Creating a custom profile is a one-time setup required for most instruments
that will be used with the CloseUp® System. It takes 15-30 minutes and
requires a laptop or desktop computer. You will not need a computer to
use the CloseUp® System once you’ve finished profiling your instrument.
Download the Profiling Software by going to: yourheaven.net/closeup-downloads/
To create a custom profile, you’ll record a 30 second s egment of your chosen piece or song (inst rumen-
tal only, don’t add vocals) twice — once with the mic outside the in strument and once with the mic
attached inside t he instrument. Based on ove r a decade of acoustic research, our p roprietary EzQ ®

algorithms will use thes e recordings to create a custom profile that is specif ic to your instrument, giving
you the best pos sible sound. You can transfer this profile to th e CloseUp® System’s memory, and also
save it to your computer for future us e.
You can store up to 4 custom profiles on t he CloseUp® System. Universal prof iles for violin, viola, and
cello are pre-installe d on every CloseUp® System, h owever custom profiles are highly recomme nded for
best results . Note: there are no pre-installed guitar profiles. You will need to create a custom profile for your
guitar for use with your CloseUp ® System.
YOU WILL NEED:
Your ins trument
T he CloseUp® System
A s ong you can play well
A quie t space to record in
for about 30 minutes
An inter net connection (to
download the profiling so ware)
A co mputer with Windows 7
or newer, or Mac OS X 10.7 or newer
1
Go to yourheaven.net/closeup-downloa ds/ to download the soware.
2
Install the so ware on your computer and connect the Clos eUp® System to your computer with
the USB cable.
3
When you run the sof tware, it will walk you step-by- step through the process of profiling your
instrument .
4
Once you have created and tran sferred your custom profile to the Close Up® System, you will be
ready to play and record on st age or in any environment.
CUSTOM EQ
When you have finished the a utomated portion of creating the custo m profile for your instrument, you
have the option to customize the ton e of your instrument further. On the R EVIEW screen, choose either
BASIC or ADVANCED under “USE CUSTOM EQ”. The CUS TOM EQ feature allows you to adjust the tone
quality of your instr ument in two ways:
1
Basic CUSTOM EQ emulates the EQ controls found on amps or basic EQ pedals , allowing you to
increase or decrease t he Low (Bass), Middle and High (Treble) frequencies of or your instrument ’s

at the beginning of profiling.
2
ADVANCE D CUSTOM EQ is similar to an EQ plugin you’d find in a professional digital audio wor k-
station. It oers 7 p arametric filters of various t ypes to precisely shape your so und.
As you adjust your CUS TOM EQ, you can hear the changes in t he playback of your recording at right as it
loops. You have the option of reco rding a new audio loop if you want to try out your profile an d CUSTOM
EQ on other musical material.
Tip: when switching between NONE, BASIC and A DVANCED CUSTOM EQ types, your settings in each will
be preserved for future editing , even if you save a profile to your computer and reload it later.
If you open an exist ing profile (.ezq) file from your computer, you can add or edit the CUS TOM EQ before
transferring it to yo ur CloseUp® System using the EDIT button t hat appears once you open the profile.
In this case you will not have a recor ding available to listen to your changes on, but you can choose to
load an “inside” recording you save d during a previous profiling session (for insta nce, the one you saved
when you made the profile yo u’re editing ), or record a new one.
When you’re done making changes, simply click NE XT or BACK and you’ll be ready to transfe r the profile,
with newly updated CUS TOM EQ, to your CloseUp® System.

INSTALLING THE GUITAR MICROPHONE
1
Insert the MICRO PHONE CLIP into your guitar’s sound
hole by sliding the clip sideways , underneath the strings.
If the neck of the guit ar is at 12 o’clock, the microphone
should point to 4 o’clock.
2
Once the MICROPHONE CLIP is in the corre ct position,
twist the clip so t hat it slides inside the sound hole, mic
end first, and pr ess it into position so that both ends of
the clip are touching the edges of t he soundhole.

4
Slide the rubber loop an d white clip attachment up the
microphone cable towards your v iolin’s tailgut.
5
Untwist (open) the white clip. Thread t he rubber loop
beneath (then up and around,) o ne of the tailgut posts. (If
the rubber loop doe sn’t fit beneath the tailgut, it can b e
threaded under the po rtion of the tailgut that bends ove r
the top edge of the violin.)
6
Pull the white clip through the rubb er loop so that the
rubber loop is now wr apped around the post of the tail-
gut. Twist the white clip (closed) to lock in th e rubber loop.
7
Place the square of violin foam under neath the chin rest
to keep the microphone wire f rom rattling (optional.)
You have now successfully at tached the microphone. As long
as the rubber loop is pr operly attached, you sho uld be able to
tug on the microphone wire, wit hout moving the microphone in
your violin’s F-hole.

