Introduction
Congratulations on your choice of WizCom's state­of-the-art Reading Pen!
Now you can scan a wide variety of printed English texts and have the words you scanned read quickly aloud to you or look up their dictionary definitions from the Concise Oxford English
Dictionary (10
th
edition). The Reading Pen also
includes Guides and Glossaries from the Oxford dictionary.
For easy reading, use the Pen to scan entire lines of text, hear the lines read aloud, view selected words in a large-type image, spell out the words aloud, view the dictionary definitions of the words and read out the definitions aloud. The Reading Pen also contains cross-reference capabilities that enable you to select a word from within the definition and look that word up in the dictionary.
The Pen reads out through its built-in speaker or through the earphones included in the package. You can adjust the volume, pitch and speed of the reading voice to suit your specific needs. (IMPORTANT: please lower the volume control
before using the earphones to prevent ear irritation).
The Reading Pen offers you a wealth of opportunities for making reading a more enjoyable and satisfying experience.

Package Contents
Before using your Pen, take time to check the package contents to make sure that you have received all the following items. If anything is missing, please contact your Reading Pen dealer.

Setting up Your Pen
Please refer to the Getting Started insert in the
Reading Pen package and perform the provided steps.
The Pen Buttons
The keypad contains seven buttons for operating your Pen:
o The
. button is used to turn the Pen on
and off.
o The
button is the Enter button used in
a way similar to the Enter key on a computer keyboard.

o The button is the Escape button used
in a way similar to the Esc key on a computer keyboard.
o The arrow buttons

which are used in a way similar to the arrow keys on a computer keyboard.
Pressing the Pen Buttons
Press the Pen buttons as explained in the various procedures of this manual. The procedures in this manual are accompanied with graphic icons of the buttons you need to press (for example, “Press
”) and instructions on how to press them.
There are a few ways in which to press the buttons.
Note: not all types of presses are functional in all procedures. In the procedures of this manual you will be instructed as to the functions each press will perform.
Here are the types of presses, which are used:
Regular Press A single short press of the button. In this manual, when you are instructed to “Press” a button – it means you should perform this Regular Press.

Double-Click To double-click a button, press the button twice in rapid succession. For instructions on how to configure the double-click interval, see p34.
Long-Press To long-press a button, press the button and hold it down briefly. For instructions on how to adjust the duration of the long press, see p33.
Navigating using the Pen Buttons
To enter a sub menu or select a menu option or list entry:
1. Scroll through the menu or list, using and
, until the item you want is
highlighted.
2. Press
.
To select or deselect a toggle option from the Options menu:
1. Use the arrow keys to scroll to the option. The option is highlighted.
2. Press
.
3. If it is a check option (for example Auto Speak), the check sign 9 at the left side of the option means the option is activated, whereas no check mark means the option is not activated.
To navigate between menus: To return to the previous menu level from a sub-
menu, option or list, press
.

Closing messages or dialogs
Some messages (e.g., error messages) or dialogs (e.g., the Input Screen) display “buttons” on the screen. They appear as a command (e.g., GO, CANCEL, OK) with a circle around it (e.g.,
).
Press
to activate a highlighted button (i.e., the
button displayed in inverse text, e.g.,
). If
the button is not highlighted, use
, , and
to scroll to the desired button, thus highlighting
it, and then press
.
Scanning Limitations
The Pen allows you to scan printed text 6-22 points in size (up to 8mm) in a wide variety of fonts and in all colors on contrasting backgrounds except:

Learning to Scan
Please refer to the Easy Steps to Successful Scanning insert in the Reading Pen package and
perform the provided procedures. These will take you step by step through the process of scanning text into the Pen.
Note: the instructions are according to a Pen set with the original default settings.

