KMS4 Multiplatform Keyboard/Mouse Switch
Instruction Manual
Contents
Introduction
The KMS4 is a keyboard multiplexer with onboard multiple keyboard system interfaces. One
keyboard can communicate with up to 4 different systems, and the user controls system selection by programmable soft macros. Keyboard mapping is provided between the different keyboard types so the user can choose which ever keyboard is preferred.
Mouse protocols are handled in the same way, with support for Microsoft, PS/2, DEC, Sun and Apple.
I - Tips for Set up
DO NOT CONNECT KMS4 TO ITS INTENDED COMPUTERS WITHOUT FIRST POWERING DOWN THE COMPUTERS.
Follow the 10 steps for installation starting at Page 5 of this manual. Once a mouse is connected to the KMS4, and the KMS4 is connected to the its attached
computers, it is necessary to program the KMS4 ( Step 10). Each KMS4 channel and the KMS4 input device type must be programmed. This is required so
that the KMS4 can correctly interpret the input data and so that the KMS4 can re-map the data, and service the appropriate electrical interface for the attached computers.
WHEN A KMS4 IS REDEPLOYED OR DIFFERENT SETUP INSTALLED, REPROGRAMMING MAY BE REQUIRED.
The programming procedure requires the KMS4 to be powered and attached to the actual type of keyboard and mouse that will be used. The programme set up is stored in non-volatile RAM and will not be lost when the KMS4 is powered off.
See Page 8 of the manual to set up keyboard/mouse type and channel settings.
Overview
To change the keyboard and mouse type, or when the input device is not set up. Hold the front panel push-button for more than 8 seconds then push/release the button rapidly 4 times. A channel light will start to flash quickly.
The input device is selected by repeatedly pressing the front panel button while in this mode. Channel 1 light: PS/2 keyboard, PS/2 mouse Channel 3 light: Sun keyboard & mouse Channel 4 light: Apple keyboard and mouse or Apple Keyboard & PS/2 mouse
All other settings should not be used, including any combinations of lights which are for reserved modes.
Once the channel number is set to suit the keyboard and mouse Type R to reset the KMS4. Note: Resetting the KMS4 will disable any PS/2 mouse connections - the PS/2 will require a warm boot to re-enable the mouse.
The KMS4 will automatically leave programming mode if a key is not pressed for 35 seconds or 10 seconds after a key is pressed.
Once the keyboard and mouse type is set - use the keyboard to set other options. ( Refer to Page 8 of the manual)
To enter program mode 0 with the keyboard/ mouse type set up. Hold down the front panel push button and strike the TAB key on the keyboard. Note you
cannot change the input keyboard/mouse type if you entered program Mode 0 in this way. The quickest way to set the KMS4 is to select one of the Single key overall setups listed on
page 9 of the manual.

II - Safety Warning
In order for the KMS4 to comply with the requirements of EN60950, the following points MUST be complied with:
1) Do not connect KMS4 to any device that will impair the SELV (safety - extra low voltage)
integrity of the system. Do not connect the KMS4 to any device capable of generating hazardous voltages on the keyboard, mouse or RS232 port.
2) Only use cables provided by Access Keyboards.
3) Only use power supply provided by Access Keyboards.
4) The maximum total rated load drawn by the keyboard & mouse must not exceed the stated
maximum on the rating label. This applies to the devices connected to inputs 1, 2 and 3, EXT LED and the SUN K/M port together. The KMS104 external lightbar draws 8mA max.
5) Check the KMS4 rating label.
6) Only use fuses supplied.
7) Do not use the external power supply if the KMS4 is powered by the computers. The unlikely
event of a power supply fault may go undetected. You can test your system by removing the power supply while all computers are on, if the KMS4 continues to operate, do not replace the power supply.
8) Ensure the mains socket outlet for the power supply (if used) is near the equipment and
remains easily accessible.
9) No user-serviceable parts inside the KMS4 and power supply. Hazardous voltages are
present in the power supplies.

IV - Installation
Important - Ensure that all equipment is powered-off during installation
STEP 1 - Read safety instruction
Ensure that you have chosen the correct safety options for equipment to be connected to the KMS4. Ensure that the cables match these options (see cable description guide below)
STEP 2 - Identify the computer cables
