Assembly Instructions

• Make sure that you have all parts in accordance to the parts list.

• Element Assembly: Locate all element traps, 16mm (5/8”) connecting tubes, and center (colored) element traps.

Mark the center of each colored element traps with a felt tip pen.

• Assemble traps and 16mm tubes with self-tapping screws. Use some oil and take care to not over tighten the
screws. Insert plastic caps into element tips of red (reflector) and blue (director) element without issuing some
force to the traps. Put the 2 plastic caps into the short 10mm tubes at the undrilled side. Put the tubes (with the
caps to the outside) into the tips of the yellow traps (driven element), keep 10cm (4 inches) outside. For
alignment of the driven element, the distance between center trap and end traps is kept variable. use 44.88 inch
(114cm) for start -up.

• Element to Boom Assembly: Locate the center of the boom and mark with a felt tip pen. Now go 890mm (35”) to
both sides and mark the position of the elements according to the drawing.

• Mount the plastic element plates to the elements using the 32mm U-bolts, mounting blocks, 8mm washer and
nut. Make sure the elements are not confused and centered with the element plates.

• Mount the element plates to the boom with 50mm U-bolts, mounting blocks, 8mm washer and nut.

• Please Note : The elements have to be on top of the boom and the drain holes in the traps must be on the

bottom side. The connector bolts of the driven element will look upward.

• Mast to Boom Assembly: Locate the aluminum mast plate near the yellow driven element (radiator) to the boom,
facing the side with the red element.

• Mount the mast plate to the boom with 50mm U-bolts, mounting blocks, 8mm washer and nut.

• Coax Feed Assembly: The coax is to be connected to the studs of the yellow driven element (radiator). Separate

shield and center conductor and connect to the solder lugs provided. Fix those to the bolts with lock washers and
5mm nuts. Do not over tighten the bolts, otherwise they will come up and give a bad contact inside.

• We recommend that you seal the end of the cable and the solder lugs with silicone, tape, coax seal, or
something else that is suitable.

• Depending on your specific environmental conditions it might be better to ground the shielded side of the coax.
In this case connect it with a short wire to the mounting plate of the yellow driven element (radiator) which keeps
the plate on the boom. A piece of copper braid from a coax can be used. Two extra solder lugs are provided, 1
ea. 5mm and 8mm.

• You got it! Wishing you lot of DX with your new ZX -Yagi!

Tuning

• Try to adjust the antenna at the final place of installation. Please note that other antennas or metal pieces can
affect both center frequency and SWR.

• There are two tuning points: the variable distance between the mid trap and the outer traps (affects all bands),
and the tips of the radiator which affects the 20m band only.

• First the inner distance is to be adjusted for best SWR on 10 and 15m. 2 inches differe nce result in about
200KHz freq shift on 10m. Perhaps a compromise is to be found, because 10 and 15m can’t be adjusted
separatly. Ignore the maybe poor 20m resonance at this stage.

• After tuning the 10m and 15m bands the 20m band is to be adjusted with the tips of the driven element. 2 inches
difference result in about 120 KHz freq shift.

• If in spite of a correct center frequency the SWR appears not to be good enough, we suggest to use a simple
antenna tuner.

Montage

• Traps und 16mm-Verbindungsrohre entsprechend der Zeichnung sortieren und beschriften. Andere Teile
anhand der Stückliste identifizieren. An den farbigen Element-Innenrohren die Mitte anzeichnen.

• Positionen der Elemente auf dem Boom anzeichen: Mitte markieren, nach jeder Seite 890mm lt. Zeichnung
abtragen.

• Elemente mit Blechschrauben zusammenbauen. Schrauben nicht überdrehen, Öl verwenden. 4 Plastikstopfen in
die Elementspitzen von Direktor (blau) und Reflektor (rot) einsetzen, dabei keine Gewalt auf die Traps ausüben.
Beim Strahler die 2 kleineren Kappen in die kurzen 10mm Rohre auf der ungebohrten Seite einsetzen. Die
Rohre danach mit den Kappen nach außen in die Enden der Außentraps einsetzen. Die Spitzen dabei 10cm
herausschauen lassen. Der Abstand des mittleren Traps zu den äußeren Traps ist beim Strahler für den
Abgleich variabel gehalten, als Startmaß 114cm verwenden (siehe Abgleich!).

• Elemente mittig an die Elementplatten montieren: U-Bügel 32mm, Haltebock, Federring und Mutter M8. Keine
Gewalt anwenden, damit die Rohre nicht beschädigt werden.

• Elemente mit den Elementplatten entsprechend der vorher angebrachten Markierungen an den Boom
montieren: U-Bügel 50mm, Haltebock, Federring und Mutter M8. Die Elemente sollen später auf dem Boom
liegen und die Entwässerungsbohrungen in den Traps müssen nach unten zeigen. Beim Strahler zeigen die
Anschlußbolzen nach oben. Sicherstellen, daß di e Reihenfolge der Elemente lt. Zeichnung eingehalten wird.

• Mastschelle montieren: zwischen Strahler und rotem Element direkt am Strahler anschrauben.

• Das Koaxkabel wird am Strahler an die beiden Stehbolzen angeschlossen, dazu am Kabelende Geflecht und

Innenleiter trennen und an die mitgelieferten Ringösen anlöten. Ringösen an die Stehbolzen am Speisepunkt
anschrauben. Nicht mit Gewalt anziehen, Stehbolzen nicht herausreißen.

• Je nach Umgebungseinflüssen kann sich das SWR positiv verändern, wenn man die ‘kalte’ Seite der Antenne
erdet. Dazu eine kurze Verbindung vom masseseitigen Stehbolzen zum U-Bügel der die Montageplatte des
Strahlers auf dem Boom hält herstellen. Die dazu benötigten Ringzungen liegen bei (1x8mm, 1x5mm).

• Anschlußstelle und Kabel mit unserem selbstverschweißendem Klebeband Art.Nr. 23065 oder mit
dauerplastischer Dichtungsmasse (z.B. TEROSTAT) abdichten.

Abgleich

• Abgleich des Strahlers möglichst am endgültigen Standort durchführen, ein SWR-Analyser tut dabei gute
Dienste. Bitte beachten, daß benachbarte Antennen oder Metallgegenstände die Anpassung verschlechtern
können.

• Es gibt 2 Abgleichpunkte an der Antenne: der (verstellbare) Abstand zwischen mittleren Traps und Außentraps
beeinflußt ALLE Bänder, die Länge der Elementspitzen nur das 20m -Band.

• Zunächst den Abstand zwischen mittlerem und äußerem Trap auf bestes SWR auf dem 10m/15m einstellen.
5cm Längenänderung ergeben ca 200kHz Verschiebung auf dem 10m-Band. Gegebenenfalls muß ein
Kompromiss gefunden werden, da sich 10m und 15m nicht unabhängig voneinander einstellen lassen. Dabei die
möglicherweise noch schlec hte Anpassung im 20m-Band nicht beachten.

• Anschließend mit den kurzen Endspitzen am Strahler die 20m Resonanz einstellen, 5cm Längenänderung
ergeben ca 120kHz Verschiebung.

Ein kleiner Nachteil derartig verkürzter Antennen soll allerdings nicht verschwiegen werden: trotz korrektem
Abgleich kann im Einzelfall auf einzelnen Bändern das SWR etwas höher als bei unverkürzten Antennen sein. In
diesem Fall sollte die Verwendung eines einfachen Tuners in Betracht gezogen werden. Die Leistungsfähigkeit der
Antenne wird dadurch nur unmeßbar beeinflußt.