Pen Basics
Input Screen
When you turn the Pen on, the Input Screen appears. You can start scanning in the word or words you want to read.
Input Screen
If you scanned one word only, the word you scanned appears in large type. If you scanned more than one word (e.g., a line):
If the Line Display First option (in the
Options menu) is on (i.e., checked) then
the words you scanned will appear in the top area of the Word Selection Screen.
Note: the default setting for this option is ON.
If the Line Display First option (in the
Options menu) is off (i.e., not checked)
then the first word scanned will appear in the Large-Type Screen. Pressing
will
bring you to the Word Selection Screen, while all the words you scanned will appear in the top area.

Word Selection Screen
The Word Selection Screen appears after scanning more than one word (and if the Line Display First option is on, see p29), or when you
press from the Large-Type Screen - after having scanned more than one word.
This screen enables you to select the word you want to hear or define and to hear the entire line read aloud.
Word Selection Screen
The upper section of the Word Selection Screen displays the scanned text in its entirety. Scroll
through the text using
or . A right scroll
arrow at the end of the text (
) indicates that you can scroll right to view its continuation. Similarly, when you scroll right, a left scroll arrow indicates that you can scroll left to view the previous section of the text.
When a word is highlighted you can:
Display the Word in Large Type
Press
to display the highlighted word in
large type. Once the Large-Type Screen

appears, you can perform any of the Large- Type Screen functions for the selected word (see p15).
Display the Definition
Press
to display the definition of the
highlighted word in the lower half of the Word Selection Screen. Scroll through the definition
using
and
. The arrows in the lower
right of the screen indicate in which direction you can scroll to view more of the definition.

Continue Scanning
You can scan again while in the Word Selection Screen. The current text is overwritten.
Return to Input Screen
Press
to return to the Input Screen.
Read out the scanned line
The Voice icon
appears to the left of the
line of scanned text. When this icon is selected, the entire line of text in the upper screen is read out aloud.

1. Press
to scroll to the Voice icon to hear the entire line read aloud. If the Highlight Spoken Words option (see
p28) is on, each word is highlighted as it is spoken.
2. Press
to hear the line read aloud
again.
3. Press
to abort the line reading.
Pronounce each word
When the Auto Speak option is activated (see p27), the Pen pronounces each word in the upper section of the screen as you scroll to it and highlight it.
Large-Type Screen
The Large-Type Screen displays a single word in large type. It appears after you scan in one word, when you scan in more than one word – and the Line Display First option is off (see p29), or when in the Word Selection Screen you highlighted a
word and pressed
.
Large-Type Screen
When the Large-Type Screen is displayed, you can perform the following functions:

Read the Word Aloud
Press
to read the word aloud.
Note: when the
Auto Speak
option is on (see
p27), the Pen automatically reads the word aloud after displaying it in the
Large-Type
Screen
.
Spell the Word Aloud
Press
to hear the word spelled out aloud.
Each letter is highlighted as it is spoken.
Display the Definition
Press
to display the definition of the word.
The Dictionary Screen appears (see p17).
Select a Different Word from the Line of
Text
If you have scanned more than one word, press
to display the Word Selection
Screen (see p13). This screen displays all the text you scanned so that you can select a different word to view in large type and hear it read aloud.
Return to Input Screen
If you have scanned in only one word, press
to display the Input Screen. If you have
scanned in more than one word, press again.
Note: you may also scan new text when in
the
Dictionary Screen
.

Dictionary Screen
The Dictionary Screen displays the definitions of the word you scanned. If the scanned word is not a dictionary entry, but a derivative , inflection or variant form of one, then the corresponding dictionary entry appears.

