CONNECTINGYOUR LOUDSPEAKERS
Select two suitable lengths of twin core speaker cable, of roughly the same length and prepare them as described. Avoid having one cable extremely short and one extremely long as this may unbalance the bass, especially onheavy passages.
Connect the Left loudspeaker to the Left Speaker output of theamplifier. Make sure that the Red, Positive (+) terminal of the loudspeaker connects to the Red, Positive, (+) terminal of the amplifier.Connect the Black, Negative (-) terminal of the loudspeaker to the Black, Negative (-) terminal of the amplifier. Now connect the Right loudspeaker to the Right Speaker output of the amplifierfollowing thesame procedure.
If yourloudspeaker cable ispolarised with astripe or raisededge on oneconductor, it helpsto use the wire with the marking to connect to the Red, Positive terminals in all cases. This will assist you to connectthe loudspeakersproperly andin phase.
POSITIONINGYOUR LOUDSPEAKERS
The ZaldekSeries isdesigned tobe either Floorstanding orshelf orstand mounted. For theZaldek 300 and 600 stand mounting is advisable. The Zaldek 1000 may be stand or floor mounted., while the Zaldek 2000is adedicated floormounting design. If thespeakers arewall mountedthey shouldbe on asturdy bracketwhich supportsthe undersideof theloudspeaker andis firmlyattachedto thewall.
Placing loudspeakers closer to the floorwill increase the bass output but if thefloor is suspended the bass may boom and becomeoverpowering. If the loudspeakers are placed too close to thewalls the
bass will increase but may be boomy and indistinct. We suggest that they are positioned at least 300mm from the rear walls and 700mm from the side walls, facing slightly inwards. If the loudspeakersare placedfurtheraway fromthe walls, the inwardanglemay beincreased byup to40%, although thismay restrictthe widthof theoptimum listeningposition. The orientationof themidrange andtreble hornsissuch thattherewill bea greatdeal ofheightinformation, butthis toein angleshould becarefully adjustedfor optimumresults.(Refer tothe diagrambelow).
The loudspeakersshould beoperated ata heightwhere thetreble hornis atear levelto aseated listener though the largevertical dispersion of the midrangeand treble horn meansthat this is notcritical. As personal tasteplays alarge role pleaseexperiment withdifferent configurationsand playa wide range ofprogrammes beforefinalising theposition of yourspeakers.
NOTE: When finalisingyour loudspeakers’positionbe awarethatthey shouldnot bein positionswhere theycould beknocked overor causedanger tochildren orpets.

For Home Theatre applications, matching surround and centre channel loudspeakers and a powered sub bass unitmay be added .Thank you for yourconfidence in purchasingWharfedale. We hope that yourloudspeakers willgive youa rewardinglistening experiencefor manyyears .
Pleaseread allthe instructionscarefully andin fullbefore installing your Wharfedale loudspeakers. Before makingconnections to anypart of yoursound system makesure the amplifierand allconnected
sourcesare switchedoff. When youswitch on yoursystem or changesources, set thevolume control tominimum and turnup the
level gradually. DO NOT use your amplifier at full volume. The position of the Volume Controlis NOT a reliable
guide as tothe maximum volumelevel or capabilities ofyour sound system. Playing thesystem with extreme high settingsof volume and tone controlswill result in distortedsound and may damage the amplifierand loudspeakers.
DONOT connectloudspeaker terminalsto themains supply. Ensurethat allloudspeakers inthe systemare correctlywired andare inphase.
Carefully remove each loudspeaker from its packing carton.Be especially careful when removing the polythene bag. DO NOT attempt to lift the loudspeaker by the polythenebag. Retain the packing for futureuse. Ifyou decideto disposeof thepacking, pleasedo sosafely.
Carefully invert each loudspeaker. Protect the top surface fromscratches or damagewhen the loudspeakeris inverted. In thepacking carton youwill find the spike assemblies. Screw a spike into each of the four pre-drilled locations on the base of the loudspeaker. Return the loudspeakerto its normal positiontaking care not to causedamage with the spikes. Adjust the height of the spikes so that the speakers are stable. The top surfaces of the loudspeakershould belevel andthe sameheight abovethe floor.
