SECTION1: IMPORTANTSAFEOPERATIONPRACTICES
This symbol points out important safety instructions which, if not followed, could endanger the personal safety and/or property of yourself and others. Read and follow all instructions in this manual before attempting to operate your lawn mower. Failure to comply with these instructions may result in personal injury. When you see this symbol, heed its warning.
WARNING: The Engine Exhaust from this product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.
DANGER: Your lawn mower was built to be operated according to the rules for safe operation inthis manual. As with any type of power equipment, carelessness or error on the part of the operator can result in serious injury. This lawn mower is capable of amputating hands and feet and throwing objects. Failure to observe the following safety instructions could result in serious injury or death.
GENERALOPERATION
Read this operator's manual carefully in its entirety before attempting to assemble this machine. Read,
understand, and follow all instructions on the machine and in the manual(s) before operation. Be
completely familiar with the controls and the proper
use of this machine before operating it. Keep this manual in a safe place for future and regular o
reference and for ordering replacement parts.
Your rotary mower is a precision piece of power equipment, not a plaything. Therefore, exercise o
extreme caution at all times. Your unit has been designed to perform one job: to mow grass. Do not
use it for any other purpose. Never allow children under 14 years old to operate o
a power mower. Children 14 years old and over should only operate mower under close parental
supervision. Only responsible individuals who are familiar with these rules of safe operation should be
allowed to use your mower.
Keep the area of operation clear of all persons, particularly small children and pets. Stop engine
when they are in the vicinity of your mower to help
prevent blade contact or thrown object injury.
Although the area of operation should be completely cleared of foreign objects, an object may o
have been overlooked and could be accidentally
thrown by the mower in any direction and cause o serious personal injury to the operator or any others
allowed in the area. o Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and close-
fitting slacks and shirts. Shirts and pants that cover the arms and legs and steel-toed shoes are
recommended. Do not wear loose fitting clothes or
jewelry. They can be caught in moving parts. Never operate a unit in bare feet, sandals, slippery or light
weight (e.g. canvas) shoes, o Always wear safety glasses or safety goggles
during operation or while performing an adjustment or repair, to protect eyes from foreign objects that
may be thrown from the machine in any direction.
Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used. Remove all stones, sticks, wire, bones,
toys and other foreign objects which could be
picked up and thrown by the mower in any direction and cause serious personal injury to the operator or any others allowed in the area. Plan your mowing
pattern to avoid discharge of material toward roads, sidewalks, bystanders and the like. To help avoid a
thrown objects injury, keep children, bystanders and helpers at least 75 feet from the mower while it
is in operation. Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating
parts. Keep clear of discharge opening at all times as the rotating blade can cause injury.
Many injuries occur as a result of the mower being pulled over the foot during a fall. Do not hang on to
the mower if you are falling; release the handle immediately.
Never pull the mower toward you while you are walking. Ifyou must back the mower away from a
wall or obstruction first look down and behind, and then follow these steps:
a. Step back from the mower to fully extend your
arms.
b. Be sure you are well balanced with sure
footing.
c. Pull the mower back slowly, no more than half
way toward you.
d. Repeat these steps as needed.
Do not operate the mower while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Do not engage the self-propelled mechanism on units so equipped while starting engine.
The blade control handle is a safety device. Never attempt to bypass its operation. Doing so makes the
safety device inoperative and may result in personal injury through contact with the rotating blade. The
blade control handle must operate easily in both directions and automatically return to the
disengaged position when released. Never operate the mower in wet grass. Always be
sure of your footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. Keep a firm hold on the
handle and walk, never run. Ifyou feel you are losing your footing, RELEASE THE BLADE
CONTROL HANDLE IMMEDIATELY and the blade will stop rotating within three seconds.

