CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 HOW TO READ AND USE THE USE AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
This Use and Maintenance Manual provides information on the utilisation, installation and maintenance of electronic steam generators VAP 8,
VAP 8A and water softener AD 8, made by Zhermack S.p.A.
• The equipment must be used in compliance
with that specified in this Manual: it is therefore recommended that the manual is read carefully prior to installation and start-up. Make sure that you read the entire manual and pay particular attention to messages written in bold type or items highlighted by boxes and/or symbols, which highlight dangerous situations or requiring caution (see paragraph 1.2).
• The respect of standards and recommendations
shown in this Manual will ensure safe use of the equipment and appropriate interventions on the same.
• The “Use and Maintenance Manual” is an integral
part of the equipment: it should therefore be kept together with the equipment so that it can be consulted as and when necessary (in a secure dry place away from sunlight, atmospheric agents, etc.) throughout the working life of the equipment, even when the equipment is sold or finally dismantled.
• It is advised to keep the Manual constantly
updated, integrating any amendments, additions or modifications made by the Manufacturer. Any notes or comments should be made on the blank pages at the rear of the Manual (see Attachments: Notes).
• Use the Manual in a way that its content is not
damaged.
• Do not remove, tear or write on the Manual for
any reason.
• If the Manual is lost or damaged and therefore
becomes illegible, request a new Manual from the
Manufacturer. This “Use and Maintenance Manual” is aimed at operators in order to allow correct use of the product. The Manual contains all useful information for declared used of the equipment; in particular the operator will find instructions and indications regarding:
• correct installation of the equipment;
• a functional description of the equipment and all
parts;
• commissioning;
• correct programmed maintenance;
• attention to the most elementary safety and
accident-prevention regulations. This Manual is divided into 9 chapters, each referring to a specific subject inherent to the entire equipment.
The attachments are found at the rear of the manual. They complete the documentation.
1.2 TERMS AND SYMBOLS USED
It is fundamental that maximum attention is paid to the following symbols and their meaning because they highlight important information such as, critical situations, practical advice or straightforward information. Consult this page if in doubt regarding the meaning of the symbol when reading the Manual.
• Any operations carried out without compliance to instructions or tampering with equipment parts, which can cause serious injury to persons, will be highlighted with:
DANGER! This symbol refers to Safety Standards that MUST be followed in order to guarantee your safety and that of others and to prevent damage to the equipment.
• Critical situations concerning dangerous areas, situations or operations in which failure to comply with the instructions may render the warranty null and void, cause damage to equipment, connected components or the surrounding area, are highlighted by the symbol:

2.1 LIABILITY
Failure to comply with the instructions contained in this Use and maintenance manual relieves the Manufacturer from any liability. For any information not included or that cannot be deduced from the Manual, consult the Manufacturer directly.

In particular, if equipment maintenance is carried out in a way that is not in compliance with the instructions supplied, or in a way to jeopardise integrity or modify features, Zhermack S.p.A. is relieved from any liability inherent to safety of persons and faulty operation of the equipments.
2.2 WARRANTY: GENERAL STANDARDS
Find the Warranty Certificate and the Identification Form attached to this Use and Maintenance Manual, which must be filled in completely. Generally the warranty is rendered null and void by the following:
• improper use of the equipment;
• incorrect installation;
• negligence of envisioned maintenance;
• modifications or interventions not authorised by the Manufacturer (especially on safety devices);
• use of non-original spare parts.
The customer is responsible for ensuring that the product delivered to the manufacturer is properly packaged. The manufacturer is not liable for any defects, malfunctions or damage to the product due to the use of packaging that is not suitable or of the same or higher quality than that used for the original delivery.
As of this moment Zhermack S.p.A. is relieved from all liability if any type of modification or tampering is made on the equipment without previous written authorisation from the Manufacturer. Consequently, any repairs made by unauthorised staff, use of non-original spare parts or failure to comply with the installation standards specified in this manual shall immediately render the warranty null or void.
2.3 AUTHORISED STAFF
The staff in charge of the equipment is divided into the following categories:
Operator - user Person trained to use the equipment. Person trained in use of the equipment. Performs all tasks involved in operation of the device, such as: use, cleaning, inspection and simple interventions linked to normal equipment use. The operator-user must operate with the equipment mounted according to that stated in this manual.
Before using the equipment or carrying out any intervention on it, the operator must read the entire manual carefully. This manual has been drawn up to provide the user with essential information on rational, safe use of the equipment. The user must comply with the information given at all times. The user must also use the worksheets, attached to this manual, to keep a record of maintenance interventions, component replacement as well as make notes regarding anomalous functioning.
Maintenance technician authorised by Zhermack S.p.A. Person who operates in all operating conditions and at all safety levels to perform repairs/ mechanical and electric adjustments, periodic preventive maintenance and replacement of any components.
2.4 GENERAL SAFETY PROVISIONS
The operator must comply with the advice and warnings given below in order to ensure safe, long­lasting equipment performance:
• do not allow untrained staff to use the equipment;
• prepare an optimal worktop, making sure that the operational space is free from obstacles, clean and has suitable lighting;
• avoid distractions when using the equipment;
• it is prohibited to work objects with features different from those for which the equipment has been designed;
• in the event of a malfunction follow the advice given in this manual; if in doubt, stop the equipment and contact your Authorised After­Sales Centre immediately;
• do not open equipment compartments containing electric parts;
• before carrying out any cleaning, routine and/or extraordinary maintenance, make sure that the equipment has been unplugged from the mains power supply;
• do not replace the power supply cable or tamper with the supplied plug; to replace the same due to damage or wear, only contact the Authorised After-Sales Centre;
• always make sure that there are no foreign bodies inside the work area. These could prevent damage to the equipment and/or injury to the staff;
• do not use petrol or flammable solvents as detergents; use only non-flammable, non­corrosive and non-toxic substances. (see par. 8.1).
• Never use a malfunctioning equipment and always inform the Maintenance Manager of any faults;
• High temperature steam can cause burns where the unit is used improperly.
• Do not direct the jet of steam from the gun at sources of electricity and/or at people.
• (VAP 8) never unscrew the water filler plug if there is steam in the boiler.
• If you do not intend to use the equipment for some time always disconnect it from the power supply.

