calls using a normal cordless or corded telephone.
With the Adaptor you can also:
•Continue to make and receive regular "landline" calls – calls
that don't use Skype
•Make Skype calls from your mobile/cell phone even when
you are away from your computer
• Switch between a Skype call and a regular landline call
• Use the Adaptor as an answering machine for both Skype
calls and landline calls
For last-minute information, please see the readme.txt file
installed with the Phone Adaptor.

4. Troubleshooting
The first step in troubleshooting is to read the readme.txt file that
appears in the Zoom Phone Adaptor program group. This file
contains a list of known issues for the current Adaptor driver
version.
To find the driver version, right-click on the Zoom Agent icon (the
green telephone in the Windows taskbar) and select About.
The Adaptor stops working
If the Zoom Phone Adaptor was working properly and suddenly
stops working (for instance, if it stops responding to incoming
rings or won’t provide a Skype dial tone) try the following
common fix:
1 Quit the Zoom Agent (right click the green telephone in the
right corner of the Taskbar and select Quit).
2 Quit the Skype application.
3 Unplug the Adaptor from the USB port.
4 Wait 30 seconds.
5 Plug the Adaptor back into the USB port.
6 Start Skype.
7 Start the Zoom Agent.
The wrong adaptor was installed
If you plug in the Zoom Phone Adaptor on a Windows XP SP2
PC prior to installing the software, the adaptor will be incorrectly
installed as a SmartLink USB Modem.
Simply install the Zoom Phone Adaptor software with the Phone
Adaptor unplugged, and then install the Adaptor.
23
The Adaptor is not responding to incoming calls
There are several reasons why the Zoom Phone Adaptor may
not function.
•The Adaptor may not work properly with some 4-wire (multi-
line) phones.
•Make sure the Adaptor is connected to the PC and the Zoom
Agent is running (there should be a green phone icon in the
right corner of the Windows taskbar).
•Make sure the handset is connected to the PHONE jack on
the Adaptor and NOT the LINE jack
•Some telephones require a battery to be installed in order to
ring. If your handset supports a battery, make sure there is a
good battery installed.
There is no dial tone in the handset connected to the
Adaptor
Check to make sure that the telephone is connected to the
PHONE jack on the Zoom Phone Adaptor.
I cannot hear Skype calls on the telephone handset
•This problem may occur if you move the Adaptor from one
USB port on your computer to another one.
To restore the sound, just unplug the Adaptor, wait ten
seconds or more, and plug the Adaptor back in.
•Check to make sure that Skype is configured to use the
Zoom Virtual Audio Device as its Microphone and
Speakers (earlier versions of Skype refer to the Audio In
and Audio Out Sound Devices).
Follow these steps:
1 Double-click the Skype icon in the Windows taskbar.
24
2 From the Tools menu, select Options:
3 In the left menu pane select Audio Settings (Sound
Devices in earlier versions of Skype).
4Check the Microphone and Speakers list boxes (Audio
In and Audio Out boxes in earlier versions) and make
sure Zoom Virtual Audio Device is selected.
Click Save to close the dialog box.
25
Call Forwarding is not working properly
•Make sure that a telephone cable is plugged in between the
Zoom Phone Adaptor LINE jack and the landline phone jack.
•Make sure call forwarding is configured properly on the
Zoom Agent Call handling tab (see page
17). Try to dial the
telephone number as you have entered it there.
•Make sure your computer is not going into sleep mode, since
sleep mode will prevent call forwarding from working.
Toll Bypass is not working properly
•Make sure that a telephone cord is connected between the
Zoom Phone Adaptor LINE jack and the landline phone jack.
•Make sure Toll Bypass is configured properly on the Zoom
Agent Call handling tab (see page
21).
•Make sure Skype version 2.5.xx (3.6 for Vista) or higher is
used on both sides.
•Make sure your computer is not going into sleep mode, since
sleep mode will prevent toll bypass from working.
A friend called me from her office, and when I pressed #1 to
put her on hold, she was disconnected instead.
It may not be possible to use #1 to hold calls to or from certain
phone systems, such as some business PBXes.
The Skype Username does not display on the handset
Make sure that your telephone has support for Caller ID name +
number display.
Note that some phones display numbers only and some phones
display the name ONLY if the name is stored in the telephone’s
address book. In this case, store the Skype user name and
speed dial number in the telephone’s address book so the Skype
user name can display.