Note: you may also scan new text when in the
Dictionary Screen
. There is no need to return to
the
Input Screen

Displaying the Dictionary Screen
To display the Dictionary Screen and view definitions, press
from the Large-Type
Screen. If you have scanned a line of text and are in the Word Selection Screen, the method of displaying the definition of the selected word is explained in the section Word Selection Screen on page 13.
Viewing definitions in the Dictionary Screen
The Dictionary Screen allows you to scroll up and down so that you can view an entire definition quickly. You can determine whether the screen scrolls one, two or three lines at a time by

changing the number at the left side of the Line(s)
per scroll option in the Options menu (see p30). The Highlight Mode
Press
in the Dictionary Screen to activate the
highlight mode. The highlight mode will highlight the first word that can be spoken – from the current display.
The highlight mode enables you to:
Hear the definition (see Speak by Section)  Read aloud single words in the definition
see Pronounce a word in a definition
Look up the meaning of a word in the
definition (see Cross-Reference).
Speak by Section To hear a section of a word's definitions read aloud:
1. The Speak by Section option (see p27) must be on.
2. In the Dictionary Screen, scroll to the section you want to read out and press
to activate the highlight mode.
3. Long-Press
to hear the section read
aloud.
4. Press
to abort the reading.
5. If the Highlight Spoken Words option is on (see p28), the words are highlighted as they are spoken and the screen progresses to display the highlighted word. If Highlight Spoken Words is off, the words are not highlighted and the screen does not progress as the section is read out.

Pronounce a word in a definition To read aloud single words in a definition:
1. In the Dictionary Screen, scroll till the word you want to pronounce is on the
screen, and press
to activate the
highlight mode.
2. Highlight the specific word you want to pronounce by using
, , or .
3. Long-Press
to hear the highlighted
word read aloud.
4. To deactivate highlight mode, press
.
Cross-Reference
To look up the meaning of any word in the definition:
1. In the Dictionary Screen, scroll till the word you want to define is on the screen,
and press
to activate the highlight
mode.
2. Highlight the specific word you want to define by using
, , or .
3. Press
. The Large-Type Screen
displays the word.
4. Press
to hear the word read aloud, or
press
to view the definition of the word
in the Dictionary Screen.
5. To return to the original word, press
.
The History appears displaying the words you viewed most recently (see p24).
6. Scroll up through the list until the original word is highlighted.

Exiting the Dictionary Screen
Pressing
from the Dictionary Screen will:
Display the Input Screen, if you scanned a single word.
Display the Word Selection Screen, if you scanned a line of text.
Dictionary Entries
The dictionary entries displayed in the Dictionary Screen and in the Word Selection Screen
contain various elements, if applicable. Here are the main ones:
Entry Element Example Headword
The headword of the dictionary entry
Homonym Number
Denotes two or more identical dictionary entries with separate meanings. The other headword will appear in the Word List

Word List sign Signifies that there is a backlist containing homonyms or additional suggested headwords.

Part of Speech
The dictionary entry is divided into sections for each part of speech (verb, noun, adjective, etc.)
Definitions
Within each part of speech are various meanings, the first one being the core sense.

Sub Sense
These are sub definitions
Labels
Usage in a specific field, such as mathematics or law
When the Reduced Display mode is deactivated, additional elements are displayed, e.g., Phrases, Derivatives. For instructions on turning the reduced display on and off, see p28.
Homonym Number
When the scanned word corresponds to two or more identical dictionary entries with separate meanings, each meaning is a separate entry with its own number.
Word List Sign
The Word List sign appears to the right of the headword when the meaning of the highlighted word is somehow ambiguous. It indicates that you can access a list of alternative dictionary entries from the Dictionary Screen when: The scanned word corresponds to more
than one dictionary entry. Example: If you scan the word ‘running’ you can choose between 'running' (noun and adj.) and 'run' (verb and noun).

The scanned image is incomplete or
unclear. You are given a list of possible spellings from which to choose.
The scanned word corresponds to two or
more identical dictionary entries with separate meanings (i.e., homonyms)—for example, ‘bear

’ (verb) and ‘bear2’ (noun).
Word list for the word ‘bear'
To use the word list:
1. From the Dictionary Screen, press
.
The word list for the selected word appears.
2. Scroll to the word you want and press
.
The definitions for the selected word appear.
3. To return to the word list, press
again.
4. To exit the list without making a selection press
.
Homographs
A homograph is a word that has more than one pronunciation with a corresponding separate meaning—for example, ‘close’ (verb) and ‘close’ (adj.). If you scan a homograph when the Auto Speak option is activated, the Pen will read out both pronunciations, separated by the word “or”.

