Quick Reference Guide for Palm OS®
Welcome to ZAGAT TO GO!
ZAGAT TO GOSM provides offline access to
Restaurants and Nightlife guides that contain trusted
Zagat ratings and reviews. Guides are available for
more than 45 locales, covering more than 20,000
restaurants and nightspots. With over 200,000
surveyors, Zagat Survey is the world's leading provider
of consumer survey-based dining, lodgi ng, and lei sure
information.
Zagat provides information about restaurants in book
form, on the Internet at www.zagat.com
devices, on mobile phones, and on radio and TV.
Zagat also offers guides covering hotels, movies, golf,
shopping, and more.
This document contains instructions for subscribing to
ZAGAT TO GO and installing the application on your
Palm OS® handheld. It also shows you how to search
for information about a particular restaurant or nightlife
spot and browse lists of establishment s for detail s
about food/appeal, decor, service and co st. Final ly , it
shows you how to create a My Favorites list of the
establishments you like best, and how to add an
appointment at a particular establishment to your local
Palm™ Date Book.
Getting Help
When you are using ZAGAT TO GO on your Palm OS
device, you can access the main Help screen by
tapping the Zagat title (at the top of the Home screen
only), then selecting Help from the Help menu.
You may also see this icon on some screen s:

Device and System Requirements
You can install and use ZAGAT TO GO on any
Palm OS handheld that meets the following requirements:
OPERATING SYSTEM
Palm OS, version 4.0 or later
AVAILABLE MEMORY
At least 8 MB RAM; 430 K (free memory)
Additionally, your desktop computer must run the
following:
WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM
98, ME, XP, or 2000
APPLICATIONS
• Palm Desktop, version 4.0 or later
• HotSync Manager, version 3.0 or later
Installation Options
CD-ROM INSTALLATION
If you have a ZAGAT TO GO CD-ROM, use the CD-ROM to
install the software. The CD-ROM contains the full download
version, and can install all available guides on your desktop
computer.
FULL DOWNLOAD
Download the application and all of the guides from the
ZAGAT TO GO download Web site. Use this option if you
have a fast Internet connection and you want to have all
guides available on your desktop computer.
CUSTOM DOWNLOAD
Download the application and selected guides from the
ZAGAT TO GO download Web site. Use this option if you
have a slow Internet connection or if you only want to have
specific guides available on your desktop computer.
CD-ROM Installation Instructions
1. Insert the ZAGAT TO GO CD-ROM in your desktop
computer’s CD-ROM drive. The installer launches
automatically.
2. Select the ZAGAT TO GO for Palm OS installer.
3. On the Welcome screen, click Next.
4. Read and accept the license agreement by clicking Yes.
5. Review the minimum requirements and click Next.
6. Select the Palm Desktop User who will install the
application and click Next.
7. The application installs automatically. Select the guides
you want to install and click Next.
8. Click Next to begin the installation.
9. When the installation is complete, click Finish.
10. Perform a HotSync operation to install the application
and guides on your Palm OS handheld.

Full/Custom Download and
Installation Instructions
Follow the instructions below for a Full or Custom
Download. Make sure that your handheld is set up
so that you can perform a HotSync operation.
1. On your desktop computer, go to
www.zagat.com/ztg
2. Click ZAGAT TO GO for Palm OS.
3. Click one of the following:
• Purchase Digital Download (to purchase a
one-year subscription)
• Download Free Trial (to download a 14-day
free trial version – you must enter your name
and e-mail address and click Submit if you
select this option)
4. Click Download Full Install or Download
Custom Install. Make sure that you have enough
space allotted for the download method you
select.
5. Click Save on the File Download screen.
6. Select a folder and click Save to save the installer
Zagat To Go for Palm OS (Full).exe or Zagat To
Go for Palm OS (Custom).exe to your desktop
computer, depending on the download method
you require.
Note: Follow the instructions for either a full or
custom installation.
FULL INSTALLATION
1. After the download is complete, double-click the
ZAGAT TO GO (Full) desktop icon (if that is the
folder in which you placed the application).
2. On the Welcome screen, click Next.
3. Read and accept the license agreement by
clicking Yes.
4. Review the minimum requirements and click Next.
5. Select the Palm Desktop User who will install the
application and click Next.
6. Review the components available for you to install
on your Palm OS handheld. The application
installs automatically. Select the guides you want
to install and click Ne xt.