Whenmoving speakers, becareful notto letthe spikespierce objects,or cableswhich maybe concealed underthe carpet.Never dragthe loudspeakers. If youcannot liftthem easily, getsomeone toassist you.
A set of self adhesive pads is provided.Peel off the backing material
andfix apad ateach cornerof thebottom surfaceof theloudspeaker.
Four self adhesive spacers are provided. Peel off the backing
materialand fixa spacerat eachcorner ofthe rearsurface ofthe loudspeaker.
Cable designedfor audio applicationswill usually offerbetter performancethan general purpose'bell' or 'zip' wire. Choosea cable of suitable diameter- cable that is toothin will limit the dynamicsof the soundand mayimpair thebass response.Audiocable ispolarised, withtwo coresof differentcolours, or oftena colouredtracer inthe caseof twin cable.
Split the twin cores to a depth of about 40mm. Carefully strip the insulation from each end, leaving about8mm ofbare wire.If thecable isstranded, lightlytwist togatherany loosestrands.
The Zaldek Sub Bass uses twin screw terminals. The other loudspeakers in the Zaldek range use powerfulspring terminals.
Unscrew the terminal. Thread the bared endof eachcable throughthe holein thebottom of theterminal post. Retighten theterminal securely.
Ensure that there are no loose strands
whichmay touchadjacent terminals.
Spring Terminals:
Screw Terminals:
When a lever is pressed a hole appears in the terminal into which the wire can be pushed. When the lever is released thewire is held firm. Ensure that theterminal grips thebare wire at theend of thecable, notthe insulation.
Make sure that in all cases the Red speaker terminal is wired to the Red (+) amplifier output terminal and the Black speaker terminalis wired tothe Black (-)amplifier output terminal.

If your amplifier does have a line level subwoofer output, you will need to feed the subwoofer together with the Front loudspeakers. For thisyou willneed twoextra twincore cables.
The Speaker Level connectors are screw terminals Unscrew each terminal to expose the mounting hole at the base of the terminal .Insert the baredend ofthe cableinto the holeand retightenthe terminalsecurely. Ensurethere areno loosestrands.
If the Front loudspeakersare already connected, disconnect these cables at the amplifier. Using one ofthe additional twin core cables, connect theLeft SpeakerInput Terminalson thesub bass unit to the main Left speaker terminals on the amplifier. Connect the Red (+) speaker terminalon the amplifier to the Red (+) terminal on the subwoofer. Connect the Black (-) speaker terminal on the amplifier to the Black (-) terminal on the subwoofer. With the other additional cable, connect the Right SpeakerInput terminals onthe subbass unitto theFront Rightspeaker terminalson theamplifier.
Connect the Left loudspeaker to the Left Speaker Output terminals on the sub bass unit. Connect the Rightloudspeaker to the Right Speaker Output terminals on the sub bass unit. Followthe colourcoding asdescribed above.
Using an extra cable per channel, connect the subwoofer to the Front speakers which should in turn be connected to the amplifier.Follow thecolour codingas describedabove.
If your amplifier has a suitable line output controlled by the master volume control (i.e. a tape output), use the connectionshown. Youwill needa stereoRCA phonocable.
If you use a stereo pre and power amplifier, or an amplifier where thepre andmain amplifiercanbe separated, connect the subwoofer as shown. You will need two stereo screened RCA phonocables.
To dothis, first remove the PreOut-Main In links as necessary. Next, connect one RCA cable from the Pre Out Sockets on the amplifier to the Line Level Inputs on the subwoofer. Connect a second cablefrom theLine LevelOutputs ofthe subwooferto the MainIn socketsof theamplifier. Donot mixup Rightand Left!
The figures illustrate some suggestions for wiring two subwoofers. Ifyou need furtherinformation consultyour dealer foradvice.
Although theunit maybe placed almostanywhere inthe room, even behind the sofa or the TV set, we recommend that it be placed in front of the listener and as central to the listening position as possible. As the subwoofer is a powered unit there shouldbe amains outletwithin easyreach.