VAP 8A electronic steam generator with direct connection to mains water supply (or to an external tank), designed for steam cleaning or hot water cleaning of semi-finished odontotechny products.
AD 8 water softener, indispensable where the VAP 8A steam generator is connected directly to the mains water supply.

A valve knob (25) is installed on the AD 8 water softener: this can be adjusted to four different positions:
POSITION 1: Used during routine operation. POSITION 2: Used during steam release and
salt (1 kg) loading for softener
regeneration. POSITION 3: Used during regeneration. POSITION 4: Used during backflow.
3.4 IDENTIFICATION DATA
Fig. C: the equipment described in this manual has a plate giving identification data of the same and the Manufacturer:
• Have the machine serviced by the Manufacturer at least once a year.
• (VAP 8A) if the overpressure warning light comes on repeatedly, switch off the machine via the main switch and contact an Authorised Service Centre.
• (VAP 8A) if the safety valve opens, switch off the machine via the main switch and contact an Authorised Service Centre.
• The AD 8 water softener has been designed to operate at a working pressure of between 1 and 8 bar and must only be supplied with cold drinking water.
• To regenerate the water softener use only NaCl; acid or base substances, such as solvents and various chemical products must not be used.
• The resins contained in the water softener are necessary for proper operation and therefore must not be removed.
• The water softener must be installed in indoor areas with an ambient temperature higher than 0°C so as to prevent freezing of the water.
• Install the water softener in a place where it is protected from accidental knocks: this prevents damage to the cover, valves and taps.
• To prevent damage to the water infeed pump make sure that water pressure does not exceed 3-4 bar. It is advisable to use a pressure reducer calibrated between 1 and 2 bar.
• Wear protective gloves and eye goggles when using the steam generator.
• Personnel using the steam generator must wear protective eye goggles.
No other persons must be allowed near
the work area as they could be hit by flying dirt, dust or steam.
• Zhermack S.p.A. cannot be held responsible for any damage to the equipment owing to incorrect maintenance performed by unskilled staff or maintenance that does not comply with that stated in this manual.
• As of this moment Zhermack S.p.A. is relieved from any injury/damage to persons/objects that should occur following any different use and use not declared in this manual.
In the event of a fire - no matter how small
- inside the equipment or nearby, only use powder extinguishers. Do not use water.
CHAPTER 3: DESCRIPTION OF THE EQUIPMENT
3.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE EQUIPMENT
This manual describes the following equipment items:

• electronic operation with on-gauge pressure display;
• electronic control of minimum water level with element shutdown device and warning light;
• working pressure switch;
• dual safety device:
- overpressure switch with element shutdown device;
- warning light;
• safety valve;
• stainless steel 4-litre boiler with water refill of about 2.5 litres;
• safety fuse;
• (VAP 8A) 2 work modes are available:
- high temperature steam from gun;
- hot water from gun;
• (VAP 8A) quantity of water or steam exiting the gun can be adjusted;
• (VAP 8A) connection to the mains water supply completely managed by an electronic microprocessor device.
• (VAP 8) boiler is filled with water manually.
The AD 8, instead, is a water softener. Utilisation of the AD 8 is advisable where the VAP 8A is connected to a mains water supply. The AD 8 softener has been designed to operate at working pressures of 1 - 8 bar. It has a stainless steel body. It should only be supplied with cold drinking water. Regeneration must be carried out with NaCl only (common cooking salt).

