Course aim
This course is designed to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to use twin rope work positioning techniques to perform a range of tasks in order to deal with a variety of possible emergency situations that may arise due to the vast varying workplaces that tower workers may face in everyday working environments.
Course objectives
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of:
Identification and assessment of hazards
Capabilities and limitations of rescue equipment
Casualty handling techniques
Environmental hazards
Manual handling techniques
Organisational policies and procedures
Personal hygiene
Procedures for reporting injuries and accidents
Relevant legislative and regulatory requirements
Ropes and knots
Safety precautions
Select harness, pre-use inspection, don and properly fit the harness
Select fall protection equipment, pre-use checks and operation
WHS Act & Regulations, Codes of Practice and Australian Standards
• Risk management
• Legal requirements and ramifications of team activities
Safety precautions
• Non-operational and operational communication processes
• The four components of a fall protection system
(anchor, body support, connecting)
• Specialty systems that combine components of a fall arrest system
• Duties of a height safety supervisor
• Rescue response and capability
• Record keeping
• Communication is maintained and clear throughout rescue exercises
• Archer systems checks
• Establish and monitor anchors

Course prerequisite
The following courses are prerequisite for government departments, statutory authorities or organisations that have responsibility for the delivery of firefighting and fire management services.
HLTAID003 Provide first aid
In addition, 3M Australia recommends that all students hold a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment in RIIWHS204E Work safely at heights or equivalent unit.
Course assessment
Students will be assessed to determine their competency in these courses both theoretically and practically. The theory assessment consists of multiple choice and short answer questions. The practical assessment will require students to demonstrate supervisory skills in selecting, using and maintaining height safety equipment and resolve various rescue scenarios.

Demonstrate skills in the following:
• Complete a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS)
• Set up an exclusion zone
Pre-use inspection of fall arrest equipment
• Select harness; properly fit the harness and perform buddy checks
• Correct rigging of anchorage straps
• Ascent and descent techniques
• Emergency self-rescue
• Ascent and descent thru a redirection
• Build mechanical advantage systems
• Reporting information
• Interpersonal skills
• Clean-up work area
• Build mechanical advantage systems
• Clean-up work area
On successful completion students will be issued with: Statement of Attainment in PUASAR022 Participate in a rescue operation;
PUATEA001 Work in a team; PUATEA002 Work autonomously; RIIRIS201E Conduct local risk control and RIIRIS301E Apply risk management processes
Course duration
24 hours over 3 days (Initial)
12 hours over 1.5 days (Refresher)
(The times noted above includes a break.)
Where delivered as a refresher, the delivery time is reduced and assessment time remains the same.