We suggest you position the subwoofer about 20cm from the wall. Placing the unit close to the wall will enhance the bass; placing it across the corner of the room will increase the bass further, possibly at the expense of clarity. Experiment with a varietyof locationsand sourcesbefore makinga finaldecision.
Do notplace thesubwoofer close tosurfaces orobjects thatmay rattle. The floor under the subwoofer should be sound with no loosefloorboards, etc.
Check thatall system connectionsare correct. Set theSubwoofer Level Control tominimum and thePower switch toOFF. Connect the powerlead ofthe subwooferto the mains.
Switch onthe powerto thesubwoofer andcheck that theStatus Indicator onthe front panelglows. Connectthe powerto therest ofthe system. The systemis nowoperational.
The Level control is located on the front panel. Set this control initially at midway (12 o’clock). Whenthe other controlshave been set, this canbe re-adjustedif needed.Do notsettoo higha levelor thesound willbe bassheavy.
The Bass Crossover control on the front panel integrates the subwoofer with the main loudspeakers. Set this initially at 9 o’clock for large floor standing speakers and 2 o’clock for bookshelf units. The can be fined tuned by listening to the overallsound andadjusting thebass toa suitablelevel.
Use this control if there is insufficient bass output from the subwoofer. Listencarefully tosome music withextended bassand switch the Phase switch in and out. Select the position which producesthe mostbass, asjudgedfrom thelistening position.
Depress the AutoPower switchto select this facilityand release theswitch todefeat it.
In Autopower mode the subwooferwill switch itself to Standby when there is no audio signal. When the subwoofer detects a signal itwill switchon. If there isno signal present, after about 30 seconds it will go to Standby. The Status Indicator on the frontpanel glowsyellow inStandby andred whenoperational.

Four self adhesive feet aresupplied with the Centre loudspeaker. Apply one at each corner of thecabinet.
The Centre Channel unit should beplaced above or below the screen as shown. In turn, the television should be positioned centrally between the frontloudspeakers.
We recommend that the unit is mounted on top of thetelevision and placed sothat the front grille is level with or slightly in front of the screen. This will reduce soundreflections fromthe topof theTV cabinet.
The loudspeakershould be locatedon a stableflat surfaceto preventthe cabinetmoving athigh soundlevels.

PHASE
SUBWOOFERMAINS OPERATION
Many digital AV Processors require you to specify the size of speakers inall channels. These areusually ‘Large’or ‘Small’.
Set the Front Speakersto ‘Large’. Set the ‘Subwoofer’ option on the processor to 'Off' or 'No'. TheFront channelswill nowreceive allthe systembass.
If you set the speakers to ‘Small’ the low bass content of the front channels will be directed to the subwoofer, along with the bass from the Rear and CentreChannels. In otherwords all thesystem bass willgo into the subwoofer. If you choose ‘Large’ the Front channel bass will be reproduced from the Front speakers. Bookshelf speakers (Zaldek 300) should be set to ‘Small’, large floor standingunits (Zaldek 2000) maybe setto ‘Large’.
Referto yourAV processor handbookfor detailedguidance.
Once the loudspeaker settings have been finalised, put the AV amplifier into its “Test” mode (see instructions supplied with
yourprocessor). Adjust thelevel ofeach channelin turnuntil all channelsare reproducedat equalloudness.
NOTE: Onsome programmematerial thesurround channel may seemlower thanthe front.Do notreadjust thislevel.
You may, however, need to adjust the subwoofer output level. Avoid setting toohigh alevel or youwill swampthe sound with bass which be tiringto listen to and may limitthe subwoofer’s ability to respond to large bass transients. Set a sensible level going into the subwoofer from the AV processor. The volume control on the subwoofer should be between 12 o’clock and 3 o’clockwhen thesystem asa wholeis playingmoderately loud.
Many AVprocessors featuredelay settings. The purposeof delay is to enablesurround and dialogue informationto arrive at the listener’s ears at the same time as the Front channels, even whenthe listeningseat isin anon-ideal position.
If the listening position is equidistant from the Front and Rear speakers, the delay should be set to a low setting. If the listener is closer to the Rear speakers the delay settings should be increased; the further away the listener is fromthe frontspeakers, thehigher willbe thesetting needed.