7. Click Next to begin the installation.
8. When the installation is complete, click Finish.
9. Perform a HotSync operation to install the
application and guides on your Palm OS
handheld.
CUSTOM INSTALLATION
1. On the same Web page, choose which guide
you want to install by clicking the guide name.
2. Click Save on the File Download screen, select
a location, and click Save again to save the
guide installer, Zagat <City Name> <Guide
Type> (Palm).exe, to your desktop computer.
3. Click Close when the download is complete.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 for each guide you want to
download.
5. After the downloads are complete, click the
ZAGAT TO GO (Custom) desktop icon (if that is
the folder in which you placed the application).
6. On the Welcome screen, click Next.
7. Read and accept the license agreement by
clicking Yes.
8. Review the minimum requirements and click
Next.
9. Select the Palm Desktop User who will install
the application and click Next.
10. Click Next to begin the installation.
11. When the installation is complete, click Finish.
12. Click the ZAGAT <City Name> <Guide Type>
desktop icon for the city you wish to download (if
that is the folder in which you placed the
application).
13. Select the Palm Desktop User who will install
the guide and click OK.
14. Repeat steps 12 and 13 for each guide you wish
to install on the device.
15. When you are finished installing the application
and all the guides on the desktop computer,
perform a HotSync operation to install the
application and guides on your Palm OS
handheld device.
Completing Your Purchase
To complete your ZAGAT TO GO subscription purchase,
follow the steps below after installing the application and
guides on your Palm OS handheld.
Note: You do not need to purchase the product to use
the demo (14-day trial) version of the application.
1. Go to the ZAGAT TO GO download Web site at
www.zagat.com/ztg.
2. Click Subscribe for Palm OS version or Register
Palm OS version.
3. Enter the Personal Information requested, including
your user ID.
Note: Access your User ID by running ZAGAT TO GO
on your Palm OS handheld, tapping the Zagat
title, tapping Options, then Subscription.
User ID
4. Click Continue at the bottom of the Personal
Information screen on your computer.
5. Complete the Payment Method form by entering your
Promotion Code or credit card information. If you
installed from a CD-ROM, your Promotion Code is
printed on the sticker inside the CD-ROM packaging.
6. Click Continue.
7. Click Submit.
After you submit the information, your Activation Code will
be e-mailed to you at the address entered on the Personal
Information Page. Enter it in the Activation Code field on
the ZAGAT TO GO Subscription screen on the Palm OS
handheld.

Launching ZAGAT TO GO
Now that you have installed the application, you are
ready to view establishment information.
To run the application, tap the ZAGAT TO GO icon
on the Palm OS handheld’s Home screen. The ZAGAT
TO GO Home screen appears, unless one of the
following apply:
• If you are using a free trial version, or if you are in
the last month of a year-long subscription, you will
see a screen displaying a reminder of the
installation’s expiration date.
• If you are launching ZAGAT TO GO for the first time,
and have multiple guides installed, you must select a
guide.
Home Screen
The Home screen displays a list of all establishments in a
given guide.
MENUS AND DROP-DOWN LISTS
ZAGAT APPLICATION MENU
Tap the Zagat title in the upper left corner of the
Home screen to view these menus:
OPTIONS
Guides: View a list of currently installed guides.
To remove a guide, select the guide and tap
Remove.
Subscription: Find out when your subscription
will expire and how to renew your subscription.
Beam: Beam information to another device by
tapping Beam and pointing the Palm OS
handheld in the direction of the receiving
handheld computer.
HELP
View the main Help screen that displays content
information for all help topics.
GUIDES DROP-DOWN LIST
Tap the Guides (city name) drop-down list to select
a different guide (only installed city guides are
displayed).
Browsing for an Establishment
You can use the View drop-down list to browse a specific
list of establishments by category, including:
• List that you create (My Favorites)
• Indexes (Most Popular, Top by Cuisine/Category, Top
by Special Feature/Appeal, View by
Cuisine/Category, View by Neighborhood, View by
Feature)
Tap the View drop-down list in the upper left corner of the
screen. Several lists appear. Tap your selection. If you
select View All, My Favorites, or Most Popular, ZAGAT
TO GO displays a list of establishments immediately.

Note: On the ZAGAT TO GO Home screen, you can
re-sort the information displayed on the screen
by tapping the corresponding column heading.
Note: From the Guides drop-down list, select the
<city name> to view the restaurant guide;
select the <city name nightlife> to view the
nightlife guide for that city.
VIEW DROP-DOWN LIST
Browse lists and indexes. See Browsing for an
Establishment for more information.

ZAGAT TO GO screens may display one or more of the
icons shown below.