3
Place your fingers inside of the s ound hole and spread
each end of the clip apar t until it fits tightly against the
edges of your guitar ’s sound hole. This pressure does not
need to be ext reme, just enough to keep the clip in place.
SLIDING ON THE SOUND HOLE COVER
4
Once the MICROPHONE CLIP is in place, slide the S OUND
HOLE COVER on, fe lt side down, underneath the string s.
Note: The SOUND HOLE COVER has three notches and a
flat or rounded edge, depending on the t ype of guitar you
selected at purchase. This edge should line up with the
bottom edge of the fretboard and cover all or almost all
of the sound hole. If your hole cover does not fit, contact
support@yourheaven.net.
5
There are two notche s at the bottom of the SOUND HOLE
COVER. The smaller notch is fo r the wire to come out. The
larger notch slides under the clip’s top bar and goe s to
the very end of t he bar. The other end of the guitar clip
fits into the other notch in t he cover.
MAKING SURE EVERYTHING IS IN POSIT ION
Double check that the MICR OPHONE CLIP is on tight, that the foam end of the clip is facing at 4 o’clock,
and that the SOUND HOLE COVER is ins talled felt-side-down, flat-e dge against the guitar neck, fir mly
seated underneath th e MICROPHONE CLIP.

connecting to live sound equipment
Once you have installed th e CLOSEUP® MICROPHONE on your instrument and connecte d it to the
CLOSEUP® PROCESSOR, the Clos eUp® System can connect to profes sional audio equipment via a ¼"
cable or an XLR cable (connector cables not included.) A ¼" to XLR adaptor cable is includ ed with the
CloseUp® System if nee ded.
The CloseUp® System out puts a balanced, line level signal for use with
professional audio equipme nt. This means you can connect it direc tly
to a mixer or audio interfa ce (via the line input or mic input with pad,)
eliminating the need for a DI Box .
We recommend using a balanced ste reo ¼" cable or XLR (mic) cable to
go into a stage snake or directly to a mi xer, amp, or powered speaker.

Note: There are a few situations wher e we would recommend using a mono cable instead. We do n ot
recommend connec ting the CloseUp® System to a Guita r or Bass amp. See OUTPUT section, p. 2 8,
for more information.
SETTING THE CORRECT VOLUME
While running a sound check , we recommend setting the INPUT GA IN to a level where the yellow LED
lights up while you play your instr ument, but the red LED never does .
If the red LED is lighting up, it means you are ove rloading the signal, which may result in distort ion. If this
is experience d, turn it down.
CORRECT on Lights up when audio signal is pre sent
INCORRECT both on Signal overload — turn down the GAIN knob
ADJUSTING TONE & DEALING WITH FEEDBACK
The TONE knob ca n be used to alter the tone of your instrument (eg , if the speaker sounds tinny). This
is its main use. Turning the TONE knob tow ard “High” can also help control the low-frequ ency feedback
created by some sound s ystems. Turning this knob toward “Low” can help with t he high-frequency
feedback found in some sit uations.
FINAL ADJUSTMENTS
Once you have set the TON E and INPUT GAIN
you can work with the S ound Engineer at the
venue to make any adjustment s they would
need to make with their own e quipment.
Because our sy stem provides accurate sound
without the problems u sually experienced on
a live sound stage with re gular microphones or
pickups, the enginee r should not make the kinds
of corrections t ypically used for that equipment .
This will make the CloseUp System s ound worse.
The engineer should st art by only making chang-
es based on the roo m and speakers.