The frequency with which regeneration needs to be carried out depends on how often the AD 8 softener is used and the degree of purity of the water. The installer will be able to provide information regarding the hardness of the water at the installation site.

The equipment has been built in compliance with the EEC Directives stated in the attached “CE Declaration of Conformity. Use the identification data to request spare parts, information and After­Sales Assistance from authorised centres. If the plate should deteriorate with use and become illegible, even partially, request a replacement from the Manufacturer stating all data.
Do not remove and/or ruin the plate so that the equipment identification data can be recognised at all times.
3.3.1 ON-EQUIPMENT LABELS AND SYMBOLS
The following symbols are applied on the machine:
ATTENZIONE! Danger of an electrical current. Do not open doors or remove PROTECTIon before you have disconnected the plug from the electrical source.
On the VAP 8 there is a label on the water filler plug which says:
EXTREME CAUTION! HOT STEAM! (EXTREME CAUTION! VERY HOT PRESSURISED STEAM!).
This label informs the user that there is a danger of high temperature steam escaping when the water filler plug is unscrewed: always proceed with maximum caution when unscrewing the plug and observe the instructions given in this handbook.
CHAPTER 4: TECHNICAL FEATURES
4.1 TECHNICAL FEATURES AND FUNCTIONING PRINCIPLE

CHAPTER 5: TRANSPORT AND HANDLING
5.1 GENERAL WARNINGS
• In order to prevent injury/damage to persons/objects, pay great care when handling the equipment, scrupulously complying with all precautions and instructions contained in the following paragraphs.
• The generator must be handled and/or moved by at least 2 (two) people, holding the appliance at the bottom.
5.2 PACKAGING AND UNPACKING
Fig. D: All material is carefully controlled by the Manufacturer before delivery. On receiving the equipment, make sure that it has not been damaged during transport and that the packaging has not been tampered with, resulting in missing parts. Should any damage or missing parts be noted, inform the Dealer and the Carrier immediately by forwarding photographic evidence. The packaging, made up of a cardboard box with expanded plastic internal protections, contains:
• the equipment VAP 8 or VAP 8A and eventually the softener AD 8;
• the material supplied (see par. 4.2.1);
• the Use and Maintenance Manual.
• It is recommended that you keep the original packaging (see paragraph 5.3).
• The customer is responsible for ensuring that the product delivered to the manufacturer is properly packaged. The manufacturer is not liable for any defects, malfunctions or damage to the product due to the use of packaging that is not suitable or of the same or higher quality than that used for the original delivery.
5.3 TRANSPORT AND HANDLING
Should it be necessary to move the equipment proceed as follows:
• disconnect the equipment from the mains power supply;
• if necessary, empty the boiler (see section 8.3.1);
• (VAP 8A) disconnect the water softener hose (22)
- if any - from the water inlet connector (20);
• disconnect the other softener hose (23) from the water supply tap;
• hold the equipment, always keeping it in a vertical position. Regarding this, pay attention to the weight and clearance of the equipment (see par. 4.2.2), in order to prevent any type of damage occurring due to the failure of considering these values;
• pack the equipment in the original packaging. If this is not possible, take all necessary precautions to protect the equipment from knocks and drops, as the goods are transported at the owner’s risk.
Failure to comply with the rules stated above relieve the Manufacturer from any liability regarding equipment malfunctioning and consequently makes the warranty null and void. When shipping and/or delivering the equipment to an Authorised After-Sales Centre always enclose a copy of the purchase document and a copy of the properly filled­in identification form. If the equipment is transported by carrier, the Postal Service or rail, it is recommended to insure the shipment.
5.4 DISPOSAL / DISMANTLING
When disposing of the packaging material the user must follow the regulations in force in the country of use relative to the following materials:
• wood/paper: non-polluting materials, but must be re-cycled correctly;
• polystyrene/plastic: pollutant material, do not burn (toxic fumes) or dispose of in the environment. Dispose of these materials in compliance with the regulations in force in the country of use.
If the equipment is to be dismantled, the operator must be in charge of dismantling, elimination and re-cycling of the following materials in compliance with the EEC Directives and the laws in force in the country of use:

• plastic parts; steel parts; glass parts; insulated electric cables; rubber parts.
• there are no toxic or corrosive substances.
The device must not be disposed of as urban waste. At the end of its working life, it must be taken to a waste separation and recycling centre in compliance with European Directive no. 2002/96/EC or in accordance with the legislation in force in the country of sale.
CHAPTER 6:
INSTALLATION AND COMMISSIONING
6.1 WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS
Before carrying out installation, make sure that all safety conditions exist and follow the indications given below carefully.
6.2 ACCEPTED ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Unless stated otherwise, at the time of ordering, it is intended that the equipment must be envisioned to function regularly in the following environmental conditions:

Conditions different to those prescribed can cause anomalies or sudden breakdown. Lighting in the installation area of the equipment must be sufficient to guarantee good visibility in all points of the equipment. Luminosity not less than 200 lux must be guaranteed. The lighting must be uniform without reflections, which could dazzle the operator.
The equipment itself cannot cause explosions or fire: the equipment is not prepared and/or designed to operate in environments with explosive atmosphere or with the risk of fire.
The working area lighting plant is an important factor for the safety of persons and the quality of work. In Italy this subject is governed by a Ministerial Decree that clearly determines the average level of prescribed lighting. In other countries the regulations in force are valid regarding accident-prevention and hygiene in the workplace.
6.3 SPACE NECESSARY FOR USE
The choice of the place and space required for installation is an important factor for the quality of work and safety and for correct maintenance
activities. This area must not only be spacious enough to allow for optimum equipment operation
- also during cleaning and maintenance phases ­but must also be well lit, aired, not dusty and not exposed to direct sunlight. Note also that the unit must be positioned so the connection plug can be handled/manipulated with ease.
6.3.1 WORKTOP
Fig. E - BENCH VERSION The equipment has been designed for operation on a rigid worktop parallel to the floor. Suitable worktops include service furniture (where the operator is standing) or modelling tables (where work is done sitting down). All worktops must be checked for stability.
Fig. F - WALL-MOUNTED VERSION The equipment is also designed to be wall-mounted.
Before installation:
- make sure that there are no power sockets or other objects that may be damaged by accidental contact with steam/water located underneath the appliance;
- make sure the holes are aligned horizontally.
Once drilling is over, introduce the plugs in the holes and then screw in the screws but not all the way: let them protrude from the wall by 8-10 mm. Check that the machine is stable before using it.
The right plugs for installation must be chosen based on the weight of the appliance, shown in section 4.2.2, and the type of wall it is installed on.
Install the AD 8 water softener (where applicable) in a place where ambient temperature is higher than 0°C so as to stop the water in it freezing; the installation site should also protect the softener against accidental knocks and be perfectly horizontal.
6.4 CONNECTION TO ENERGY SOURCES
The connection is made using the power supply cable. Check:
• that mains power supply voltage and frequency
correspond to those indicated on the identification plate (an incorrect power supply voltage may damage the equipment);
• that the power supply mains has a suitable earth
connection.
Do not tamper with the power supply cable and relative plug. For replacement of the same due to damage and/or wear, only contact Authorised After-Sales Centres.

An earth connection is mandatory. If an extension must be used temporarily, it must be in compliance with the standards in force in the country of use.
6.5 FIRST-TIME USE VAP 8
The examples shown in the illustrations refer
to the steam generator installed on a work bench.
Fig. 1: Place the equipment on the work bench. Connect the lead to the power mains: ensure that connection is effected as per the instructions given in section 6.4. Fig. 2: Unscrew the water filler plug (15) and fill the boiler with water. If it overflows clean the steam generator thoroughly, then screw the plug back on.
• To prevent limescale build-up which might damage the steam generator we recommend that you use distilled water.

6.5.1 FILLING THE BOILER WITH WATER - VAP 8
Fig. 4: The first time the VAP 8 steam generator is switched on or when the water in the boiler is running out, the “water low” warning light (4) comes on; simultaneously the element is switched off, thus causing the “element on” indicator light (5) to go out. The element will remain off until the boiler is refilled. To fill the boiler with water proceed as follows:
• switch off the element via the main switch (14);
• release the steam in the boiler by pressing the gun trigger (10);
• unscrew, slowly and cautiously, the plug (18) so as to release any residual steam in the boiler;
• fill the boiler with water;
• replace the plug and tighten it securely (18);
• turn the element switch (14) to ON.
To prevent temperature imbalance, do not
use cold water when filling a boiler that is still hot.
Failure to comply with any of the above­stated equipment installation regulations can lead to equipment malfunctioning and render the warranty null and void.
6.6 FIRST-TIME USE VAP 8A
To prevent the formation of scale that may
in the long term affect correct operation or even damage the VAP 8A steam generator, connect the appliance to the mains water supply via the AD 8 water softener.

Before connecting up the hoses, remove any rubber plugs inserted in the inlet/outlet connectors on the AD 8 water softener.