Main Menu
The Main Menu contains five menu options: Scanned Words, Glossaries & Guides, Options, Preferences, and Information. To display the
Main Menu, press
from the Input Screen. To
return to the Input Screen from the Main Menu, press
again.
Note: the Pen also contains a higher level Main Menu that is not used unless your Pen has been upgraded (see p48), and it is therefore not accessible through any menu option. If by mistake you pressed a very long press on
– this menu
will be revealed. To return to the
Input Screen
,
simply select the
Reading Pen
option or turn the
Pen off and on again.
Scanned Words
The Scanned Words menu contains a series of dictionary tools:
History
This option displays a chronological list of the most recently displayed words, with the last word you defined at the top of the list. To select one of these words and view its definition:
1. Select Scanned Words and then select History.

2. Scroll through the list to the word you want. You can scroll up to the end of the list. Long-press to scroll through the list more quickly.
3. Press
. The word appears in the
Large-Type Screen.
4. From the Large-Type Screen, press to view the definitions for the word.
5. Press
to return to the History list.
6. Press
again to return to the Scanned
Words menu.
7. Press
again to return to the Main
Menu.
The History list can store up to 80 words. Once the list is full, the oldest word is deleted from the list to make room for the most recent one.
Adjacent Entries
This option displays a list of all headwords in the current dictionary, placing you on the last word you defined or the last History word you selected. If you haven’t defined a word or selected a History word during the current session, it places you on the first word in the dictionary. You can then scroll through the list to find a different word in order to view its definition.
1. Select Scanned Words and then select Adjacent Entries.
2. Scroll up or down to the word you want. Long-press to scroll through the list more quickly.

3. Press . The word appears in the Large-Type Screen.
4. From the Large-Type Screen, press to view the definitions for the word.
5. Press
to return to the Adjacent
Entries list.
6. Press
to return to the Scanned
Words menu.
Reset History
Select this option to erase all entries from the History list.
Glossaries & Guides
This menu contains options that display the Glossaries and Guides provided with the Oxford dictionary:
Pronunciation Guide
This option displays and explains the phonetic presentation used in the current dictionary.
Abbreviations Guide
This option displays a list of abbreviations used in the current dictionary. It also indicates what each abbreviation in the list stands for.
SMS Glossary
This option displays a glossary of SMS (Short Message Service) abbreviations used for electronic text messaging.

British, with metric equiv.
This option displays a list of British and American measures or weights and their metric equivalents.
Metric, with British equiv.
This option displays a list of metric measures or weights and their British equivalents.
Celsius vs. Fahrenheit
This option displays a list of Celsius temperatures and their Fahrenheit equivalents.
Options
Use the Options menu to adjust dictionary features on your Pen. You can change more than one option at a time. Once you have changed the
preferences, press
to return to the Main
Menu. The options are:
Auto Speak
When Auto Speak is selected, the Pen automatically pronounces the word you select or highlight. To toggle Auto Speak on or off, press
, or . The check sign 9 at the left side of
the option means the option is activated.
Speak by Section
When Speak by Section is selected, the Pen reads the current section of a word's definition
when you long-press
, while in highlight mode
of the Dictionary Screen. To toggle Speak by

Highlight Spoken Words
When Highlight Spoken Words option is on, the words are highlighted as they are spoken and the screen progresses to display the highlighted word. This is possible both in the Word Selection Screen when reading out the scanned line (see p14) and in the Dictionary Screen when speaking out a section (see p18).
Reduced Display
This preference determines whether display elements in the current dictionary, such as phrasal verbs and idioms, appear with the definitions in the Dictionary Screen. When Reduced Display is selected, the following display elements are hidden:
1. Pronunciations (i.e., Phonetics)
2. Alternative spelling
3. Inflected forms
4. Phrases/Phrasal verbs
5. Sub-definition
6. Usage examples
7. Usage notes
8. Derivatives
9. Technical Notes
To toggle the Reduced Display mode on or off, press
, or . The check sign 9 at the left
side of the option means the option is activated.

