RT5E™
(Addendum to RT5 Manual)
Revised May 18, 2007
With many of the same features as RT5, RT5E
has a new feature to offer. Load up five
750GB IDE drives and access a single logical
volume of 3.75TB over a simple and fast
eSATA connection!
What’s new with RT5E
• RT5E can create and access single volumes greater than 2TB in size, unlike the RT5.
• RT5E offers a single, fast eSATA data connection that allows you to access a single large volume
at maximal speed.
What’s the same with RT5E
• Uses the same processes to set up RAID configurations as the RT5.
• RT5E uses the same reloadable, lockable trays as RT5.
• A password-protected, button-driven menu is located on the front of both RT5 & RT5E.
• RT5E is plug and play under recent operating systems.
• To continue WiebeTech’s tradition of tough, durable products, RT5E is made out of heavy-duty
aluminum and steel construction, with a durable handle for field transport.
Installation
1. Check the accessories with your RT5E. Please contact WiebeTech if any parts are missing or
damaged. The box should contain the following items:

2. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the parts of the RT5E.
The remaining installation steps can be found in the RT5 Quick Start Guide on
page 3, or in the RT5 Full User’s Manual starting with section 2 on page 11.
Configuring a new RAID
The process for setting up a RAID on the RT5E is nearly the same as on the RT5. The few differences
are listed below. Note: If you purchased the RT5E with drives preinstalled and preconfigured, you can
skip this section.
To access over 2TB of storage with RT5E, a couple of settings will need to be changed.
1. When setting up a RAID, you will be prompted to set up a RAID over 2TB or below 2TB. Select the
option that will allow over 2TB.
2. Under ‘Modify Volume Set Attribute,’ change the IDE Host Channel to Channel 1.
3. Under ‘Modify Volume Set Attribute,’ change Tagged Queuing to Disabled.

Warnings and Notices
• The RT5E supports drives of various specifications and different capacities. However,
we recommend using drives of the same brand and type for optimal performance. If
drives of varying capacities are used, the RT5E will consider all drives to have the same
capacity as the smallest drive.
• If replacing a failed drive in a redundant RAID, the new drive must have equal or greater
capacity than the drive being replaced. Hard drives from different manufacturers may
have slightly different capacities, even if the stated capacity is the same.
• Use only hard drives that are in perfect condition. Avoid using drives that have ever
developed bad sectors during previous usage. This could lead to possible device failure
or loss of data.
• To connect RT5E to your computer, your system must support eSATA connections. Few
computers come equipped with external SATA connectivity, so in many cases you will
need to add an eSATA host adapter to your system before connecting this way.
• You should carefully consider and select your RAID type before using this device. Once
you have put data onto the hard drives, changing the RAID type will corrupt or delete that
data. You must reformat the volume after changing the RAID.
• RAID level 0 will allow you to use the full capacity of all drives, and offers the best data
transfer speeds. However, RAID 0 offers no protection for the data. If one drive fails in a
RAID 0, the data on all drives is irretrievably lost.