Connection to the water softener must only be effected by qualified, authorised personnel.

Fig. 8: To ensure that the resin in the exchanger gives the required performance rinse the softener by turning the knob (25) to position number “4” (backflow position: see fig. B) for at least 10 minutes until the water outflow is perfectly clear. When doing this direct the water into the open siphon (see fig. 7). Fig. 9: Regenerate the water softener as explained in section 6.6.1.
Improper regeneration of the water softener can damage the steam generator. If you have any doubts, please contact properly qualified personnel.

Make sure water pressure does not exceed 3/4 bar; it is advisable to fit a pressure reducer calibrated to 1 - 2 bar.

• When filling the first time, it is normal for the pump to make some noise.
• It is advisable to install a tap between the mains water supply and the water inlet hose of the softener so that the water flow can be closed off if necessary.

Failure to comply with any of the above­stated equipment installation regulations can lead to equipment malfunctioning and render the warranty null and void.
6.6.1 REGENERATING THE AD 8 WATER SOFTENER

Regeneration frequency depends on how often the AD 8 softener is used and the degree of purity of the water. The installer
will be able to provide information regarding the hardness of the water at the installation site.
To regenerate the AD 8 water softener proceed as follows:
• turn the water softener knob (25) to position 2. Loosen the lid knob (27) and wait for the pressure
to be released.
• Remove the lid by unscrewing the knob (27), then introduce the salt.
• Clean off any salt or resin that may have deposited on the lid seal, replace the lid and screw it
back in place properly.
• Turn the knob (25) to position 3, and let the salt water drain
from the hose (26) until it becomes fresh (this
takes about 40 minutes).
• Turn the knob (25) to position 4, wait about 30 seconds, then bring the knob (30) to position 1.
In the intervening 30 seconds the unit will not be
supplied with softened water.
• When regeneration is being carried out the steam generator connected to the softener is still supplied with water, but the latter is not softened.
• To maintain AD 8 water softener performance use the chart enclosed with this manual to record regeneration data.
Use only NaCl (common cooking salt) to regenerate the softener. Do not use acid or basic substances, solvents or chemical products.
6.7 DECLARED USE
The VAP 8 and VAP 8A steam generators have been designed to generate steam or hot water to clean semi-finished odontotechny products. The AD 8 water softener has been designed to soften the mains drinking water to ensure long-lasting performance of the VAP 8A steam generator.
6.8 NON-DECLARED/PROHIBITED USE
Using the equipment for any purpose not considered in paragraph regarding “Declared use” shall be considered improper and thus forbidden. The improper use of the equipment renders the warranty null and void and Zhermack Spa declines all liability for any damage to objects and injury to operators or third parties.
The main reasons for which the warranty is rendered null and void are given in paragraph 2.2 and in the “Warranty Certificate” attached to this Manual.
CHAPTER 7: USING THE EQUIPMENT
7.1 WARNINGS
The equipment must not be used with any of its parts disassembled: before using the equipment make sure that all its components are properly in place.
To ensure that work is done in absolute safety always make sure that you follow the described procedures with caution.
7.2 SAFETY SYSTEMS
To ensure optimum working reliability, Zhermack S.p.A. employs only top quality materials and components for the manufacture of the equipment. The equipment is also thoroughly tested before delivery. All materials are of only the highest quality and are checked on arrival at our plant, during storage and when they are used so as to guarantee a product that is free from damage, deterioration and/or malfunctions. In particular, the steam generators, in addition to the safety fuse and safety valve, have:
1. On the VAP 8A. Automatic pump shutdown if the pump overheats because of high pressure or lack of water. To reset the pump proceed as follows:
- turn the element switch to OFF (14);
- switch off the machine via the main switch (13) and remove the plug from the power socket;
- let the pump cool down, operation will resume automatically as soon as the temperature falls back within the safe operating limits.
2. On the VAP 8 and VAP 8A.
Internal safety pressure switch, which shuts down the machine if working pressure exceeds 8 bar; in this event the overpressure warning light comes on. To reset the machine proceed as follows:
- release pressure via the gun until it drops to 1 bar;
- turn the element switch to OFF (14);
- switch off the machine via the main switch;
- switch the machine back on.