Alternatively, in the Dictionary Screen, press or
to toggle the display of the current definition
between reduced and full. In the Dictionary Screen, a solid black arrow means the definition is currently in full display, whereas the hollow black arrow means the definition is currently in reduced display.
Inverse
Select this preference if you are scanning inverse text (light-coloured text on a dark background). To
toggle Inverse on or off, press
, or . The
check sign 9 at the left side of the option means the option is activated.
When the Inverse option is selected, the
icon appears in the top right corner of the Input Screen and the red light in the tip of the Pen blinks rapidly.
Line Display First
If this option is on (i.e., checked) when scanning more than one word, the words you scan are displayed in the top line of the Word Selection Screen.
Note: the default setting for this option is ON.

Line(s) Per Scroll
This preference determines how many lines are scrolled at a time in the Definition and Dictionary Screen. To change the number of lines per scroll,
press
, or . The Pen can scroll one, two
or three lines at a time.
Enable Edit Mode
When this option is on, it is possible to toggle the Pen between Insert Mode and Edit Mode (see p38). When the option is off, Edit mode is not available and the Pen is in Scan Only Mode (see p38).
Lock Dictionary Access
This option allows locking or unlocking the access to the dictionary definitions. This may be desirable when wanting to use the Pen during exams.
When the dictionary option is locked, the Pen will not allow entering dictionary definitions, but will allow scanning text, pronouncing the scanned words, and viewing the scanned words in large type.
To lock the dictionary access:
1. Select the Lock Dictionary Access option from the Options menu.
2. Set a 4-digit password: using
and
will scroll through numbers 0-9, and using
and will scroll between the digit
positions.
3. Press
.

4. Save aside the password which is displayed on the screen (for future use)
and press
.
5. Your dictionary is now unlocked. A little key icon appearing at the top right corner of the display (when not in a menu) denotes that the dictionary is locked.
To unlock the dictionary access:
1. Select the Unlock Dict. Access option from the Options menu.
2. Set your password using the arrow keys and press
.
3. Your dictionary is now unlocked.
If you forgot your password: If you locked the dictionary access and forgot the password with which to unlock it, please select the Forgot your Password? option and send the Recovery Code that appears on the screen to our support team (see contact information on p2). They will give you your forgotten password.
Preferences
The Pen contains default settings for the Preferences. You can change these default settings by selecting Preferences from the Main Menu. Preferences contains the following options:

Voice Settings
The Voice Settings menu contains options for controlling the way words are pronounced by the Pen:
Volume
Use this option to adjust the volume level of the speaker.
1. Select Volume. The adjustment bar appears.
2. Adjust the volume level to the setting you want, using
or .
3. Press
.
Pitch
Use this option to adjust the pitch of the speaker.
1. Select Pitch.
2. Scroll to the pitch you want, using
or . The higher the number,
the higher the pitch.
3. Press
.
Reading Speed This option enables you to adjust the speed at which words are pronounced.
1. Select Reading Speed.
2. Scroll to the reading speed you want, using
or . The higher
the number, the faster the speed.

