KMS4 Multiplatform Keyboard/Mouse Switch
Instruction Manual
Contents
Introduction
The KMS4 is a keyboard multiplexer with onboard multiple keyboard system interfaces. One
keyboard can communicate with up to 4 different systems, and the user controls system selection by programmable soft macros. Keyboard mapping is provided between the different keyboard types so the user can choose which ever keyboard is preferred.
Mouse protocols are handled in the same way, with support for Microsoft, PS/2, DEC, Sun and Apple.
I - Tips for Set up
DO NOT CONNECT KMS4 TO ITS INTENDED COMPUTERS WITHOUT FIRST POWERING DOWN THE COMPUTERS.
Follow the 10 steps for installation starting at Page 5 of this manual. Once a mouse is connected to the KMS4, and the KMS4 is connected to the its attached
computers, it is necessary to program the KMS4 ( Step 10). Each KMS4 channel and the KMS4 input device type must be programmed. This is required so
that the KMS4 can correctly interpret the input data and so that the KMS4 can re-map the data, and service the appropriate electrical interface for the attached computers.
WHEN A KMS4 IS REDEPLOYED OR DIFFERENT SETUP INSTALLED, REPROGRAMMING MAY BE REQUIRED.
The programming procedure requires the KMS4 to be powered and attached to the actual type of keyboard and mouse that will be used. The programme set up is stored in non-volatile RAM and will not be lost when the KMS4 is powered off.
See Page 8 of the manual to set up keyboard/mouse type and channel settings.
Overview
To change the keyboard and mouse type, or when the input device is not set up. Hold the front panel push-button for more than 8 seconds then push/release the button rapidly 4 times. A channel light will start to flash quickly.
The input device is selected by repeatedly pressing the front panel button while in this mode. Channel 1 light: PS/2 keyboard, PS/2 mouse Channel 3 light: Sun keyboard & mouse Channel 4 light: Apple keyboard and mouse or Apple Keyboard & PS/2 mouse
All other settings should not be used, including any combinations of lights which are for reserved modes.
Once the channel number is set to suit the keyboard and mouse Type R to reset the KMS4. Note: Resetting the KMS4 will disable any PS/2 mouse connections - the PS/2 will require a warm boot to re-enable the mouse.
The KMS4 will automatically leave programming mode if a key is not pressed for 35 seconds or 10 seconds after a key is pressed.
Once the keyboard and mouse type is set - use the keyboard to set other options. ( Refer to Page 8 of the manual)
To enter program mode 0 with the keyboard/ mouse type set up. Hold down the front panel push button and strike the TAB key on the keyboard. Note you
cannot change the input keyboard/mouse type if you entered program Mode 0 in this way. The quickest way to set the KMS4 is to select one of the Single key overall setups listed on
page 9 of the manual.

IV- Programming the KMS4
Overview
Each KMS4 channel and the KMS4 input device type must be programmed. This is required so that the KMS4 can correctly interpret the input data (i.e. the data arriving from the keyboard and mouse) and so that the KMS4 can then re-map the data, and service the appropriate electrical interface for the attached computers.
The programming procedure requires the KMS4 to be powered and attached to the actual type of keyboard and mouse that will be used. The programmed set-up is then held in non-volatile RAM and will not be lost when the KMS4 is powered off .
Currently the KMS4 has two program modes - program mode 0 and program mode 1. Program mode 2 will be added later for language support.
Program mode 0 is primarily for the configuring the basic set-up of the KMS4 i.e. the type of computers and the type of keyboard/mouse. In general, the KMS4 should be reset after changing any configuration options in program mode 0 (type R when finished).
Program mode 1 is used to change ‘hotkey’ (i.e. channel select sequences) for each computer, and various mouse switching parameters.
Program mode 2 is used to select different languages.
Program mode 0 To enter program mode 0, keyboard/mouse type not set up.
If the input device is not set up (i.e. you cannot communicate with the KMS4 from the keyboard/mouse): Press the front panel push-button - hold the button down for more than 8 seconds, then push/release the button rapidly 4 times. You can change the input keyboard/mouse if you entered program mode 0 in this way.
The input device is selected by repeatedly pressing the front panel push button while in program mode 0. See below for the appropriate channel light display.
To enter program mode 0, keyboard/mouse type already set up.
If the input device is already set up (i.e. you can communicate with the KMS4 from the keyboard): Hold down the front panel push-button and strike the TAB key. Note that you cannot change the input keyboard/mouse type if you entered program mode 0 in this way.
Program mode 0 light display: Rapid flashing channel light ( 8 flashes/sec). The channel
no. combination indicates selected input device type: Channel 1 light: PS/2 keyboard, PS/2 mouse Channel 2 light: Reserved Channel 3 light: Sun keyboard & mouse Channel 4 light: Apple keyboard & mouse or Apple keyboard & PS2 mouse Channel 1&4 lights: Reserved Channel 2&4 lights: Reserved (currently PS/2 keyboard & mouse) Channel 3&4 lights: Reserved (currently PS/2 keyboard & mouse)

Once the KMS4 has been set-up to recognise the keyboard & mouse, the keyboard is used to select the various options below:
Program mode 0 Channel dependant options
FIRST: Type 1..4 on the QWERTY keypad to select a particular channel, then type: A for PS2/AT F for Apple B for RS6000 G for XT C for SUN type 5 H for PS2/AT extended keyb timing D for Dec LK201 I for Dec LK401 E for NeXT J for Windows 95 PS2/AT keyboard Type U To force scan set 1 on PS2/AT. This option would be used in instances where it is likely
that the KMS4 would be reset after connection to some types of PS/2. (Model 95 and some model 70s and 50s). These PS/2s set-up an alternate keyboard mode at boot time (scan set 1), this means that if the KMS4 is reset after the PS/2 bootup, then it will be impossible to communicate with the PS/2 without resetting the PS/2. Forcing scan set 1 will overcome this potential problem.
Type V To not force scan set 1
Program mode 0 Single key overall set-ups.
These options override any current setting, and provide a quick one-key set-up that may be modified as described above.

VI- Key mapping
This following section describes how to generate key codes for a particular computer when not using that computer's native keyboard. E.G. how to generate a Right CTRL for a PC when using a Sun type 5 keyboard.
Multiple key sequences written below as (Compose & DownArrow) mean while holding down the compose key, press the DownArrow key.
Keys that are directly mapped (e.g. ALT on the NeXT and ALT on the PC keyboard) are not specified below.
Keys that do not exist on a computer's native keyboard, but exist on the actual keyboard being used, are not specified below (e.g. The NeXT has no function keys). In these cases, the KMS4 does not transmit any key-codes to the computer unless mentioned below.
Note that different countries use different keyboard layouts (e.g. the US PC keyboard has a # above the 3, while the UK has a £). In general, the KMS4 is supplied with internal firmware for a particular country (EG US or UK) and expects to be connected to a keyboard of the same language variant as the computers. User-specific language variants and key mapping are available on request.