• If the overpressure warning light comes on repeatedly, switch off the steam generator via the main switch and contact an Authorised Service Centre.
• If the safety valve should open proceed as follows:
- turn the element switch to OFF (14);
- release the pressure via the gun until it drops to 1 bar;
- switch off the steam generator via the main switch and contact an Authorised Service Centre.
7.3 START-UP AND OPERATION
If you are using the kit (XR0020065 gun kit), make sure the gasket at the end of the gun is present. If there is no gasket, replace it with the one in the kit, making sure the nozzles are correctly inserted to avoid flow­back of water and/or steam towards the user.
After setting up the equipment proceed as follows:
• On the VAP 8 - Fig. 15
Switch the element on via the relevant switch (14): the on-switch LED comes on. The “water low” warning light (4) and element ON indicator light (5) come on simultaneously. After five seconds the “water low” warning light goes out automatically while the element ON indicator light (5) stays on until pressure reaches 8 bar. If, after 5 seconds the “water low” warning light (4) remains on, the boiler must be filled with water (see section
6.6.1). Press the trigger button (10) on the gun
and the steam exits the gun nozzle. Adjust steam outflow as desired by acting on the knob (9); rotate anticlockwise to increase flow and clockwise to decrease. When the steam starts flowing out of the gun the pressure in the boiler drops and the element ON indicator light (5) comes back on.
• On the VAP 8A - Fig. 16
Switch on pump and element by acting on switch (14); the LED on the switch comes on, the “water low” warning light (4) comes on and the pump starts working. When the water level in the boiler reaches the minimum level the indicator light (4) goes out and, at the same time, the element ON indicator light (5) comes on and stays on until pressure reaches 8 bar. Select the work mode by acting on switch (18). Press the trigger button (10) on the gun and the water (or steam) will exit the gun nozzle. Adjust steam outflow as desired by acting on the knob (9); rotate anticlockwise to increase flow and clockwise to decrease. Once steam starts flowing out of the gun the pressure in the boiler drops and the element ON indicator light (5) comes back on. To deliver steam from the fixed nozzle, place the object being processed under the nozzle (1) and press the fixed nozzle button (6).
• When using the fixed nozzle, the operator should touch the special metallic disk (7, Fig. A) located on the side of the appliance, so as to discharge any static electricity.
• The steam generator can, however, be used before the “element ON” indicator light goes out; in this case, though, the pressure displayed on the gauge will be below 8 bar.
• If you are in possession of a VAP 8A note that it is inadvisable to use the water function for prolonged periods of time.
• Always empty the boiler if you do not expect to use the steam generator for some time (see section 8.3.1).
7.4 RESIDUAL RISKS
Residual risks are:
• a danger that cannot be totally eliminated through
design and the application of safety devices;
• a potential danger that cannot be highlighted.
The steam generator produces steam or hot water and therefore works at temperatures of over 100°C; the residual risks are thus associated with the following situations:
• Steam jets exiting an accidentally triggered gun that has not been properly connected to its support could cause burns.
• Allowing work to be carried out on the interior of the machine by unauthorised personnel or carrying out such work with the plug inserted in the mains socket.
To prevent accidents always observe the
instructions in this Manual. Should you have any doubts at all please contact the Manufacturer or your Authorised Servicing Centre.
The steam generator, where the user fails
to observe the instructions contained in this manual, is a potential source of explosion or fire. Should you have any doubts whatsoever, always contact the Manufacturer or an Authorised Service Centre.
The above-mentioned dangers are indicated by special labels attached to the equipment, as described in sub-section 3.4.1.
CHAPTER 8: MAINTENANCE
8.1 CLEANING THE EQUIPMENT
The equipment exterior can normally be kept clean just by wiping it with a dry cloth. If necessary, wet the cloth just a little water or use a non-degreasing detergent (see section 2.4). The operator must