Right-/Left-Handed Use this option to switch between right- and left­handed modes. Switching between these modes rotates the text on the display 180º.
1. Select Right-/Left-Handed.
2. Scroll to the mode you prefer, using

Auto Shut-Off Time The Pen automatically shuts off after 60 seconds if you do not scan or press any key. Use this option to change the automatic shut-off time.
1. Select Auto Shut-Off Time.
2. Change the automatic shut-off time, using or .
3. Press
.
Menu Type
Use this option to define whether the menus appear as Text Only, Icons Only, or Text and Icons.
1. Select Menu Type.
2. Scroll to the menu type you prefer, using or .
3. Press
.
Long-Press Interval
With a long press (see p10) you can perform additional commands. For example, a long press
on
pronounces a highlighted word in the
definition displayed in the Dictionary Screen. Use

this option to adjust the amount of time you need to keep a button pressed for a long press.
Select Long-Press Interval; the adjustment bar appears.
Move the slider to the setting you want, using
or .
Test the setting by pressing and briefly holding down
. If the screen flashes, the setting is
fine. If the screen does not flash, either adjust the setting to a faster speed or press longer.
Double-Click Interval Use this option to adjust the amount of time between the two clicks of the double-click.
1. Select Double-Click Interval; the adjustment bar appears.
2. Move the slider to the setting you want, using
or .
3. Test the setting by double-clicking
. If
the display flashes, the setting is fine. If the display does not flash, either adjust the setting to a slower speed, or double-click faster.
Interface Language The interface language is the language in which the menus and messages appear. Use this option to change the Pen’s interface language, if you have added additional interface languages to your Pen (only if the Pen has been upgraded, see p48).
1. Select Interface Language.

Contrast
Use this option to adjust the brightness of the display.
1. Select Contrast; the adjustment bar appears.

higher the number, the darker the display. Press

Information
Information contains the following options:
Battery Status
Select this option to check how much power is left in the batteries. A diagram displays the power level.
Memory Status
This option appears in the Information menu (only if your Pen has been upgraded, see p48).
Compact Memory
This option appears in the Information menu (only if your Pen has been upgraded, see p48).
Serial Number
Select this option to view the serial number of the Pen.
About
The About option displays information about the Pen, the Oxford dictionary and the text-to-speech software.

Advanced Features
The Pen contains three advanced features that enable you to edit the text you have scanned and to enter text manually. These features are:
 The Opticard  The Editor  The Character Bar
Each of these features is described in detail in this section.
The Opticard
Some words and phrases can’t be scanned because the letters are too large, are handwritten, or are on a background that the Pen can't scan. An Opticard is located on the back of the Pen’s case. It enables you to enter these words or phrases manually by scanning in letters one at a time using the bar codes (each key is a bar code).
To use the Opticard:
1. Hold the Pen case horizontally, with the Opticard title on the right. Slowly scan the Opticard key in the bottom left corner of

the Opticard to activate the Opticard mode. When the Opticard mode is activated, the light at the tip of the Pen blinks more rapidly than before.
2. To enter a letter in lower case, scan (or gently touch with the Pen tip on) the bar code for the corresponding key. The letter appears in the display.
To enter an upper-case character (situated
left, above the bar code), scan Shift, then the letter.
Scan Shift twice to activate/deactivate
CAPS
LOCK. Activating CAPS LOCK
enables you to enter letters in upper case only.
To enter a controlled character (situated
right, above the bar code), scan Ctrl, then the letter. Controlled characters can be entered only for the active character set.
To enter a controlled character in upper
case, scan Ctrl, then Shift (or Shift, then Ctrl), then the letter.
3. To enter a space, place the cursor in front of the letter that will follow the space
(using
or ), then scan the spc key.
4. To delete the previous character, scan Shift, then the del key.
5. Continue scanning or touching the bar code keys as required, until you have created the desired word.
6. To translate the word you have entered, scroll to GO and press
. The first word
of the text appears in large type. You are back in normal scanning mode.

The Editor
The Pen contains two basic input modes: scan only and edit.
Scan Only Mode When the Pen is in scan only mode, the Input Screen is displayed with the input field highlighted.
You can scan in text, but cannot edit it.
To edit text, you must activate edit mode:
1. Make sure the Enable Edit Mode option from the Options menu is checked.
2. In the Input Screen, press
to enter
edit mode. The text is de-highlighted.
Edit Mode
When the Pen is in edit mode, the Input Screen appears, but the text you have scanned is displayed as regular text with a blinking cursor at the beginning of the field.
Editing Text Once you are in edit mode, you can edit the text, using the Edit Menu, the Character Bar or Opticard.
To access the Edit Menu for the editing commands, press
.
Note: the Pen must be in edit mode in order to access the Edit Menu.
To access the Character Bar, press
.
The Character Bar enables entering text manually, overwriting or inserting characters.