If the Centre loudspeaker is level with (or slightly behind) the Frontspeakers, set the delayto minimum. If the Centre speaker is forward of the Front speakers increase thedelay.
In the cinema the Low Frequency Effects channel is an
bass channel with its owndedicated subwoofer and
a regular subwoofer channel. In domestic Home Theatre systems the LFE channel typically feeds into the subwoofer. Where no subwoofer is used, the LFE signal is combined with Front Channel information. When you set theLFE level at your AV processor, use care asthe LFEchannel maycontain powerful lowfrequencies whichcan overloada domesticloudspeaker. If you hear popping or thumping noises comingfrom the front loudspeakersor subwoofer, immediatelyturn theAVProcessor's volume level downand then back offthe LFE level. This should cure theproblem. Ifit does not, back offthe volumelevel atthe subwoofer(if youare usingone) untilthe problemdisappears.
Please read the relevant sections of your AV amplifier manual and familiarise yourself with the various issues. If you are unsure, consult yourdealer forhelp.
A correctly connected Home Theatre systemhas a precise front stage, a diffuse rear stage and good localisation of dialogue which should appear from the mouths of the actors. If the colours on the loudspeaker terminals do not correspond with those onthe amplifier, the soundwill appearpoorly focussedor ‘out ofphase’. For thisreason itis extremelyimportant that the speakers are connected strictly in accordance with the wiring diagramsin thismanua
We recommended that you switch off theZaldek sub bass unit when thesystem is notin use,to protectit fromswitching noises from domestic appliances, etc. Theauto switch off is adequate for short periods but if the system is not to be used for some time- switchit off. Switching the complete system from a central point will avoid you having to switch on the subwoofer when you want to play the system. Remember to turn the main volume control to minimumwhenever youswitch theequipment onor off.

The front channelloudspeakers are placedon either side ofthe television screen, 2 to 3 metres apart. The speakers should be angledslightly sothey areaimed towardsthe listeners.
As theseare the‘effects’ channelsthe reproduced soundshould beas roomfillingas possible. To aidthiswe recommendplacing the speakers in a high position, slightly behind the listener’s head. Angledtowards thelistener andpositioned high, therear speakers givea goodrear perspective combined witha diffused sound field. Two possible placements are indicated in the diagrams.
Note: If therear wall ismore than 1metre behind thelistening seat, positionthe units onthe side walls. If the sideor rear walls are inconveniently located, you could consider standmounting theloudspeakers.
Most of the dialoguecomes from the centre loudspeaker. This ensures that the speech appears to originate from the actors’ mouths, notdisplaced toeither side.
The operating height of the speakers is important. For best results the front and centre channel speakers should be operated at the same height if possible. For this reason the centre channel speaker should be operated on top of the television monitor. Placing the centre loudspeaker under the televisionscreen isdefinitely secondbest.
Ideally the front facesof the centre andsurround loudspeakers shouldbe inline thoughthis maynot bepracticable inall cases.
As theear isunable todetect thedirection from whichdeep bass originates, this allows freedom in positioning the subwoofer. Varyingthe distancefrom thewall willalter theamount ofbass, thelevel increasingasthe unitis movedcloser tothe wall. Some prefer toplace the subwooferagainst acorner of theroom. This arrangement givesmore bassat thepossible expenseof clarity. Remember to placethe subwoofer nocloser than 450mmfrom thetelevision screenor youmay causedistortion inthe picture.

CHOOSINGFRONT ANDREAR CHANNELLOUDSPEAKERS
Consider carefullyyour choice ofFront loudspeakers, especially if youare not going to use a separatepowered sub bass unit. Alhough the Zaldek 300 and 600 will perform well as front loudspeakers especially in a smaller system, we would advise you to considerone of the larger floor standingunits, especiallyif youown aDigital processor.
You may use any regular loudspeakers in theZaldek series for the Rear channels butwe strongly recommendthat you usethe specially designed Zaldek Surround loudspeaker. If you use conventional units, this is perhaps best accomplished with a pair of bookshelf models placed on highstands orwall mountedon suitable swivel brackets.