SlopeOperation
For your safety, use the slope gauge included as part of this manual to measure slopes before
operating this unit on a sloped or hilly area. If the slope is greater than 15 degrees as shown on the
slope gauge, do not operate this unit on that area or serious injury could result.
Do:
Mow across the face of slopes; never up and down. Exercise extreme caution when changing direction
on slopes. Watch for holes, ruts, hidden objects, or bumps. Tall
grass can hide obstacles. Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can
cause serious personal injury. If you feel you are
losing your balance release the blade control handle immediately and the blade will stop in less
than 3 seconds.
DoNOT:
Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches or
embankments. The operator could lose footing or
balance.
Do not mow slopes greater than 15 degrees as
shown on the slope gauge.
Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced footing could
cause slipping.
Children
Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the presence of children. Children are often
attracted to the mower and the mowing activity.
Never assume that children will remain where you last saw them.
Keep children out of the mowing area and under the watchful care of a responsible adult other than the
operator. Be alert and turn mower off if a child enters the
area. Before and while moving backwards, look behind
and down for small children or other objects. Never allow children under age 14 to operate the
mower. Children 14 years of age and above should read and understand the operation instructions and
safety rules in this manual. Use extreme care when approaching blind corners, shrubs, trees, or other objects that may obscure
your vision of a child or hazard.
Service
Use extreme care in handling gasoline and other fuels. They are extremely flammable and the vapors
are explosive. Use only an approved gasoline container. Never remove gas cap or add fuel while the engine
is running. Allow engine to cool at least two minutes before refueling.
Replace gasoline cap securely and wipe off any spilled gasoline before starting the engine as it may
cause a fire or explosion. Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and other
sources of ignition. Never refuel machine indoors because flammable
vapors will accumulate in the area. Never store the machine or fuel container inside
where there is an open flame or spark such as a gas water heater, space heater, or furnace.
Never run an engine inside a closed area. To reduce fire hazard, keep mower free of grass,
leaves, or other debris build-up. Clean up oil or fuel spillage. Allow mower to cool at least 5 minutes
before storing. Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, make
certain the blade and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire, and keep
the wire away from the spark plug to prevent accidental starting.
Check the blade and engine mounting bolts at frequent intervals for proper tightness. Also, visually
inspect blade for damage (e.g., bent, cracked or worn). Replace with blade which meets original
equipment specifications listed in this manual. Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight to be sure the
equipment is in safe working condition. Never tamper with safety devices. Check their
proper operation regularly. After striking a foreign object, stop the engine,
remove the wire from the spark plug, and thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage.
Repair the damage before starting and operating the mower.

Both the mulching baffle and the mulching plug are used only for mulching purposes. Instead of collecting the grass clippings in a grass catcher, some mower models have the option of recirculating the clippings back to the lawn. This is called mulching.
safety device. Never attempt to bypass its operations.
ThrottleControl
Your unit is equipped with one of three throttle controls described below. Follow instructions which pertain to your unit.
1. The throttle control is located on the left side of the upper handle. It is used to regulate the engine
speed.
2. The throttle control is located on the engine. It is used to regulate the engine speed.
3. Your engine is equipped with a constant speed throttle, which is set at full throttle for best
performance.
WARNING: The throttle control cannot be
used to stop the engine. If the throttle control is located on the engine, do not adjust itwith the engine running.
CuttingHeightAdjustmentLever
This lever, located at each wheel, lets you adjust
cutting height of the grass. Remember to put all four
levers at the same height to avoid uneven cut.
SECTION5: OPERATINGYOURLAWNMOWER

from the chute area on cutting deck. The blade will be rotating whenever the engine
is running.
GasandOilFill-Up
Service the engine with gasoline and oil as instructed in the separate engine manual packed with your mower. Follow instructions carefully.
WARNING: Never fill fuel tank indoors,
with engine running or until the engine
has been allowed to cool for at least two minutes after running.
BeforeStarting
Attach spark plug wire to spark plug. If unit is equipped with a rubber boot over the spark plug wire, ensure that the metal cap on the end of the spark plug wire (inside the rubber boot) is fastened securely over the metal tip on the spark plug.
ToStartEngineandEngageBlade
Move throttle control lever (if equipped) to the fast (rabbit) position.
Ifengine is equipped with a primer, prime engine as instructed in the separate engine manual packed
with your unit.
Standing behind the unit, depress the blade control handle and hold it against the upper handle.
Grasp starter handle and pull rope out slowly until
engine reaches start of compression cycle (rope will pull slightly harder at this point). Let the rope
rewind slowly.
Pull rope with a rapid, continuous, full arm stroke. Keep a firm grip on starter handle. Return it slowly
to the rope guide.
NOTE: If any problems are encountered, refer to the
Trouble Shooting Guide.
ToStopEngineandBlade