When editing, you can use the Pen’s double-click feature to jump to the edge of the scanned text in
the input field. Double-click
to jump to the
beginning of the text or
to jump to the end.
Adding to Scanned Text You can scan in additional text while in edit mode, retaining the original text while inserting the new text at the cursor location:
1. If the input cursor isn’t located at the point where you want to insert the new text, use
or to scroll to the desired input
location.
2. Scan in the new text in the same manner as the original text.
Note: the Pen allows you to scan in a maximum of 200 characters.
When you scan in text while in edit mode, the new text is highlighted.
Press
to erase the highlighted text (i.e.,
so that you can rescan it).
Press any other key to de-highlight the text and scroll in the direction of the arrow.
Select GO to go to the definition of the text.
Select CLEAR to delete all text in the input
field.
Scanning Hyphenated Words Use edit mode to scan in hyphenated words appearing at the end of one line and the beginning of the next, such as in the sample sentence:

Scan hyphenated words with­out the slightest hitch.
1. Press
to activate edit mode.
2. Scan the first line.
3. With the text you have just scanned still highlighted, scan the second line. The two parts of the hyphenated word are automatically connected (the with- you had previously scanned and the out you have just scanned appear now as one word, without).
4. Select GO. The first word of the text appears in large type.
Editing Commands
Press
while in edit mode to display the Edit
Menu. The menu contains the following commands:
Resume Editing Select this command to exit the Edit Menu and return to the entry in edit mode to resume editing or scanning.
To exit the Edit Menu press
again. The Pen
returns to scanning mode.
Activate Overwrite Mode Selecting this command toggles the Pen to overwrite mode, so that you can overwrite existing text, using the Character Bar or Opticard. The
Activate Overwrite Mode option changes to Activate Insert Mode, when selected.

When in insert mode, a blinking cursor appears between two characters. If you add a character or characters using the Character Bar or Opticard, they are inserted at the cursor location.
When in overwrite mode, the current character is highlighted. Adding characters using the Character Bar or Opticard overwrites the text starting at the highlighted character.
Clear Text Select Clear Text to delete the text from the Input Screen. The Pen returns to the Input Screen, in edit mode.
The Character Bar
The Character Bar enables you to enter new text manually, or to overwrite or insert characters within the scanned text. The Character Bar can be activated only if the Enable Edit Mode is on (see
p30). To activate it, press
in the Input Screen.
The Character Bar operates in either insert mode or overwrite mode, according to the setting in the
Edit Menu (see p40).

The Character Bar contains the alphabet (in lower case), as well as the following buttons:
Punctuation
If you scroll to the Punctuation button and press
, it becomes the active
sequence, and a series of punctuation marks is displayed.
Numbers
If you scroll to the Numbers button and press
, it becomes the active
sequence, and numbers 0-9 are displayed.
Alphabet
If you scroll to the Numbers or Punctuation button and press
, it
becomes the active sequence and is replaced by the Alphabet button (displayed in Latin characters or the relevant character set). To reselect the alphabet as the active sequence, scroll
to the Alphabet button and press
.
Multiple Characters
When the Multiple Characters button appears, you can enter more than one character at a time. This is the default mode.
Single Character
If you scroll to the Multiple Characters

button and press , it toggles to the Single Character button; you can enter
only one character at a time, using the Character Bar.
Delete
The Delete button enables you to delete characters (see p45 for instructions).
Note: if you are in insert mode and the input field contains the maximum 200 characters, the cursor jumps immediately to the Delete button, when you access the Character Bar. It won’t move from the Delete button until you delete a character from the field. If you delete all characters in the field, the Character Bar disappears automatically.
In addition, the end of the alphabet sequence contains the following symbol:
Insert Space
If you scroll to the Insert Space symbol and press
, it enters a space in the
text or overwrites a character with a space.
Using the Character Bar
To enter multiple characters:
1. Press
until you return to the Input
Screen.
2. Press
to activate edit mode.
3. Scroll to the location in the field where you want to insert or overwrite a character.

