alcoholic substances or
essences (perfume, eau de Cologne, lavender water, etc.) to the water.
0 Press the water tank firmly back into
its case.
0 Connect the appliance to the power
supply. Switch on. The operating indication lamp lights (fig. 7).
0 Set the temperature selector for
steam-ironing between ●● and
●●● (fig. 8).
13
g
0 Wait until the steam generator tem-
perature indication lamp in the base extinguishes (approx. 3 minutes) (fig. 9).
0 Press steam jet button until steam
emerges (fig. 10).
If there is no more water in the tank,
1
the steam jet button should no longer be operated.
Owing to the high steam capacity, the
3
steam jet button need only be pressed briefly each time. Short, repeated pressing of the steam jet button is enough to obtain a continuous and sufficient amount of steam.
With intensive use steam can still be emitted after releasing the steam jet button and water can therefore condense on the rest plate. If necessary, dry the plate. There is no danger of damage.
DBS 200 only: spray function
The articles for ironing can be moistened using the spray function, e.g. to remove severe creasing.
0 Keep the steam button pressed and
press the spray button throughout the spraying time (fig. 11).
The spray water mixes with the steam and is emitted from the spray nozzle. The moisture applied to the washing articles is not always visible. It is sufficient, however, to smooth folds and to avoid excessively long drying times.
Steam regulator setting (fig. 12)
Select the steam volume according to the type and condition of the textiles: very dry or damp textiles, textiles which absorb water to a greater or lesser degree.
DBS 200 only: TURBO-SHOT position (fig. 2/R)
If the steam button is pressed, the iron produces a strong jet of steam for several seconds before the steam emission is normal again. To produce this effect again stop the steam output for a few seconds and the special TURBO SHOT system regulates the maximum steam output without undesired emission of water.
Refill with water
Water should be refilled as soon as the level has fallen below the minimum mark on the tank (fig. 4).
The tank can also be refilled while iron-
3
ing. It is unnecessary to switch off the appliance for this purpose.
14
g
Temperature setting (fig. 8)
Please note the internationally valid care symbols, which indicate the correct ironing temperature on the label.
The following table shows the temperature setting suitable for the type of fabric.

ture selector

We recommend that the laundry is presorted. Start by ironing textiles requiring low ironing temperatures (e.g. PERLON). Then textiles requiring higher temperatures are ironed. This prevents damage to delicate fabrics by too high temperatures. After switching on, the iron temperature indication lamp lights (fig. 1/B) and extinguishes when the temperature set is reached. If, however, the temperature selector (fig. 1/C) is turned back again at any time, it must be noted that cooling of the sole-plate takes a little time. It has only cooled to a low temperature when the iron temperature indication lamp lights.

Steaming hanging garments (fig. 13)
The iron can also be held vertically for steam-ironing to smooth or freshen hanging garments or net curtains.
0 Move the iron from top to bottom
while pressing the steam jet button several times. Preferably hold the article to be steamed fully stretched. The quality of the ironing depends on the type of fabric.
Caution: Do not freshen up garments

while wearing. Danger of burns!
Water control system
The electronic water control system checks the condition of the descaling cartridge by continuously measuring the lime content of the water filtered by the cartridge. In this way the water control system prevents any risk of scaling.
Indication lamp for exchange of descaling cartridge
When the descaling cartridge is used up, the signal lamp flashes indicating exchange of descaling cartridge required (fig. 2/Mc). The cartridge must then be changed.
If the descaling cartridge is not changed, the water control system itself interrupts the supply of steam after a time. To obtain steam again the cartridge must be renewed (or if previously operated with mains water, distilled water can be used for a short time).
Exchanging the descaling cartridge
A new descaling cartridge can be obtained from the customer service or in the specialist trade (E-no. 900 195 170/7).
After exchanging the descaling cartridge switch the appliance off and then on again.
15
g
Water quality
The following may be used:
Mains water
Distilled water
Condensation from laundry drier,
which has previously been filtered with a coffee filter.
The following must not be used:
Rain water
Defrosting water from refrigerator or
similar units
Water supplied from a water softener if this operates with regeneration salts (these are incompatible with the water control system)
Choice of water
Depending on the amount of lime in the mains water it can be more economical to use commercially available distilled water. In this case the descaling cartridge lasts for 1 to 2 years (depending on amount of ironing and steam volume).
The descaling cartridge must always remain in the water tank however.
Directions for measuring the water hardness (fig. 14)
A test bar is included with the appliance to estimate the hardness of your mains water.
0 Dip the test bar into the mains water
for one second and remove.
0 Move the test bar lightly to and fro for
a few seconds and wait for one minute.
Recommendation
1 or 1½ purple colored fields: mains water can be used.
2 or more purple fields: we recommend the use of commercially available distilled water.
AUTO-STOP safety system (DBS 200 only)
If the iron is securely placed on the rest plate and the steam jet button is not operated for at least 20 minutes, the AUTO-STOP switches off the electrical power supply to the appliance automatically.
The AUTO-STOP signal lamp lights (fig. 2/Mc) and the steam generator temperature indicating lamp (fig. 2/Mb) extinguishes.
The power supply is connected again after operating the steam jet button. The steam generator temperature indication lamp lights and the AUTO-STOP signal lamp (fig. 2/Mc) extinguishes.
The steam jet button should only be
3
used again when the steam generator temperature indication lamp has extinguished.
Storage
Switch off with on/off switch (fig. 1/L), withdraw mains plug and allow the unit to cool down completely!
If the unit is stored in a horizontal position, the water tank must not be emptied.
If the unit is stored in the vertical posi-
1
tion or before every transport or dispatch and if stored for a long period, the water tank must be emptied. If there is a risk of frost the water tank must be emptied in any case!
16
g
Maintenance and care
The sole-plate of the iron can be contaminated by remains of washing agent and by the finish of fabrics and fibres and it then no longer slides smoothly over the material.
The iron should therefore be rubbed over with a fluff-free cloth after ironing. Marks and deposits difficult to remove should be treated with an iron cleaning pencil.
Products containing alkali (e.g. oven
1
cleaners), sharp cleaning agents, abrasive agents or steel wool must not be used on any account.
2 For the sake of the
environment
Do not simply discard packing material.
Cardboard packing can be taken to used paper collection points.
Take the plastic polyethylene bag (PE) to a PE collection point for recycling.
Padding elements are of foamed polystyrene (PS). They are free from CFC.
Please make inquiries at your municipal office about your local recycling centre.