cutting. Lawn should be cut in the fall as long as
there is growth.
WARNING: If you strike a foreign object,
stop the engine. Remove wire from spark plug, thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage, and repair the damage before restarting and operating the
mower. Extensive vibration of the mower
during operation is an indication of damage. The unit should be promptly
inspected and repaired.
UsingtheMulcher
For effective mulching, do not cut wet grass because it tends to stick to the underside of the
deck, preventing proper mulching of grass clippings. New or thick grass may require a
narrower cut. The ground speed should be adjusted to the condition of the lawn. If mowing has been delayed and the grass has been allowed to grow in excess of 4", mulching is not
recommended. Mow using the grass bag (if so equipped) to reduce the grass height to 3-1/4"
maximum before mulching.
SECTION6: MAKINGADJUSTMENTS
adjustment to lawn mower without first WARNING: Do not at any time make any stopping engine and disconnecting spark
plug wire.
CuttingHeight
An adjusting plate and thumb lever at each wheel position provides cutting height adjustment. Each adjusting plate has nine height positions. Height of cut will be changed when the thumb lever is moved from
one hole to another.
Simply depress the lever towards wheel and move wheel and lever assembly to desired position. All wheels must be placed in the same relative position. See Figure 14.

Before reassembling the blade and the blade adapter to the unit, lubricate the engine crankshaft and the inner surface of the blade adapter with light oil (or engine oil). Also lubricate the bolt holes, bolts
and inner surface of the nuts.
Install the blade adapter on the crankshaft with the "star" away from the engine. Refer to Figure 18. Place the blade with the side marked bottom (or with part number) facing away from the adapter.
Align the blade bell support over the blade with the
tabs in the holes of the blade and insert the hex
bolt. Tighten the hex bolt to the torque listed in the "Blade Mounting Torque" section below.

Center Bolt: 450 in. Ibs. min., 600 in. Ibs. max. IMPORTANT:Toensure safe operation, all nuts and
bolts must be checked periodically for correct tightness.
The deck may be cleaned by tilting the mower and scraping clean with a suitable tool (make certain the spark plug wire is disconnected).
Engine
Refer to the separate engine manual.
ReplacingRearFlap
To remove rear flap, cut off the flat end of the wire
rod which secures itto the deck. See Figure 20.
Attach the new flap and new rod to deck, bending the ends of the new rod over to secure to deck.

DeckCare
NOTE: We do not recommend the use of pressure
washers or garden hose to clean your unit. These may cause damage to electric components spindles, pulleys, bearings or the engine. The use of water will shorten life of the mower and reduce its serviceability.
The underside of the mower deck should be cleaned after each use to prevent a buildup of
grass clippings, leaves, dirt or other matter. If this debris is allowed to accumulate, it will invite rust and corrosion, and may cause an uneven discharge of grass clippings at the next cutting.
SECTION8: OFF-SEASONSTORAGE
The following steps should be taken to prepare lawn mower for storage.
Clean and lubricate mower thoroughly as described
in the lubrication instructions.
Refer to engine manual for correct engine storage
instructions.
Coat mower's cutting blade with chassis grease to
prevent rusting.

Store mower in a dry, clean area. Do not store next to corrosive materials, such as fertilizer.
NOTE: When storing any type of power equipment in an unventilated or metal storage shed, care should be taken to rust-proof the equipment. Using a light oil or silicone, coat the equipment, especially cables and all moving parts.