6. Repeat Step 4 for each additional character you need.
To enter one character at a time:

To enter a variation of a character (e.g. in upper case or with an accent added):

To delete a character or characters:
1. Scroll to the character you want to delete. If in insert mode, the cursor is positioned before the character. If in overwrite mode, the character is highlighted.

3. Make sure you are in multiple characters mode if you want to delete more than one character.
4. Scroll to the Delete button and press

5. If you are deleting more than one character, press

Additional Information
Care and Cleaning
Your Pen conforms to the highest standards of craftsmanship and manufacture. To ensure its continued excellent performance, please adhere to the following instructions for care and cleaning: Protect the Pen from direct sunlight, heat,
dampness and dust. Do not drop or knock the device; keep it in its protective plastic case to avoid scratches. ALWAYS replace the tip’s protective cover when not in use.
Clean the Pen only with a soft, dry cloth. Never
use a wet cloth or solvents such as benzene or diluting agents.
NEVER clean, wipe or tamper with the Pen’s
tip. It contains a sensitive electronic eye that could become damaged.
Should your Pen require servicing, contact the
retail outlet where you purchased your unit.
Batteries
The Pen uses two AAA batteries. To check the batteries, select Battery Status from the Information menu in the Main Menu.
If the batteries are low, the following picture of a battery with a slash through it appears on the Pen’s display:

When replacing batteries, use only high-quality, alkaline batteries.

Upgrading the Pen
It is possible to extend the Pen’s memory in order to add additional applications and dictionaries to your Pen.
Extending the Pen’s memory is done with Wizcom Technologies’ Memory Extension Kit (MEK) product.

: If your Pen already contains an extension card, please contact your Reading Pen dealer for purchase of the MEK product.

How to access the communications options
Extending the Pen’s memory is done using communications between the Pen and the PC. The MEK provides instructions and hardware accessories for this. These instructions refer to the PC-Controlled Communications option of the

Pen and the Communications Settings menu in the Pen Main Menu.
In your Reading Pen, these menus and options are
not
visible or accessible through the various menu
options.
To access the Main Menu of the Pen (which is one level above the Main Menu of the Reading Pen application) in order to access the required communications, options:
Press the button continuously, till the
Pen Main Menu is visible (the Reading Pen application will appear at the first line):
The PC-Controlled Communications
and the Preferences menu (containing the Communications Settings) – necessary for the upgrade process - are available here (scroll down).
To return to the Input Screen of the
Reading Pen application, simply select the Reading Pen option, or turn the Pen off and on again.
Note: after adding an additional dictionary to your Pen a new
Select Dictionary
menu option will
appear, allowing to set the current dictionary.

Troubleshooting
Problem:
The Pen doesn’t scan.
Solutions:
o Check to see whether the Pen is turned
on, that is in scanning mode and that the protective cover has been removed from the Pen tip.
o Check whether you are scanning regular
text in inverse text mode or inverse text in regular text mode.
o If you had previously used the Opticard,
make sure you have switched out of Opticard mode prior to returning to normal scanning.
Problem:
An error message, “Word not found” appears every time you scan.
Solution:
Verify that you are scanning English text.
Problem:
The text in the display appears upside down.
Solution:
Adjust the right- or left-handed mode.
Problem:
The words you want to scan are in a format too large or small to scan, or the text is printed unclearly.

Problem:
An error message, “Scanned too fast” appears on the display.
Solution:
Scan more slowly.
Problem:
An error message, “Excessive lighting” appears on the display.
Solution:
