Before you begin the ac tual inst all ati on of the WDXT- 140 or the
WDXT- 150 hardware and software, you need to prepare and install your
intelligent drives. Steps 1 and 2 below refer to these procedures.
Important
Each intelligent drive in your system requires a separate
interface cable. The WDXT-140 and the WDXT-150 DO NOT
support hard disk drives attached to daisy chain cables.
Installing Drive(s)
1.
Turn your computer power switch OFF and unplug the power
cord. Then remove the computer cover. See manufacturer's
manual for details.
2.
Look in your intelligent drive manual and follow the steps to
configure and to install your intelligent drive(s). These steps may
include:
• setting the drive number and terminator resistor
• attaching the cable(s) to each drive
• mounting the drive(s) into the computer case
• attaching your drive to a power source
Changing Adapter Jumper(s)
There are no j umpers on the WDXT-140. If you have a WDXT140 board, you can ski p this sect ion and go di rect ly to t he next secti on,
Connecting Cables.
The WDXT- 150 adapter board contains jum pers which control
the BIOS address, t he port address , and the i nter rupt r equest . Figure 1- 1
shows the locat ion of these jumpe rs. Change the BIOS and port addres s
jumpers or the interrupt request on the WDXT-150 adapter board, if
necessary.
See Appendix B for instructions on how to change jumper
settings.

Connecting Cables
After you have com plet ed ins tal ling your int elligent drive(s) and
changed any jumpers required on the WDXT-150 adapter boa rd, follow
either step 1 (i f you have the WDXT-140) or step 2 (if you have t he
WDXT-l50) to connect your cables into your adapter board.
1.
Connect cable(s) from drive unit(s) to WDXT-140 adapter board.
If you have a WDXT-140, see Figure 1-2.
If you have a WDXT-150, see Figure 1-3.
Drive 1 Cable Installation
Attach the interface cable 40 pin connector fr om the fi rst drive t o
J 1 on the adapt er board. Attach Pi n 1 of the cable connector to
Pin 1 on the adapter board. See Figure 1-2.
Pin 1 of the cable connector is marked and is on the color
coded edge of the cable. Pin 20 on the WDXT-140 board is
keyed (pin missing). Do NOT force the cables and connectors.

Drive 2 Cable Installation
Attach the interface cable 40 pin connector fr om the second dr ive
to J2 on the adapter board. Attach Pin 1 to Pin 1. See Figure 1-2.
2.Connect cable(s) from drive unit to WDXT-150 adapter board.
Note: The WDXT-150 supports only one intelligent hard disk
drive.
Drive 1 Cable Installation
Attach the interface cabl e 40 pin connect or fr om the dri ve to J2A
on the adapter board. Attach Pin 1 of the cable connector to Pin 1
on the adapter board. See Figure 1-3.
The WDXT-150 has a power connector, which can suppl y power
to the drive. This connector is located in the lower corner of the
board. See Figure 1-3. If you have no other way of connecting
power to your intelligent drive, then connect the drive power
cable to this connector.

Pin 1 of the cable connector is marked and is on the color
coded edge of the cable. Pin 20 on the WDXT-150 board is
keyed (pin missing). Do NOT force the cables and connectors.
Inserting Adapter into Computer
After you have connected the cable(s) from either the WDXT140 or WDXT-150 to your intelligent drive(s), follow the steps below to
plug the board into your computer. Use an empty slot which is as cl ose
to the intelligent drive(s) as possible, except as noted below.
Note: For IBM XT owners: DO NOT use the slot closest to the
power supply. Use an expansion slot at least one position
removed from the power supply.
1.Loosen the screw holding the plate cover for the selected
expansion slot. Remove the slot cover screw, but do not remove
the expansion slot coverplate.
Your adapter board should have a pl asti c cli p att ached. I f the c lip
is not attached to the board, locate the clip and gently push it onto
the upper right-hand corner of the adapter board. See Figure 1-4.

2.Hold the adapter board by the top corners and slide it into the
expansion slot. The board's edge connector (as shown in Figure
1-5) fits into the computer's motherboard expansion slot. Press
on the board as you insert it into the expansion slot. Check that
the board is seated properly by pressing down firmly on both ends
of the board.
3.After the board is seated firmly in the expansion slot socket,
secure the board using the plastic clip that is on the end of your
board. Place the screw over the clip and slot cover. Then screw
the clip and slot cover to the computer case.

Replacing Cover
1.
Replace the computer cover. Make sure that cables are out of the
way and not caught between the cover and boards. Check that the
cables do not obstruct the air flow path from the fan or vents.
2.
Plug the power cord back into your computer and turn the power
switch ON.
Your hardware installation is complete. However, you need to
format your hard disk and install an operating system and other software
before you can use your hard disk(s).