The CloseUp® System works the same way for recording as it does on
stage, with these additions:
PLUGGING THE CLOSEUP® SYSTEM INTO YOUR COMPUTER
The CloseUp® System ca n act as a class-compliant plug-n- play USB audio interface. This means you can
plug it directly to your computer v ia the USB cable , with no other cable neede d. The CloseUp® System
interacts direc tly with standard audio so ware (editors and DAWs.)
If you choose to record this way over backing tracks, please se e USB MONITOR MODE on page 22
PLUGGING THE CLOSEUP® SYSTEM INTO AN AUDIO INTERFACE
You can also connect th e CloseUp® System to a standard audio interf ace via the ¼" analog output jack.
If the audio interface i s a good one, this will sound nearly identical to wh en the CloseUp® System is
plugged directl y into the computer (via the USB cable). If you choose to connect this way, remember to set
the interface so that you can monitor yourself without latency.
SOUND ISOLATION
An advantage to using the Clos eUp® System while recording is that you don’t have to worr y about sound
isolation (optimizing the acoust ics of the room you’re recording in or dealing with most out side noises
such as cars driving b y.)
RECORDING
Recording with the closeup® sys tem
21
USB MONITOR MODE
This feature allows you to balance the soun d of your instrument with USB audio playback from t he
computer in the CloseUp® Sys tem’s analog output while using the zero-latency monitor ing the CloseUp®
System provides. (See page 36 for more.)
STEREO (HEADPHONE) OUTPUT MODE
In this mode, the output c hanges to an unbalanced, stereo signal. This allows you to plug hea dphones
into the Output jack to listen to your ins trument, and to hear audio playing back from your co mputer in
stereo. (See page 36 for more .)
USING MULTIPLE USB AUDIO INTERFACES
Professional audio so ware oen allows for the
use of more than one audio inter face at a time.
Specifically, one inter face can be the input, while
another act s as the output. If your sow are has
this capability, you can us e the CloseUp® System
with other equipment you may ow n.
You can record using the CloseUp® Sys tem’s
USB digital audio interface w hile using a larger
interface’s more fle xible options for listening
and monitoring. However, if you do cho ose to
do this you will need to set up yo ur own system
to monitor any mix of your recorded t racks with
the live audio from the Close Up® System. In
this situation, many users w ho already own a
larger audio interface simpl y record the analog
line output of the CloseUp® Sy stem. Advanced
users may also combine t he interfaces using
aggregate audio inter face features of their OS
or other audio drivers .

INPUT GAIN
The INPUT GAIN knob cont rols the volume of
the signal from the mic as it enter s the CloseUp®
System. (also known as input g ain.) If the red LED
lights up while playing, the IN PUT GAIN is too high
(the audio signal is overloading and may ca use
disto rtion). T he INPUT GAIN knob should be se t
so that, while playing, th e yellow LED lights up
most of the time and the r ed LED never lights up.
CORRECT on
INCORRECT both on
For the best sound quality, set the INPUT GA IN as
described, and then change the volume up or down
on the mixer or amplifier.
TONE
The TONE knob change s the bass-treble balance of your instrument . Unless you need to use it, leave this knob in the clear zone ar ound the
UNITY position (the “no ee ct” zone). This means
that the custom profile you’ve create d for your instrument is unadul terated.
We recommend adjusting th e TONE knob if you
need to compensate for li ve sound (amplifica-
tion) systems with too m uch or too little bass
(which can cause feedba ck, muled sound or
tinny sound).
Turning the TONE knob toward “High” can help
control the low-fre quency feedback created by
some sound sys tems. Turning this knob toward
“Low” can help with the h igh frequency feedback
found in some situations.
MIC INPUT
The CloseUp® System MIC INPU T (DIN connector)
accepts CloseUp® Sys tem Microphones.
This MIC INPUT does not accept s tandard
microphones and doe s not work with other
mics or MIDI cables .
Important: Check to see t hat the CloseUp®
System is o or muted before p lugging the
microphone in.
SEQ00 6 models need to be muted or turn ed o
before plugging in a microphon e. Starting with
model SEQ007, the CloseUp® Sys tem automatical-
ly mutes itself if th ere is no microphone present,
and will automatically un-mute it self about a
second aer a mic is plugge d in.
As with any audio device, p lugging a microphone
in while the CloseUp® System is o n, unmuted and
connected to a speaker o r headphones can cause
a loud pop that can damage the oth er equipment.
If you hear so noise instead o f your instrument,
or a popping sound when th e INPUT GAIN knob is
adjusted, mute and unmute t he CloseUp® System.
Alternatively, turn it o and the n on again.