Regulatory Information
U.S. FCC Part 68 Statement
This equipment complies with Part 68 of the FCC rules and the requirements
adopted by the ACTA. The unit bears a label on the back which contains among
other information a product identifier in the format US:AAAEQ##TXXXX. If
requested, this number must be provided to the telephone company.
This equipment uses the following standard jack types for network connection:
RJ11C.
This equipment contains an FCC compliant modular jack. It is designed to be
connected to the telephone network or premises wiring using compatible modular
plugs and cabling which comply with the requirements of FCC Part 68 rules.
The Ringer Equivalence Number, or REN, is used to determine the number of
devices which may be connected to the telephone line. An excessive REN may
cause the equipment to not ring in response to an incoming call. In most areas,
the sum of the RENs of all equipment on a line should not exceed five (5.0).
In the unlikely event that this equipment causes harm to the telephone network,
the telephone company can temporarily disconnect your service. The telephone
company will try to warn you in advance of any such disconnection, but if
advance notice isn't practical, it may disconnect the service first and notify you as
soon as possible afterwards. In the event such a disconnection is deemed
necessary, you will be advised of your right to file a complaint with the FCC.
From time to time, the telephone company may make changes in its facilities,
equipment, or operations which could affect the operation of this equipment. If
this occurs, the telephone company is required to provide you with advance
notice so you can make the modifications necessary to obtain uninterrupted
service.
There are no user serviceable components within this equipment. See Warranty
flyer for repair or warranty information.
It shall be unlawful for any person within the United States to use a computer or
other electronic device to send any message via a telephone facsimile unless
such message clearly contains, in a margin at the top or bottom of each
transmitted page or on the first page of the transmission, the date and time it is
sent and an identification of the business, other entity, or individual sending the
message and the telephone number of the sending machine or of such business,
other entity, or individual. The telephone number provided may not be a 900
number or any other number for which charges exceed local or long distance
transmission charges. Telephone facsimile machines manufactured on and after
December 20, 1992, must clearly mark such identifying information on each
transmitted message. Facsimile modem boards manufactured on and after
December 13, 1995, must comply with the requirements of this section.
This equipment cannot be used on public coin phone service provided by the
telephone company. Connection to Party Line Service is subject to state tariffs.
Contact your state public utility commission, public service commission, or
corporation commission for more information.
U.S. FCC Part 15 Emissions Statement
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B
digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to
provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential
installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency
and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause
harmful interference to radio communications.
27
However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular
installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or
television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and
on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the
following measures:
•
Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
•
Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.
•
Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which
the receiver is connected.
•
Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help.
Industry Canada Emissions Statement
This Class B digital apparatus meets all requirements of the Canadian

Industry Canada CS03 Statement
Notice: The Industry Canada label identifies certified equipment. This certification
means that the equipment meets telecommunications network protective,
operational and safety requirements as prescribed in the appropriate Terminal
Equipment Technical Requirements document(s). The Department does not
guarantee the equipment will operate to the user's satisfaction.
Before installing the equipment, users should ensure that it is permissible to be
connected to the facilities of the local telecommunications company. The
equipment must also be installed using an acceptable method of concern. The
customer should be aware that compliance with the above conditions may not
prevent degradation of service in some situations.
Repairs to certified equipment should be coordinated by a representative
designated by the supplier. Any repairs or alterations made by the user to this
equipment, or equipment malfunctions, may give the telecommunications
company cause to request the user to disconnect the equipment.
Users should ensure for their own protection that the electrical ground
connections of the power utility, telephone lines and internal metallic water pipe
system, if present, are connected together. This precaution may be particularly
important in rural areas. Caution: Users should not attempt to make such
connections themselves, but should contact the appropriate electric inspection
authority, or electrician, as appropriate.
Notice: The Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) assigned to each terminal device
provides an indication of the maximum number of terminals allowed to be
connected to a telephone interface. The termination on an interface may consist
of any combination of devices subject only to the requirement that the sum of the
Ringer Equivalence Numbers of all the devices does not exceed 5.
Electrostatic Discharge Statement
The unit may require resetting after a severe electrostatic discharge event.
