Photosensi tive seizures
A very sma ll percentage of people may experience a seizure when exp osed to
certain v isual images, in cluding ashing
lights or p atterns that may appear in video game s. Even people wh o have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undi agnosed conditi on that can cause thes e “photosensitiv e epileptic seizures” while watching vi deo games.
These seiz ures may have a va riety of
symptoms, i ncluding lighthea dedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorienta tion, confusion ,
or momentar y loss of aware ness. Seizures may also c ause loss of con sciousness or
convulsion s that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nea rby objects.
Immediately s top playing and consult a doctor if you exper ience any of the se symptoms. Parents shou ld watch for or a sk their childre n about the above symptoms—chi ldren and teenage rs are more likely than adults to experienc e these seizure s. The risk of photosensit ive epileptic se izures may be reduced by taking the follow ing precautions:
• Sit farthe r from the TV screen.
• Use a smalle r TV screen.
• Play in a w ell-lit room.
• Do not play when you are dro wsy or fatigued .
If you or a ny of your relat ives have
a history of seizures or epilepsy,
consult a do ctor before playi ng.
Musculosk eletal DisorDers
Use of game controllers, keyb oards, mice,
or other e lectronic input d evices may be
linked to se rious injuries or disorders. When playin g video games, as with many
activities , you may experien ce occasional discomfort in your hands, arms, shoulders, neck, or ot her parts of y our body. However, if
you experien ce symptoms such as persistent
or recurrin g discomfort, pain, throbbing, aching, ti ngling, numbnes s, burning sensa tion, or stiffn ess, DO NOT IGNO RE THESE WARNING SIGNS. PROM PTLY SEE A QUALIFIED H EALTH PROFESSIO NAL, even if symp toms occur
when you ar e not playing a video game. Symptoms su ch as these can be associated with painf ul and sometime s permanently
disabling injuries or dis orders of the ne rves, muscles, te ndons, blood ves sels, and othe r
parts of the body. These musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) include c arpal tunnel
syndrome, te ndonitis, tenosy novitis, vibration sy ndromes, and ot her conditions.
While resea rchers are not y et able to
answer many questions abou t MSDs, there
is general a greement that ma ny factors
may be linke d to their occur rence, including medical and physical condit ions, stress an d how one cop es with it, ove rall health, and
how a pers on positions and uses their bod y during work and other activ ities (includin g playing a v ideo game). Som e studies suggest th at the amount of time a person performs an activity may also be a factor.
Some guide lines that may h elp you work and play more c omfortably and p ossibly reduce
your risk o f experiencing an MSD can be foun d in the Hea lthy Gaming Guide at www.xbox. com. These guidelines addr ess topics such as:
• Positioning yourself to use comfortable, not awkward , postures.
• Keeping your hands, ngers, and other
body part s relaxed.
• Taking breaks.
• Developing a healthy lifesty le.
If you have questions about how your
own lifest yle, activities , or medical or physical co ndition may be re lated to MSDs, see a quali ed health profe ssional.