ensure that the equipment is kept clean and free from any foreign bodies such as dirt, water, non­conducting liquids etc. Cleaning should be carried out at the end of every work session and must be done with the equipment switched OFF and stable. To clean the water tray (8), pull out the bottom part so as to detach it from the appliance.
If you need to clean the interior of the unit contact an Authorised Service Centre.
• Before cleaning the equipment exterior always turn the main switch to OFF. It is strictly forbidden to clean the equipment while it is connected to the mains power supply.
• Never use inflammable, corrosive, alkaline or toxic liquids when cleaning the equipment.
If using compressed air for cleaning,
always wear a face protection visor, keep people away from the appliance, as they may be struck by the material being sprayed off, and ensure a minimum pressure of 2 bars.
8.2 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
Once the equipment has been cleaned (see paragraph 8.1), the operator must check for worn, damaged or loose parts. If any such situations are detected, contact the Authorised After-Sales Centre.
If any of the previously-described situations should occur, it is prohibited to re-start the equipment before the problems have been solved.
In particular, before moving away from the equipment, the operator detecting problems of any nature must place a sign on the it indicating that equipment maintenance is in progress and that use is prohibited (EC-compliant signs can be purchased from the relevant suppliers). Routine maintenance, cleaning and correct equipment use are essential factors in guaranteeing long-lasting equipment performance and safety.
Equipment safety devices/guards must
never be removed except for repair and maintenance purposes. Such items must be replaced as soon as the situation which led to their removal no longer exists and in any case before the equipment is used again.
8.3 EXTRAORDINARY MAINTENANCE
Extraordinary maintenance includes the repair of any accidental breakage and the replacement of worn or malfunctioning parts.
All electrical and mechanical interventions must only be performed by a Zhermack S.p.A.-authorised maintenance technician.
Any modification that alters equipment features from a safety and risk-prevention point of view can only be carried out by the Manufacturer who will then certify conformity of the equipment with safety standards. Therefore any modification or maintenance intervention not considered in this manual is to be considered prohibited. Any modification, tampering or repair performed by unauthorised staff along with the use of non-original spare parts relieve the Manufacturer from any liability. If the necessary maintenance interventions are not considered in this Use and Maintenance Manual, contact the Authorised After-Sales Centre.
8.3.1 EMPTYING THE WATER FROM THE BOILER
VAP 8 and VAP 8A are fitted with a plug (15) on the bottom of the boiler, accessible from the bottom of the appliance; to drain the water, place a container underneath the appliance and unscrew the plug. After emptying the appliance, replace the plug fitting (15) and make sure the gasket is intact.
To empty the VAP 8A boiler quickly proceed as follows:
- Turn the main switch (14) to off.
- Select the water function via the mode switch (18).
- Drain the water by pressing the gun trigger button (10).
If, instead, you are emptying completely the VAP 8 proceed as follows:
- Switch off the machine via the main switch (13) and disconnect the plug from the mains power socket.
- Wait for the equipment to cool down completely (this takes about 40 minutes).
- Unscrew the plug (15) located on the bottom of the appliance, and pour the water in the boiler into a suitable container.
- Replace the plug (15).
It is strictly forbidden to empty the machine as described above when it is switched on or under pressure. The Manufacturer cannot
be held liable for any damages caused by any failure to observe the above information and instructions.
8.3.2 GUN NOZZLE REPLACEMENT
To replace the nozzle proceed as follows:
- remove the old nozzle by pulling it outwards.
- make sure that the rubber seal is inserted correctly in its seat in the gun.

- insert the new nozzle: secure it by pushing the mobile lock ring all the way down.
8.4 RE-START AFTER LONG PERIOD OF INACTIVITY
If the equipment is re-started after a particularly long period of inactivity, operate as indicated in Chapter 6 regarding commissioning. If the equipment functions anomalously, act as described in Chapter 9 regarding “Diagnostics”. if the problem should persist or is not considered, contact the Authorised After-Sales Centre immediately.
8.5 HOW TO REQUEST AFTER-SALES ASSISTANCE
Choose one of the following options to request after-sales assistance:
1. contact the Authorised After-Sales Centre;
2. telephone the Zhermack S.p.A. After-Sales
Service at +39 0425 597611 and proceed as follows: give personal data (e.g. address and telephone number); state the information given on the equipment identification plate (see paragraph 3.4); explain the problem with the equipment clearly;
3. fax all of the information stated in the previous
point and the correctly filled-in identification form (see Attachment 10.3) to the following n° +39 0425 53596.
CHAPTER 9: DIAGNOSTICS
9.1 GENERAL WARNINGS
If any of the anomalies described below should occur, solve the problem, where allowed, with respect to all instructions contained in this manual. If the problem persists, contact the Authorised After-Sales Centre.
9.2 TROUBLESHOOTING
PROBLEM After switching on the equipment via
the main switch the LED on the key fails to come on.
CAUSE 1. The power cable is not plugged in.
2. There is no current to the socket.
3. Blown fuse.
4. Electrical fault.
REMEDY 1. Plug in the power cable.
2. Check the socket/electrical panel in
the building.
3. Replace the fuse (T 10 A).
4. Contact an Authorised Service Centre.
PROBLEM During start-up of the VAP 8 the
indicator light (4) stays on for longer than 5 seconds.
CAUSE 1. No water/not enough water in the
boiler.
2. Electrical fault.
REMEDY 1. Add distilled water to the boiler (see
section 6.6.1).
2. Contact an Authorised Service Centre.
PROBLEM The electric pump on the VAP 8A fails to
fill the boiler with water.
CAUSE 1. Automatic pump shutdown on
account of the overheating caused by high pressure or no water in the boiler.
REMEDY 1. Proceed as per point 1 of section 7.2.
PROBLEM Steam generator overpressure warning
light comes on.
CAUSE 1. Safety pressure switch has tripped
because pressure is higher than 8 bar, thus shutting down the machine.
2. Electrical fault. REMEDY 1. Proceed as per point 2 of section 7.2.
2. Contact an Authorised Service Centre.
PROBLEM Steam generator safety valve has
opened.
CAUSE 1. Steam generator malfunction. REMEDY 1. Switch off the equipment and contact
an Authorised Service Centre.
PROBLEM The pressure in the boiler drops
considerably when the gun trigger button is pressed or noise is heard inside the boiler when the element is on.
CAUSE 1. Low pressure inside the boiler due to
steam condensation.
REMEDY 1. Press the gun trigger for a few
seconds with the equipment on.
PROBLEM the pressure gauge indicates a pressure of more than 8 bars.
SOLUTION A certain difference from the nominal value is normal and is explained by the tolerances of the internal components (in this specific case, the pressure switch and pressure gauge). Operation at a higher pressure, even up to 9 bars, does not compromise boiler safety. In addition to the operational pressure switch, the steam generator is also fitted with a safety pressure switch which trips at 9.5 bars and a certified safety valve which trips at 12 bars. Moreover, the boiler is certified to resist up to 24 bars.
PROBLEM
there are drips from the fixed nozzle or gun.
SOLUTION drips from the fixed nozzle or gun may have two main causes. If the drips appear shortly after use, they are caused by condensation of the steam in the circuit and are normal. If the drips are continuous, they are most probably caused by

