MINI PLANER PAL® KNIFE SETTING JIG
The Mini Planer Pal® knife setting jig was specially designed for use on the 1 7/8" diameter cutterheads
®
that come on most portable 10" and 12" planers. With proper care, the Mini Planer Pal
vide you with years of reliable knife setting service. Do not try to use these jigs on larger diameter
cutterheads since the preset knife height and curvature requirements will not be met. Planer Pal
offers larger, adjustable knife setting jigs for use on larger diameter cutterheads.
CAUTION: The zinc coated neo-dymium magnets used in the Mini Planer Pals® are extremely
strong, but they are very brittle. To avoid chipping the magnets, rock them gently into place on the
cutterhead. When not positioned on the cutterhead, return the jigs to their protective box. Small chips
may occur over time without adversely affecting the accuracy of the jig.
CAUTION: Keep Mini Planer Pals® away from all sources of iron or steel filings. Filings will be
readily drawn to the magnets and will act as small shims between the jigs and the cutterhead. This
will affect the accuracy of the tool. Filings can be removed by wiping or dabbing with a piece of
tape.

CAUTION: Do not let Mini Planer Pals® come into contact with any solvents. Solvents will attack the
polycarbonate body of the jig and destroy the built in accuracy. If this occurs, they will be use

Instructions for Use
1. Always disconnect planer from power source prior to exposing the cutterhead.
2. Remove planer dust cover.
3. If the cutterhead has elevating screws below the knives, adjust them down and away from the
bottom of the knives, so they will not interfere with the setting of the Mini Planer Pals

/16" above its final set height. Tighten the locking screws equally to the point
that the knife will not slip deeper into the cutterhead under its own weight, but can be pushed
deeper with one or two pounds of downward force. Test the tightness by pressing down on the
knives with a block of wood. Serious cuts could result if you use your fingers.

5. Place one Mini Planer Pal
at the far end of the cutterhead. Place the second Mini Planer Pal®
in the same position at the opposite end. Using hand pressure from above, push down one jig
so that the four end magnets contact the cutterhead, and the middle magnet contacts the knife.
Do not use excessive pressure to push down the knife. If the knife will not move downward into
position, loosen the locking screws slightly and try again. Repeat procedure for the second jig.
6. Hold the cutterhead with one hand and slide each jig until the indexing pin contacts the back
edge of the gib slot. See Figure.
Figure shows proper alignment (left side) of the Planer Pal™.
7. Use a flashlight to look down the length of the cutterhead to ensure that the knife is in contact
with the middle magnet of both jigs. If so, the knife is ready to be tightened.
8. Tighten the bolts symmetrically in steps. Starting with the middle bolt, turn each bolt once with
a wrench and move outward toward the ends. Repeat the sequence until the bolts are tight. The

are tightened securely. Remove the Mini Planer Pals

NOTE: When returning the Mini Planer Pals® to their box, be sure to put the jig used on the right side
of the cutterhead into the right side of the box and vice versa for the left. Then, when you set the next
knife, use the jig on the right side of the box for the right side of the cutterhead and vice versa for the
left. Keeping the jigs left and right organized will ensure consistent alignment from knife to knife.
NOTE: There is a numbered sticker on the outside of the box. Do not remove it! If, for some rea-