If you choose any of the other lists, you must choose a
subcategory before you can view a list of establishments.
For example, if you select Top by Cuisine in the View
drop-down list, ZAGAT TO GO displays a list of cuisine
types. Tap the cuisine type that you want and the screen
displays the establishments that offer that cuisine.

Searching for an
Establishment
ZAGAT TO GO provides two ways to search for
an establishment.
LOOKUP
To search for an establishment in the list that is
currently displayed:
1. On the Home screen, tap the Lookup field.
2. Enter the first few letters (or entire name) of
the establishment.
ZAGAT TO GO highlights the first matching entry.
If an exact match cannot be found, the closest
match is found. Tap an establishment name to
view its Details screen.
ADVANCED SEARCH
An advanced search allows you to narrow the
search results by specifying search parameters.
Follow the instructions below.
1. On the Home screen, tap Advanced search.
• Specify certain Cuisines/Categories,
Neighborhoods, or Features by tapping the
corresponding All link and selecting from the list
provided.
3. Tap Search.
Note: Establishments matching your search criteria
will be returned. If the list is blank, return to the
Advanced Search screen and alter your
criteria.
Viewing Establishment Details
and Review
Tap the name of an establishment on the Home screen
to view details and read a review about that
establishment.
DETAILS SCREEN
REVIEW SCREEN
The Review screen shows you the review with surveyors’
comments in quotes. Use the scroll bar at the right side of
the screen to move through the details.
CREATIN G A MY FAVORITES LIST
1. To add an establishment to your favorites, tap the my
favorites box at the bottom of the Details screen. A
checkmark appears in the box.
2. Add as many establishments as you like.
3. To view the list of your favorites, select the My
Favorites index from the View drop-down list (on the
Home screen). Your personal list of favorite
establishments for that guide appears.
Note: Tap the checked my favorites box to remove that
establishment from your favorites.
2. Select one or more search parameters as
described below.
• Enter the entire name or the first few
letters of the establishment in the Name
begins field. Enter all or part of the
establishment name in the Name
contains field.
• Choose minimum ratings for
Food/Appeal, Decor, and/or Service.
Choose a maximum Cost.
The Details screen provides the phone number, location,
and overview of the cuisine/category, neighborhood, and
features of the establishment you selected. Icons (if
available) at the bottom of the screen provide additional
details. Use the scroll bar at the right side of the screen
to move through the details.
Note: If an establishment has multiple locations, the
Details tab will have a Multiple Locations link.
Tap the link to find a particular location.
ADDING AN APPOINTMENT TO YOUR CALENDAR
1. Tap add to calendar at the bottom of the Details
screen.
2. Enter the appointment information (date, time, number
of people, and notes) and tap Save.
3. Edit any saved appointments directly in your Palm
Date Book.
Note: On a Handspring™ Treo™ or a Kyocera®
Smartphone with phone functionality, tap the
phone number to call the establishment directly
from this interface.

Managing Your Account
UPDATES
Updated guides are released from time to time. To verify that you have the most
current guide(s) on your Palm OS handheld, follow the steps below.
1. On the Home screen, tap the Zagat title, then tap Guides on the Options menu.
Select a guide to display its timestamp.
2. On your desktop computer, go to the ZAGAT TO GO download Web site
(www.zagat.com/ztg
3. Select ZAGAT TO GO for Palm OS.
4. Review the list of guides on the Download Updated Guides page.
5. Compare the timestamps for each guide. If any of the guides on your Palm OS
handheld are older than those on the site, download and install the new guide
from the ZAGAT TO GO download Web site. Updates less than two months old
are marked New on the Web site.
Note: To avoid losing your favorites, do not delete the current guide before
installing the updated guide.
SUBSCRIPTION PURCHASE AND RENEWAL
Use the Subscription screen to purchase or renew your ZAGAT TO GO subscription.
Start the subscription activation/renewal process:
1. If you have a 14-day trial version of the software, tap Subscribe Now on the
Welcome screen.
2. To renew a subscription, tap the Zagat title on the Home screen, then tap
Subscription on the Options menu.
3. On your desktop computer, go to the ZAGAT TO GO download Web site
(www.zagat.com/ztg
4. Select ZAGAT TO GO for Palm OS.
5. Follow the steps under Purchase Digital Download to acquire an Activation
Code for your new subscription.
6. On the Subscription screen, enter the new Activation Code and tap Subscribe.

Uninstalling ZAGAT TO GO
Follow these steps to uninstall ZAGAT TO GO:
1. On the Palm OS handheld, tap the main Home button (not the ZAGAT TO GO
Home icon).
2. Tap the App menu and tap Delete.
3. Select ZAGAT TO GO and tap Delete.