incorrect demineralisation of the water, leading to leaks of steam from the solenoid valve as a result of limescale or dirt.
PROBLEM
the steam generator is noisy.
SOLUTION some noises are normal and attributable to the technical characteristics of steam generators. When starting up the VAP 8 A for the first time, you may hear a sometimes loud noise caused by priming of the pump. During use of both the VAP 8 and VAP 8 A, it is normal to hear cracks or gurgles during the steam generation phase. During start-up, their intensity can be reduced by venting the air in the circuit by pressing the button on the gun or the fixed nozzle.

10.3 WARRANTY CERTIFICATE AND IDENTIFICATION FORM
1. With this document the Manufacturer certifies
that the product has been built correctly, top quality materials have been used and all inspections necessary for compliance with European Community Directives have been performed. The product is covered by a warranty period of 12 months from the date of delivery to the user. Proof of this date is provided from the purchase document and the copy of the identification form. These documents must be shipped to the After-Sales Centre with the equipment. Persons wishing to make use of the warranty must inform of the fault within 8 days of its discovery for the effects and purpose of art. 1495 of the Civil Code. The warranty is limited to replacement or repair of individual components or pieces with manufacturing defects and does not cover costs related to transfer of technical staff, transport, packaging etc. Breakdowns, faults or damage deriving from poor maintenance,

incorrect power supply, negligence, inexperience and other causes not imputable to the Manufacturer and parts subject to normal wear are not covered by the warranty. The warranty does not cover breakdowns caused by failure to carry out routine maintenance due to customer negligence. This warranty does not provide for any reimbursement for direct or indirect damages of any kind caused to persons or objects due to equipment inefficiency.
2. The warranty is automatically rendered null and void whenever the equipment is repaired, modified or tampered with by the purchaser or unauthorised third parties. The liability for damage caused by faulty products expires after 10 years from the date in which the Manufacturer put the products on the market, after this time it becomes the user’s responsibility, as envisioned by the 85/374/EEC Directive.
3. To have work carried out under warranty the purchaser must only contact the dealer, Manufacturer-authorised after-sales centres or the Manufacturer itself. The warranty gives the right for free replacement of faulty parts. It does not, however, give the right for replacement of the entire equipment.
4. In the case of disputes regarding application of the warranty, quality or conditions of the equipment delivered, the purchaser cannot suspend or delay total payment or payment of the instalments.
5. No reimbursement can be requested by the purchaser for loss of production.
6. The warranty is rendered null and void if: a. The equipment is damaged by a fall, exposure to fire, spilt liquids, lightening, natural disasters or, however, causes not imputable to manufacturing defects. b. Incorrect installation. c. Incorrect mains connection (incorrect power supply nominal voltage) or suitable protection devices have not been installed. d. The serial number has been removed, cancelled or altered.
7. The components to be replaced under warranty,
must be returned to Zhermack S.p.A. which will then send the appropriate spare parts. Any changed parts that are not returned will be charged.
8. The Manufacturer and the Dental Deposit do not
have to supply replacement equipments during the repair period.
9. For tax purposes spare parts will only be provided
under warranty where the relevant limitations set out in the terms and conditions of the warranty are respected.
10. For any other eventuality not provided for by this
Warranty Certificate and the regulations, consult the Italian Civil Code.
11. Invoices for labour, travel and call-out must be
paid on their receipt.
12. The manufacturer and the dealer will comply
with all data processing laws in force, including those relative to safety measures and in compliance with the specifications given in the data processing information sheet.