MUTE PEDAL
The MUTE PEDAL is convenient for muting an
instrument on st age. Both the MUTE PEDAL and
the MUTE SWITCH can mute the output , but the
MUTE SWITCH is the master. When the MUTE
SWITCH is on , the MUTE PEDAL has no eect. Th e
red LED will pulse slowly any time t he CloseUp®
System is muted.
OUTPUT
The OUTPUT jack (stereo TRS) accepts m ost ¼" ca-
bles. We recommend using a s tereo ¼" cable most
of the time (see recomme ndations below.) The
OUTPUT jack outputs a mono, balance d, line-level
signal. This output can be p lugged directly into any
powered speaker, amp, mixer or audio inter face.
This output does not ne ed a DI box (direct box,)
however you can use one w ithout issues.
We recommend using a s tereo ¼" cable (also
known as a balanced cable, w ith two stripes on
the plug,) if connec ting to equipment that has a
balanced input (becaus e it will give you standard
noise rejection and gain advantage s of balanced
audio.) Most balanced inputs w ill be labeled as
being balanced .
If the audio input is not labeled, mo st professional
recording equipment uses a balan ced line input,
while most guitar equipme nt does not. However,
we always recommend look ing online or at the
product manual for that equipm ent just to be sure.
We recommend using a m ono ¼" cable (guitar
cable with one str ipe on the plug,) if connecting
directly to an amp that doe s not have a balanced
input. For example, mos t guitar/bass amplifiers
do not have a balanced input.
The Output signal is mono and b alanced by de-
fault, however it can b e temporarily set to stereo,
unbalanced using the Monitor but ton. (See the
“Monitor Button” section on p. 36.)
We recommend agains t using an electric
guitar amp: Though the Clo seUp® System works
with electri c guitar amps, we do not recommend
them as they color the s ound and make the
instrument so und “not quite right.”
Ideally any amp that you can clearly an d enjoyably
play your favorite albums throug h without need-
ing to adjust any tone controls will be acce ptable.
For a portable s ystem, a powered PA speaker
or keyboard amp work well. A mps marketed for
use with acoustic ins truments or voice are
usually acceptable.
USB CONNECTOR
The MICRO-USB CONNECTOR allows th e
CloseUp® System to be pow ered from most stan-
dard USB ports , USB wall chargers, and cell phone

DUAL INSTRUMENT ADAPTER CABLE. The only other way to acce ss a profile set to 2 – SECONDARY is to

DUAL GAIN MODE
DUAL GAIN MODE is only for us e with DUAL INSTRUMENT MODE. Turning it on changes th e TONE knob
into an INPUT GAIN knob for th e second instrument in DUAL INSTRUMENT MODE. If there is only one
instrument plugge d into the CloseUp® System, it temporaril y makes the TONE knob useless .
Instrument s in DUAL INSTRUMENT MODE use the same GA IN and TONE controls. If the two in stru-
ments being used in DUAL INSTRUMENT MODE nee d dierent GAIN settings, you can put t he CloseUp®
System in DUAL GAIN MODE . This will temporarily turn the TONE k nob into a GAIN knob for the second
(2 – SECONDARY,) instrument .
When in DUAL GAIN MODE, t he TONE Control is not available for either ins trument, and will reset to its
default value (UNITY ). If you need to adjust tone, it will have to be done else where. The Low Frequency
EQ control on many mixers is similar to this.

FAQS
How long would the 9V battery last for?
7 hours.
For the custom profile, I have just started playing my instrument and can’t yet play a 30-second song. Can I still buy CloseUp® System?
You will need to play for 30 seconds onl y when
creating a custom profile for GUITAR. If not ready
yet, you can ask a fr iend or teacher to help you
create the custom profile. You only have to do it
once and takes just 15 mins .
However, our pre-insta lled universal profiles for
VIOLIN, VIOLA, and C ELLO are supremely accu-
rate and will provide an excellent s ound for your
instrument eliminating the n eed to play a specific
song twice.
I want more volume but as I turn it up, the red LED lights up. What do I do?
The best solution i s for you to turn the knob down
on CloseUp® System to have the y ellow LED light
up. And then to turn up the volume f rom your PA/
speaker/amplifier.
How important is creating a custom profile f or my instrument?
The custom profile is at the hear t of the CloseUp®
System. While we can provid e a decent sounding
“Universal” profile for s ome instruments, the
process of measuring an d calibrating to your
instrument is like the diere nce between a friend
recording your violin with their ine xpensive home
microphone or iPhone, and an e xperienced
engineer at a high end stu dio recording your
VIOLIN aer spending ½ hour or s o on careful
listening and placement. Bu t with the CloseUp®
System, you only have to make the prof ile once,
and then you get the be st sound instantly, any-
where. (Universal prof iles do not exist for some
instrument s.)
